Scouting The Doubles

Scouting the Doubles – Liverpool

Back-to-back home clashes against West Brom and Swansea in the upcoming Gameweek have already earned Liverpool’s Fantasy assets significant investment. As mentioned in last night’s Digest, though, the following week’s blank also plays a part in our transfer policies prior to this Saturday’s deadline – load up on too many Liverpool and Swansea players and you’re left with a depleted squad for Gameweek 27, potentially facing points hits in order to field a starting XI. While Fantasy managers contemplate their tactics, we run the rule over the Reds:

The Prospects

Brendan Rodgers’ side prepare for the double Gameweek with the best home defensive record in the Premier League. Having conceded six goals in their first three games at Anfield, with City, Arsenal and United all notching twice, Liverpool have subsequently shipped just four goals in the following nine, with seven clean sheets accrued along the way. Their last six home games have harvested three or more goals on four occasions for the hosts – offering plenty potential at both ends of the pitch, then.

The Baggies arrive on Merseyside next Monday evening in dire away form – Steve Clarke’s side have lost five of their last six on the road and conceded two or more in all of those defeats. They have failed to score twice in that run, away to Arsenal and United and have notched once at Swansea and Everton – of the two fixtures, this certainly looks the most appetising in terms of goals for Liverpool.

Swansea look a tougher nut to crack. With just 10 goals conceded in 13 games on their travels, Michael Laudrup’s side are joint-top along with City for best away defence. The Swans have shipped just three goals in their last six away matches, producing three clean sheets, but have scored in only one of those six fixtures – suggesting that, while they may limit Liverpool’s attacking potential, they may struggle to break down the Reds’ rearguard.

The Likely Lads

Pepe Reina appears on the radar mainly due to the blank Gameweek 27. With the Spaniard on board, you could have five players for the double, subbing one out with your free transfer to leave the remaining four on the bench for Gameweek 27 – given there are doubts over Michel Vorm’s fitness for Swansea, Reina seems the safest keeper option, thus utilising all of your squad over the upcoming two Gameweeks.

Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique offer the best potential of points at both ends of the pitch. The full-backs have produced a goal and four assists apiece thus far, with Enrique slightly edging it by six bonus points to five. Having recently returned from a hamstring injury, Enrique made his first start since Gameweek 20 at City last weekend and although he was subbed off on 74 minutes, this was purely down to stamina issues as he continues to build up his match fitness. Having returned 4.2 points per game to Johnson’s 3.9 (albeit with a couple of appearances up front) Enrique’s kinder Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag of 5.7 to 6.4 could sway many.

After a couple of lacklustre campaigns, Steven Gerrard has returned to Fantasy form of old with a series of outstanding displays taking him to second in the FPL midfield standings. The Reds’ skipper has now scored or assisted in 10 of the last 12 Gameweeks; a clear sign of his consistency heading into the double. Gerrard has returned three goals, four assists and seven bonus points in his last four home matches and with spot-kick duties, in addition to a share of set-pieces and corners, an ownership of 10% is climbing steadily now.

Second top scoring FPL forward, Luis Suarez has also impressed in recent Anfield matches. The Uruguayan has produced four goals, an assist and eight bonus points over his last three home fixtures and is the most popular Liverpool player by some margin, with over 34% Fantasy managers already snapping him up. While Gerrard offers a viable armband alternative, a big Gameweek for Suarez could prove problematic for those who choose to overlook him, given his superior ownership. Despite a recent change in role, Suarez still seems to be delivering – he has scored in two of his three starts alongside Daniel Sturridge, either from the left in a 4-3-3 or in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1.

The January move from Chelsea has had an immediate impact on Daniel Sturridge’s Fantasy potential. He’s scored or assisted in all four of his league appearances already, with goals against United and City highlighting his ability to deliver regardless of fixture. Sturridge’s appeal is also boosted by the fact he is cup-tied for Liverpool’s upcoming Europa League games against Zenit St Petersburg – the first leg, in Russia, comes three days after the West Brom game and three days before the Swansea fixture. Coming in at 7.6 in FPL to Suarez’s 10.7, he’s far more budget friendly, providing he shrugs off a thigh problem that has forced him out of England’s midweek friendly with Brazil.

Cheeky Punt

The last few matches have seen Jordan Henderson stake a claim for inclusion after a series of strong displays. The former Sunderland man has started five of the last six and has chipped in with a couple of goals, a pair of assists, four bonus points and two sets of double figures – for 5.3 in FPL, he’s proven decent value for money of late.

Stewart Downing has seemingly cemented a regular role under Rodgers over the past few months. While the likes of Raheem Sterling drift slightly out the picture, Downing has now started each of the last 10 and has produced attacking points in two of his last three home fixtures. Like Henderson, a modest price tag of 5.7 may appeal to those struggling to free up cash for big-hitters.

Evening all! Would appreciate some FT advice:

Got 2FTs and 0.6m in the bank.

    A. Mata -> Gerrard just for one week (feels like madness) then back and maybe Fletcher -> someone.

    B. Fellaini -> Gerrard for one week then back + Azpil -> Hill

    Bego/Bunn
    Zab/Azpil/Davies/Demel/Harte
    Mata/Michu/Walcott/Fellaini/Marveaux
    RvP/Sturridge/Fletcher

    Thoughts?

Can't believe how these pages full up so fast!
How many points can someone claim to catch up to their rival?
With 13gwks to go do you think 70 points is too much?
Bearing in mind it was 14 points I needed each GW and now this has halved due to my last 4gwks.

Anyhow, how's my team for this wk?

    Zabs - Azps - Evra
Gerrard - Bale - Mata - Walcott (Fellaini)

You could definitely catch it up, doubles will come too which will be big moving days

Your team is substantially loaded with talent which should enable you to hoover up points IF you can bench the right player on a regular basis

Hey guys what do u think? 5DWG players, cost me 4pts.

    GW26
    Beggo (Bunn)

GJ Ivan B DAVIES (Stam) (Bertrand)

    Theo Walters MICHU Bale (Guthrie)

    Rvp SUAREZ STURRIDGE

    THEN GW27
    Sell GJ Bertrand Suarez
For Baines Samba/ or other 5.0m def, Cisse/Lambert/Dzeko 8pt hit.

12pt hit spread over 2 GW's but i reckon Liv/Swans players will get me 40/50pts.

Too much IMO if you are taking 4 pts this week I assume you already have 3 dgwers.

If that's the case you are getting 2 more in for a total of -12 (+ 1 FT)

4 fixtures starting at -3 each you would need 5+ for each player per game just to break even! Not to mention value shifting players around.

Go with one of the 2 you want to bring in for just a total 4 pt hit and it is much more likely to be good business IMO!

Double GW talk. Everyone are talking (Granville mainly) that having 5 is foolish cause u will have to make a hit next week. That is -4 and - 4 = -8 hits in order to have 5 double GW players and 11 next week. Well that could be true but think it this way. We are gonna separate it in 2 separate weeks:

GW 26 - You make the hit. U have 5 Liv players meaning u star with - 4. Well actually that theoretically is not true. The extra double GW player u get will get 4 pts at least for playing meaning that is -2pt hit. Also the double GW player has twice as many options to get u pts.

GW 27 - The first option u have only 4 players in double GW and doing one FT in order to get first 11. Ok the safe one fair play. But what if u have 5 double GW players? That means additional hit is again - 2pt, cause u r gonna play with 10 players anyway. The extra player will get u 2pts at least. Another if u careful enough some player in example Sissoko could be pts bonanza,. Isn't the reason that we playing this game? For transferring in the right player?

    * What if u decide with 10 players in GW 27? It isn't the end of the world no? As one the owner of the site said: "Its not that important how many players u have, the more important is do u have the right ones"? In GW 27 City and Chelsea are playing one against each other and we are already full of Ars players against Villa due to the previous double. Almost everyone has RVP and beside Rooney I don't see anyone who could do damage even if u play with 10 players. It isn't end of the world.

Three players (or 2) that I want could rise tonight, so the time to make the decision has come. I think i will make the 5 double GW players option. Thoughts? What are everyone doing? Any loopholes in the plan?

P.S. I think the temptation to hold on Liv players and bench them in GW 27 and leave them for the wonderful fixtures after and assured GW 29 could not be ignored too.

    Thank u in advance.

      tl:dr

For me having 5 is only foolish if it involves getting a player in for a hit, and then doing an exact reverse transfer for another hit.

      Walcott ➡ Gerrard (-4)

      Followed by

      Gerrard ➡ Walcott (-4)

      This would be silly

But what if one hit is Demel out for GJ? I will have 10 players anyway because Demel won't play in GW 27. Its better to make the hit now when there is a double that do it in a single week.

Hits in double GW are actually 2pt hit like in UCL fantasy. And we all know there it is so profitable making hits.

If you cant put up 11 this gw then that changes things but I imagine you have other defenders to field instead of Demel right? In that case it is still an 8 point to have a player one extra game - madness!

No, he needs to outscore Demel by 8 points. So, if Demel gets 0 points, new player needs 8 points. If Demel gets 2 points, new player needs 10 points.

      I'm going with 6 dgwers.

But your logic is nonsense. The two outcomes are linked. If you take a hit to get a dgw player in, then another to get the same player out again you've taken 8 points to get 3-matches-worth of points, ie "minimum 6" = -2pts. Whereas if you don't do that you have a player play both weeks "minimum 4" for no hit = 4pts

In other words, your "-4 is really -2" idea doesn't work cause you're ignoring the points you'd automatically get from the SGW player if you didn't make the transfer.

Dont quite agree.. ur saying that if u take a hit for a dgw in gw 26, he starts only with -2.. but the player who have been replacing too will have minimum 2 pts.. so basically its -4..Now if for example the player u are replacing to get Gerrard as a 5th dgw is Walcott, Fellaini or Bale then u must also take into consideration his points for gw27 that he is sure to play.. So its 8 pts+ wahtever Bale, Walcott or Fellaini get Gw 26 and GW27

people are thinking too hard about this...Go with 3 players and you play 11 +3 + 11 chances to scoe poits over two gameweeks.....but play the rubbish on your bench in the second GW....Play with five and you get 11 + 5 + 9 +1FT...making 26 opportunities to score points over the two gameweeks...Even though it seems crazy to field 9 in the second GW you are actually playing more players over the two weeks...The downside is the injury risk...The upside is that if it goes well (and i suspect it will) use 4 or 8 points of your winnings to field 11 on the second GW.....Don't get obsessed by the idea that you must field 11 on the second week...

Although you are right about shifting player from GW27 to GW26, I see an issue.

When the maximum numbers of players you can field is 10 or 11, it leaves you vulnerable to fielding 9 or 10 players or less.

Also you are putting lots of eggs into one basket.

        1) If you don't have enough players for GW26 and it's a bonanza, then you are screwed for GW26 but have a 2nd chance GW27
        2) If you do have enough players and the Liverpool Swansea game is 1-1 or some other unfavourable result then you’re screwed for GW26 and GW27.

The injury problem is a biggie...as is the fact that just because somebody plays eleven in the second week doesn't mean they are good players...For some that will be Pearce Demel and Marveaux..something like that...It all comes down to wether you fancy the two home fixtures enough for liverpool who are in good form and scoring well...If you achieve 80-100 points in the first week then any repairs can be done in the second week to field a decent side should you get injuries...The nightmare is two 0-0 draws for Liverpool...or losing one to nil...

    Rooney+RVP debate -> Done a little reserach to see whether or not RVP or Rooney is affected negatively with the other player on the pitch, and what their average is together;

    GW with RVP+Roo together; GW 7,8,9,10,11,13,14,15,16,17,18,24,25 = 13 games
I've exluded a few games when Roo/RVP was cameo due to injury, and when Rooney was injured obviously.

    Points in the GW's above - ROO; 11,14,1,2,2,6,2,16,12,7,1,13,8 = 95p, 7.3ppg with RVP / 6ppg overall
    Points in the GW's above - RVP; 4,11,12,8,5,2,9,6,6,12,4,2,5 = 85p, 6.6ppg with ROO / 6.8ppg overall

Suggests they average 13.9ppg together, 6.95 ppg each when together. Obviously Rooney is great value here, but a couple of his goals are penalties which he now has turned over to RVP. If you can afford it you can easily combine them in your attack.
