Scouting The Doubles

Scouting the Doubles – Liverpool

Back-to-back home clashes against West Brom and Swansea in the upcoming Gameweek have already earned Liverpool’s Fantasy assets significant investment. As mentioned in last night’s Digest, though, the following week’s blank also plays a part in our transfer policies prior to this Saturday’s deadline – load up on too many Liverpool and Swansea players and you’re left with a depleted squad for Gameweek 27, potentially facing points hits in order to field a starting XI. While Fantasy managers contemplate their tactics, we run the rule over the Reds:

The Prospects

Brendan Rodgers’ side prepare for the double Gameweek with the best home defensive record in the Premier League. Having conceded six goals in their first three games at Anfield, with City, Arsenal and United all notching twice, Liverpool have subsequently shipped just four goals in the following nine, with seven clean sheets accrued along the way. Their last six home games have harvested three or more goals on four occasions for the hosts – offering plenty potential at both ends of the pitch, then.

The Baggies arrive on Merseyside next Monday evening in dire away form – Steve Clarke’s side have lost five of their last six on the road and conceded two or more in all of those defeats. They have failed to score twice in that run, away to Arsenal and United and have notched once at Swansea and Everton – of the two fixtures, this certainly looks the most appetising in terms of goals for Liverpool.

Swansea look a tougher nut to crack. With just 10 goals conceded in 13 games on their travels, Michael Laudrup’s side are joint-top along with City for best away defence. The Swans have shipped just three goals in their last six away matches, producing three clean sheets, but have scored in only one of those six fixtures – suggesting that, while they may limit Liverpool’s attacking potential, they may struggle to break down the Reds’ rearguard.

The Likely Lads

Pepe Reina appears on the radar mainly due to the blank Gameweek 27. With the Spaniard on board, you could have five players for the double, subbing one out with your free transfer to leave the remaining four on the bench for Gameweek 27 – given there are doubts over Michel Vorm’s fitness for Swansea, Reina seems the safest keeper option, thus utilising all of your squad over the upcoming two Gameweeks.

Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique offer the best potential of points at both ends of the pitch. The full-backs have produced a goal and four assists apiece thus far, with Enrique slightly edging it by six bonus points to five. Having recently returned from a hamstring injury, Enrique made his first start since Gameweek 20 at City last weekend and although he was subbed off on 74 minutes, this was purely down to stamina issues as he continues to build up his match fitness. Having returned 4.2 points per game to Johnson’s 3.9 (albeit with a couple of appearances up front) Enrique’s kinder Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag of 5.7 to 6.4 could sway many.

After a couple of lacklustre campaigns, Steven Gerrard has returned to Fantasy form of old with a series of outstanding displays taking him to second in the FPL midfield standings. The Reds’ skipper has now scored or assisted in 10 of the last 12 Gameweeks; a clear sign of his consistency heading into the double. Gerrard has returned three goals, four assists and seven bonus points in his last four home matches and with spot-kick duties, in addition to a share of set-pieces and corners, an ownership of 10% is climbing steadily now.

Second top scoring FPL forward, Luis Suarez has also impressed in recent Anfield matches. The Uruguayan has produced four goals, an assist and eight bonus points over his last three home fixtures and is the most popular Liverpool player by some margin, with over 34% Fantasy managers already snapping him up. While Gerrard offers a viable armband alternative, a big Gameweek for Suarez could prove problematic for those who choose to overlook him, given his superior ownership. Despite a recent change in role, Suarez still seems to be delivering – he has scored in two of his three starts alongside Daniel Sturridge, either from the left in a 4-3-3 or in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1.

The January move from Chelsea has had an immediate impact on Daniel Sturridge’s Fantasy potential. He’s scored or assisted in all four of his league appearances already, with goals against United and City highlighting his ability to deliver regardless of fixture. Sturridge’s appeal is also boosted by the fact he is cup-tied for Liverpool’s upcoming Europa League games against Zenit St Petersburg – the first leg, in Russia, comes three days after the West Brom game and three days before the Swansea fixture. Coming in at 7.6 in FPL to Suarez’s 10.7, he’s far more budget friendly, providing he shrugs off a thigh problem that has forced him out of England’s midweek friendly with Brazil.

Cheeky Punt

The last few matches have seen Jordan Henderson stake a claim for inclusion after a series of strong displays. The former Sunderland man has started five of the last six and has chipped in with a couple of goals, a pair of assists, four bonus points and two sets of double figures – for 5.3 in FPL, he’s proven decent value for money of late.

Stewart Downing has seemingly cemented a regular role under Rodgers over the past few months. While the likes of Raheem Sterling drift slightly out the picture, Downing has now started each of the last 10 and has produced attacking points in two of his last three home fixtures. Like Henderson, a modest price tag of 5.7 may appeal to those struggling to free up cash for big-hitters.

Question for the ones going without RVP.

Is this frontline the best to go with when you don't have RVP?

Playing CAM in the 4231 for us.

Best comparison to position use/ playing style is Yaya when Mancini moves him forward when City aren’t winning at 60odd mins. Obviously he’s not as good as Yaya, but he looks a good FPL prospect in that role.

Likely to stay there rather than play in the 2 as we have Cabaye, Tiote, Anita, Perch + others who can play in the 2 more defensive roles. Only way he won't play CAM is if Pardew decides he wants to play HBA central as he has done sometimes. Can't see it happening though, Sissoko looks like he's there to stay.

Davies, Gerrard(c) & Sturridge for me. Kind of glad I don't already own Michu at this point. From the sounds of it a lot of people can't wait to offload him if he fails in the double. My only fear is that every man and his dog will have Suarez as captain. Secretly I believe Sturridge will have quite a large negative impact on Suarez' FPL return. At least I hope that translates into a modest return over the two games. Say 10 points. I'd back Stevie to beat that.

It worth to get Gerrard and get rid of mata ?? with a hit

so should keep mata ? and not get gerrad , right ?

For people that didnt see -
The teams that could possibly have a blank gw29 due to cup fixtures are Arsenal, Everton, Man City, United or Reading, Chelsea, Wigan.

All teams are likely to win apart from Reading.

    This means that the only fixtures going ahead in gw29 could be;

    Newcastle v Stoke
    Norwich v Southampton
    QPR v Sunderland
    Reading v Villa
    WBA v Swansea
    Liverpool v Tottenham

    Get stocked up!

Btw, does anyone know when the Westham v United, Arsenal v Everton, City v Wigan and Fulham v Chelsea games will be re-arranged for?
This gameweek will be the double gameweek?

It's possible, depending on when they re-arrange the games for. When I've suggested seems the most logical seeing as I don't think there's any more free Saturdays.

Tbh, planning for a DGW which might or might not happen seems a bit silly imo. You'd look pretty stupid if you went without a load of top players coz there was potential for a blank at some point.

Why all this love for Sissoko? I follow Ligue 1 as I live in France and trust me he isn't the type of player you want in a fantasy team. He mostly plays deep and rarely scores. Although I wish he does, I don't think he is going to continue and score for Newcastle.

Playing CAM in the 4231 for us.

Best comparison to position use/ playing style is Yaya when Mancini moves him forward when City aren't winning at 60odd mins. Obviously he's not as good as Yaya, but he looks a good FPL prospect in that role.

IMO Marveaux's position is under threat returning from injury, do you think he'll come back in?

I'm wondering whether there might be a little rotation involved - certainly the players we're talking about are pretty interchangeable in the current system so it's beyond me to predict a settled starting line up.

I agree with Cabaye4 on the main point though - Sissoko to stay as an attacking player for the foreseeable.

That Chelsea game was his best game since the beginning of the season and probably of his career. He will not play like that for the rest of the season imo. He will soon be moved down deeper and probably be associated with Tiote.

You said yourself it was his best game this season & possibly career.
"He will be moved down deeper" ...again, why would Pardew do that? Tiote, a defensive midfielder, is coming back soon. That would keep him at CAM rather than push him back.

I just cannot see Sissoko continue scoring at each game. That was a one off. He will slowly draw blanks and Pardew will play him at his natural position. There is a reason he has never really played CAM with Toulouse before and it is not as if Toulouse have amazing CAMs pushing him back.

He played there against Aston Villa too.

Okay if there was a reason what was it? Or perhaps the reason was they didnt notice his potential to move further up the pitch, whereas Graham Caar did?

I say just go with A. Get more than 1 more DGW player in and you have to take a hit next week as well, maybe more if someone gets injured. And I'd go A over B because you might as well pay that extra .7 for Enrique's attacking threat. Two games means twice as likely to give you a goal or assist.

This is my team at the moment…Got 2FTs to field XI in GW27….

    Begovic

    Enrique* – Davies* – Demel

    Bale – Mata – Michu* – Walcott

    RVP – Suarez* (C) – Sturridge* (VC)

Subs: Federici – Puncheon – Jones – Clyne

    Is this a good plan?

    For GW27: Enrique + Michu + Suarez -> Zabaleta + Fellaini + Aguero (-4)

Worth takin a hit to get Sturridge in tonight? if i wait that 0.1 loss will mean i'll have to get Enrique instead of GJ for this week(just a one week punt b4 i get Zabaleta next week).. Does GJ have that big an upside over Enrique?

No he dosent, and why leave yourself with zero to play with?
Get Enrique and pocket the .7 might come in useful , Enrique at a much more keepable price

I wouldn't sweat about enrique or johnson for just a week...enrique has plenty of attacking output.

Having the concern myself about whether Sturridge is too cheap not to have...
