Technical Area

The Technical Area – Fulham’s Attacking Dilemma

The summer departure of Clint Dempsey to Tottenham had many Fantasy managers worried that the goals would dry up for Fulham this term. Martin Jol’s side have shown little ill-effects of the American’s decision to move to pastures new, however, and, with a trio of new arrivals offering alternatives up front, the Cottagers have already found the net on 21 occasions, with only Chelsea (22) and United (26) proving more lethal in front of goal.

Dimitar Berbatov, Hugo Rodallega and Mladen Petric have all added a significant threat and with Bryan Ruiz finally settling down after a difficult debut season, the attacking returns have been plentiful. After 10 Gameweeks, the quartet have produced 124 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points between them, with only eight points separating the top (Berbatov, 35) from the bottom (Rodallega, 27). It’s little wonder that in an interview towards the end of last month, Jol admitted he was yet to discern the best front pairing in his preferred 4-4-2 formation:

“What is my best forward line? That is still my problem – and it’s already October. Ruiz is probably my most creative player but on the other hand Berbatov is a very good second striker. It’s like a luxury problem. The thing is we started the season with Moussa Dembele, Bryan Ruiz and Mladen Petric against Norwich and it was probably our best game of my time here. Then we had Rodallega and Berba against West Brom and it was another great game. I feel that Berba is not a typical No.9 and that is why I’m playing Rodallega because he has pace and he stretches defences.”

Berbatov’s Starts So Far…

Intriguingly, last Saturday’s 2-2 home draw with Everton was the first time Jol had fielded Ruiz and Berbatov as his front two this season, after the Costa Rican climbed off the bench at Reading to grab a goal and assist and earn himself a starting berth. Berbatov had previously been the deep-lying forward, the creator at the centre of his side’s attacking forays, but Ruiz was handed this role last weekend, with the former United man tasked with leading the line instead.

Fulham v Everton
Berbatov Average Position

As the average position map from Saturday’s game (left) shows, however, Berbatov’s (9) natural instinct to drop deep in search of possession meant he occupied the same area as Ruiz (11) all too often, but with no one ahead of him to stretch the opposition backline, Fulham suffered as a result. Indeed, looking at Berbatov’s average positions for each of his appearances so far (right), only once – in the Gameweek 5 trip to Wigan – has he played so deep; bearing in mind he was the support striker in each of those games, the problem is more apparent and, allied with the stats below, suggests the pair might not be the best-suited starting partnership for Jol.

By some distance, Berbatov saw less of the ball when alongside Ruiz than in any of his appearances in the Fulham first XI so far. The Bulgarian managed just 47 touches, almost half the number of his previous match away to Reading, and 22 less than his previous low of 69 in the Gameweek 8 home win over Villa; Ruiz, on the other hand, had 80 touches – more indicative of Berbatov’s previous level.

Berbatov’s Fantasy owners will also be a little concerned with the fact he had just 17 touches in the final third – the least number in a home match by some distance and, while this mirrored his previous season low at Wigan, the Bulgarian’s involvement in the DW encounter afforded him a touch every 1.1 minutes – this figure dropped to 2 minutes on Saturday, compared to Ruiz’s 1.2.

Indeed, Berbatov received a pass every 4.1 minutes against Everton and made just 24 successful passes all game – once again, these totals were significantly lower than any of his previous starts, with Ruiz recording 2.4 and 46 respectively. Worryingly, the Bulgarian made just six successful passes in the final third – his previous two home matches afforded him a combined tally of 43, with his previous low at the Cottage 16.

In terms of threat, Berbatov –despite playing as the furthest forward – had his worst game for Fulham. He managed just three touches in the box, compared to 16 over his previous two home games, and had a season low for both overall shots and attempts in the box. Bearing in mind the least he had previously managed all season was three attempts, it’s fair to say that Saturday – despite his assist for Steve Sidwell’s goal – was something of a disappointment. As Jol mentions above, Berbatov isn’t a typical centre-forward and needs someone in front of him to stretch the opposition backline, allowing the Bulgarian more space to manoeuvre and room to drift into. With Ruiz tucked in behind him, it simply didn’t happen.

Berbatov’s Forward Partners

In terms of game time, Jol’s faith in Berbatov is obvious – the Bulgarian has finished every game he has started for Fulham and, when fit, will surely be the first name on his manager’s team sheet. Over his five first XI appearances, the former United man has been partnered with Rodallega three times, while Petric and Ruiz have both afforded a single opportunity. Looking at the key attacking stats in each of those matches, it’s intriguing to see the difference:

PartnerChancesPen Box TchsShotsShots (Box)
GW4 (WBA)Rodallega3 (2+1)16 (10+6)13 (7+6)8 (5+3)
GW5 (wig)Rodallega4 (2+2)11 (6+5)7 (5+2)6 (4+2)
GW8 (AVL)Petric1 (1+0)12 (6+6)6 (3+3)5 (3+2)
GW9 (rdg)Rodallega3 (1+2)7 (4+3)5 (3+2)4 (2+2)
GW10 (EVE)Ruiz2 (1+1)3 (3+0)4 (1+3)1 (1+0)

At home to West Brom in Gameweek 4, Berbatov and Rodallega created three chances between them, with the Bulgarian edging it by two to one. They had a combined 16 touches in the box, with Berbatov on 10 to his partner’s six, while they racked up 13 shots between them in the 3-0 win; again, Berbatov just edged it by seven to six. Eight of the duo’s efforts came inside the box, with the Bulgarian managing five in a 3-0 win that also saw Rodallega play the full 90 minutes. Berbatov bagged a brace and maximum FPL bonus for a 13 point return.

Jol kept faith in the partnership for the Gameweek 5 trip to Wigan and was rewarded with a 2-1 win, with Rodallega playing all but three minutes of the match against his former club. This time, they both created a couple of chances for team mates and had 11 touches between them in the box, with Berbatov narrowly ahead by six to five. Their goal threat diminished from the previous match, with a combined seven shots, though Berbatov’s stats were almost as strong as the week before – he had five efforts to his partner’s two. Looking at the efforts from close-range, though, there was little difference – the pair produced six attempts inside the box, with Berbatov offering double the Colombian’s tally of two. This time Berbatov grabbed an assist and maximum bonus, returning eight points for his FPL owners.

A Gameweek 8 home clash with Villa saw Rodallega miss out – Petric was the replacement. The Croatian lasted 63 minutes before being hauled off and while Jol’s front two created just a single chance between them, Petric matched Berbatov for touches in the box (six) and total attempts (three), despite playing almost half an hour less in the 1-0 win. Berbatov still offered three shots from close range, just bettering Petric’s tally, but the Bulgarian picked up just two FPL points this time round.

In the 3-3 draw at Reading the following weekend, Rodallega was reinstalled alongside Berbatov but lasted just 58 minutes before being replaced. In spite of this, he still created more chances ( two to one) and has the same number of efforts inside the box (two), though the duo’s combined touches in the box dropped to seven, with the Bulgarian managing only four – with Ruiz replacing Rodallega and Berbatov moving forward, this was perhaps a sign of what was to follow. With another assist picked up in this one, Berbatov picked up six points.

Last weekend’s stats highlight the dilemma Jol now has. Ruiz was also handed 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw with Everton but his inclusion, and the change of position for Berbatov, definitely came at a cost. Looking at the pair as a partnership, they had three touches in the box over the full 90 minutes – while Berbatov had three, Ruiz failed to register even one. Although the Costa Rican had three shots to his partner’s one, all his efforts were from distance, with his fortunate assist coming from a combination of the goalpost and Tim Howard’s back. Between them, they offered a single effort from inside the box all game, with Berbatov also a little lucky to grab an assist and a five point haul.

Post-match, Jol explained his thinking again after the hosts escaped with a point in a match the Toffees dominated:

“Petric got injured a few weeks ago and I had to do something. I needed another striker, so I started with Hugo Rodallega and Dimitar Berbatov at Wigan and that was OK and Rodallega scored, so I left it, so that cost him his place. It’s all about momentum. If Rodallega scores against Wigan, I want to leave him in. Never change a winning team is the principle.”

While Fulham remain unbeaten in the five matches Berbatov has started, with three wins and two draws, the stats above certainly raise question marks as to Ruiz’s suitability to play alongside him. In terms of FPL returns and overall threat, Rodallega certainly seems to bring out the best in the Bulgarian, with his style complementing Berbatov’s far more efficiently. From touches in the box to overall shots and close-range threat, they look a better balance. More importantly for Fantasy managers are the cold, hard statistics – Berbatov has averaged nine FPL points per start alongside Rodallega, compared to 3.5 without him.

Any changes needed this week? BANK = £2.5m, 1 free transfer:

    Begovic(QPR)
    Rafael(avl) Baines(SUN) Santon(WHU)
    Cazorla(FUL) Bale(mci) Maloney(WBA) Michu(sou)
    Ba(WHU) Van Persie(avl) Berbatov(ars)

subs - Foster, Sterling, Cuellar, Demel

Was looking at potential City and Chelsea cover really. Think it's necessary? It is a bit worrying having neither. Could do one of the options below for a hit and give my team a bit more top 4 coverage?

    1. Bale & Berbatov > Mata (any £9.6m Mid) & Tevez
    2. Bale & Berbatov > Oscar/Fellaini/Ramirez (£8m Mid) > Aguero

    ... or save my transfer?

For this week I'd just do the Berbatov-Tevez transfer. Can you afford it on its own?

Tough, your team looks really good, though either of those would improve it imo.

If 2) I'd have a risky Fellaini. That said he'll probably pick up his 5th. But it's only one game and you have cover.

Ya know I think Ferguson was a genius to bring in a proven top goalscorer like RVP.
Its not just having RVP cos he scores tho, but taking that huge burden off Rooneys shoulders has seemed to release him. He's back enjoying his football again, taking chances, playing more instinctively and being far more creative. Seeing his energy used behind RVP when United dont have the ball is a real boost to the team as well cos for a change he has someone good in front of him when he wins the ball back.
RVP may score 30 goals this season but if United win anything it'll be the Rooney factor that'll decide it. Its given United that creative genius the lacked for the last few seasons when Rooney was trying to score all the goals.
Thinking he spent 30m on Berbatov to try get that and he had it there all along, should have bought a top top finisher like RVP that time instead......

The biggest dilemma I have atm is the fact I have Pienaar.

If I didn't, I would do Cazorla/Bale -> Fellaini in a heartbeat to give me enough cash to upgrade Lambert to Suarez.

Struggling for other ways to bring in Suarez for Lambert before GW15.
Might have to sacrifice Ba for him in GW15...

I'm a bit lost this week fellas. Any ideas?

    Foster (wig)

Rafael (avl) Baines (SUN) Gorkks (NOR)

Bale (mci) Mata (LIV) Michu (sou) Pienaar (SUN)

Rvp (avl) Berbatov (ars) Fletcher (eve)

    Mignolet, Sterling, Cuellar, Demel

    Bank: 0.6 1FT

Fletcher's gotta go but the only trade that really appeals is kone due to budget restraints. Alternatively I could roll it over and get ba/suarez/tevez in that spot. Any other ideas?
Getting sick of every 2nd week following up a good score with a terrible one 👿

Mate, i feel your pain with the good week/bad week cycle. I have made a pact to stop chasing points and stick with consistent points scorers. For example, this week was mulling Bale to Santi, not doing it. Im gonna stop this kind of thing. Bale, RVP, Tevez, Michu, Rafa and Mata should be left in my team and played every week. I can punt on the other spots.

We also have to realise we cant have all the points! I think sometimes im taken in with the Scout Picks and try to get my team looking like that.

Re yours: you have Baines, Rafa, Bale, Mata, Michu, Rvp who should just be left in every week. Fletcher has to go and Kone is a good punt also look at Crouch with fixtures.

With roll over who who you downgrde to afford Fletcher to Tevez?

Thanks SAB. Not quite considered where I'd cull the funds from yet. Would probably have to be bale. Or I could do some trimming and get ba for fletcher.
Kone has some nice home games though and yeah crouchie too though stoke hardly look great going forward

Imo you have a really good squad there so trimming it to get a certain player would be a shame, as i said we cant have all the players. Fletcher to another striker would be fine, this game is meant to be fun too, take a punt on Kone!

Your striker are also crap you should just use 1 city striker.

find the market for players and buy em cheap

not much else! sometimes finding players at the 59 minute mark is good since they just went on auction and might have a cheap buy now price

i used to buy about 10 hulks and make 3-5k on each... i used to buy an all attributes card, apply it then jack up the price

i had the most awesome team in fifa 12 http://img1.uploadscreenshot.com/images/main/7/19504411261.png

        Sick team!

yeh i've watched a few youtube videos so going to start doing the 59th minute trick..

with around 30k though i can't really go for hulks now, i'll have to find some cheaper popular players probably

with the attribute cards how long do they last for? is it until the players contract runs out?

yep gota start small but once you make around 60k you can start the trading going

starting up is the hardest bit and takes weeks to sell the players you buy in

the attribute cards last one game but if u apply the attirbue and put a player on the market his starts look good and he sticks out from the rest of the piles of cards

worked for me for that team above shame ive to lose it in fifa 13

Yeh the attributes make them stick out, as i've bought a couple of players with them.. i'll have a look at that later

well i've actually got 30k now and a big trade pile, then i've kept a few decent players in my squad because i don't want to get rid, so probably will have around 40k to spend trading

whens the best time to sell and buy?? i'm on a different time zone being in Sydney.. that could be an advantage or disadvantage i don't know

There's no obvious alternative for Lambert - so I'm sticking with him. His fixtures are still good and, like others have pointed out above, he's been a little unlucky not to score in recent weeks.

Bout to pull the trigger and do Vertonghen, Bale and Fletcher out, and Cameron, Maloney and RVP in for a 4pt hit. nope, i'll be playing berba, its quite close as i can see west ham scoring.. Newcastle's defence hasn't been the best and now with coloccini out that won't help, which ever way you choose it's not mental!

I do fancy Nolan and Carroll to be well and truly up for it and to score, so I think we both just answered my question.

            berba it is.

Watch a Newcastle massacre, clean sheet and Saylor pops up and heads in a beauty. gutted.

cheers pal....i am GENUINELY excited this way!!! I have been excited a few times this season, but having RVP up there as captain (granted the whole world does, so yea i had to get back on board), and the fact that my entire midfield play at home with amazing fixtures, and 3 or 4 of my back line plus Bego are also at home.............show me the moneyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

        Link ur team mate.

Jesus that's like asking which would you prefer, a cactus up your arse or to see your wife in bed with another bloke!!

Don't you have any other options? I would start all of those if I could. I just shipped out Bale, but he usually does well against us, and against the other big teams, and we all know his form is better away from home. I see him doing alright this week, so I would probably bench McAnuff since Norwich are definitely a team on the up.

bale or mcanuff.......if u dare bench Bale, but it hurt me before. 🙁

I am thinking to bench Pienar and expect Felani to have a good game.

Why have them both then? IF you cant play Pienaar at home to anyone, especially dull Sunderland (they'll concede, forget what you hear about Sunderlands defence day in day out!!), then when can you play him?

You may as well get rid of Pienaar, have another cheap 5th mid, and upgrade somewhere up front or in the back and then play the upgrade.

Watch anyway......Pienaar will be the man this weekend, since every man and his dog has brought fellaini back 🙂

Tempted with Bale -> Walcott (-4) this week. I expect most will say no, but with this plan, is it a feasible strategy?

    GW11: Bale -> Walcott (-4)
    GW12: Save
    GW13: Santi/Walcott, Fellaini & Ba -> Bale, Maloney & Rooney (-4)

This gives me Walcott (FUL, TOT) instead of Bale (mcy, ars) for the next 2 weeks, and also Rooney for his great run starting with (QPR, WHU, rea). It also gives me a couple of weeks to decide which the best Arsenal midfielder is to keep.

Overall I think it's a risky strategy, but the ceilings of players like Walcott and Rooney perhaps make it worthwhile?

Alreet lads. Last night made made my mind up on RVP over Rooney. My latest thinking is Bale + Defoe > Maloney + RVP.

The fact that dembele will miss 1-2 more games makes the decision to sacrifice Bale easier. Also, people keep pointing to his last 3 returns in away games. But only one of them was a hard fixture, the other two were reading and southampton, so it doesn't really show is too much!

      Hey Mr Mag,

Rvp is a decent shout. But i dont want that you sacrifice Bale. M city are not at their best currently.

Whats your other options other than Bale.

        Carzola or Baines out

Or either a 12 pt hit to do Santon + Kolarov + Pienaar + Defoe > Wilkinson + Def & mid (9.3m) + RVP. (eg williamson + Maloney). Could also save getting RVP until QPR, and only having to make a 4pt hit. But I have no real other captain choice this week

Dont want you to get rid of Baines. I would have said Carzola as I dont have him but the strike against Manu shows he has talent.

Then you have no option to take Bale out.

Try and see if you can get Roon over RVP and keeping Bale too. If thats possible I would do Roon over RVP

Because he's a flair player and not used to the pace and physicality of the P.L quite yet. Plus, to be honest, in today's case, the goalie headed it straight to him and as a professional footballer it wasn't beyond belief to half volley into an empty net, regardless of how far out he was.

He's had a couple of long range quality strikes and been in the right places at the right times in the C.L.

Next round/month he might hit 4 goals in the league and be the worst player on the pitch in the C.L.

He's young, in a new country, a new team, with a new manager, and a new league. In time, he'll be consistent enough to be a regular in any fantasy team.

I think he could, but it will be tough being the third number ten behind Mata and Hazard. Plus he competes on a secondary level with Ramires and Lampard.... And?

His best shot for regular PL starts will be on the back of dreadful form or injury from his competition.

Although, like you, his price always makes me consider a punt!
