Spot the Differential – Gameweek 22

As always, Friday evening closes with some overlooked alternatives for your consideration. Our trio of protagonists all have favourable home games on their respective agendas and while a couple of them are looking to maintain their impressive displays, our final selection will be hoping for a return to the form that ripped apart Premier League defences in the latter part of the previous campaign:

Bryan Ruiz

With many Fantasy managers opting for Dimitar Berbatov as a route into Fulham’s attack, the Costa Rican has been significantly overlooked. The statistics, however, highlight just how consistent Ruiz has been for Martin Jol’s side this season – he has scored or assisted in eight of his 12 appearances so far and averaged 4.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points per game. Indeed, his pivotal role for the Cottagers is summed up by their goal returns – Fulham have found the net 25 times in the 12 games with Ruiz in the side in comparison to seven goals in the 10 games without him.

Having recovered from a recent hamstring injury, Ruiz has made an immediate impact, producing a goal, an assist and a couple of bonus points since returning to the starting XI in Gameweek 20. Tucked in behind Berbatov, his creativity makes up for the fact he has found the net just twice – Ruiz has eight assists to his name, a tally beaten by only two other forwards; Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez, with 10 and nine respectively. Coming in at just 5.4 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of around 1% in both games, he looks a strong differential for tomorrow’s home clash with Wigan and looks a real alternative for those Fantasy managers eyeing up a 3-5-2 first choice formation with their winter wildcards.

Steven Fletcher

The summer signing from Wolves has been key to Sunderland’s attacking forays this term. Since making his debut in Gameweek 3, Fletcher has played a part in 11 of the Black Cats’ subsequent 19 goals, finding the net eight times and supplying a trio of assists. The Scot has been something of a talisman for Martin O’Neill’s side this term – Sunderland have yet to lose a game in which he has scored and, as a result, Fletcher has also picked up 20 bonus points; only Van Persie, with 25, has collected more.

Coming in at just 7.0 in FPL, he’s the seventh top scoring forward, having racked up 94 points so far – an average of 4.9 points per game. While a home clash with West Ham affords him the chance to further his appeal, Fletcher has a favourable schedule over the next few Gameweeks which could see him continue to rack up the points. Priced at 7.7 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of 5% in FPL, he may prove a canny acquisition in the mid-price bracket as O’Neill looks Fletcher to provide the goals to engineer a scramble up the table for the Wearsiders.

Papiss Cisse

Demba Ba’s departure to Chelsea brings his former Newcastle team mate back on the radar after an admittedly disappointing 2012/13 campaign so far. Arriving at Tyneside in last season’s winter transfer window, Cisse took the Premier League by storm, grabbing 13 goals and a pair of assists in just 14 appearances as the central forward in a 4-3-3.

Alan Pardew’s decision to shift Ba into the middle, either in a 4-4-2 alongside his compatriot or as the lone striker in a 4-3-3, proved hugely detrimental to Cisse’s prospects, with the former SC Freiburg man mustering a mere four goals over 19 appearances so far. Tomorrow’s trip to Norwich offers Cisse the chance to finally return to his favoured role and with the Canaries conceding in each of their last nine, he looks an enticing option, with a home game against Reading to follow next time out. Coming in at 8.8 in FPL and 9.3 in the Sky Sports game, Cisse’s lowly FPL ownership of 3% is understandable given his exploits so far, but he could be a different proposition altogether if he comes anywhere close to replicating last terms displays.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Guys. In 3-5-2 would you rather have

Luiz + Dzeko + Ruiz (I get Ruiz as Dzeko might not always play and reckon he would be a good bencher)

    or

    Davies + Aguero + Pogre.

Assuming Aguero is fit. Therefore RVP and Aguero will always play and Pog will just rot in bench.

Would you still pick the first one?

just dont think a rotting third striker is the way to go myself but then avoids any benching problems. i mean yes aguero is better then dezeko when fit no doubt but his price takes its toll on your team

Yeah it's mainly a matter of Dzeko + Luiz or Aguero + Davies.

Damn if only Aguero was out for a month more. I wouldn't have this problem 😀

He'll be back next week, just in time for my WC.

I want Cuellar long term; no other defenders in that price range appeal to me.

Been doing some research on West Brom forums; seems that Jones is nailed and 1st choice RB now. He's their RB of the future. Reid is perma-crocked.

Can't fit Fellaini in that midfield, it was either Michu or him. Easy pick for me. No way I was going down the power 5 route.

Never had Baines this year, don't want him. Getting him in will destroy my front 7.

        Post your team again bud.

The way I am going I can't afford either Jones or Carlos 😀

If you are not playing Puncheon in a DGW, you will never play him. Why not downgrade to Guhtrie and spend the cash to upgrade defense?

I've played him multiple times already (Bale suspension, Michu injury, etc).

In case of emergencies, I want the option of playing Puncheon with the potential of an assist and the odd goal rather than Guthrie's 2 points. 🙂

I love my defense. Stoke-Sunderland-West Brom-West Ham-Swansea rotation + a keeper from a big club (Arsenal's fixtures from 23-27 are gold). Good, solid teams with decent defenses. I stayed away Villa, QPR and Soton defenders for obvious reasons.

Well, I will give it a try.

For me, it wasn't Pog, it would have been Guthrie - in both cases, they will never play. But Pog I'd argue is better than most cheap midfield bench fodder as he seems to be nailed on, is actually a striker with a good scoring pedigree, and is on penalties.

What's your view on the P5?

Isn't Harte/Shorey on all set-pieces? Didn't know Pog was the pen taker.

Honestly not a fan of the power 5 since I want 3 top strikers at all times. Mids will blank more often than strikers (Michu and Fellaini are exceptions since they are pseudo-forwards) so I want to be able to depend on points from my forward line. RVP-Suarez-Ba is as consistent as you can get (as of now).

Baines is a great shout for the next 4 GWs but downgrading him will do wonders for the rest of your team.

Pepin, let's just continue on this page...

    I think looking at Baines’ form and fixtures, I am being very reasonable to give him 1 CS, 1 goal, 1 assist and 5 BPs in those 4 games… that is 8 (app pts) + 4 + 6 + 3 + 5 = 26pts from the 4 games…

Looking at Luiz now… I think he will get at least 2 CS, 1 goal and 2 BPS…

    That is 10 (app pts) + 8 + 6 + 2 = 26pts…

Same points and almost a million cheaper, Luiz has way better value…

    Are my projections fair?

Are you planning to upgrade either Pog or Puncheon at some stage?
With those two you only really have 6/7 forwards/mids each week.
Is spending the money you save from having both of them in your defence really worth it?

I would consider losing Luiz, but until further notice, don't you consider him to be another midfielder anyway???

I really reckon so many people are going to be livid in 24-48hrs time whatever they end up doing 🙁

No need for Bassong - too expensive and unlikely to keep scoring goals. Get Turner or Martin if you want Norwich coverage

Do Pog and Punch rotate well...you will have to play one of them every week.

      Rest looks solid, Stup.

Yea actually Pog and Puncheon rotate brilliantly.

Bassong I think you're right mate. That was literally a Scoutpick idea which on paper looks good, but Newcastle are regrouping after injuries, so Norwich may concede, and Newcastle are due a cleanie........cue Bassong goal, cs and bonus.

Jussi is what I was thinking - spread the risk rather than put all eggs in the Stoke basket.

I know puncheon has two games, but is he really going to get anything from the Chelsea game? (other than two points, assuming no yellows)

With so many 'who to bench' headaches for everyone this week there's going to be some seriously pissed off people at the end of the GW isn't there?

I think i'm the only one in here using WC but not going to use Chelsea defenders because i think DGW Chelsea won't get clean sheet in both game. It will be a tough game.

    Stoke and Sot.
Sot didn't use their key players when Chelsea first team (available) trashed them in FA.

Yea but Luiz is playing OOP and they have some of the best attacking defenders in the league, if not, THE best attacking defenders.

Luiz, Azpi, Terry, Cole, Cahill, Ivano.........goals goals goals assists assists assists, left and right at times.

Luiz goals only come via Free Kick from now. Defensive mid is hard to score. CB has better chance to score than Defensive mid

Ivan yes im considering him But i think baines is a better option.
Azpi and Cahill not nailed on.
Gibbs is better option than cole.

I have serious doubts over the immediate returns of the so called power 5 this week...

I can see Michu & Walcott easily returning 2pts each... possibly Bale... Fellaini if he plays should get at least an assist, and Mata should get 10pts at least... anything less will be disappointing...

21pts from that midfield is horrible...
