Mata Back In Training

Juan Mata returned to training today with Chelsea, on the eve of their Champions League tie with Shakhtar Donetsk. The Spaniard missed Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Swansea with a hamstring injury, along with Brazilian defender, David Luiz. Both were involved in Chelsea’s session today and Roberto Di Matteo remarked in his press conference earlier that the pair will be assessed before he decides on whether they will be included for tomorrow evening’s tie.

“We need to wait for the last session tonight to check the availability for tomorrow and see how they come through tonight in the training session.”

Mata would now seem highly likely to be in the frame for the a return to league action when Chelsea take on Liverpool at the weekend. Indeed, Mata’s Fantasy owners will likely be hoping that the playmaker is handed an extended rest tomorrow evening, to keep him fresh and preserved for Sunday’s encounter.

Mata has been sold by almost 20,000 trigger happy Fantasy Premier League managers this week, having risen from 8.9 to 9.4 since Gameweek 8 following a storming run of form that has seen him fetch four goals and five assists in his previous five league starts.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      agreed everyone bangs on about his potential but he is well overhyped because of his off field antics! Yes he has games where he is unplayable but they never last for me than 2-3 games, see the euros for example.

      I totally agree. Most people say stuff like "If he got his attitude right he'd be great" I don't see it. He hasn't scored yet in the prem this season. His poor scoring record is even poorer when you consider most of the goals he scores are penalties that Aguero could also tuck away.

      Bottom line, he seems to cost Man City more games than he wins for them.

      I think it's actually an insult to all the good players in Europe that he's been nominated for the Balon D'Or on the basis of a game against Germany at the euros.

        Scored against Ireland too + 17 goals for Premier League Champions last season in all competitions so it's not that ludicrous, as the list is something like 20 or 30 players, but agreed that there are better ones who did not make the final cut. Just saying it's not that unreasonable.

            Ha. Fair enough but the award is voted on by coaches and captains of international teams as well as journalists so an inclusion in a list of top 20-30 over the past year is not unreasonable by any means. he was superb in city's title run - last 3-4 months of 2012 and had a top 20-30 in the world Euro.
