Watchlist

The Watchlist – Ryan Nelsen

If you’re currently considering the Fantasy merits of QPR’s Ryan Nelsen, one thing is for certain – you can’t be accused of chasing points. With just Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 18 points garnered over the first nine Gameweeks, the former Blackburn man has hardly set the Fantasy world alight this term but the Kiwi is starting to suggest he could offer us a viable cut-price defensive option.

Having missed the first two matches of the 2012/13 campaign after his Olympic Games exertions with New Zealand, Nelsen couldn’t have asked for a more difficult debut as Mark Hughes’ side were seen off 3-1 at the Etihad in Gameweek 3. The following week, however, his first game in front of the Loftus Road faithful not only produced an unexpected clean sheet against Chelsea but also earned the centre-half maximum FPL bonus points, helping his owners to a nine point return.

While Anton Ferdinand seems to have fallen out of favour since that Gameweek 4 goalless draw, starting just a single game since, Nelsen has been the only mainstay in the ever-changing QPR defence, with Hughes clearly reliant on his physical presence and organisational skills at the heart of the back-four. Although the R’s have failed to register another clean sheet, Nelsen again picked up bonus in his second home match despite the home side falling 2-1 to West Ham.

Over the past couple of Gameweeks, QPR’s resilience at the back has propelled Nelsen onto our recently updated Watchlist rankings. With just a single goal conceded against Everton and Arsenal, there are hopes that Hughes’ side are finally starting to tighten up just in time for a trio of crucial fixtures for the Premier League basement-dwellers.

If Hughes is to engineer a climb out of the drop zone, the upcoming home games against Reading and Southampton, with a trip to Stoke sandwiched in between, will be vital to the R’s prospects. There’s no doubt his acquisition would be something of a punt but if you fancy picking up Nelsen purely for home games alone, his next five Loftus Road showdowns read (REA, SOT, AVL, FUL, WBA) all the way up to Gameweek 19. Priced at 4.0 in FPL and 3.9 in the Sky Sports game, there are few cut-price defensive options who offer such a consistency of starts with decent home fixtures to follow.

Possibly if Cazorla doesn't score better. Either Tony or Bale will be incoming. As I have Mata and Hazard I quite like the idea of Tony V and RVP to compliment.

You know when you bet against your team to ease the pain of the worst result happening?

    RVP(C) is exactly the same.

Let's put it this way, don't double up on the outcome you want, if you value your mental health.

In my ideal world arsenal win 8-0, RVP misses three penalties and gets sent off. Not going to hold my breath on it though.

I really don't understand the Giroud love around here. He costs 8.4m and has just 1 goal and 1 assist so far yet loads seems to have him and some have even handed him the armband on occasion. Watching him play does nothing to encourage a bandwagon yet somehow one started anyway.

He isn't a flair pick to get tempted by like Kolarov or HBA, he's just crap.

I agree it's a bit premature getting him but he is far from crap. I think after this GW he is a very viable option, not one that I am considering personally, but still a very good option who has the possibility of being the best way into the Arsenal attack.

He's had touches of real class, is constantly making great runs in dangerous areas and intelligent passes in the same. It just hasn't come off for some reason.

I was one who captained him again Norwich, obviously regret the decision and will be shipping him out for Ba as was always the intention. I just has greater expectation of Arsenal as a team and still think he could come good. A Giroud Walcott partnering could be lucrative for them both.

Perhaps I'm being harsh describing him as crap. When I've seen him play it reminds me a little of Torres when he was first at Chelsea, it just doesn't seem to be working for Giroud. 8.4m is a lot for someone with 1 goal, 1 assist that hasn't been nailed on.

Typical got caught at the end of the last page

Quite happy with my WC team now despite the defensive cheapness:

    Tremmel Begovic

Cameron Wilkinson (Yes 3 Stoke defenders) Nelson Cuellar Baird

Bale Mata Oscar Michu Gera (good fixtures for a couple of weeks but can switch to McAnuff or Sterling easily enough)

    RVP Ba Tevez

1.1 in the bank so, if Walcott proves to be playing a more attacking near striker role I have enough to do Oscar -> Walcott. If he doesn’t then 1.1 to beef up a defender or two. What do we think?

Stick Defoe in for Ba who isn't gonna play anyway...Defoe may get another increase this week(27% towards just today and after last nights increase) and play on Saturday whilst Ba is leaking owners at a rate of knots... 4000 today and could even drop by 0.1 if that carries on....I'd pick Defoe and have the price increase for this week and next and then do a ft at the end of next week...could give you an extra 0.3 and with a player playing on saturday...

Can I please get suggestions on how to get RVP on this team:

    Foster Begovic

    Gorkss Baines Demel Hangeland Clyne

Cazorla Bale Michu Ben Arfa Pienaar

    Tevez Fletcher Ba

    1.5m in bank.

It would really hurt your team. Are you on WC?

      If so, downgrade:

      Foster > Rudy/Guzan (0.7)
      Hangeland > Hughes (0.5)
      Ben Arfa > McAnuff/Kightly (2.8)/(2.4)
      and
      Baines > Raf or
Pienaar > Michu > Morrison for extra 0.4ish.

      Then Fletcher to RVP

If not on WC Dump Tevez and one of mids. (i'd want to keep tevez though)

Thanks. No im not on a WC. I have it available though so could use it. Im grand with the first three but dont really want to lose Baines, Pienaar or Michu though.

I know. And there lies the rub. At least one would have to make way... or Bale or Mata. I think an RVP, Tevez, Ba frontline would make up for any loss.

Im definately keeping Bale and Caz anyway, though might transfer Caz to Mata at some point. Of Michu, Pienaar and Baines who would you get rid of and for who?

    Bego (JJ)

Baines - Nelsen - Clark (Gorkss - Wilson)
Michu - Mata - Santi - Morrison (Sterling)
    RVP - Tevez - Berb

Went Gervinho > Morrison few days back. No more FT.

Should I go Wilson > Cameron? Clark is a doubt but I am thinking don't take a hit for a defender? Of course - I will want to shift Wilson soon anyway.

Next week however ironically I was thinking of doing Berba > Ba and Clark > Sagna again, for a hit.

    Thoughts?

      C)Cazorla->Morrison and Wilson->Shawcross(4 point hit)
      D)Cazorla->Mcanuff, Wilson->Wilkinson and Torres->RVP(8 point hit)
