Watchlist

The Watchlist – Antonio Valencia

Few men would envy the task of filling Cristiano Ronaldo’s golden slippers. When the Portuguese prima donna eloped from Manchester to Madrid in the summer of 2009, a club accustomed to stepping out with the Premier League’s prom queen could be forgiven for not immediately embracing the wholesome qualities of his replacement..

Doggedly supplying that deficit of glamour with industry and unselfishness since his arrival, Antonio Valencia has forged virtue of necessity and wrought himself a hard-won place in the hearts of the fans. If the Stretford End still secretly dreams of step-overs past, it wakes gladly divorced from the illusion that the value of a final ball depends on any preceding pirouettes.

Investment in the United midfield has been pregnant with rotational pitfalls since Ronaldo’s departure, but with Nani out of favour and new acquisition Shinji Kagawa deployed centrally or wide left, Valencia is currently relieved of credible understudies for his blooming duet with Rafael on the right. With four assists to his credit already in an injury-interrupted start and only a baffling, if hilarious, miskick robbing him of a tap-in against Arsenal two weeks ago, a big haul may be just around the corner for the former Wigan man as the goals flow and fixtures ease for the Reds.

Averaging a gnat’s whisker under three strikes a game since their opening day defeat at Everton, a run comprising (nor, QPR, WHM, rdg) in the next four Gameweeks seems likely to further augment that impressive average. Still smarting from last season’s goal-difference title defeat at the hands of their noisy neighbours, Ferguson has publicly set the pass mark at 100 notches on the goal post this time out and, with four goals and 14 assists last year, Valencia certainly has the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) pedigree to profit from a more ruthless offensive philosophy.

With the likes of Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard and Santi Cazorla somewhat treading water at the pricy end of the midfield spectrum, Fantasy managers may feel more at liberty to chance their arm on less celebrated candidates. Whilst out-and-out wingers have taken something of a back seat to “in the hole” midfield picks thus far, few wide men have access to the quality of the targets Valencia enjoys. Currently priced at 8.6 in FPL (7.9 in the Sky Sports game), the Ecuadorian dynamo looks primed to buck the trend and deliver strong value from out wide as United look to go forth and conquer over the coming weeks.

Just returning to the previous article which discusses doubt in Demel starting:

"With George McCartney picking up a knock at St James’ Park last Sunday, Demel was afforded a chance as a sub, with O’Brien shifting over to left-back; if McCartney and Collins fail to make Monday’s clash with Stoke, Demel – priced at 4.1 in FPL – could well be set to return to the first-team."

Having started the first seven I assume he is still nailed on when fit right? Is this discussion just about the timing, that is, whether other injuries will force him to start?

He's doing the business. We can never accuse him of not knowing how to get results. Even respect him in a kind of horrified Pulis-like way.

It's reassuring in a way that even in this incredibly technical day and age, defensive drills and long ball tactics can get you points against the biggest of big guns.

On the basis of their respective home/away form, you'd have to say ship Cazorla, just based on this week. But then Arsenal have good fixtures coming up. If you're bringing Walcott in, you've probably got to shift Cazorla, if it's Silva or Valencia.... toss a coin!

Good analysis - as I've already made one transfer this week I'm going to restrict a hit to 4 points and will probably go for Valencia based on fixtures - though as you say Walcott is tempting. Funny enough I'm going to Arsenal v Spurs game this weekend! Silva was my game strategy on GW9 but he got injured so I had to radically revise my plans - worked to some extent but not brilliantly.

If Valenicia is going to produce GOALS surely it will be over the next 4GW's. Just ran a comparision between he and Cazorla over the last 4 matches played with respect to Goal Threat!

Valencia has more penalty area touches 17-12
Valencia has more attempts in box 5-4
Cazorla has more attempts outside the box 6-1

He will definatley get some assist over this period (like he always does). The question is will he score goals. Based on the above, i think he is due.

However, comparing Valencia attacking promise vs Bale/Nolan/Felaini/Mata/Michu he is by far the INFERIOR choice.

I think without including shots inside the box and penalty box touches - two key indicators of probaility of goals - your table is somewhat lacking in its ability to predict future returns.

Yes include that as well but you want to include all shots from within the area IMO not just those closest to the goal.

The only predictor of future returns is past results. Take what you will from the above, however, if you are thinking about bringing Valencia for additional united attacking cover, during a nice run of fixtures, Valencia is a viable option. If you have Cazorla in your squad, I think it would be a viable transfer.

He is a traditional winger who hugs touchline and provides crosses. So, he should only provide crosses from far. That's why he is not a fantasy asset imo. Especially when you can get better players for that much money.

Worth doing Santi -> Silva, Walcott or Mata with my freebie this week? If so, which one?

    Baines, Hughes, McCartney
    Bale, Santi, Fellaini, Taarabt
    RVP, Ba, Berba

    Federici, Michu, Cuellar, Clyne

Any concerns of Santi and/or Mata getting rested at the w/e after the Panama international and crucial midweek CL games next week? I feel Silva is the most nailed on of the 3 this week.

            Begovic

            Walcott Michu Mata Fellaini

Saving the transfer .. you're up against:

              Jaask

              Baines, Huth, S Taylor

              Arfa, Cazorla, Sterling, Fellaini, Bale

              Ba, RVP

I'd say you're stronger but maybe that's just mind games?

I am about to bring Walcott. But I cant be sure he ll start from now on. Gervinho is to come back next week and even for the game vs Totenham there are articles that show first XI with Walcott benched. I guess I ll have to wait until Sat morning to check latest news but I really cant understand why on earth he can be benched after so many lost points for Arsenal. Perhaps any Arsenal fans may know more about that??

Still registering a healthy amount of shots. A bit shoot on site, but that is Bale for you. Only slight worry is Spurs are a bit less attacking inclined this year and registering less shots iirc.

He will be grand i'm sure though.

Ade did fairly well against Arsenal last year, I think it was an assist in the 2-1 win and a goal and assist in the 5-2 defeat.

Surely too much of a punt for me to get him in this week?

There have been a few left-field suggestions for alterations for the FPL game of late so here's mine. How about earning interest on your bank funds? Say, 5% per gameweek. (i.e. if you have £2.0m in the bank you earn 0.1 per week)

Would increase the benefit of finding the bargain players early on to earn funds for the big hitters later.

Cheers partner. A nice little consolation for dropping out of the PP cup. You are having a shocker, aren't you? Doesn't look like your fault at all, just a run of poor luck. Your rank is still sweet though.

I like the game a lot but I don't think it's perfect by any means. The way the points system makes over half of the midfielders valueless is annoying for a start.

I know what you mean but the simplicity is what makes it the most appealing game.. I think if they just changed the bonus system and weighted tackles / clearances quite high it would even it out...

No, I agree that the simplicity is good. And I wouldn't want to see a different midfield classification as suggested in the scoutcast. Adjusting the bonus weights would sort that out.

      Using this idea.
1st game week team for example would be
      Two 4.0 GK
      Five 4.0 Def
      Five 5 Mid
      Two 5 Fwd
      Totalling 603m

      Leaving 37m left over.
Now using your current interest rate of 5%
By gameweek 21 January transfer window.
The banked money would total at approx 103

      GW/Bank/Interest/Total Bank
      1 37 2 39
      2 39 2 41
      3 41 2 43
      4 43 2 45
      5 45 2 47
      6 47 2 50
      7 50 2 52
      8 52 3 55
      9 55 3 57
      10 57 3 60
      11 60 3 63
      12 63 3 66
      13 66 3 70
      14 70 3 73
      15 73 4 77
      16 77 4 81
      17 81 4 85
      18 85 4 89
      19 89 4 93

You would also need a third striker in this theoretical scenario.

        You need a third striker. The cheapest you could get would've been;
        2 x 4.0 GK
        5 x 4.0 DEF
        5 x 4.5 MID
        3 x 4.5 FWD

totalling 64m. Therefore you would get about 100m extra. I'd happily take that and run 😀

It would be cool to try pick the cheapest team that will play on GW1 and 2. Pocket all the interest and use your wildcard for GW3. You would be able to put a much better team together.

    Foster

    Hangeland Baines demel

    Mata bale fellaini taarabt

    Rvp Suarez berbatov

    Green Cameron gorkss Maloney

I'm happy with my team but feel like I need city coverage.

How would you go about doing this with my team?

I'm considering mata to silva but then I'd have the same issue with no Chelsea players... Ahhh

Also 0.1 in the bank and may need to change out foster. I'm thinking mingolet... Yay or nay?

Anyone have any thoughts on this QPR side?

I got Hoilett in two weeks ago for the nice run of fixures, rotates well with Maloney. He is a Nolan type of player, not many KP's or creativity, but he shoots. Got a very decent return last year as a forward, is now classified as a midfielder. Is registering a nice amount of shots, bit of a live wire and has had two very decent chances in the last two.

Taarabt and Granero also look interesting options...if Hughes can get this side to click.

Tbh, I really can't put my finger on the problem, although I don't watch them enough. Team is full of class and should be scoring for fun, but there worse then my team (Liverpool) going forward.

Clearly something is awry. I'll most likely move Hoilett on for Ramirez or Lallana, but I really do like him and his stats..

I've just put taarabt in. He's getting games and shooting on sight. He has to score sooner or later.

Agree on Maloney too, great value.

I have Taarabt but this is his last chance. I have seen QPR twice this year and although the player's level is not bad, they are not playing as a team. no combinations, no system imo. I would rather have Maloney or Lallana.

"Investment in the United midfield has been pregnant with rotational pitfalls since Ronaldo’s departure..."

Love it. Having studied literature I'm loving the Imagery in Stilicho's posts.

Anyone that can put "pregnant" and "Ronaldo" in the same sentence deserves praise.

If Valencia was priced at 7.5 I may have taken the plunge, but currently I think his price tag is high enough for me to shy away. Having said that.. big fan of Valencia. Felt bad for Wigan when they lost both TonyV and N'Zog.

I have to say that 'attacking mid' idea is horrible, their positions are not set in stone off the striker in the first place

and the day I'm having to mull over who will make the most tackles in a game between likes of Tiote or Cattermole is the day I quit

Reinventing the wheel springs to mind

          agree

if you have a poor week goalscorer wise you're punished twice with the influx of bonus points that follow

not only are you awarded for the goal you're more than likely to 2 or 3 more a few days later

it's stupid. Decide/respond to the man of the match and award them alone (whatever their role in the win)

With 3 injury prone defenders (Agger, Enrique, Johnson) I think Wisdom is guaranteed game time.
As for Brad Jones I don't think Rodgers is the type of manager that will drop him as soon as he makes a blunder. Got game time 'til xmas at least I reckon. Both great budget options in a team hitting fixtures and form. Maybe I should have asked and/or.

    Begovic (mannone)
    baines rafael demel (cueller davies)
    nasri michu pienaar cazorla (morrison)
    rvp ba berba

Have 1ft and 0,7m in the bank. Confused as to what to do with my midfield.
    A: nasri + pienaar >> fellaini + sterling/maloney
    B: cazorla + ba >>> mata + grioud
C: cazorla + ba >>> fellaini + grioud (will end up with both pienaar and fellaini though)
D: davies >> gorkss as i dont have a good 3rd defender this week

I am leaving towards B but newcastle have good fixtures so not sure about taking out ba.
is fellaini really a must have…the price diff between him and pienaar is 0.9m and fellaini is on 4yellows
    Any opinions welcome.

    My team is:

    Jääskeläinen, (Begovic)
    Rafael, Bertrand, Baines, (Figueroa, Ridgewell)
    Cazorla, Yaya, Bale, McAnuff, (Sterling)
    Suarez, Jelavic, Berbatov

2,4m in bank. One free transfer available (thinking about saving it for next week)

Having really big headache deciding who to captain this week. Suarez, berbatov, bale or cazorla? Been thinking Jelavic also which would give me great differencial "bonus" against my rivals (if he would score couple).

    Any suggestions?
