The Watchlist – Glen Johnson

Glen Johnson picked the perfect opportunity to propel himself onto Fantasy radars with a stunning strike in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over former club West Ham last Sunday afternoon. With Jose Enrique remaining doubtful for the Reds’ home clash against Villa this weekend, Johnson looks an enticing option as Brendan Rodgers’ in-form side prepare for a favourable run of upcoming fixtures over the festive period:

Mainly utilised as a left-back this season, Johnson only recently returned to his natural position on the opposite side of defence in Gameweek 13 and, as he becomes accustomed to his right-back role once again, has started to pick up the points. His goal and maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus haul against the Hammers followed on from an assist and a couple of bonus against Southampton in Gameweek 15, meaning Johnson has now returned double figures in each of his last two appearances. The fact that he had previously produced one assist all season is a clear indication of his recent improvement.

Lucas’ return to the Liverpool first-team seems also to have played a part in Johnson’s upturn in performance. With the Brazilian content to sit in front of the back-four and break up the opposition play, Rodgers is finally able to push on both his full-backs, with Johnson and Enrique lending weight to the Reds’ attacks from deep. With Enrique now preferred in defence again following a brief out of position stint in the front three, Johnson is perhaps edging ahead in our Fantasy thoughts after the Spaniard admitted earlier today he still has concerns over the hamstring injury that forced him off at Upton Park.

Looking at the next five fixtures, it’s difficult not to be swayed by Liverpool’s assets. At the back, in particular, they have been hugely consistent in recent games at Anfield – just a single goal conceded in the last five in front of their own fans. Investment in Rodgers’ defence looks a sound option, then, with Villa, Fulham and Sunderland all set to roll up to Merseyside between now and Gameweek 21 and, while a trip to Stoke is always tricky, the Reds also travel to QPR, offering further chance of points before their schedule takes a turn for the worse and the winter wildcard comes into play.

With just one defeat in their last 11, Liverpool are clearly starting to hit their stride under Rodgers and Johnson could prove crucial over the hectic next few matches. A price of 6.3 in FPL and 6.5 in the Sky Sports game may deter many, though an ownership of less than 3% in FPL underlines his case as a real in-form differential worth considering.

His performance level has dropped a fair bit in the last month or so...he badly needs a rest.

If I were Rodgers I'd bench him at the weekend and play a front 3 of Gerrard, Suarez and Cole, then have Lucas and Allen in midfield with Shelvey just ahead.

Although Sterling has been a key performer in Rodgers' first season at Anfield, the Northern Irishman accepts there will come a point when he will need to be rested for his own benefit.

Rodgers has no concerns about the physical demands on the player but accepts he may require a mental break.

"There will be at some point and we'll need to give him a breather, there's no question," said the Reds boss.

"He's a very young man and is still learning the game. He still has technical elements he needs to improve upon and tactical elements.

"But one of the biggest things is psychological at this level - real mental fatigue can set in."He's been terrific so far. He's got to this stage at the end of November and been absolutely brilliant, but at some point he will need that breather.

"He's been one of our leading players, but for the benefit of Raheem it'll be something I'll need to consider."

              Clueless comment really.

He's not complaining that he needs a rest, but the fact is that the human body can only perform to a certain level for so long without a break, especially at a young age when it's new to the demands of pro football at the top level.

It's been quite clear from the drop off in his recent performances that the kid needs a little rest if he is to perform at his peak.

He got kicked in the back early in the game, recieved treatment and played the rest of the game. I don't think it's too serious and he would have had 9 days to recover anyway.

I have to play Sess unless I sell HRK, and next week I'll probably be needing a defensive transfer or else field Demel, Cuellar and Cameron/Nelsen. Torn between going big on a Sess upgrade (Silva) or preparing to play Sess against Southampton and getting a benchable mid (e.g. Pilkington) in case Michu gets banned. Latter would leave the option of Mata next week too.

I don't think we have the luxury of trading out fit and starting players (who are decent-and-sound options) when injuries and bans rack up quick this time of year. Your team is in good shape, a saved FT may just be the way to go to better prepare for the inevitable problems next GW.

I do like this reasoning. Brings me back to HRK, who I worry isn't a fit and starting option, but he COULD hurt arsenal if he does play. And Demel is a growing concern, but i don't have him to start at present.

sorry, the first part of my post was more in reference to the sess move. I think sess' transfer isn't a priority. I'm not up on Demel and HRK's situation, but if they're doubts and you have a good long term replacement, then they're the better transfer than Sess. Shame Puncheon has a blank and can't be a straight swap.

If you dont have Suarez then it may be worth a punt, depends on who you decide to bench in his place if you do though. Wait until tomorrow for confirmation first.

According to some people wearing a green bib in training instead of a yellow one means he's going to be benched this weekend.

Apparently so. That and the fact that Rodgers said he would rest him at some point would lead one to believe that this is 'that week' that he rests him. Nothing is 100% anyway, best to wait till the lineups come out, Liverpool ones usually come out early (Demi sees to that) 🙂

I have Enrique, ridgewell, bale and giroud all flagged. With poss of sterling getting rested, I need to sell at least two, which ones are least likely to recover

      2 FTs
      Pretty set on:

      Azipilcueta > G.Johnson
      Enrique > Sagna/Gibbs

      Still can't field XI though.

Cheeky one week JonJo Shelvey punt?
      Ramirez > Shelvey?

if you're already in a position where you can't field XI I think buying a player bound to put you in that position again seems unwise. could pay off short term of course, but it'll cause another problem down the road.

unless he scores a hatrick, ousts suarez up front and goes on to be the most celebrated bald footballer since attilio lombardo

Feck it. 8 point hit, I think.
Like most of us on here, I have loads of doubts/ definitely outs this GW.
1 GK and 5 outfield players to be exact. It's been this way for weeks and weeks. I'm not moaning, as it's my own fault for not dumping the likes of Gunter & Guthrie MUCH earlier.
But I'm sure you can all empathise that the "front 7" transfer nearly always take priority every week.
First 8 point hit since August 2011 coming up.
Haven't a fecking clue what it will be...

😆 I like your 2 FTs above. I wouldn't do the Shelvey punt. Look elsewhere for the Ramirez replacement. Maybe West Brom mid? Good fixtures but rotation looms with Clarke.

        I would.
We just can't seem to score more than 1 goal at Anfield this season.
        Rooney PKs too.
Suarez WILL have many off target ( minus PPI ) even if he scores it'll prob be 6 pts max.

“I’ve had some treatment and then we will see. I hope I can be fit for the game.”

This is the same quote that had us believing he’d more than likely be OK for the weekend. Sounds like Sky Sports have understood that quote as the opposite and have therefore put it up as a story.

If nothing more has been said since then, then surely we need to hear more from Liverpool until we move out him.

No update on Walcott -- need tomorrow's press conference to indicate anything new. Dempsey? No injury reports that I've heard, though in general when Ade and Bale are both back (and Dembele) I guess he's not secured a start.

moderately plausible paranoia is what it seems to me. Early season comments from Rodgers generally indicating that a 17-year-old can't play 90min every game coupled with a theory of training-ground bibs predicting starting players (of which Sterling was on the sub team, though someone rightly pointed out that bib theory holds for friday practices, not necessarily thursday's).
