The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Boxing Day – Part Two

Gareth Bale blasts a hat-trick to confirm his returns to fitness and heavy-hitting fantasy status, while the Potters find a cutting edge to recover from an early setback and consign Liverpool to defeat. Here’s part two of the Boxing Day Stock Check…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
A devastating hat-trick took Bale to nine goals for the season and gives the Welshman six goals in his last six league appearances. Incredibly, Bale has scored just two goals and only one of his four assists at White Hart Lane, proving to be a deadly weapon on the road. With strong fixtures to come, Bale’s form will bring him huge investment with significant FPL price rises to follow.

Jermain Defoe
His opening strike for Spurs took the England man to ten for the season and keeps Defoe bubbling in the FPL rankings, some 11 points ahead of Wayne Rooney. Bale’s form and his popularity as a midfield acquisition will doubtless dent Defoe’s appeal but Defoe shouldn’t be dismissed lightly. He has started every league match since Gameweek 11 and has never gone more than three starts without scoring.

The Spurs Defence
Their strong run continues: Andre Villas-Boas’ rearguard have now kept four clean sheets in the last five after earning their third consecutive shut-out this evening. With their fixtures remaining strong (sun RDG qpr), there’s no reason to suggest that this kind of form won’t continue in the short-term at least, with Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris justifying their current rankings in our Watchlist.

Steven Gerrard
The converted spot-kick at the Britannia gave Gerrard a third goal in three league starts and means that he’s now delivered returns in five of his last six outings. As tonight’s display demonstrated, however, consistency remains an issue in the Liverpool camp.

Jon Walters
One of the most unfashionable Fantasy assets around, Walters demonstrated what he is capable of by delivering a brace to notch his biggest returns of the season. With five goals and three assists so far, Walters has delivered strong value for his 6.4 price tag and, if Michael Kightly retains the right-wing role shifting Walters up in support of the lone striker, he could yet go on providing profit.

Kenwyne Jones
With strong and reliable budget options thin on the ground up front, Jones has quietly established a starting role in Tony Pulis’ side at the expense of Peter Crouch and is taking his opportunity. While the Potters attack is far from potent, Jones looks an effective blunt instrument and has provided two goals in three games, with an assist tonight – a good return on a 5.0 FPL price tag.

Going Down

Ryan Shawcross & Geoff Cameron
Both were teetering on the tightrope and both toppled off with bookings in the victory over Liverpool. The Stoke defensive stalwarts, with over 40% FPL ownership between them, will now miss the home league clash with Southampton this coming weekend.

The Villa Defence
Having conceded just two goals in five matches between Gameweeks 12-17, Paul Lambert’s back four have simply capitulated in the last two matches, shipping 12 goals to Chelsea and Spurs. With five conceded to City and three to United, it’s becoming clear that Villa are all too easily disposed of by the bigger sides. While fixtures are obliging in the coming weeks, confidence in the Villa rearguard has been shattered.

Steven Caulker
Caulker has, on occasions, looked a strong option within the Spurs back four, having enjoyed a run of starts from Gameweek 6-11. Since then, however, he has been subject to heavy rotation with the likes of Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Jan Vertonghen all vying for the centre-back roles. Caulker was benched again today and with Benoit Assou-Ekotto close to a return at left-back, it appears the Vertonghen/Gallas partnership could emerge as the established first choice option.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Around here top 10,000 is what most people are trying to get to by the end of the season. You don't need to have too much bad luck to derail that ambition though.

However, if you loo around, there are some managers who get there most years, regardless of the breaks.

          Yeah, I'd say so.

I've clawed my way back to just outside top 100k after a somewhat shocking first half of the season (up 100k places in this GW alone!)

So with the right transfers and a bit of luck it's definitely possible.

If you;re dropping down to that price bracket you'd be OK with Lambert or Berbatov I think.

Don't think hernandez can ever be more than a 2 gameweek punt, because he's unlikely to start more than that in a row.

What do you guys think of a five man midfield - being dissatisfied with the current striker pool?

    Gerrard - Michu - Carzola - Bale - Mata

These players I consider to be the essential of their teams and obviously showing their high point return. It can be pretty fluid too as they have high price and thus can be swapped out for Fellani when he returns, or Silva, Hazard when they find their form, etc.

I want to also fit Van Persie in the strikers and have a lower priced striker such as Defoe, Ba, or Berbatov, even Suarez if price permits.

I did have a spell of 3-5-2 with Pog as sub. But switched back to 3-4-3 when I got Saurez. Have considered going back but it's the cost as I have Schneiderlin as first sub at 4.4 at present but for a third striker you have to spend 5.0 minimum or you are just wasting a slot. I have considered Tevez out to fund Fellaini back in and go 3-5-2 with this team:

      Mata Cazorla Michu Fellaini Nolan
      Saurez RVP (6.0)

I like this approach... I have Bale - Silva - Mata - Michu and trying to figure out a way of bringing Cazorla back. It might require a WC though, unless I do a straight Silva to Santi. I dont have Gerrard but since I have Suarez up front, it gives me some LIV coverage

Hi guys, would really appreciate some help with my team. “Risks” in caps:

    Begovic
    Cuellar, Luiz, SHOREY
    Snodgrass, Bale, MICHU, STERLING, Young
    Van Persie, Tevez

    Jussi, DEMEL, ROONEY(OUT), CAMERON(OUT)

Rooney & Shorey need to go, do i need to get an Arsenal player yet or should i just leave enough funds to upgrade Sterling/Snodgrass to Walcott/Cazorla?

Thinking either Hernandez & Gibbs/Enrique/Skrtel or Defoe & Evra/Evans (leaving enough to upgrade Sterling/Snodgrass to Walcott for DGW)

    cheers!

    Heads up...

I believe that many are not aware that if you click on the FPL fixture score, in the drop down box that gives all the scorers, baps, assists etc, there is a link in the bottom right hand corner that says 'detailed stats'. If you click on this you get full stats on every player for that game including the PPI scores on which bonus is calculated. Hope this helps. 🙂

Slow start but jumped from 9th to 2nd in my ML with Bale's points this weekend, no one has him in my top 10 but now everyone probably will, not that it matters as I made up the places and aim to stay there now 🙂

So much spelling fail in my post. But give him a fresh angle, the man has been a monster and a single consistent factor in our midfield for 5 years. This year, playing with much more freedom and playing a lot of forward passes. 94% pass accuracy vs. Swans and don't know about today. Your opinion is about to change. The man is class.

Which equates to about 3 weeks in charge. Shambles of a club. Jack Walker will be turning in his grave.

Saving the transfer till saturday after the deadline to get Ivanovic and Fellaini back. I will then have this team below. Would you do anything differently instead of those two?
    Begovic (Cerny)
Nasty | Ivanovic | Cameron (Davies | Nelsen)
Bale | Mata | Michu | Fellaini (Puncheon)
    RVP | Tevez | Ba
    0.1 in the bank

    Cheers.

A fantastic 78 points less 4 for a hit. Truly delighted. Hits can work.

7 on the bounce, although needed it having been languishing in mid-table mediocrity!

Wow, I beat my cup opponent this week by 50 clear points. He didn't have such a bad team either and was active. I don't think I will get as lucky in the third round though.

I have Cameron, Gorkss (rarely plays and poor defence) & Shorey (seems to have been dropped & poor if does play)
So potentially I have only 2 defenders next GW.
Is it worth a 4pt hit for Sagna? If so who do I get rid of?

A: Cameron (I have Begovic for Stoke cover) and release more funds for Walcott and Caz
    B: Gorkss
    C: Shorey
