Watchlist

The Watchlist – Ian Harte

When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

I guess it depends on whether you'd be happy with your front 8 with all 3. I like the way my team looks better with one or two expensive defenders.

I still like Fellaini a little more, but if you're only paying a 1/2 million premium over a full million, it's not an obvious choice. I can see the arguments for Michu.

Yeah I WC'ed before the Chelsea DGW.
Only way I can get Mata (w/o a massive overhaul to formation), is a swap for Bale. Would you do that??
If I was to make it a power 5 and lose Cole for Mata I'd have to downgrade my fwd's considerably which I wouldn't like so much.

If I save the Transfer this week I can do this next week...
        J.Cole > Marv/Guthrie
        Ba > Aguerro

I took on Bale after his hatrick instead of Mata and it's been disastrous.

I cannot stand buying players that are rotated, I've been stung so many times in the past by players like Aguero, Tevez, Ba, Luiz, that I tend to avoid them.

For this reason I'd take Fletcher over Ba, I wouldn't be able to cope with both Kun & Ba in my team, especially whilst holding RVP approaching CL. Could have a week when only 1 of your forwards actually start & at those prices I'd rather not.

That's just my opinion though... Although I am considering Bertrand 🙂 doh!

I've had this fixation with Dempsey ever since the United game. Have to ship Cazorla this week, thinking of doing:

hmmm that is intriguing but not sure i want to double up on stoke until i see they can keep cleanies again. plus, if i have double unless they have a great fixture i usually end up benching one as i get nervous.... and double whu with nasty on the bench this last week has left me scared 🙁

        good stuff 😀

        exactly! easy downgrade to anyone.

kinda... but i prefer rvp aguero studge to rvp studge + power 5

mata bale and walcott all equally and primarily essential imo. michu vs afro is a tough one. afro has nice fixtures though and i have a feeling he could perhaps do better. the decision was easy for me though as i can't afford michu (sold him for walcotts hatty :D)

Good work. I'll go w/o Mata for now but it does haunt me more than anything. I need to sacrifice someone to bring him in.

Hail and hearty thanks, all as mad as a box of frogs of course, and drive me bonkers.

Still alive is said to be better than the alternative. 🙂

Anybody watched the Leeds vs Spurs game? Who played the lone frontman for Spurs? Siggy or Bale?

What I mean is forward or striker, since Defoe wasn't named in the squad.
