Watchlist

The Watchlist – Antonio Valencia

Few men would envy the task of filling Cristiano Ronaldo’s golden slippers. When the Portuguese prima donna eloped from Manchester to Madrid in the summer of 2009, a club accustomed to stepping out with the Premier League’s prom queen could be forgiven for not immediately embracing the wholesome qualities of his replacement..

Doggedly supplying that deficit of glamour with industry and unselfishness since his arrival, Antonio Valencia has forged virtue of necessity and wrought himself a hard-won place in the hearts of the fans. If the Stretford End still secretly dreams of step-overs past, it wakes gladly divorced from the illusion that the value of a final ball depends on any preceding pirouettes.

Investment in the United midfield has been pregnant with rotational pitfalls since Ronaldo’s departure, but with Nani out of favour and new acquisition Shinji Kagawa deployed centrally or wide left, Valencia is currently relieved of credible understudies for his blooming duet with Rafael on the right. With four assists to his credit already in an injury-interrupted start and only a baffling, if hilarious, miskick robbing him of a tap-in against Arsenal two weeks ago, a big haul may be just around the corner for the former Wigan man as the goals flow and fixtures ease for the Reds.

Averaging a gnat’s whisker under three strikes a game since their opening day defeat at Everton, a run comprising (nor, QPR, WHM, rdg) in the next four Gameweeks seems likely to further augment that impressive average. Still smarting from last season’s goal-difference title defeat at the hands of their noisy neighbours, Ferguson has publicly set the pass mark at 100 notches on the goal post this time out and, with four goals and 14 assists last year, Valencia certainly has the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) pedigree to profit from a more ruthless offensive philosophy.

With the likes of Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard and Santi Cazorla somewhat treading water at the pricy end of the midfield spectrum, Fantasy managers may feel more at liberty to chance their arm on less celebrated candidates. Whilst out-and-out wingers have taken something of a back seat to “in the hole” midfield picks thus far, few wide men have access to the quality of the targets Valencia enjoys. Currently priced at 8.6 in FPL (7.9 in the Sky Sports game), the Ecuadorian dynamo looks primed to buck the trend and deliver strong value from out wide as United look to go forth and conquer over the coming weeks.

Anyway, considering Valencia though it's hard to get him in any given gameweek. The question is, can he score goals?

Exactly the same thoughts here, it's tough for genuine wingers to score from the angle. When they do score, it's spectacular, but we don't get points for style.

Ramsey is out but Ox is fit for Spurs (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/arsenal/9677116/Arsenal-expect-to-have-Theo-Walcott-Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain-and-Wojciech-Szczesny-fit-to-face-Tottenham.html) while Walcott looks favoured to recover in time. I'd say after his impact he's very difficult to drop for this match but it's anyone's guess thereafter.

If you're already bored of internationals like me, you could keep yourself occupied with a somewhat insensitive though gripping game. Injury roulette. Predict who has to leave the field at any time in this week's internationals. 5 points for a correct guess, -1 for a wrong one.

Gorkss is no Rafael. He's a regular defender with a bit of attacking upside. The only points you can bank on from that type of defender are clean sheets. Play him when CS are likely (i.e. not against Everton) If goals happen to come along at the same time then its a bonus.

I think it's a valid tactic to take early hits for team value to spend later on. I'm doing it too, though not to the extent that you're doing. You're doing well considering, and better than I am so far.

But there's a perception that you're constantly looking for praise for your glorious team. Try not to keep rubbing people's noses in a team they can't have 🙂 You could have asked your bench question with just words.

    Jaas (Bego)
Rafael - Baines - McCartney (Hangeland - Wilson)
    Fellaini - Michu - Cazorla - Bale - Mata
    Ba - Berba (Lambert)

    1.5 in the bank.

Brought taarabt in this week as a cheap differential.

Good move? Points seem due but sometimes that counts for nothing.

More consistent but I'd say taarabt could get a big haul so long as keepers stop pulling wonder saves against him.

Is it madness to bench Hazard for Sterling this GW? Front 7 as it stands will be

        Sterling/Nolan/Fellaini/Mata

        RVP/Ba/Berbatov

I reckon so. Sterling is playing for England tonight, he might only get 60 mins against Wigan. Plus, I hate having value on my bench. If I were you I'd take Haz out and put another mid in; Walcott, Silva, etc.

thoughts on this for an 8 point hit?????

        Ivanovic / Barfa / Fletcher - OUT
        Rafael / Sterling / Suarez - IN

would give me a front 7 of:
        Sterling / Hazard / Fellaini / Cazorla
Berbatov / Suarez / Van Persie

Looking to change Cazorla to Silva and Hazard to Mata in the next couple of weeks too.

So, if Wenger rolls out the 3-5-2, how do we think they'd line up? If like the below, then Sagna and Walcott could be absolute steals.

        ------------------------Szczesny
        --------Koscielny Mertesacker Vermaelen
        Sagna----------------------------------------------Gibbs
        -------------------Wilshere---Arteta
        ---------------------------Cazorla
        ---------------Giroud--------------Walcott/Pod

Looks right but I don't like it. Wilshire and Arteta aren't likely to cover the wings defensively when Sagna and Gibbs get forward and that'll cause them problems, especially against the likes of Bale this w/end.

Same here. The reason we've been leaky at the back this year is:

            a) We haven't replaced Song who used to act as a first line of defence in front of the CBs, and
            b) Verm, Mert and Kos keep making shocking individual errors.

In my opinion, our best 11 with what we've got is:

            ----------------------Szczesny
            Sagna---Koscielny Vermaelen---Gibbs
            ----------------Wilshere-----Arteta
            ------------------------Cazorla
            ----------Walcott--------------------Podolski
            ----------------------------Giroud

Agreed. The truth is our defending in open play has been OK. Our set piece defending has been unbelievably crap.

Realistically I'd take the above, personally I would like a 4-2-2-2 not unlike City last year.

              ----------------Szczesny
              Sagna------Kos-----Verm-----Gibbs
              ------------Wilshere----Arteta
              ---------Cazorla-------------Podolski
              -------------Walcott---Giroud

Yeah, that's decent too. Be interesting to see how Walcott gets on playing as a CF. Podolski would get moods if the above got played out though... 🙂

Yeah, the problem IMO is that Walcott, Podolski and Giroud are all natural center forwards and the first two have been forced for various reasons to play out of position for long stretches. The 4-2-3-1 above is a decent compromise with them drifting centrally, but still very much a compromise and we've seen it misfire so far.

I'm on a wildcard and considering Walcott as a bit of a punt. I never thought I'd be considering getting him in again but here I am. Would it be madness?

Suggested a 4-2-2-2 to get two strikers as well a few weeks ago. But three at the back is totally out of Wenger's world. And I wouldn't like it myself. Because the wingbacks' positioning is so important, it tends to either restrict you going forward or leave big gaps at the back.

Here's one that Stilicho will love:

Agree, should perhaps wait one more week, keep him even if he doesn't start this week. Rotation might be over next GW. And Pienaar COULD also do something this GW with nice fixtures...

Guess I'll save the FT and play current front line:

            Fellaini-Pienaar-Walcott-Mata (Kacaniklic)
            RVP-Ba-Aguero
