The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Sunday

Brede Hangeland’s dismissal hands Sunderland the chance to register their first away win of the season. Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson both play a part in two of the Black Cats’ three goals, while Dimitar Berbatov draws a rare blank as Fulham lose for the first time with the Bulgarian in their starting XI:

On the Up

Steven Fletcher
Without a strike since Gameweek 5, the Scot returned to form with a goal and assist as Sunderland made full use of their extra-man advantage following Brede Hangeland’s first-half dismissal. With four home fixtures in the next four, including double Gameweek 16, Fletcher chose the perfect time to serve a reminder of his capabilities.

Adam Johnson
The winger added to last week’s goal at Everton by providing a pair of assists as the Black Cats scored more than a single goal for only the second time this season. Johnson had previously failed to produce any attacking returns prior to Gameweek 11 but is starting to suggest he may be finally settling at the Stadium of Light.

Carlos Cuellar
Providing he’s injury-free, the Spaniard seems nailed-on at the heart of the Sunderland defence and found the net for the first time since moving to Wearside. His cut-price valuation means Cuellar is another likely candidate for his side’s upcoming fixtures, bearing in mind O’Neill’s side have conceded just three goals in four home games so far.

Stephane Sessegnon
For many a month he’s flattered to deceive but the Benin international fired home a superb effort to score for the first time since March. If Sessegnon can return to the form that produced seven goals and 12 assists last term, he could be another differential to consider over the next few.

Going Down

Brede Hangeland
Dismissed for a two-footed challenge on Lee Cattermole, the Cottagers centre-half now faces a three-match ban. Hangeland’s absence should afford Philippe Senderos a chance alongside Aaron Hughes ahead of trips to Stoke and Chelsea and a home clash against Spurs.

James McClean
A nailed-on starter under Martin O’Neill last term, the winger was omitted from the starting line-up for today’s showdown. The return of Lee Cattermole saw Seb Larsson move to the right and Adam Johnson shift over to the left as McClean dropped out for the second time in three Gameweeks.

Dimitar Berbatov
The Bulgarian was snapped up by over 230,000 FPL managers heading into today’s game after producing returns in five of his first six starts for the Cottagers. With injuries and dismissals disrupting the hosts’ rhythm, Berbatov returned a rare blank but was nevertheless full of creativity and attacking threat for Jol’s side.

Fulham Defence
There’s no denying Hangeland’s sending off played a part in today’s result but Jol’s defence continue to leak goals at an alarming rate. Fulham have now conceded three goals in all but one of their last four matches and have shipped 22 this term – only QPR and Southampton have conceded more.

** Just a heads-up to let you know that the Big Numbers article, which usually follows Sunday evening’s Stock Check, should now be published tomorrow. Mark has been laid low by a bug and is having a rare night off.

      I don't know about that specifically, but I would expect some returns in the next 4 GWs, in a side which is fairly tight;

      WBA (H)
      QPR (H)
      NOR (A)
      CHE (H), REA (H)

I don't see it, WBA have scored every game bar one (which was way back in GW3 or 4) and they are a side on form. Although Sunderland have QPR nor DGW after that.

I agree completely. Forgot to put the bet on, but he was my tip for first manager sacked in the PL this season. The easy run of fixtures early on has helped him massively. The CL run last season was one of the flukiest cup runs I think I've ever seen.

Cazorla's returns this week were a little flattering and his creativity and goal threat has dipped over the last few games. I heard someone mention that he has played deeper over the last 3 GWs (which is true but he's not been playing that much deeper according to the average position grapic). Anyone know why and if this has really been the reason?

It's looking like Cazorla & Tevez > Silva & Giroud would be a viable option for the straight swap if you have 2 FTs but it looks like a bit of a sideways move as although Silva will arguably outscore Caz, Tevez matches Giroud's goal threat and is a lot more creative. You'd also be worried about Giroud's ability to consistently perform given that it's his first season in the league. I think I'd prefer Ba or Suarez (who will probably offer similar value).

Better to just wait and monitor?

Yes. Cazorla is steadily returning points. And if I'm being honest, Silva and Tevez's performances slightly flattered them this weekend. More than Cazorla anyway.

Silva got two assists from two 'handballs'. Tevez got a complimentary penalty.

Silva is not superior for goal threat. Caz loves to shoot and score when he can. And he has the same creativity potential for assists because his through balls are so perfectly weighted.

Silva is scared of shooting. Trust me, they are worlds apart when it comes to goal threat. Just because Silva scored doesn't mean he's suddenly a goalscoring extraordinaire now.

And Cazorla scored an equalising goal at the Bernabeu last year...he knows a thing or two about scoring late goals. Just because the game was 'over' makes no difference. He tries his best always.

Goals = more points, more baps, more fun. I do think it matters because they are roughly the same price. And if Cazorla didn't have this element to his game I'd feel like Silva would win because of his record. But Cazorla is having a massively impressive start to the season.

Watching that game it looked like Walcott is where the points will be instead of Cazorla. It's a swap I've considered and after 20/30 mins of that game Cazorla was looking frustrating typified by Walcott taking corners (something that was a previous plus for Cazorla). Cazorla obviously got amongst the points when the game opened up.

In summary I have Cazorla and will hold on for now, but if i didn't have either I would definitely bring in Walcott, it's just whether there are more pressing transfers to be made otherwise perhaps the trade could be made. Cazorla will still chip in.

I don't think I'd bring either in if I had neither and I won't be doing Cazorla > Walcott any time soon. Walcott may well become the better option there but there's always a worry he won't get consistent playing time. His recent lack of game-time was down to illness rather than contract disputes (so I read) so there's every chance he'll get a run in the team.

I've been looking at ways to do that but I'm happy with most of my team and it will require a lot of moves to free up the funds to upgrade him. He's got 2 home games coming up but seems to get rotated in and out of the team a lot. I'm going to stick for now and possibly downgrade Baines to free up the funds the week after next.

Fair enough, but don't come out with things like "Ba is offering way better value than Suarez". It's simply not true. Plus, since GW5 when you bought Ba, Suarez has scored 66 points to Ba's 44. Suarez has been and is proving to be better value. Wrong I'm afraid. You could perhaps do with an upgrade in midfield or defense IMO with 4 cheap defenders and having both Pie and Fellaini. What about upgrading Pie long-term? I'd hold onto your transfer this week I think. Ba > Suarez is a luxury move and isn't necessary this week I don't think.

    Bottom of last page:

What do you think about such team:

    Begovic / McCarthy
    Cuellar / Cameron / Rafael / Gorkss / McCartney
    Mata / Cazorla / Bale / Fellaini / Obertan
RVP / Berbatov (Aguero) / Suarez

Thinking of buying Aguero for Berba this GW, but maybe Tevez will be enough and upgrade MID/DEF instead? If I go with Tevez I can afford Fellaini -> Silva (but need to downgrade Cameron to Davies).

Ba's a better prospect I think, Giroud's stealing the limelight too now, and Ba's less popular now. Your point on Ba's hand in the attacking returns is also noted. Sorted. Thanks. Like it when you talk sense. 😛

Disagree. He could easily have been amongst the points there, having gone close with a couple of shots and Ba's goal was originally a header against the bar from HBA's cross.

Yes his return isn't good enough but he is under £8m so can't quite compare him with Bale/Mata/Cazorla/Walcott.

Newcastle are underperforming and as a result so is HBA, but I see positive returns for HBA over the next couple of matches, even if he proves to be better in real footballing terms than compared to fpl.

In the Knee-Jerky world, I can understand people selling, but not most overrated.

Agree that he's a great player in real life but in FPL he's a questionable player to own. If you think he'll offer more FPL points then good luck to you! I personally don't think and have never thought he will.

"you need to look at shipping Ivanovic (no longer nailed on)"...rubbish

As a rookie to the game after some experienced advice

I got michu early and he is now worth 6.9 to me but would be 7.3 to buy back.
Can I ever ship him or is he a forced season keeper??? What does the experienced player do?

Id keep him. He is very cheap for a mid that plays up front. Also ownership is high so its a risk not having him. He also gets a fair amount of bonus points

I'd sell him if there's someone else who presents themselves as a better option long-term but I wouldn't sell him for a short-term punt.

i'd be wanting to look at foster, kacaniclic and getting shot of one of my west ham defenders...otherwise your team is pretty good

It's only my third season and I joined the first one part-way through. But I read someone say that you build team value in the first half of the season and spend it in the second.

Of course if someone better comes along offering long term value then you have to take a decision. But I've had Michu from the start. He scored 16 goals in La Liga last season, which is more than many strikers. He scores as lot from set plays. I certainly wouldn't bin him on a short term punt or if fixtures turned sour.

For me, he's staying out until someone better at the price comes along and I don't expect that to happen soon.
