The Watchlist – David Silva

Following a three-match absence through injury, David Silva arrived back in the nick of time for Manchester City’s Gameweek 11 home clash with Spurs last weekend, giving his team a much needed fillip and Fantasy managers a reminder of his sublime talent.

As the game looked to be stuttering to a 1-1 draw it took an 87th minute spark of genius from Silva to win the match, as he brilliantly exchanged passes with substitute Edin Dzeko and his final, killer ball to the Bosnian was duly slammed home. In addition to the assist, Silva also received two Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for his efforts in turning the game around and accrued a modest but significant seven-point total to herald a welcome top-flight return.

Since his opening day penalty miss at home to Southampton and subsequent 71st minute substitution Silva has struggled to recapture the stunning 2011/12 form that saw him rack up a total of 184 points. With just two assists to his name prior to Gameweek 11 it was clear that injury and fatigue, from a summer helping Spain win Euro 2012, were in danger of scuppering his third season in the English top flight. Two substitute cameos in his first four matches and only 90 minutes on three occasions so far this season have prompted managers to discard him in their droves and has seen his price plummet from 10.0 to just 9.3 in the FPL game. In the Sky Sports game, where no such price market exists, he is still the top priced midfielder at 9.0.

Until Sunday’s return, he had become something of a forgotten man for Fantasy managers, owned by only 4.6% of managers in the FPL game and 6.59% in the Sky game. It is a situation that is set to change over the coming weeks, however, as Silva seems certain for starts and is clearly re-energised from his short lay-off.

Silva also looks to be a key player among the ranks of premium priced midfielders for Gameweek 12, in which Man City host Aston Villa. In comparison to his Spanish countrymen Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla, he has not been selected to endure the international side’s gruelling 28-hour round trip for an away friendly with Panama and is primed to delight those managers who have recruited him this week.

Following the Aston Villa game though fixtures are not ideal for Man City (che, wig, EVE, MAN, new), but as arguably the key player in a team vying to retain the Premier League title, tricky opponents should not cause too much concern for Silva. His return is not only ideal for City, it also affords the opportunity to shake up our five-man midfields with a bona fide top Fantasy performer for those looking for an alternative to the likes of Mata, Cazorla, Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard in the premium bracket.

        Pog>Berbs is what I want to do... problem is i've had Hazard since GW1 and Michu since GW2 so I lose out a lot of ££ if I want to sell either Hazard or Michu, and then bring them back in at a later date.

          Cash doesn't really matter. Points do. If you really feel Haz & Michu are essential to your team then keep them them. If you feel Mata is better value than Haz then cash in ect.

          One thing I have learnt is that team value isn't everything.

        I have 2.2mill in the bank, so can go to Ruiz.

        Thing is, will he actually start, is he technically an out and out striker and has he just been lucky the last couple of GW's to score so high ? Has anyone actually gone for him? Don't dislike the idea, but it seems a huge risk.

    Repost -

    Current team -

    Begovic, Jaask
    Ivan, Baines, Demel, Nelson, Ben Davies
    Mata, Cazorla, Walters, Pienaar, Sterling
    RVP, Tevez, Lambert
    2 Frees, 1m in bank

    How does this sound –
    Lambert -> Giroud
    Cazorla -> Silva/Valencia
    Walters -> Maloney (assuming hes fit)
    For a 4 point hit. Note – Maloney would be benched this week anyway.

    then next week -

    Tevez -> Fletcher
    Pienaar -> Silva/Valencia

    sound good? Would leave me with a nicely balanced team i feel….

    Brought in Silva for Bale this week to give me a Spanish midfield triumvirate of Mata, Cazorla, and Silva. I'd be lying if I didn't admit that part of the reason I chose to get rid of Bale instead of Cazorla was just the fun Spanish connection. But also his consistent two-pointers were hard to justify with that price tag. As long as Bale doesn't explode again now that I got rid of him...

      Tempted to do the same (maybe next week). Bale has frustrated the hell out of me so far. Had him at the start (did nothing), sold him (exploded) then bought him back (gone off again). I think Spurs without Modric just aren't as good. 1 more week, thats all he gets.

    Right, so I've been asked by my GF (formerly known as rival) to do some damage control on her team, so she can catch up in her other H2H.

    What I'm looking at is 1FT, 1WC and a team value of 99.4 (unknown/lower selling price).

    WC no-brainer? 0.6 in the bank.
    I think I'll pull the trigger on Saturday, and just do Defoe -> Berba this week.

      Huth, Jenkinson, Hazard, Defoe, Torres - all big no no's.

      Shawcross, Cameron, Mata, Berbatov, Suarez and use leftover cash to get a better player than Noble.

      Fellaini at 7.5 is so cheap at that price he's also impossible to ignore I think. Se if you can make room for him

    Any thoughts on a Giroud transfer?

    He’s getting a lot of chances and 30pts in his last 5 games is pretty good.

    I havent seen enough Arsenal games to know anything about his overall game tho, what say Arsenal fans?

      Waiting to explode, just needs the service he likes - crosses for headers and lunging finishes. Walcott delivered that last week and so long he starts I'd say giroud will prosper. Cazorla and giroud may finally be starting to click but he so far hasn't finished off many through balls like we thought he would. Strong, technically good, intelligent movement, just needs to keep honing his efficiency.

        Wow, cheers Isacki.
        Thats everything I wanted to hear really - and kinda what I was thinking but that was only from 4/5 MOTD highlights tbh.
        The crosses think is interesting, I cant remember the last time Arsenal had a striker that could head the ball. Giroud could really offer something different and these fixtures make him look a decent gamble for the nxt 10 wks.

          there's no guarantees of course, this fragile arsenal team are still unpredictable. But I'd say he stands up in comparison to his price rival Ba and that's enough for me.

            Precisely what I'm looking at. And the differential factor is sweet

            Man, if Ba was in that Arsenal team he'd do damage - 5 times as many chances he'd have!!!

        I'm a little bitter though. Brought him in for Norwich, QPR and he got me nothing. Now he has Walcott firing in crosses, like Isacki says, he could be primed for points. I'm just a little cautious now I've been burned by him. The potential is definitely there.

        (Still not convinced by his feet though)

          Bummer man, I had similar experiences with Fellaini and Morisson who I took out when they were injured - instead of benching them!
          His first touch looks pretty decent when I've seen him but one can only assume he's used to way more time on the ball in the French league.
          I reckon I need a differential in my team and he'll be it....

      I'm strongly considering as an option too only in a few weeks probably Tevez > Giroud unfortunately Cazorla hasn't produced for me when I'd expect him too so I may want to have Giroud as a captain choice GW14/15.

        Tevez, Ba, Suarez in 40, 30 and 20% of teams already.

    As per previous post my team is as below. I have 2 FTs and 0 money. I could downgrade Baines to a 4.0 defender. Then could do Suarez in for Tevez & Walcott in for Lallana? Would that improve it?

    Begovic (Mccarthy)

    Baines Evans Nelsen (Clyne & Cuellar)

    Sterling Mata Bale Fellaini (Lallana)

    Tevez RVP Berbatov

    Ok thanks for the advice above.

    If I didnt't do Pog>Ruiz I can do the following:

    Pog>Berb
    Olsson>Nelsen/Clyne/Clark

    Thoughts, and if so, which defender?

      We can't play pretty, fashionable football, so we may as well go back to the good old fashioned route 1! It works.

      Ox over Zaha at least...

      Zaha's only proven himself in the Championship, needs at least one season in the Prem before getting anywhere near the Starting XI or even the bench IMO.

      The back four is distinctly average, I think the next generation need to be integrated in time for a decent go at the 2014 WC, i.e. Walker Jones Smalling Gibbs. Rodwell in for Gerrard.

      He is exactly the type of player England needs. Loves to run past players and make something happen. Get him in the team as early as possible i say, it seems to work well for Spain/Germany.

      There's a split decision here. I'd do it. Silva is central to everything that City do and they have obviously been missing him. He'll get game time and is a proven consistent scorer.

      Santi is the same for Arse, but City are simply better.
