Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 11

They may well be on the verge of one-match bans, but the form of Merseyside pairing Luis Suarez and Marouane Fellaini is alluring enough to see them both climb in our Watchlist rankings this week. Elsewhere, Juan Mata looks to have regained fitness to rise in the reckoning once again, while lingering doubts over Demba Ba’s fitness dent his stock ahead of a potentially flourishing run of opponents.

The current, updated rankings are available in your sidebar. Read on for details and the factors at play behind this latest refresh…

Goalkeepers

Stoke’s Asmir Begovic holds firm at the top, as his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) stock continues to rise ahead of a favourable run of fixtures. The Potters have such an obliging schedule over the coming weeks, a rotation option with Begovic isn’t urgently required, although QPR’s Julio Cesar, West Ham’s Jussi Jaaskelainen and Newcastle’s Tim Krul offer strong options for Stoke’s next two away fixtures.

Krul is, himself, a good solo route for the coming weeks, even without the steadying influence of Fabricio Coloccini in front of him for the next three. The Magpies stopper rotates perfectly with Sunderland’s Simon Mignolet and that looks a solid pairing from this point on for those with the budget to spend in this area.

Further down we are potentially robbed of Reading’s Alex McCarthy as a consideration given his recent shoulder injury, while the Southampton option as a save-point stopper is killed off by uncertainty over starts, given Artur Boruc’s disciplinary investigation at the club. Similarly, Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczęsny is not currently on the menu, although we’d expect the number one jersey to be confirmed once he returns to fitness – possibly this weekend. The Pole has now fallen to 5.3 in the FPL and would offer the cheapest, most secure route into the Gunners defence for their forthcoming run of favourable fixtures.

Defenders

There’s very little movement at the top of the defender rankings, with Leighton Baines and United’s Rafael clear front runners, given their form and fixtures. Both have attacking intent to compliment any clean sheet returns and we’re confident we’ll see both coming to fruition in the coming weeks to justify their high ranking.

Stoke’s Robert Huth is our chosen weapon in Tony Pulis’ defence but there is a range on offer – both full-backs, Andy Wilkinson and Geoff Cameron, make perfect sense given their price tags. Huth has the superior goal threat, however, and could justify the extra outlay over Stoke’s run of three home games in four.

Newcastle’s Steven Taylor now looks nailed-on for starts, having regained his first XI role at Anfield last weekend. The Magpies’ resolve will be dented by the absence of Fabricio Coloccini due to suspension over the next three, but they should have enough to offer some defensive profit, despite the skipper being sidelined.

Wigan’s Emmerson Boyce has an ongoing goal threat and assist potential given his right wing-back role for the Latics, while Reading’s Kaspar Gorkss goes into a fine run of fixtures off the back of an assist and goal in consecutive Gameweeks. He’s the clear candidate for those shopping with pennies, with Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne and QPR’s Ryan Nelsen also available for those who wish to flood the backline with cheap options.

Midfielders

Santi Cazorla’s late strike at Old Trafford issued a reminder of his talents and is enough to see him hold off the claims of Juan Mata on top of the midfield rankings – for now. Mata will be expected to return to Chelsea duty against Liverpool on Sunday and could regain top ranking if Cazorla frustrates in his home clash with Fulham.

Everton’s Marouane Fellaini is pushing that pair hard after another stunning display in the 2-2 at Fulham. The see-saw battle with team-mate Steven Pienaar in the mid-price bracket now looks to be falling firmly in the Belgian’s favour, although with a one-match ban imminent, there is a clear price to pay for switching allegiance to Fellaini.

There are some very strong mid-price options as always, with United’s Antoinio Valencia beginning to suggest that he can offer at least partial cover of United’s attack for those unable to stretch to Robin Van Persie up top. Southampton’s Adam Lallana has the fixtures to inflict damage in the coming weeks – he’s currently our preferred option over Gaston Ramirez, although we’ll be monitoring his impact at the weekend to consider whether the Uruguayan should return to our radars after his recent injury.

Swansea’s Michu continues to pick up suitors and warrants such attention given his role up front for Michael Laudrup’s side. Swansea’s fixtures revive strongly soon and that should give Michu the platform to deliver more goals.

Lower down, Arsenal’s Theo Walcott could well offer a very strong and potentially more explosive alternative to Cazorla in the Arsenal midfield, while Wigan’s Shaun Maloney and Reading’s Jobi McAnuff keep Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling company as prize budget options.

Forwards

Demba Ba’s niggling shin injury prevents him from remaining in our top three forwards and challenging the likes of Carlos Tevez and Robin Van Persie. Fixtures remain stacked in favour of the Senegalese striker but we have to reserve judgement, having seen Ba limp off at Anfield just after half-time.

His decline has allowed Luis Suarez to jump in the rankings and, despite tough fixtures to come and looming suspension for a fifth booking, the Uruguyan has to figure in our thinking. His form is strong enough to suggest that he will go on firing in shots and score the goals to keep pace with the Golden Boot front runners.

Suarez’s claims aren’t enough to displace the proven class of both Tevez and Van Persie, who surely offer the best route to covering the United and City attacks. While City are struggling for fluency up top, it still seems a risk to go forward without some coverage of their potential in attacking terms. With Sergio Aguero seemingly being reserved for full Champions League duty, Tevez appears to have the greater security of starts in the Premier League and has the edge on price, of course.

Outside of the top echelons, Peter Crouch has to remain a consideration, given Stoke’s forthcoming run of opponents that will surely allow the striker to add to his goal tally thus far. His potential keeps him holding firm while the likes of Nikica Jelavic drops due to form and the provision of strong Everton midfield options. Dimitar Berbatov and Jermain Defoe also slide with tough schedules in front of them – Defoe now seems under some threat from Emmanuel Adebayor, certainly in terms of pitch time.

The bugdget market still looks somewhat stifled, with both Rickie Lambert and Pavel Pogrebnyak unsure of starting roles. Wigan’s Arouna Kone is perhaps an intriguing option with some favourable home fixtures to come. QPR’s Djibril Cisse is also one to watch should he cement a starting role in the weeks to come. He could feature on the Watchlist if he can impress this weekend.

Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud is perhaps your key differential. The Frenchman clearly has the potential to deliver strong returns if he and Arsenal can click over what is a very strong run of fixtures leading up to Christmas.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Depends. If Walcott plays I'd go with him at the moment over Valencia, providing you have either RVP or Rooney already. Valencia's stats look good but currently without product. Walcott on the other hand could be the guy to 'go it alone' if Giroud is still sucking this time in 2 weeks.

Will Southampton keep clean sheet? Wigan & Fulham both scored 2 at their ground even Villa scored, no clean sheet all season, so probably not, Clyne assist - possible?. So probably 1 or 2 points but could get 4 or 5 if lucky assist.........

OK let me clarify what I mean... 🙂
Obv it counts, but the watchlist is supposed to be an indication of a threat to score points, and I didnt feel like this goal was a particular indication that he is ready to score heavy points due to the circumstances in which it was scored, ie. not a particular filip to score against the leaky united defence, as you could see united had stopped playing, as there was no time for arsenal to get 2 and it was Arsenal's first shot on target of thw match.

To me this is far less of an indication than opening the scoring, especially had he shown the kind of threat he did during his early season form when playing well and not scoring big fantasy points especially.

I thought Cazorla had a very poor game at Old Trafford

The watchlist is a ranking that lists players according to our view on how they will perform in the next 3-4 weeks. See my point below about who would rank above Cazorla right now. As mentioned, Mata will rise to the top should we be absolutely certain of fitness and pitch time but, right now, we're not, so Cazorla has it.

*Arsenal has a poor game at Old Trafford. Cazorla played as well as was possible given his team's performance and showed his class with a good goal. I much prefer having players that produce with limited opportunity ie. Fletcher than those who scorn hundreds ie. Suarez. Cazorla is going to be the main man at Arsenal, with only Walcott rivalling him, and I can't see how they won't score well over the next 10 weeks.

But he was top ranked before Sunday and scored - hardly grounds for us to topple him. Given that Mata isn't absolutely certain to face Liverpool (not an easy game), which other midfielder would you put above Cazorla given that he's scored 3 goals already and has very strong fixtures from now until Xmas?

For my money - if you had to pick any mid for the next few weeks, you'd go Cazorla with Mata second until we know for 100% that he plays vs Liverpool. That's what the Watchlist says. Fellaini has the suspension looming, Bale is somehow faltering at home and has tough fixtures, Hazard is overshadowed by Mata. Who is left that is a better option?

Possibly. I think they are just conservative away from home. Plus we can't read much into Swansea without Mata there. It's still a brave man that goes forward without a Chelsea mid I reckon.

Hmmm I must admit i didnt know he went into the Old Trafford game top of the watchlist, so can understand your reasoning on that.

I think Bale offers the most consistent threat - particularly away from home as Granville pointed out.
But i suppose i can see your reasoning.

Maybe its just opinion, but a lot of his potential seems to come from his position within the Arsenal set-up, but I'm not sure that the players in that position last season scored particularly heavily either.

Yeah, fair enough, some people just don't fancy him - Granville being one. He has delivered on his numbers though in an Arsenal side that's really struggled to this point barring the West Ham game. If Walcott can get in the side and inject some pace, I think we'll see Cazorla close on the top mids. Having said that, we're still not 100% clear on how he works with Wilshere, so things could change.

          ie. too deep
I wanted Walcott at the start of the sesaon becuase it seemed that the ARS "wide" forwards began playing more as "inside" forwards midway through last season with full backs providing width, and the signing of Podolski seemed to me to inidicate this would continue.
But Wenger's fetish for contrarian decisions seems to have held that up

Yep, I mention Walcott's potential to surpass Cazorla in the article. Right now, as of today, Walcott carries some risk and I'd rather go with Cazorla if I was picking one. Next week, after inflicting damage on Fulham, things might change. Like I say, I've hinted at that in the article.

Torres is omitted because you'd either be doubling on Chelsea attacking options or you'd be going without Mata/Hazard. That dents Torres as an option and rules him out of the top rankings - would you really go Torres at 9.8 over Mata at 9.4 in mid? I try to build this in when compiling the rankings. It might not be scientific but I think options elsewhere in the team should impact on a player's worth.

The stats would suggest that Huth does not necessarily have the superior goal threat to Cameron. Huth has set pieces but Cameron's assist potential and general position is much more threatening. And at 0.9 cheaper its a no brainer in my mind

good post. huth will let you down, you cant predict when those goals are coming as the fixtures make very little difference to his attacking threat (hes up there for set pieces and thats it regardless of who it's against) whereas cameron is more likely to be getting further forward thus threatening more during a good run of fixtures. huth is massively overrated and is a complete waste of money

      Bla. Stats nothing
Experience and common sense tells you that Huth is a beast in the air, 17 goals in the last 3 seasons tells its own stories.
Stats will tell you Huth doesnt have many chances but it doesn't tell you that all those chances he does have come in and around the 6 yard box, he's doesn't do speculative strikes from 25 yards

Stats don't work for a player like Huth. Quality delivery from Adam, Etherington, Kightly etc make him a great option and a top differential.

How solid or otherwise have villa looked at home recently? I'm trying to decide whether I can afford to hold off a week or two before getting in a man utd striker. I really can't decide who to downgrade for who, and I would like an extra week to check out some of the candidates. I could check out Bale's much vaunted away form before I get rid of him, and i would like a further look at kightly, lallana and ramirez as possible replacements. It would also save me 4pts. BUT i don't really have an obvious captain choice if I don't get RVP.

Best striker for 7.5m or less?

    a) Fletcher

    b) Berbatov

    c) Lambert

    d) Crouch

I have Fletcher and may stick with him. His fixtures are good and MON will get Sunderland scoring soon. Surely, their training this week is about attack, attack, attack!

Hmm.. yes. Saying Suarez isn't as good an option as Tevez and misses lots of chance is slagging him off. And all because I support United (Tevez plays for City). This makes sense.

I had him last year through a terrific run of fixtures and was totally burned. Cannot understand why you would get him ahead of Tevez. As a 3rd striker option he's fine if you can afford him, but certainly not as a 2nd.

There were approx 500k playing last season. I was top 10 until christmas but I used most of my transfers by then and ended up in the top 100. The game isn't very good for interacting with and there really isn't much you can do with your team.

If you are keen to stick with it then (c) choice is everything. Also you can get caught out alot with so many different deadlines throughout the season so keep tabs on that so you don't get left (c) someone you never intended to.

So Chelsea rightly ban for life the fan accussed/guilty of racist gestures/actions/language. So working of this precedent, they should be looking for a new CB/club captain, correct? Or am I missing something here?

Correct. But they are cheating scum. This whole Mark Clattenburg thing reminds me of a similar incident a few years back where Chelsea accused a ref of doing something. It was found out they were just making it up so they simply retracted the accusations and nobody batted an eyelid.

I think if the same thing happens this time, which I suspect it will be, the outcome might be very different. I can see Clattenburg suing Chelsea for deformation of character, him winning, getting a healthy payout, retiring and Chelsea struggling with every 50/50 decision from here on in. Maybe the FA might also grow a pair and take retro spec five action also.......
