The Watchlist – David Silva

Following a three-match absence through injury, David Silva arrived back in the nick of time for Manchester City’s Gameweek 11 home clash with Spurs last weekend, giving his team a much needed fillip and Fantasy managers a reminder of his sublime talent.

As the game looked to be stuttering to a 1-1 draw it took an 87th minute spark of genius from Silva to win the match, as he brilliantly exchanged passes with substitute Edin Dzeko and his final, killer ball to the Bosnian was duly slammed home. In addition to the assist, Silva also received two Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for his efforts in turning the game around and accrued a modest but significant seven-point total to herald a welcome top-flight return.

Since his opening day penalty miss at home to Southampton and subsequent 71st minute substitution Silva has struggled to recapture the stunning 2011/12 form that saw him rack up a total of 184 points. With just two assists to his name prior to Gameweek 11 it was clear that injury and fatigue, from a summer helping Spain win Euro 2012, were in danger of scuppering his third season in the English top flight. Two substitute cameos in his first four matches and only 90 minutes on three occasions so far this season have prompted managers to discard him in their droves and has seen his price plummet from 10.0 to just 9.3 in the FPL game. In the Sky Sports game, where no such price market exists, he is still the top priced midfielder at 9.0.

Until Sunday’s return, he had become something of a forgotten man for Fantasy managers, owned by only 4.6% of managers in the FPL game and 6.59% in the Sky game. It is a situation that is set to change over the coming weeks, however, as Silva seems certain for starts and is clearly re-energised from his short lay-off.

Silva also looks to be a key player among the ranks of premium priced midfielders for Gameweek 12, in which Man City host Aston Villa. In comparison to his Spanish countrymen Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla, he has not been selected to endure the international side’s gruelling 28-hour round trip for an away friendly with Panama and is primed to delight those managers who have recruited him this week.

Following the Aston Villa game though fixtures are not ideal for Man City (che, wig, EVE, MAN, new), but as arguably the key player in a team vying to retain the Premier League title, tricky opponents should not cause too much concern for Silva. His return is not only ideal for City, it also affords the opportunity to shake up our five-man midfields with a bona fide top Fantasy performer for those looking for an alternative to the likes of Mata, Cazorla, Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard in the premium bracket.

      It's the City cover that's key though. I've just sold Tevez and so I'm now without any cover - Silva definitely being eyed up to come into my midfield. Handy template breaker too.

              Selling Tevez before the Villa game? For me City are way much better offensive team then Liv. Bad move. If I am selling Tevez I would consider another transfer instead

                Its frustrating to see 70 minute subs and get worried about teamsheets every week. Tevez out was always going to be a tough decision but money and Suarez being central to what liverpool do swung it for me.

            My front 3 is now Ba, Rvp and Saurez.

            Mf... Bale, Felliani, Michu (yes keeping faith), Nolan, sterling.

        If/when I sell Tevez, I'll sure feel better having Silva. Let's hope we get the Silva from the first half of last season and not the one from the second half of the season who struggled to return points with the same consistency

      Had toyed with all four as a sort of inverse template but can't make the money work without serious weakness at 5th mid or 2nd and 3rd striker (assuming RVP and Baines). Would rank them Mata, Silva, big gap, Bale, Cazorla.

      I love the way people always say 12-15 as if 10 would be borderline a failure 😀

      12-15 is the healthy amount accoring to most.

      And for Strikers it's 20-25 goals.

                  I c mate. Is Shorey nailed on though? Maybe it's just better to get Gorkss?

                  a) Foster to Mignolet looks good imo 🙂 As you can see from my history I took some hits too 🙁

                  b) Was thinking of ditching McAnuff for a 4.2 mil bench fodder after GW 14, is that a good plan?

    The more I see these watch-lists and scout reports (and look at my last three game-weeks) the more I realise my team has quickly turned into garbage.
    So many under-performing over valued players:
    Bale, Cazorla, Cech, Pienaar and eh Crouch.
    Plus I am starting to think: at the back of my mind, did I really get Crouch because he went with my user-name?
    And Coloccini will be back in time just for a more difficult run of fixtures.

    Just to say I missed your reply Mark but two thumbs up from me!

    "It’s true it’s useful to see the quality of the chance created and that could lead me to produce a “Chances Created In Box Stat” which will at least offer guidance on passes that lead to shots within the box. I could also create a “Big Chance Created” as Opta also handpick chances they feel should have been converted. Both would be most interesting from Cazorla and Bale’s perspective."

    Both sound like great indicators of assist potential. Hopefully there will be enough of them to draw distinctions between options.

    Evening all,
    have the following team & 2 FTs

    Begovic Schwarzer
    Demel Gorkss Baines Rafael Simpson
    Sterling Maloney Lallana Cazorla Bale
    RVP Tevez Pog

    My question is, do you reckon the short-term transfer plan below is sensible? (basically loading on DGWers and finally ditching out-of-favor Pogrebnyak)

    for GW12: Lallana -> McAnuff
    GW13 Simpson -> Cuellar; Pog – > Fletcher
    GW14: Schwarzer -> Mignolet
    (leaves 0.2 to bank with current prices)

    Sorry for longish post. Would appreciate any thoughts 🙂

        Yep. Well plan is to make a double transfer, Migs & Cuellar -> Foster & WBA def for GW17 (WBA has great fixtures then). And Fletcher can come good in GWs 17 and 18, when SUN plays against shaky UTD and SOT defenses.

      This DGW is a trap, as both DGW teams have rough fixtures the next week, and you will regret having some of them. Mignolet is not a bad lng-term punt, nor is McAnuff if you want a cheapie. But using a lot of transfers to accumulate a lot in this case wastes transfers that could be used to jump on hot players.
