Watchlist

The Watchlist – Ian Harte

When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

Chelsea's replay against Brentford will be played on the same weekend as the fifth-round matches on Feb. 16-17 since the next three midweeks are filled with fixtures in the Premier League, international football and the Europa League.

    RYAN BERTRAND
    **********************

I'm surprised not many people are willing to take a short-term punt on Bertrand, especially those who are chasing or on wildcards...

He's an OOP Chelsea defender playing LW at only 3.9 with only 3.6% ownership. Even if you start him for one GW & he only comes off the bench to score 1 pt, I wouldn't expect any other defender in the < 4.0 bracket to score anymore than 2 pt next GW.

It appears to be a very low risk, high reward move & with Chelsea suffering so many departures/injuries/bans at the moment I doubt there has ever been a better window of opportunity to take a punt on him than now.

Or am I being blindly optimistic?

    DISCUSS!!

Only for this week though. Was going to go RVP, Aguero and fletch with later on to Sturridge. But now that Ba is likely to start, will keep. Not very confident with such a bad defence though, I think it's closest to the cheapest I've gone. I usually have defences very cheap too.

I believe its because, there are other options, Lets discuss about his 1.5 AVG PPG. Surely, thats not we want right, I know he has the potential to play OOP for the European champions, but, there sure are other options who could give us more PPG. Now that Terry is back, They've got more defensive personnel in the likes of Cahill, Cole, Luiz, Azpil, Ivanovic who's way above in the pecking order, So, i think choosing Bertrand means we should brace ourselves for 1 points and an occasional surprise CS (IF at all)

        Great reply, I agree.

However the point I'm trying to make is that (Short-Term) It could be beneficial to take a punt on him whilst Chelsea are low on personnel.

He's not competing with Cahill, Cole, Luiz, Azpil, Ivanovic at the moment, he's competing with Marin who had a poor game yesterday.

His 1.5 AVG PPG is mostly down to coming on for the final 15-20 minutes when Chelsea had a full squad.

Actually, I might just avoid this pun now though, the feedback hasn't been great 😀

        Thanks

I actually think Dawson is a good punt, he was rested for the FA cup today which shows you how important he is to the cause and he'll start against Norwich. I think he is seen as a first choice CB now. Might be a little rotation but it's worth the risk for 4.5m if you have cover.

It's sinful that you ask. If you think he will outscore anyone else in that price range then no. Good fixtures coming up, minutes seem his only worry.

shocking performance wasn't it... Stevie G, almost did an Istanbul-esque recovery but I had to laugh...

It cheered me up after watching Leeds dump us out of the cup... You have to love the FA Cup and these upsets.

The little one thus far is the perfect child (touches shit loads of wood) he cries when he is hungry or has a dirty nappy like you would expect but apart from that he is as good as gold... yes I am a bit tired but loving every moment.. the challenge is to keep my 5 year old from getting jealous ATM

He is still a threat from set pieces and crosses and I don't think that will change whatever position he's in but it does worry me if he's back to being a DM because the level of chances he'll get will diminish. He's had 4 shots over the last two (all on target...which explains the baps) but back before his suspension he was getting more like 4/5 a game I think. Sometimes even 6/7+

Don't know. Maybe because I checked the " Would you like to be notified of responses to this comment?" check-box in the second post.

That front 8 looks tasty, but you will be leaving points on the bench, imo.

Looks generic, like mine. I chose to downgrade Lambert, to allow for easier swaps later. I went with Sturridge over Dzeko. City forwards seem like too much of a rotation risk to me. Looks good.

going with Aguero up front gives me Benchy Mc Bencherson* in mid and Zabaleta over Nastasic.

I like Lambert so I think I'll keep, had since week 1 and his career goal rate of 1 goal every 2.2 games is steady unchanged in the big league.

If you guys see a cow asking for WC advice, make sure you tell him to bring in Torres, Sigurdsson, and Phil Neville in his squad. I need another win in La Liga. 😀
