The Numbers Game – Festive Form – Midfielders

Continuing our members articles which examine the numbers behind the previous four Gameweeks, we now switch our attention to the midfield area. With a packed festive programme providing hat-tricks for Santi Cazorla, Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott, it was a period which again saw the heavy-hitting midfielder come to the fore. Incredibly, however, that trio were surpassed by the performances of a player who has rolled back the years to recapture a level of returns and consistency that we perhaps thought were behind him.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Any chance Lambert rises twice [once tonight and again later this week] before DGW?

I have Suarez at 10.4 and was thinking of buying Lambert now at 6.2, selling Fri or Sat if he's at 6.4 and bringing Suarez back in as he won't rise this week away to Manchester United it doesn't look.

Too risky for a 0.1 or worth it to try and play the market for 3 days?

I don't want Lambert for the weekend or long term.

Yes nothing really to lose I guess I bought Suarez at 10.4 and the only thing to "lose" is if for some reason he goes to 10.5 and I miss it in some stange way - or I stupidly decide to re-work the team when I see that 4M+ sitting there, but it may be worth the 0.1m increase.... I'll do it.

Hey guys. Could really use some advice with all this DGW madness. This is my current team. I’ve got 2 free transfers.

    Jaaskelainen
    Cuellar / Baines / O’Brien
    Bale / Puncheon / Michu / Walcott / Mata
    Van Persie / Berbatov

    [Begovic / Hernandez / Hughes / Nelsen]

    How do these transfers sound?

    Begovic to Turnbull
    O’brien to Martin R
    Hernandez to Ba [-4]

Alternatively, I could play Hernandez and bench Michu or Walcott. Many thanks for any suggestions!

Wait for news on Cuellar, and play Hughes over OBrien.

If Cuellar is out, Cuellar > Martin could work

Good front 8 - maybe drop Nelsen, Cuellar or Hughes and bring in Azpilicueta, Shaw or Clyne.

The announcement of the Chelsea DGW did shake things up a bit! I'm not using my wildcard now i don't think unless i get some very bad news in the Friday pressers. You reckon this team is good enough to get by this GW?

I think it's easier to transfer DGW players IN over a few weeks and then transfer them out all at once rather than the other way around. Just my opinion though.

Also a lot of variables such as most transfers should be completed by then and injury news (such as Wilson) can be accounted for

the DGW is now though. I'm in a similar boat to you with not many DGWers and 2 WCs. I'm struggling to justify a couple of 8 pts spends to get requisite DGW cover when I have a spare WC taunting me 🙂

To be honest I think DGW22 is a bit overrated. avl and che are hardly the best fixtures for Southampton and I already have Puncheon.

The Ba/Torres situation is keeping me away from them and I'm getting Mata so I should be ok there. Would love a Chelsea defender over Cuellar/Nelsen but I don't think it's worth a 4 point hit and certianly not a WC

a controlled WC now (ie largely ignoring WHU and SOT) and judicious subs gets to a nice position from GW24 for a potentially large point pick up (20+pts i reckon)

only for teams with great depth, i.e Manu, CIty, Chelsea and probably Everton. Some Managers' cause are already helped with players leaving for ACON, hence it's gametime for the usual bench fodders.

I personally think thin squads have to play their strongest team on the field no matter what. even Arsenal.

Thanks Jamaster. That is a concern as the top echelon of defenders will be out of reach without a re-shuffle. I just think they've done little to prove their value though. I still have options with Zab though. He can be a straight swap to the likes of Gibbs and Azpi etc.

I feel as though this season might be a game of two different ones. Second half could leave us questioning why we didnt put more emphasis on defense. It usually happens. the free flowing style will slow down as managers look to the end of the season these bigger teams will be forced to get clean sheets and then the left and right backs will still pick up one or two attacking points here and there. just my feeling. But ofcourse I could be well wrong.

      hey, i'm also WCing GW24.

      here's my thoughts:

      1. defence lack a Norwich player. Take a keeper out for Bunn or get Bassong/Turner.
      2. consider Gibbs over Zaba. i know the City lad is tempting, but ARS's fixtures are as tasty as Norwich's.
      3. I personally like the phrase, "if you're going Ruiz, you have to have the power 5". so try to get Michu instead, worth the extra quid as he's playing on top.

      the rest looks very,very nice.

Cheers Berg. I'll have another look at Norwich. In terms of the power 5 you're essentially saying if you get Ruiz you want to bench him every week. But I want Ruiz cos I think he'll score well. I fancy him and hernandez in rotation will outscore Michu over those fixtures I mentioned.

    Zabaleta - Azilicueta - Bassong (Naughton)(Demel)
Bale - Fellaini - Mata - Michu (Nolan)
    Lambert - RvP - Dzeko

    Then in GW23
    Azil -> Gibbs
start Nolan/Demel for DGW, bench Lambert

    Thoughts?
I like Ruiz and could look to downgrade Lambert to Ruiz, go 4-5-2, and take the -4 hit to provide more $/options later... or safe up that transfer.

I'm using my WC, so trying to get this team set as best as possible now.

    Thoughts?

Same here. Looking like 3 ARS, 3 CHE, 1-2 SOT and 1 WHU at the moment.

    GJ / Cuellar / O'brien (B.Jones / Shorey)
    Fellani / Puncheon / Michu / Bale
    Rvp / Suarez (vc) / Ba (c)

    Subs right?
Need to take a hit to bring anyone else in?

I dont think you should be having walcott on the bench. if he plays striker at home. Hard not to see him getting a blank.

Na I have Bego aswell, so I'll just get rid of Turnbull on WC, or before if I have a FT that I need to use because I'm quite happy with my team at the moment

Alreet lads. I see that Kilgallon has played the last 3 games for sunderland? O'Shea has been out. And now there is doubt over cuellar. Do we think that i will get enough games out of him to cover until wilson gets back in the stoke team? Its either him, or a reading defender, and I have more faith in the sunderland defence. Even with injuries.

Anyone else looking at Noble? I know it would be a bit of a dgw punt but I think he will be secure even though much of their attack is in flux right now. Would also mean benching Michu or Fellaini so I am wondering if it is even worth the hassle. Thanks.

I would expect michu and fellaini to score more over one game, than noble over two. So no, its not worth it

That's what I'm thinking as well. If JOBrien is fit might rather have him in.

    4.3M defender + Bale
    OR
Big Verm + Nolan (with enough cash left over to bring in Bale after the DGW - when Wilson is fit. NB Would normally go for gibbs over Big Verm as he is better value, but as I have to down grade the defender in order to get Bale, I might as well make it Big Verm, rather than keep the spare in the bank. Right?

Would need to see the rest, but presuming the defender will see some bench time then A is quite clearly the better answer. Bale will outscore Nolan by enough to justify his pricetag.

My latest WC draft goes the uber cheap defender route, as I have poor team value.

        TURNBULL Begovic
Davies DEMEL Turner SHAW Kilgallon (until Wilson is fit)
        Bale MATA Fellaini WALCOTT PUNCHEON
        Rvp Suarez Ba

        Then Mata > Santi

But I was thinking that if I pull my WC, I should try and maximise the DGW exposure. The Arsenal defender would play every game until Wilson is fit. And the rest rotate very nicely.

Bale has QPR away. But the alternative move gives me 2 extra DGW players AND a much stronger defender to cover until Wilson is back. Nolan has good fixtures too

But this is why I wouldnt wildcard now, as planning transfers straight after a wildcard is a dangerous game as your always gonna get injuries.

Agree with this. You are locked into getting back Bale immediately since Nolan is such a downgrade for the longterm. Anything else goes wrong and you will be taking hits to fix the problem that the WC should solve.

But looking at points potential Gibbs is probably the better pick. also you are a brave man going with no bale this week if you decide on that.

      Against arry -
      its QPR
      Bales form
      Away game

      All those factors scream points.

Since the crowd here's changed. REPOST!

    Pick one and why gents?

    A) Sagna + Zabaleta

    B) Gibbs + Clichy

    Cant have Zaba and Gibbs.

      I would say b

clichy can still do the job.

Gibbs has less people competing for his points. While Zaba is also slightly more rotation prone in the long run.

Many here have speculated that Sagna could be a rotation threat since he has not played well lately. I am keeping an eye out for Jenkinson, but until then Gibbs is the most vital of the four that would be my pick.

Anybody mind RMWT? 1m in the bank. As you can see I'm going pretty heavy for the DGWs. Also I'm worried about the lack of Bale and Michu, are they important enough to try and fit in?
