From The Physio

From the Physio – Gameweek 10

This week’s update, sees Dimitar Berbatov fall languidly, once again, firmly on the Scout’s physio plinth, landing a further body-blow to Fantasy Managers, this time squarely in the ribs.

Commenting after the Reading match Martin Jol confessed that Dimitar Berbatov received a pain-killing injection at half-time to facilitate his second half appearance:

“He needed an injection to play in the second half, and showed a lot of character. We need to have a look at it because maybe it’s broken, but it was very painful”

Fuelled with adrenaline from an enthralling encounter and with the character of his team in mind, this is perhaps a slight over-reaction from Jol, as it would be very unlikely, even reckless, for a medic to allow a player to carry on with a suspected, even moderately, fractured rib. To do so, risks further complications, indeed, a punctured lung form an awkward fall or a mis-placed elbow or knee would not be unusual during a football match of the intensity of the Premier League. Of course some football clubs are more ruthless than others, but, even so, a fractured rib would usually exhibit pain and swelling to such an extent that would render them unable to continue regardless of any interventions.

Additionally, it must also be noted that segments of the Thoracic Spine and the surrounding nerve and soft-tissue can often refer pain to present classic symptoms of a cracked rib, so too can a pneumothorax or respiratory muscle damage. These points cast further doubt on such a swift diagnosis before an x-ray could be administered.

On a final note, reports today suggest that Berbatov has the desire and appetite to continue playing until he is 40. The timing of this statement is interesting. Berbatov comes across as an introverted, sensitive soul and such sunny optimism is not usually the mind-set of a player in the middle of an injury. Anyway, if it were fractured and treated Berbatov would be sporting a fetching, compressive corset type garment to facilitate healing and, on recent form, surely this photograph would have found its way onto his Facebook page by now.

Personally, I feel Berbatov suffered a minor soft-tissue injury, which, in all likelihood, will be resolved by the weekend, which should see him grace the pitch at Craven Cottage, as Everton roll up, with the insouciant grace and style to which we have become accustomed.

😆 For those who own both at the same time. I imagine a hit as well - an FT plus a hit. It's dealing with pressing matters first rather than chasing after market trends and differentials.

I'm almost in the same situation. I've got a list of injuries on the bench, plus the absentee Guthrie, who were told to stay off the training ground, even though he's back already, and a suspended Pienaar.

I was forced to play a 10-men formation last week so I just had to take the hit to avoid the same situation. Defoe will be a good one, although he's not a long-term one for me. Will be looking to get Ba back in at some point in the next few GWs.

    Morning,

Rvp or Bale for C ?
I've captained Bale twice this season, both times I/he failed.

    thanks

Question is, can RVP score against his old club? I expect at least one goal or an assist from him, but then again, as a Defoe owner, Defoe is quite capable of scoring more than once (that he's proven before) so I'm leaning towards Defoe at the moment. Things might change when the deadline comes tomorrow.

My biggest rival has bale, but no rvp, so it's decision between risk or playing safe.

Currently have it on RVP.....could change it to Bale in an instant though

Demel is a cheap defender. He'll be back at some point and all he would do with WHU fixtures is grace the bench.

Keep him and do Gibbs to Sagna or a MU defender if you can afford it.

It's good advice, get rid of the expensive injured defender and don't take a hit on the injured cheap defender.

Not necessarily...Gibbs is also injured and is the more expensive injured player...getting in Sagna/Huth who are both cheaper is not a bad idea...You should read posts properly. He's not getting rid of Gibbs for the sake of it...it's because he is also injured.

Leave Gibbs, he'll be just fine and you dont really need him this week anyway.

Do Demel>Cameron and play him this week. Then Gibbs comes back into the reckoning from next week and your DF will be looking strong withg just one trannie spent

No confirmation that I've heard but from what I read in the aftermath of him getting injured was that it wasnt a serious injury and he would be back playing soon. Since then I've heard very little.

Hope he is back as he's definitely pencilled in for my side against Fulham

I was tempted to bench Carzola , however Arsenal play better against good teams , and im sure they can score a goal or two , even if they lose

Michu could score too , and Pienaar and Sterling

It tricky alright , will probably bench Strling for the simple reason that i originally bought him as a benchwarmer , even though logically im not sure it the correct decision

                    Lat got GK dilema.

                    Have got Jask and Davies.

                    a) Keep Jask during tough games.
                    b) Transfer Jask out for Bego. Bego price seems too high but stroke fixtures looks good.
                    c) Transfer Davies out for Mannone as Ars have good fixtures. But Sczeny back. Who will be the 1st choice amongst the 2
                    d) Keep Jask and transfer Davies for Mcarthy. Dont see Rdg keeping CS but they got an extra game in hand.
                    e) Keep Jask and play him during the tough games

Any opinions, strongest looks Jask to Beg. Differential could be Ars gk and Rdg option could also pay off.

When in doubt, trust the scientist. Carl Sagan is a giant of cosmology 😉

I don't think Sagna will be under enough threat to worry about. He'll be my choice. But Nelsen does offer a bit more than just occasional CS - he is a bonus points magnet. He is very good value.

Stoke have better fixtures, would do Wilkinson for 4,4 or Cameron for 4,5.
Or Baird, who will give you an extra mid for 4,5

Morrison played defensive mid last game because Yacob was out...if Yacob is still out...it might mean Morrison stays there...I'd be concerned about this...but I don't want to put you off as Morrison in his normal position has been rather productive this season.

It's a tough call. Morrison plays for the better side but Lallana looks promising and is on corners/set pieces I think.

Both great choices for that price bracket. I think Lallana will be more consistent 5-7 pts a lot of weeks . But Morrison has a greater chance of a double digit score now and again. I really don't think you can go wrong with either.

YES Facer appears and Berba looks good to go.

Arsenal news, third paragraph interesting ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20168403)

Gervinho, who was scored five goals in 11 games in all competitions this season, will miss Saturday's trip to Manchester United.

He is also set to sit out the Champions League game at Shalke 04, Ivory Coast's friendly against Austria and the Premier League matches against Fulham and Tottenham.

Wenger: "Basically the squad should be approximately the squad we had last week," Wenger said of this weekend's match at Old Trafford.

"We have no comebacks, no Wojciech [Szczesny], no [Kieran] Gibbs, no [Abou] Diaby."

I'm thinking Walcott could be a cheaper alternative/differential to the big hitters this season...if he plays he's got to have at least 10 goals in him!

I wonder how many times the armband will swap between Bale and RVP before the deadline tomorrow? And how many times will I switch between benching Pie and Sterling...

I suppose they're good problems to have but it doesn't make the decision easier!

Bale (c) and Sterling bench is the latest combo. It's actually the one I started with as well.

I think I might outsource my decision this week and have a look at stats and projections (both from this site and blogs I read). They back up Bale (c) and Sterling bench, with the exception of the week old FFS projections who seem to think Sterling's 5 shots vs Reading is sutainable, although he only had 2 vs, Everton with 0 finding the target.

The only other viable alternatives would be to get rid of Hazard or Tevez and I would like to keep both of them. I have a week to ponder, I am sure some of the results this weekend will make my decision easier. Or harder. Ah feck it!
