The ScoutCast – Episode Ninety Four – Resumption

Back for 2013, fully refreshed, slightly rusty and balancing the same chips on our shoulders, Granville are I make a return to the podcast studio.

The New Year presents my beleaguered co-host with a 51-point gap to bridge as I spent Christmas “ho-ho-ing” about three midfield hat-tricks, leaving Granville to roll out one mighty miffed in this week’s episode.

Elsewhere, we pick at the double Gameweek buffet, eagerly scoffing on the Chelsea canapés whilst wondering if Rafa has hidden something nasty in the vol-a-vents. We rinse that down with the latest transfers in and out in “all aboard”, preview all the weekend fixtures and carry out the latest emergency surgery on the ailing ScoutCast team.

Normal service is resumed via this link or you can pour this straight into your ears via the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Final piece of the puzzle? 4.4m available.

    (A) Clarke - my preferred option but means Ba -> Tevez definitely isn't possible next week.
    (B) Turner/Martin
    (C) Clyne
    (D) Davies
    (E) Someone else

    Turnbull
    Gibbs, Baines, xxx
    Mata(c), Walcott, Fellaini, Bale
    RVP, Ba(v), Lambert

    Szczesny, Marveaux, Mariappa, Demel

      Can you explain why you think Marveaux is a good prospect? I'm sure you're aware that his position in the starting lineup is about to come to an end.

        I decided to go down the uber cheap 5th mid route in my WC (can make arguments for and against that) to get the other high value players. I have the other WC too so will probably only be for a couple of months, then I can reassess if he loses his place.

        I think of all the uber cheapies he is the best option - playing OOP, good fixtures, very decent stats, and I think his place is fairly secure for the short term with Ba gone and Barfa injured.

        That said, he will start from the bench for me every week.

          Cabaye is returning and Newcastle will make new signings. You might get lucky if he lasts in the starting lineup till HBA returns but that would be very fortunate if he does last that long (mid feb). I would say Puncheon is a more worthy option then you can get a cheap 4m defender instead of a 4.4 one. Puncheon even has the DGW although admittedly that would give you a bench problem for this week only.

            Yeah, that's an option, although Marveaux is only 4.3m, so it'd only leave me 3.8m for the defender (Mariappa is more than enough REA for me!)

            Thing is, I don't think I'd start Puncheon any weeks with the other front 7, so is there an argument that the 0.6m is a bit wasted? I'd be rotating my cheapies at the back with Baines/Gibbs playing every week, and Clark would probably start 3 of the next 5 weeks for me.

              If a player is injured for one game (or suspended) a playing 5th mid who is half decent is invaluable.

                Fair point. I think you can fix a lot of injury/suspension issues with free transfers though, plus I'd have the other 2 defenders to come on for small points if Marveaux did lose his place.

                I suppose there is the argument that if I'm going down this road I could just get Guthrie in and save another 0.2m...

              Maybe consider Guthrie (who is even cheaper). He may have found he way back in favor. He will get more game time than Marveaux long term.

                Yep, considering him now. Means I can get Clarke and have enough in the bank for the option of Ba -> Tevez next week (If Tevez drops again...)

    Enjoying reading this article but there's one inaccuracy:

    Everyone knows Sunderland away is Mancini's bogey fixture 😉

    TW. I think that you have pulled me back from the brink. WC still in tact. I did GJ + Berba > Gibbs + Ba for my free transfers before the rises this morning.

    Now i'm weighing up whether to take hits or not for more chelsea (only got Ba at the moment). I was planning on getting in Mata for Santi, and to do that I would have needed to downgrade Foster to Turnbull. But now I am thinking that I will captain Ba, so not sure if it is worth the hits to get the other two in. Especially as I will probably want santi back next week.

    If I stick with the 1 chelsea, I will be able to get in Demel for Nelson next week. If I don't do that move I might only have 2 defenders playing (Shorey, Nelson and O'brian all doubts).

    If I go without Mata I would be bricking it for sure though!

    What do you reckon?

      I'm not TW but like you I only have Ba for the Chelsea DGW. I wouldn't want to sell Santi due to his DGW so it would be a bit pointless as you would miss out on an extra DGWer overall (wasted hit for no DGWer gain).

      I'm not sure Mata is worth fearing as he will get similar game time to Ba so it shouldn't worry you especially when you would captain Ba anyway.

      Personally I wouldn't mind having Luiz (more so than Mata) but he certainly wouldn't be worth a hit.

          Yeah like you I was very close to WC a few days back but I'm glad I've held. Now its a tricky decision about whether to use it in GW24 or DG25. I would like to hold out till the end.

            If you've kept hold of it now, might as well hold it to the very end I reckon. The only advantage of doing it week 24 is that you see the line ups before the deadline, but making any changes to your well thought out team at that stage would be a bit knee jerky for me!

    Everyone who has said that there is no need for triple Chelsea, and that they will be offloading Chelsea players after this DGW, have you looked at their fixtures?

    Home versus Arsenal you would put your money on goals and a Chelsea big win ( I would anyway).

    They then have Reading, Newcastle and Wigan.
    City away 🙂 (city fan)

    After that.............West Brom, Fulham, West Ham, Southampton and then Sunderland (H) and Spurs derby (H).

    Im going triple Chelsea the rest of the season if I have 3 this week.

      Rest of the season?

      Ba / Torres will probably be constantly rotated

      Once Mikel is back, in addition to a potential Fellaini signing, you've got a hell of a lot of competition for Luiz's spot.

      1 will suffice

        Ba will get his minutes. He'll prove his worth this week.

        Luiz will be nailed on, regardless of playing OOP. He'll partner Terry and Ivano will shift to RB and knockout Azpi. Cahill and Azpi are less nailed on that Luiz by a country mile.

        Ill be happy to keep at the very least 2 of them, and HOPEFULLY after this week, all 3 of them.

        If Ba plays up to his current form the only rotation will be for the last 10 mins of games to let Ba get his ovation leaving he pitch. Torres's form is dropping further than that Austrian buck in the spacesuit 😉

          Exactly Green....im sold on Ba for the rest of the season if he grabs a goal or two over the next 180mins.

          This double GW is pissing so many people off though including me. These two weeks can and will surely make or break seasons.

      Simply shocking backline, considering Nelson is off to the USA, Cuellar is doubtful, and Garrido and Norwich are not that appealing anymore, plus they play a Newcastle with a reinvigourated Cisse up front, and a list of players returning from injury.

      I'd play Demel over one, and hopef or a nil nil with Sunderland.

    I'm 6 pts ahead of my main rival. He is on his WC this week. He still has the other one in the bank. I will (probably) play my one WC at the latest possible moment.

    When I view his team on saturday, should I be more worried if he has gone all out for DGW players, or if he has taken a more long term approach? Is he more likely to be maximizing the DGWs, then WC at the end of January? Or holding his other card for end of season DGW?

    I will probably only have:
    1 x Chelsea (Ba)
    1 x Southampton (Puncheon)
    3 x Arsenal (Gibbs, Santi, Walcott)
    2 x West Ham (O'Brian, Demel)

    So i will probably only have to worry about Mata and a chelsea defender. And possibly someone like Nolan.

      If I had a WC available, and was on the January one, I wouldn't look to use the next before March. So he's obviously looking for long term solutions.

      I think you're okay with the DGWers you've got. But Mata can hurt you.

    I keep getting the feeling that I can without Bale until after United... I can't seem to shake the feeling he'll flop at QPR...

    For 2 weeks only what do you prefer?

    Baines Lambert and any 5th mid under 5.4...

    OR

    Harte Bale and Ruiz/Pog

    Mark has gone with Baines and he has been extremely lucky this year with his choices, so Baines will probably start scoring for him...

      Same issue mate. I've ditched Suarez, and I think I'm going with Baines and Mata myself. Mata will turn into Caz or Bale next week.

      The question is, have the recipients of Baines service changed? Not really, the only difference is anichebe who seems pretty good in the air, but is not going to be playing every game. Baines was consistently creating the most chances of a defender in the league but they simply weren't being finished, maybe it was highly due to jelavic being off form - his kick and miss from a Baines cross against Chelsea typified it.

      One free kick doesn't change the underlying problem, it's not him, it's them!

          Strangely, it's the "Mark factor" that has me seriously considering it... everything he has touched in the last few weeks has turned to gold, I might just sneak in the back door with this one in the form of a Baines punt...

    Wildcarding! What do you say?

    Jussi -> Turnbull
    Clyne -> Demel
    Nelsen -> Harte
    Nasty -> ShawX
    Santi -> Walcott
    Berbs -> Suarez
    Long -> Anichebe
    Cuellar -> ???

      Keep Jussi, Hammers decent defence, Turnbull will be benched in a week. Long out but not Anichebe. If your gonna get a chweapo that will play very little get Henriquez, think that's how you spell it. Might get his chance when Kone is on ACON duty, potentially class.Avoid Harte.

      As far as uber-cheap defs go, that ain't too bad......go uber-uber-cheap with Cameron>Wilson in two weeks or so.

      Maybe Clyne for a DGW this week, but then again SOT def.......even on a double ain't gonna be great....

      Difficult one. I personally wouldn't want to bench either. I would get ba instead of lambert, and downgrade Lampard to a benchable midfielder.

        Lampard to Noble

    Reply to lucky

    If Cabeye is back, I would expect us to line up as follows

    Marveaux--Cisse--Obertan
    --------------Cabeye------------
    ---------Jonas--Anita---------

    Cabeye is expected to be on the bench though. So Bigi will probably keep his place in midfield.

    Tiote didn't play against Brighton. As far as I know he is in Africa (hopefully)

        He should be ok at least until Barfa is back. No date for that yet. Last I heard was sometime in Feb.

        Even when he is on the bench, he should be first change for any of the 4 attacking players, so should still get a fair bit of playing time, especially considering our luck with injuries this year

    My Wildcard Draft for to be taken in GW24:

    Begovic/Fredirici
    Gibbs/Baines/Demel/Davies/Shaw
    Mata/Bale/Michu/Fellaini/Walcott
    RVP/Ba/Pog

    Prolly will stick on this.Concern is to downgrade Baines to Upgrade Pog?
    No City Cover is another concern.

    Looking forward to your suggestions.
