Watchlist

The Watchlist – Ryan Nelsen

If you’re currently considering the Fantasy merits of QPR’s Ryan Nelsen, one thing is for certain – you can’t be accused of chasing points. With just Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 18 points garnered over the first nine Gameweeks, the former Blackburn man has hardly set the Fantasy world alight this term but the Kiwi is starting to suggest he could offer us a viable cut-price defensive option.

Having missed the first two matches of the 2012/13 campaign after his Olympic Games exertions with New Zealand, Nelsen couldn’t have asked for a more difficult debut as Mark Hughes’ side were seen off 3-1 at the Etihad in Gameweek 3. The following week, however, his first game in front of the Loftus Road faithful not only produced an unexpected clean sheet against Chelsea but also earned the centre-half maximum FPL bonus points, helping his owners to a nine point return.

While Anton Ferdinand seems to have fallen out of favour since that Gameweek 4 goalless draw, starting just a single game since, Nelsen has been the only mainstay in the ever-changing QPR defence, with Hughes clearly reliant on his physical presence and organisational skills at the heart of the back-four. Although the R’s have failed to register another clean sheet, Nelsen again picked up bonus in his second home match despite the home side falling 2-1 to West Ham.

Over the past couple of Gameweeks, QPR’s resilience at the back has propelled Nelsen onto our recently updated Watchlist rankings. With just a single goal conceded against Everton and Arsenal, there are hopes that Hughes’ side are finally starting to tighten up just in time for a trio of crucial fixtures for the Premier League basement-dwellers.

If Hughes is to engineer a climb out of the drop zone, the upcoming home games against Reading and Southampton, with a trip to Stoke sandwiched in between, will be vital to the R’s prospects. There’s no doubt his acquisition would be something of a punt but if you fancy picking up Nelsen purely for home games alone, his next five Loftus Road showdowns read (REA, SOT, AVL, FUL, WBA) all the way up to Gameweek 19. Priced at 4.0 in FPL and 3.9 in the Sky Sports game, there are few cut-price defensive options who offer such a consistency of starts with decent home fixtures to follow.

Anyone who is not captaining RVP (and has him) is crazy IMO. He is the stand out choice for this week and considering Bale over him is ridiculous if you ask me.

It's not rediculous, but RVP(c) over Bale(c) is certainly a very good move imho.

Arsenal are a helluva lot more solid than Wigan. Bale's in great form too.

I'm not saying Bale isn't a good captain choice. I think he will do well. But RVP is the much safer and better option because he will almost certainly deliver whereas Bale is very hit and miss (either gets a double digit score or a 2).

It's not crazy and it's not ridiculous though. Arsenal could keep United down to 0-2 goals easily.

I'm still unsure but think it's far from clear cut.

        Spurs have scored at home

        WBA -1
        Norwich -1
        QPR - 2
        Villa - 2
        Chelsea - 2

It's OK, but not particularly stand out.

          STK - 0
          LIV - 0
          MCI - 1
          WHU - 1
          NOR - 1

Neither is Bale though. Definitely not bad options but I just can't see past RVP if you have him. Personally I don't, I took him out last week for Aguero for the next 2-3 GWs but the reality is I should've tried to fit them both in.

Spurs have a habit of losing to teams they really shouldn't at home. Van Persie knows Arsenal inside out and will know the weaknesses of their CBs.

I'm sure both Bale and RVP will do well but I fancy RVP to provide more explosive returns.

    Vorm Begovic
    Ridgewell Baines Clyne Gorkss Kolarov
    Gervinho Hazard Fellaini Nolan Michu
    RVP Berbs Ba

Vorm has to go and I think Schwarzer is the best fit for rotation of those 2.

I'm probably going to have to spend 4 if not 8 points.
Presuming Berbs is fit and Ba is out for one week only, in order of priority my moves are

    1) Gervinho out
    2) Vorm out
    3) Kolarov out

Been toying with my options, here are some of them.

    A) Gervinho->Morrison
    B) Gervinho->Bale, Vorm->Tremmel (-4)
    C) Gervinho->Bale, Vorm->Schwarzer, Kolarov->Nelson/Turner(-8)
    D) Gervinho->Dempsey, Vorm->Schwarzer, Kolarov->Cuellar/Caulker(-8)

Anyone think Dempsey is a good alternative to Bale?

I don't think so, it's difficult to find any midfielder who can keep up with Bale, and Demspsey won't be deployed in as advanced a role as he was for Fulham. I'd go with B (although I perhaps wouldn't take an 8 point hit). I don't think Vorm should be ahead of Kolarov in priorities considering Begovic's upcoming fixtures.

Can you do B with the Reading keeper instead of Tremmel? Begovic can be played just about every game so a cheap second keeper with a DGW makes sense up to Jan wildcard.

Yes, Dempsey is a good alternative to Bale. Whether he will score more points is difficult to say without hindsight.

Having sold Torres with one free, I bottled on getting Bale. For some reason I don't trust him. So have continued my double Chelsea policy and got Hazard back to pair with Mata. I will get Bale in place of Cazorla if he doesn't perk up though. Hazard's display last night convinced me. And Bale has City and Arsenal away after this weekend.

If I were you I would do Vorm + Gerv > McCarthy and Mata, then you are set for DGW with at least one player! And Mata will continue to rise. Then your mid is fine so that's five players out on the pitch, plus two strikers, leave Ba benched. Next week sort defence! Shawcross to double up with Bego?

      A. It's not a brilliant stretch of fixtures for Morrision but certainly the next 2 look OK. Begovic is reasonable cover til you get Vorm sorted w/o a hit, so B doesnt make a lot of sense. C is interesting but an 8 point hit ? I just can't go there. I might do C but over 3 weeks, starting with either Vorm >> Schwarzer(EVE) or Nelsen(RDG) >> Kolorov this week.

Dempsey is nearly the same price as Bale and Bale just looks like a world-beater right now, so I would try to muster the extra cash.

A topical question, I fancy playing Nelsen this week but not sure who to drop for him?

I'm not overly keen on having four players in FUL v EVE game (Baines, Riise, Pienaar and Berbatov) so should I dump one of latter three or perhaps Sterling?

    Begovic
    Rafael, Riise, Baines
    Pienaar, Bale (v), Mata, Sterling
    Tevex, Berbatov, RVP (c)

    Nelen, Routledge, Wilson

I have a free transfer left but was going to save it until next GW.

I'm an arsenal fan who just can't get myself to put Van Persie. I just can't celebrate anymore if he gets points and it feels dishonorable to see him on my team. Still can't believe he's wearing their shirt now. Sigh.

Anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

Makes things so so easy for your rivals, so honestly, get him in, and get Podolski/Giroud out!

Im also a gunner, but I have RVP in my team.

The way I see it, this softens the blow of him scoring goals. Its like an emotional hedge 🙂

Whether I captain him or not remains to be seen. My rival will captain him, and he supports United, so I could captain him and hope for United to stutter, that way I win...

Have you guys noticed issues with the standings in some of the league tables?
For example on the right hand side of the screen where it shows the list of all the leagues you’re in, it says I’m 21st in one of the leagues yet when you go into the full league table itself it says I’m 13th.
Same with some other private leagues I’m in too where the standings don’t match up.
It’s like as if they’re still amending the league tables but it’s been like that all week and we’re almost at another deadline so strange.

Can anyone tell me why Cameron is a better pick than Wilkinson? and,

Whats the deal with Williamson? Is he a relatively sound investment. (I have faith that Newcastle will tighten up even without Tiote)

I liked Williamson but others on here who appear to know more than I do about the Newcastle defense seem to think that he will be rotated with Saylor.

Newcastle defense hasn't been that reliable up to now though.

Cameron is def more nailed on, specially with Wilson out and no glimpses of shotton anywhere.

Williamson, Id stay away, saylor is too big a player to be out when fit. Id go Simpson if keen on Newcastle

I know this won't be everyones cup of tea on here and it will fail the template team test, but I'm going to go with Giroud on my WC.

Arsenal have decent fixtures for a while now and Giroud definitely features in Wenger's plans. I need a few differentials and he could end up being a good one. I cant afford Santi and Mata and I've chosen Mata for my WC, so Giroud gets me back some Arsenal attacking cover.

Worst case scenario is change him to Ba when Ba is fit again.

I got him in on WC 2 gws back and regret it. Intended to get him out this gw for Ba and now seem lumped with him. Nice to know he's still in people's consideration, but I think there are better options (Ba). Keep an eye on Walcott, he could become Arsenal's top striker.

Walcott has flattered to deceive too many times. Think Wenger has seen enough.

He bought Giroud for a reason and he like splaying his fellow countrymen.

I need to take some risks now to start clawing back an 81 point lead so getting all the same players that my mini league leader has won't cut it. Got to take some risks. Apparently fortune favours the brave.

Arsenal's fixtures are very good and even Utd is a game they can score in.

Think Giroud is good. Been thinking of bringing him in myself but i just can't let go of Suarez or Tevez!

Nomar, Ill be on the WC next week as well.

I fancy going with RVP, Ba, Jelavic as strikers, and Walcott in MF(instead of Pie). So much potential:)

I'd want to see evidence of Walcott up front before investing that kind of coin in him.

Somalion. Chamakh has played zero minutes this season. How is he suddenly going to get gametime ahead of Podolski and Giroud.

Fair point. But do keep funds for a Walcott transfer if needed/or a big hitter who can go out

I'm hampered by a very p*ss poor budget. Not wildcarding earlier and not having many risers in my team means I have to sacrifice.

I'd love RVP, Tevez, Ba, Hazard, Santi, Mata, Bale, Baines and Michu like most of the people on here seem to have, but my funds won't allow it, so I have to cut my cloth accordingly.

Chosing to go with Baines, Bale, Mata and RVP. Michu keeps coming in and out of my team (he's back in at the moment) but no realistic room for Santi and Tevez together.

              Same here, close to 102m.

But a teams possible with RVP + 17M on strikers, Mata and Bale/Valencia/Walcott in MF(+ Michu and 2 rotators) and Baines in defense, with 10M for GKs.

And that can be a fantastic template

And the 17M for me is Ba + Jelavic

I've done Bale, Mata, Michu with Sterling and McAnuf as rotators. To show you the depth of my poverty, I only have £100.1m to play with.

That kind of cuts down the options once you add Baines to your def and RVP to your strikers.

Quite happy with my WC team now despite the defensive cheapness:

    Tremmel Begovic

Cameron Wilkinson (Yes 3 Stoke defenders) Nelson Cuellar Baird

Bale Mata Oscar Michu Gera (good fixtures for a couple of weeks but can switch to McAnuff or Sterling easily enough)

    RVP Ba Tevez

1.1 in the bank so, if Walcott proves to be playing a more attacking near striker role I have enough to do Oscar -> Walcott. If he doesn't then 1.1 to beef up a defender or two. What do we think? 😀

Mata and Oscar, Chelsea dont have good fixtures for a couple of weeks. Three Stoke is too much, but I think you know that.

Don't need good fixtures for Mata anyway. It's an awful lot but this season there are no defensive powerhouses so might as well go cheap.

yes cheap but double stoke is enough atleast give yourself an option to rotate. Mata is a good pick no doubt, it was Mata and Oscar I was questioning.

Well Oscar is an attacking mid in the Chelsea mid and is a very good player, I'm kind of expecting him to begin to produce. Can swap him though.

Yup, if you have Mata, Id keep Pienaar except for Oscar, and do Pie--Walcott, when we get certainty on his role.

Id probably go with Sterling from the off. His price will rise, and he is in decent form.

I like the stoke triple up. Why not?

      Nice team

I am tempted by Sterling too, was thinking a Gera to Sterling switch after two weeks to avoid Sterling's bad fixtures.

Yeah I think it could work well. Thanks James 😀
