Scout Notes – Gameweek 26 – Monday

Filed under: Scout Notes - Posted by: Paul

Liverpool fall flat in the first match of their double Gameweek after a smash-and-grab performance by West Brom at Anfield. Steven Gerrard misses a spot-kick, while Daniel Sturridge misses out entirely in a night to forget for the home side and Fantasy managers alike. Elsewhere, Hatem Ben Arfa could be set to return for Newcastle’s next league game, while Michu plays down fears of an ankle problem and insists he’ll be ready for next weekend.

Reds Attack Draws Blanks
With Daniel Sturridge ruled out with a thigh injury, Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez carried the hopes of many heading into last night’s match. Gerrard had been acquired by over 160,000 Fantasy managers after scoring or assisting in 10 of his previous 12 and had racked up 45 points in his last four at Anfield. Suarez had been picked up by more than 146,000 after racking up 33 points in his last three home clashes – with both players transferred in for the likes of Gareth Bale and Robin Van Persie by many, plenty was riding on their displays. Gerrard fluffed the chance of producing points for both, missing a spot-kick late on after Suarez was felled in the box; a double blow for those who had both and left Gerrard without a single point. Fantasy owners of the pair can only take solace in their abovementioned form and hope the weekend won’t bring about another dire display in a double Gameweek that has the potential to go down as one of the biggest disappointments in memory.

Reds Defence Capitulates
Again, the same applies to Brendan Rodgers’ backline. Liverpool were subject to significant investment going into the weekend and with every reason, too – they had conceded four goals and registered seven clean sheets in their previous seven games at Anfield. With 10 minutes left on the clock, their backline looked like affording us the one crumb of comfort; Steve Clarke’s side didn’t have a single shot on target until Gareth McAuley opened the scoring with nine minutes remaining. Owners of the likes of Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique will be buoyed by the fact that Swansea have failed to score in five of their last six away matches, though given last night’s result, we clearly won’t be counting our chickens.

Baggies Resilience
With a single clean sheet in their previous 15, it’s fair to say that Fantasy faith in West Brom’s assets was hardly sky-high heading into last night’s match. Given that all five of their clean sheets had arrived at the Hawthorns, Clarke’s outfit seemed incapable of keeping out the Reds but thanks to the heroics of Ben Foster, they registered a crucial win to arrest a run of form which had harvested a single point in the previous six Gameweeks. While Foster’s spot-kick save and two bonus points helped deliver a 14 point FPL haul, Gareth McAuley’s second goal of the season earned the centre-half 15 points as the Baggies turned in a defiant display. With home games against Sunderland and Swansea in the next three, they’ll be hoping to maintain their winning ways.

Lukaku’s Consistency
A run of five straight starts came to an end for the giant Belgian as he dropped to the bench, with fit-again Shane Long leading the line once more. Lukaku highlighted his capabilities as a late sub, though, notching for the third time from the bench this season to take his tally to 10 goals overall. Lukaku has now scored or assisted in five of the last six, despite his side’s recent toils – although last night’s 17 minute cameo served a reminder of his potential for points from the bench, Lukaku has been far more reliable as part of the first XI. He has produced attacking returns in eight of his 11 starts – Long has produced in eight of his 17 starts by comparison.

In Other News
Newcastle are hoping to have both Yoan Gouffran and Hatem Ben Arfa back in contention for their Gameweek 27 home clash with Southampton on February 24. Scans on the former’s leg problem, sustained in the weekend loss at Spurs, have proved particularly optimistic, while his compatriot could also be set for a return, having played once since Gameweek 12 due to a hamstring injury. Speaking to the press yesterday, Alan Pardew revealed:

“You’d like to think with him (Gouffran) on one side, Ben Arfa on the other side and Sissoko and Cissé – blimey, that’s mouthwatering for us. I think there’s a possibility Hatem will be back for the next home game.”

Judging by Pardew’s comments, it also seems he plans to keeps Sissoko in the advanced central role that has harvested two assists and a couple of goals in his first three appearances. With a hugely enticing run of fixtures on the horizon including home games against Southampton, Stoke, Fulham and Sunderland in the next eight, plenty of investment looks to be heading the Magpies’ way, with yesterday’s news merely boosting their potential as Pardew looks to engineer a climb up the table.

Michu has played down any fears over the ankle knock that forced him off towards the end of last weekend’s 4-1 win over QPR:

“I am feeling good right now. I had problems Monday, Tuesday and did not train – but I trained the rest of the week and was OK to play. I felt fine in the game but then with 10 minutes left I had a bang on my ankle. The game was finished so I asked to come off. There’s no problem it was just a precaution. It will not be a problem especially with Dubai to look forward to with good weather and a lot of sun; it will be good to relax, to train and to think about Liverpool and Wembley.”

With another five days before Swansea’s trip to Anfield, the Spaniard certainly has plenty of time to recuperate before another week-long rest take him to the Capital One Cup Final against Bradford. Given Liverpool’s display last night, his Fantasy owners will be confident of further points to come in the Gameweek as Michu looks to add to his current 18 point tally next Sunday afternoon.

  1. Is Sissoko eligible to play in the Europa League for Newcastle? Could do with knowing his chances of injury before the inevitable price rise before the next GW.

    1. Yep, he's in the squad.

      1. Cheers. Next question - any non-owners looking to get him in now before the price rise?

        1. I have other transfer priorities so I'm not, can't speak for others though :)

    2. Of the new additions Massadio Haidara, Moussa Sissoko and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa got added to the Europa league squad list.

Goufran is cup-tied and Debuchy wasn't added (you're limited to 3 new players)

    3. i already got him and bale in...before the price rise....with 10 days to go before te next deadline....prices will rise manifold

  2. The team is-
    Bego, Bunn
    Davies, Harte, Dawson, Clichy, Demel
    Bale, Mata, Fellaini, Walcott, Guthrie
    Rvp, Sturridge, Suarez

Should i do Suarez, Guthrie > Giroud, Sissoko for -4pts and play 4-5-2 for gw 27?

    1. *3-5-2

    1. FCL, anyone?

  3. Care to comment on my team (ranked 448, need a bit of luck to take me to the top)

    Helton - Weidenfeller

    Vidal - Alex - Mulgreew - Dante - Nounkeu

    Reus - Isco - Kroos - Fegoulli - Walcott

    RVP - Messi - Ibra

    1. Very, very, very (and I mean very) nice!
      Great balance in that side.

Now on the verge of ripping mine up and starting again!

      1. However - no sign of Mulgrew in the weekend fixture. Not sure is rested or injured?
Might be worth checking on that one.

        1. Yes, thank god we see lineups for today before deadline.

    2. I don't know if Nounkeu is nailed on...maybe Nounkeu->Demichelis???

      1. Cheers, will look into that. I just want some def cover for day 4, if anything goes wrong. So preferably someone from Galatasharay.

        1. I'm going with Nounkeu - I'm a little hazy, but he appears to have been playing CL games regularly.

        2. If you want some def cover from Galata maybe eboue 4.5m???

  4. Guys, who is the best forward option, apart from van Persie, for the next 4 gameweeks, presuming Arsenal - Everton in GW 29 will be postponed? Must be 9,5 or cheaper.

    1. Lambert or Benteke maybe Dzeko

      1. Any thoughts on Papiss Cisse?

        1. Even with the new attacking players i think he isn't worth it

          1. I have to catch the leader in my mini league. He's got Lambert and I need to find a proper differential for the next 4 gameweeks. After that I am bringing Giroud in.

  5. Nice to see Anorak helping us out with UCL FF.

    1. My pleasure. The more UCL chat, the more help I get with my own side!

    2. Yep. Brilliant! :-)

  6. Alright guys, how does this look?

    Sirigu / Helton
Vidal / Hummels / Demichelis / Jordi Alba / Howdes
Pirlo / Menez / Reus / Lucho Gonzalez / Kroos
    Ronaldo / Yilmaz / Messi

    Cheers

    1. is Eliseu injured?

      1. Yeah.
Anorak said that he'll miss out for 3 months

      2. Yes - knee ligaments. Gone for up to 3 months. Possibly a season ender.

      3. Thank you Messi & ANORAK

  7. Jonah just checked a few teams above me. I'd say 15% of the teams have their WC available. 85% have played me.

A very potent weapon. Think i'll try scaping through.

    Thanks.

    1. have played it*

      1. Save for the MEGA

Or an end of season push

        1. Great. Thanks.

    2. Hold your thanks 'til it works I reckon ;-)

  8. how nailed on is apilzi?

considering to go with Evans,Zabaleta and him as my back 3

untill my wc i had all 4M defenders and since i switched strategy to 3-5-2 i got enought money to buy expesive defenders

    1. Azpil, Zab and JEvans are THE main players in defence imo

    2. You got a mention in my presser :D

Azpi is nailed on imo. As nailed on as a Rafa Benitez player can be.

      1. where i can see your presser :D ?

          1. haha so funny

i wouldn't be suprised if christina actually do that :D

    3. Pretty nailed on imo apart from the odd rest / rotation

  9. Any Juventus fans here? I noticed Asamoah hasn't been in recent squads. Is he injured or being left out?

    1. I think he was at ACON?

      1. Yep, played for Ghana

      2. Doos, Alex Sandro back in your team ;)

      3. Just read he was ACON bound with Ghana. Cheers mate.

  10. A new Discussion- I have no idea why Lambert still not get a chance to play for England team. And may be even A Le fondre.

    1. Wasn't ALF voted 'Player of the Month'? Quite an acheivement for mostly coming off the bench.

  11. when people will start considering players from team wich fight for survivor?

benkete, maloney, harte could be nice picks untill end of the season

    1. I agree. I think i'll get Benteke in this week

  12. What is your total score and current rank in the CL Fantasy?

Trying to decide if I should bother playing it.

    328 and 25k here.

    1. 5215 with 360 points

    2. 372 and 2646

    3. 395.... 523th place

    4. i am in top 10,000 but think i will give up. be very few differentials to make up points, and the captain system means harder to make progress from those points

  13. Alaba POO but on pens, could be worth it. Scored a brace at the weekend...

      1. He plays in defence, listed as a mid in UCL :(

  14. Suarez, Guthrie > Giroud, Sissoko for -4pts?

  15. LateRiser12 - I think it is excellent!!!

    1. Thank you sir. :D
Outta here now. Dinner plans. Ta.

  16. Any suggestions for GW26? I'm thinking Suarez, Davies > Sissoko, Fabio..

    1. a striker to a mideilder, that's clever!!

  17. Ok so UCL Fantasy first timer. Pretty clueless regarding the players

    RMT?

    Helton | Unnerstall
Vidal JordiAlba Lustig | AlexSandro Dante
Iniesta Reus Isco Walcott | Menez
    Messi Ibra Yilmaz

  18. Hey guys, hope everyones well. Just need a bit of advice on transfer to make this week as I think it could set me up very nicely for the rest of the season. My mate is definitely taking a minus 8 hit this week which gives me a bit of leeway as I already have two frees. What do you guys think of Johnson, Demel, Kakankilic > Santon, Sagna, Kebe

    1. If you can field 11 and keep johnson, keep him, not sure about sagna either due to arsenal poor defence. Santon could be a good shout though!

  19. Azp or Jonny Evans?

  20. Test

“I love to attack and I love to go up front...It is a little more difficult than when you are playing centre-back. If you play the way that I want to play, I think my influence is better as a left-back. For the team, it is best that I play as a centre-back. I like to bring the ball out. You need to move the game quickly, and that is one of my qualities as well.”
