Scout Report – Roland Lamah

Michael Laudrup has plundered the Spanish market once again in his first move of the January transfer window. The Swansea boss has snapped up 25-year-old Belgian international midfielder Roland Lamah on an 18-month loan from La Liga club Osasuna, with the option to make the deal permanent at any point:

Lamah was unavailable for last night’s FA Cup replay at Arsenal but has been registered in time for the Swans’ home game against Stoke on Saturday as Laudrup looks to bolster his squad in light of the hectic winter schedule. The new boy was keen to praise his club’s style of play and, in a similar scenario to last summer’s acquisitions, admitted the Dane was a key factor in his decision to move to the Premier League:

“The team want to keep the ball and pass it, which is the strength of the players here. I think that style is best for me, so I’m delighted to join Swansea on loan. I really like the Premier League. I think you get more space to play, and that’s good for attacking players like myself. The team are doing very well in the league and the cups also, so it’s a great time to arrive at Swansea. And, of course, Michael Laudrup is in charge so I’m looking forward to playing and learning under him.”

The Statistics

Lamah has picked up plenty experience across the continent, playing in four top divisions already. The Ivory Coast-born player move to Belgium at the age of 15 and made his debut for lower league club Vise in 2003-04 before being snapped up by Anderlecht the following season. Afforded just six appearances for the club, he then move to Dutch outfit Roda and, in his most successful campaign so far, returned 11 goals and five assists from 32 appearances, helping the club to ninth spot in the Eredivisie before moving to France to ply his trade for Le Mans.

Over three full seasons, Lamah produced 10 goals and 11 assists in 92 league matches and was picked up by Osasuna in the summer of 2011. His time in La Liga proved less successful, though, with 45 games harvesting three goals and a trio of assists before Laudrup made his move earlier this week. The winger has represented Belgium at every youth level from U19 to U21, scoring seven times in 20 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side five times.

The Prospects

Although many reports have listed the new boy as a winger, Laudrup considers him more versatile and reckons he is capable of slotting in behind the striker as well as on the flanks:

“He is a player we had already watched before the season started. He is a player who is not a forward but who can play behind the striker in all three roles. He has a lot of individual quality, he is quite strong and has good quality one against one as well as a good shot. He has not played that much this season..,but I think that he will have a chance here and I am looking forward to working with him. He is a player that can be very useful for us.”

While the signing is good news for Swansea, it’s set to increase competition for places in the Swans’ attacking midfield areas – thus making rotation more of an issue, with Michu almost certainly the one exception. The left-footed Lamah is equally adept on either wing and will vie for a starting berth along with Pablo Hernandez, Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer, affording Laudrup the chance to utilise his squad more effectively. The Belgian could also be utilised in “the hole”, affording Michu the chance to play as the lone forward – Laudrup seems to be unconvinced over Danny Graham’s ability to effectively lead the line.

As the Swans slowly evolve under the new regime, it may well be that the likes of Dyer and Routledge are edged towards the periphery as the Dane continues to make his own stamp on the squad. While Michu’s place as the obvious Swansea Fantasy midfield candidate is not in doubt, Lamah’s arrival nevertheless dents the potential of decent mid-price candidates – Hernandez and Routledge, for example, have averaged 4.1 points per game, with the former producing attacking returns in six of his last 10 league games. With Lamah (who should come in around 5.0 – 6.0 in FPL) added to the mix, it doesn’t bode well for consistency of starts on the flanks as Laudrup attempts to clinch a place in the Capital One Cup final and looks to cements a top half finish in what has been a hugely impressive debut season in the Premier League thus far.

I would get rid of Luiz, he is not a midfielder anymore and Zabaleta looks good for me...
Saving 0.6 you can upgrade somewhere.
      O'Brien -> Demel? 0.5 savings
I'm not sure about Figueroa, have you heard about Davies from Swansea? Even if you want to take the risk you can go for Naughton...
With all the money you will be getting you could upgrade Kacaniklic...

Yeah i can save a fair bit downgrading some Defense which is the plan, think figueroa will be going down soon, but will get rid of him in my wildcard. Want to keep johnson in for this week against norwich but not sure about long term.

Luiz was in for a week and then the DGW so i will probably do what you said and rid of him, what do you think about having strong defense? is it worth just having a couple of higher priced players, or even just one? (zabaleta with demel and a stoke defender perhaps?)

        Cheers for the reply!

It's a matter of opinion actually, after the wildcard I'm playing three "strong" defenders

Debuchy / Luiz (swapped for Zabaleta already) / Gibbs

Johnson it's really good one, I just got rid of him because he had difficult fixtures.
After that I go for really cheap defenders (because they are there just to cover the big guys) but the ones that offer a great value:
Demel; Davies; Harte... they are really cheap but on some GWs they can do an outstanding job...
Speaking abut Stoke, I don't need one right now but I will do Demel or Davies for Wilson as soon as he is available...
I'm not a big fan of spending 7m on a deffender but it's good to have a couple of 5/6 guys getting points for you, three blanks on the defence every week helps no one...
Save money on Johnson and Luiz IMO but not too much, your midfield will thank you.

For goal threat it really has to be Podolski, with the exception of Reading Cazorla has had so little in open play. Even the Spurs goal came when they were down to 10 (same for Podolski there to be fair). Almost all of cazorla's alleged goal threat comes from long shots that miss, odds are poor. Plus Caz's fprm has gone down recently, tiredness perhaps, and Wilshere is getting some attacking duties too. The only downside is Cazorla making more of the extra 20 minutes or so he might get per game.

          I'd go podolski.

You could, but reckon he'll be getting Cazorla like points as more attacking for Wilshere means getting closer to Cazorla. Course, if budget is the constraint worth a flutter...

Their problem is that they were paying him X to get the job done, and now they know that they can get it done for Y in China.

Sack the man, directly outsource the work to China themselves and then X-Y = huge saving for the company.

Arguably you can't play him in EVERY game when you have a 50 mill striker on the bench, can we agree on that? Maybe on Football Manager 2012 (even there I don't think you'd get away with it), but not in real life.

Which is more important to Rafa, PL (where are without a chance of doing anything except CL-spot this year) or the semi-final of the Carling Cup? I say that there's a strong case towards dropping Ba if he's the first choice. Same problem if Torres is the first choice, he should be well rested now and ready to get a game or two.

And when I say PL I mean this specific game. Of course the importance of it is increased since it's a derby game, but either way, I think Torres is starting this game, Ba versus Swansea.

Pog isn't my problem, it's a 352 so my main points are in the midfield.
            I kinda disagree..
Fellaini gets injured, downgrade to 4.5. Upgrade Pog to 6.5 like Lukaku.
It's a risk you take with the 352 and it should pay off

I have Ba and Holt gotta bench one of the 2 and already done my transfer. (1.8 in bank) I have 3 Ars players and 1 Ham. I am thinking of taking a hit and bring C.Cole instead of Holt now since he will start with 4 points probably whereas both Holt and Ba might get 1 point easily. Then I ll be able to bring Aguero instead of Ba next GW. Thoughts?

I have finally overhauled a 100+ lead that my rival had over me and sit pretty at the top of our league by a humungous 1 point.

Transfers for this week, I was thinking Bale and Puncheon to Michu and Fellaini for -4 hit:

    Marveaux, Mata, Walcott, Michu, Fellaini
    RVP, Suarez

    Berba on the bench

Or is it worth it or just do a straight swap Bale to Fellaini for free:

    Marveaux, Mata, Fellaini, Bale
    RVP, Berba, Suarez

    What do you think?

Exactly this re. Sunderland - can't see MoN playing 2 up front in a month of sunday's, but think it's more likely to see him alongside Holt @ Norwich

I know he's a North east lad but you'd think he'd move for minutes on the pitch rather than his roots

Balls, use it up it is.

in this case, bring in Pod or just do Sturridge as i have 2 arsenal attacking players?

Just had lunch at the Tesco cafe, when I ordered the waitress asked if I wanted anything on my burger? So I had a fiver each way.

Why the rush to get Podolski in when he's playing 60 minute matches?!

This is a reasonable point,if Giroud would have better recent game time im sure he would be a priority (being cheaper too), unfortunately he is the lesser of 2 evils in this case. I would prefer doubling on Theo and Santi personally though.

short answer, because he's still in the top 10 FPL strikers despite that. and will be playing more minutes than virtually all his rivals.

long answer, minutes played per game started:
      63 71 81 73 71 66 84 64 70 80 76 79 68 66 90 78 81... 57 56.

        Here is my team: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/141/event-history/22/

Got 1 FT, want to get Podolski in. Should I drop Azpilicueta and get Davies to fund Podolski? Thoughts?

this could potentially be the best WC team I can come up with. Attacking cover from all the top teams (excluding Arsenal, and i'm a Arsenal fan!)

    Bego (Bunn)
Demel / Davies, Baines, Harte / Wilson
    Bale, Michu, Fellaini, Mata
    RVP, Suarez, Aguero

I've just realised I can do Pie & Berbs > Walcott + cheap striker (e.g. Pog).

It would also allow me to do Walcott/Caz > Fellaini next week and WC for GW25 to get Berbs back (if I decide to).

Can anyone think of a reason why I shouldn't do this? No Walcott is scaring me.

Would mean -4 points obviously, but I'm sure Walcott (c) will make up for not having Berbs (mci)
