Spot the Differential – Gameweek 22

As always, Friday evening closes with some overlooked alternatives for your consideration. Our trio of protagonists all have favourable home games on their respective agendas and while a couple of them are looking to maintain their impressive displays, our final selection will be hoping for a return to the form that ripped apart Premier League defences in the latter part of the previous campaign:

Bryan Ruiz

With many Fantasy managers opting for Dimitar Berbatov as a route into Fulham’s attack, the Costa Rican has been significantly overlooked. The statistics, however, highlight just how consistent Ruiz has been for Martin Jol’s side this season – he has scored or assisted in eight of his 12 appearances so far and averaged 4.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points per game. Indeed, his pivotal role for the Cottagers is summed up by their goal returns – Fulham have found the net 25 times in the 12 games with Ruiz in the side in comparison to seven goals in the 10 games without him.

Having recovered from a recent hamstring injury, Ruiz has made an immediate impact, producing a goal, an assist and a couple of bonus points since returning to the starting XI in Gameweek 20. Tucked in behind Berbatov, his creativity makes up for the fact he has found the net just twice – Ruiz has eight assists to his name, a tally beaten by only two other forwards; Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez, with 10 and nine respectively. Coming in at just 5.4 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of around 1% in both games, he looks a strong differential for tomorrow’s home clash with Wigan and looks a real alternative for those Fantasy managers eyeing up a 3-5-2 first choice formation with their winter wildcards.

Steven Fletcher

The summer signing from Wolves has been key to Sunderland’s attacking forays this term. Since making his debut in Gameweek 3, Fletcher has played a part in 11 of the Black Cats’ subsequent 19 goals, finding the net eight times and supplying a trio of assists. The Scot has been something of a talisman for Martin O’Neill’s side this term – Sunderland have yet to lose a game in which he has scored and, as a result, Fletcher has also picked up 20 bonus points; only Van Persie, with 25, has collected more.

Coming in at just 7.0 in FPL, he’s the seventh top scoring forward, having racked up 94 points so far – an average of 4.9 points per game. While a home clash with West Ham affords him the chance to further his appeal, Fletcher has a favourable schedule over the next few Gameweeks which could see him continue to rack up the points. Priced at 7.7 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of 5% in FPL, he may prove a canny acquisition in the mid-price bracket as O’Neill looks Fletcher to provide the goals to engineer a scramble up the table for the Wearsiders.

Papiss Cisse

Demba Ba’s departure to Chelsea brings his former Newcastle team mate back on the radar after an admittedly disappointing 2012/13 campaign so far. Arriving at Tyneside in last season’s winter transfer window, Cisse took the Premier League by storm, grabbing 13 goals and a pair of assists in just 14 appearances as the central forward in a 4-3-3.

Alan Pardew’s decision to shift Ba into the middle, either in a 4-4-2 alongside his compatriot or as the lone striker in a 4-3-3, proved hugely detrimental to Cisse’s prospects, with the former SC Freiburg man mustering a mere four goals over 19 appearances so far. Tomorrow’s trip to Norwich offers Cisse the chance to finally return to his favoured role and with the Canaries conceding in each of their last nine, he looks an enticing option, with a home game against Reading to follow next time out. Coming in at 8.8 in FPL and 9.3 in the Sky Sports game, Cisse’s lowly FPL ownership of 3% is understandable given his exploits so far, but he could be a different proposition altogether if he comes anywhere close to replicating last terms displays.

    Next week, would you rather do:

    a) Mata -> Santi
    b) Ba -> Pod
    c) Azpil -> Gibbs

    Will already have Szczesny & Walcott for the Arsenal DGW next week. It's normally better to have attackers for DGWs, but looking at the ARS fixtures, I see more clean sheets than goals over the coming weeks....

    Hey guys, is the following worth a 4pt hit?

    G.Johnson & Silva > Azpilicueta & Mata?

    Have only Ba as my DGW coverage

    For anyone with a similar situation to me... (Pepin!)

    OK, I've worked out that I have to go with Bale (Harte & Ruiz/Pog) over Baines (Noble/Puncheon & Lambert)...

    Let me break it down... I have been planning all along and will follow through on my plan to swap Ba > Podolski for GW23 (I like Pod for a good 4/5 weeks and will keep him in a 3-5-2)... so that would leave me with one FT in GW24 to bring Bale back in after the United game... but I can't even manage it with one hit... at best I'd have to take an 8pt to get Bale back in...

    So even if there is an upside to me having Lambert for his DGW and/or Baines for his good fixtures... is it really worth me taking the risk of not having Bale for any potential explosion and having to pay 8pts to get him back?

    I think not...

    Bale & 8pts + (Harte & Ruiz/Pog) > Baines & Lambert + (Noble/Puncheon)...

      You lost me there a bit...so you are going with Bale over Baines? You can have both you know 😀

        Yes I can, but I think Luiz is going to outscore Baines easily this week...

        Basically, losing Bale will allow me to afford Lambert as my 3rd striker, and upgrade Harte > Baines...

        But the only way I can get Bale back in is with an 8pt hit in GW24... (since I will use my FT next week for Podolski)

        I don't think it's worth it, since I'm absolutely sure I'll want Bale for (nor wba)...

          Keep Bale. Lambert is not worth it. I am not sold on Luiz. Yes he is OOP, yes he can score, but you can see Chelsea conceding at Stoke and then is he going to start against Southampton?

          Besides, do you want to keep him for longer? It would mean another hit to get him out. I have resigned to not wanting him.

          Over the next 4 weeks, Baines will outscore Luiz. This way you can focus your transfers in your front 7, i.e. bringing in Pod / Tevez for Ba, Santi for Mata, etc.

      I dunno if this is any help cos I dont know you or your team (or previous posts about your decisions tonight etc) but for me its a simple as figuring out how you can get Bale and Baines in your team.

      Forget the other fluff about Puncheon/Lambert/Noble and double game weeks, it just leaves you with transfers out to make in the weeks ahead and of course thats always when this game screws us with injuries/suspensions too 🙂

      Baines and Bale are what you want, just get em and forget about em and then focus on other parts of your team.

        I can get Baines and Bale if I do a straight swap Luiz > Baines... but I'm pretty sure I want Luiz, he has a DGW, and a pretty good one at that!

          Fair enough, having Luiz for this GW looks a decent move then, I think he'll play both games too.
          I have a feeling Everton will keep a CS this week and Baines to have at least an assist, just a sneaky feeling based on a few Swansea blanks away from home recently but also based on the bias of Baines being in my team 🙂

      Spend some money to get a backup GK who actually plays. You never know. Aspi, is a real risk with JT back. I actually think Cahill is a better risk. How often will Davies play ? Might be worth saving the 0.2 and adding Clyne/Shaw.

        He would have been a great signing.........at the start of the season. It boils my piss to think that if we'd shown even the smallest amount of ambition, and spent 10-15m on debuchy, a centre back and maybe a young forward we could have had a great shot at 4th spot. Now it seems that all momentum has gone, and we're looking nervously over our shoulders. Not sure that a super attacking right back is what we need to solve our defensive woes. But he will be better than simpson. And hopefully we stay up and he gets bedded in, ready for next season

Either his wife is ill, or she has left him because he has been "putting himself about", depending on who you listen to. I desperately hope that we can at least keep him until the end of the season. And if we do, he can sort his head out. He hasn't exactly been on top form this season

      Ive gone mata just to be safe since he is likeliest to get both games imo
      Same team as ive got right now barring Baines, Fellani and Puncheon, so I like it!

          Probably best to go with Mata, just in case he has "one of those weeks" again. With everybody and his dog captaining him, I'd be left behind if he shine.

          Ba would probably be a differential, but I reckon Torres will start v So'ton

    Jussi (Bego)
    Walker Hughes Nastic Clyne (Cuellar)
    Mata Walcott Michu (Sterling Noble)
    RVP Suarez Berba

    Worth -4 for Walker->Luiz and Suarez->Ba?

      B by far for me, better fixtures and more chance of CS. Everton havent had one in 15 straight games

    Those who gamble on Chelsea defenders may profit handsomely this DGW. I personally think I will stay away. It saves me future transfers and allows me to have a better balanced team.

      It's funny.. I have gone from wanting and having both Ivan and Luiz and the beginning of the week, to now only having Luiz... and now actually considering losing all Chelsea defensive coverage... and for what?... Baines... for Leighton bloody Baines... I don't know if I trust him to not let me down... at least I have a DGW to be excited about with Luiz, and if it fails then so be it... I think Luiz will play both games and I think he'll keep at least one CS, and get one attacking return...

      I have to keep him... 😕

    Just realized liverpool have norwich next week, suarez has scored two hat tricks against them. Is he a better captain option than DGW walcott? I realize nobody cares right now but might want to shape my squad for this.

    Is it 100% confirmed Cuellar is injured? If so, should I have Nelsen (vs Spurs) or Davies (vs Everton) playing? Bookies favour Nelsen for a CS more than Davies but I don't see how.

    Any little changes required?

    Fed (Bego)

    Luiz - Gibbs - Zabaleta (Mariappa - Demel)

    Bale - Ramirez (V) - Michu - Fellaini (Walcott)

    Ba (C) - Ruiz - RVP

    Zep, the other question is...do you want to have Azpi or Gibbs for their DGW?

    Because you can go Baines & Azpi and then even perhaps change to Gibbs, if you decide you don't want to drop Ba.

      I'm keeping Gibbs because he will keep a CS (and very possibly get an assist) against Citeh in a 1-0 win 😎

    With the common front duo of RVP and Suarez, do people think Suarez is expendable with the DGWs coming up? Even with Norwich up next for Pool?
