Watchlist

The Watchlist – Christian Benteke

Clearly, Christian Benteke has more over his main rival for the lone forward role at Aston Villa than three extra letters at the end of his surname. While Darren Bent was expected to lead the line for the midlanders this season, it’s been the 21-year-old summer signing who has been backed by manager Paul Lambert in recent weeks; relegating Bent, who is now injured, to just one start and three substitute appearances since Gameweek 5.

So why is this young Belgian international player so highly regarded by Lambert? His track record at Belgian side Genk, where he left to join Villa on a four-year deal, gives a good indication of his goal scoring ability. During the 2011-12 season, Benteke scored 19 times in 37 appearances. Two years earlier, while on loan at another Belgian club, KV Kortrijk, the then-teenager scored a similarly impressive 15 goals in 34 appearances.

His first appearance for Aston Villa, as a substitute during the west midlands side’s Gameweek 4 away clash with Swansea, also showed his potential, as Benteke lifted the ball over Michael Vorm and scored on the volley; a sublime piece of skill to herald one of the Premier League’s newest talents.

Only one more goal has followed in the Premier League, scored during Villa’s Gameweek 9 home game with Norwich, though he also notched up two Premier League assists – this means that, when on the pitch, Benteke has been involved in 50% of his side’s goals so far. In addition, the Belgian has also recorded two bonus points to take him to 31 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), where he is Villa’s second top points scorer, just two behind Matt Lowton.

Benteke has also impressed outside of the Premier League this term. Supplying an assist in Villa’s Capital One Cup third round win at City, he then struck twice in the last 16, as Lambert’s side saw off Swindon Town 3-2 last month. He has also scored four times in six appearances for his country over the last four months.

While many may question whether Benteke can cling on to a starting spot when Bent returns from injury (which is expected to be at the end of this month), Lambert’s ringing endorsement of the player’s recent display against United sums up just how highly he rates the Belgian. Having watched Benteke bully Chris Smalling before teeing up Andreas Weimann for the opener, the Villa boss went on to say:

“I think he’s not just a strong player, his technique is terrific and, for someone who is just 21, he can be anything he wants. Christian keeps going. He’s a brilliant guy as well. His character is terrific but my God, he’s a proper No.9. He did give the United centre-halves a run for their money”

Priced at 6.5 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game (where he has also scored 31 points), Benteke has a mere 0.4% and 0.2% ownership respectively. With a favourable fixture list over the next four weeks (ARS, REA, qpr, STO), he has the potential to offer real value as a short-term punt and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing differential option amongst our forward three slots before Villa’s fixtures (liv, che, TOT) stiffen from Gameweek 17 onwards.

that doesn't even follow, no use trying to confuse the issue.

It's on an individual basis. You talk to people, they judge your advice. If you really piss them off, they might ask you to stop giving advice. Then you leave them alone.

If other people like your advice, great! That's not a problem for us. It's only a problem if you're still interacting with us.

You seem to have confused it not being a popularity contest with the idea that the unpopular are the most correct.

Bottom of last article; got one response (thanks) but really hope for some more thoughts:

I know the DGW is weeks away, but what to do for it affects decisions now.

Is there any midfielder from Reading or Sunderland you would play over the stronger players in your front 7?

This is my front 7: Bale, Silva, Michu, Fellaini, RVP Suarez, Berb. Is there any point getting a fifth mid from REA/SUN if playing him means benching one of those? It’s looking to me like the DGW comes down to def and Fletch. Thoughts?

Yeah, he's a possible, but whom would I bench? If he looks to be getting some consistency in the next few weeks I might go for it. The clincher will be if Michu or Suarez gets the fifth yellow in GW15. Then AJ is in.

Posting on the wrong article! 🙄

Are we totally sold on Billy Jones? Ridgewell would seem to offer security but only a marginally superior attacking threat.

I wasn’t really following West Brom but he seems to have taken the RB spot back of Tamas. Was he injured when Tamas we playing?

The alternative is Wisdom but I don’t think it’s a punt worth taking.

Jones and Ridgewell were RB and LB when I watched the game at the hawthorns this week. I would say Ridgey's crossing threat was very apparent, always the outball and always slinging measured crosses in.

Cheer Isacki. I've compared them in the members area and I'm not quite sure a) I want to spend £5m on a WBA defender and b) if Ridgewell is actually worth £0.6m more for the security and assist potential.

The problem with Benteke and budget strikers in general is that they are too vulnerable to fluctuations in their small teams' attacking output. That means you need to keep them for the long run and spend your saved money wisely on points elsewhere.

I have Lambert and am well aware of the risks. 5 games without a goal I think, thank goodness I stayed patient and he finally gets an assist, then a goal, then who knows?

I think Ruiz was injured, petric was while scoring, kaca is, etc, they've ended up having to play Karagounis at cm. Basically, I do think the fixtures will affect them.

Why not Mig inn for Begovic? He rotates almost perfectly with Foster until January WC is activated, and you would play Mignolet for the next two gameweeks giving Foster time to recover from injury (as long as there is not anything I have missed regarding his injury).

I'm quite surprised by McClean's stats there.

Really, all their stats are poor compared to alternatives (Ba, Berbatov, Lambert, Michu, Nolan, Fellaini, Lallana, Sterling)

      Did I read that right?

I have Bardsley - was looking for greater attacking threat.

Cueller's threat really took me by surprise....it was a key reason I've had him all season but was beginning to think his threatening days were behind him. Looks like I was wrong and he is definitely the key Sunderland defender to get defence and attack wise.

Ah, for the love of... 😆

May have to look at getting cuellar back for the DGW alongside bardsley

Is bardsley just a modest attacking proposition?
