Watchlist

The Watchlist – Jonny Evans

It’s not been the most straightforward of seasons for United’s Jonny Evans. Four times the centre-half has been sidelined now, with ankle, leg, groin and hamstring problems curtailing his game time over the course of the campaign – as a result, the most he’s managed is six consecutive league starts thus far.

Nevertheless, Evans’ presence in the United back-four has been significant. The league leaders have managed one clean sheet in the 10 games without the Northern Ireland international in their first XI – with Evans in the starting line-up, they have registered five clean sheets in 16 games by comparison.

Factor in three goals, a pair of assists and nine Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points and Evans has racked up 81 points – an average of 4.8 points per game, which is exactly the same as Patrice Evra and superior to Rafael’s 4.1. Indeed, this is joint-top for regular defenders overall, equalling Jose Enrique, with the likes of Leighton Baines and Branislav Ivanovic just behind on 4.6 and 4.4 respectively.

Providing he can now remain injury-free, Evans looks set to be key to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side over the remainder of the season. Over the last few days, the United boss has lavished praise upon the centre-half and suggested Evans’ game will continue to develop with the aid of regular appearances. Ferguson hinted that a fully-fit Evans is likely to afford him the chance to alternate Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at centre-half as United also juggle FA Cup and Champions League commitments.

“Jonny is only 25 but he’s emerged in the last year as a real top defender. His form has been fantastic. If you can get consistency off young players you are on the right track and Jonny has shown great consistency in the last year. Last season it wasn’t until Ferdinand and Evans played regularly that we got a run going.”

Considering United’s midfield have failed to step up as Fantasy options this season, investment in defence could well appeal ahead of a run of games which affords the chance to consolidate their 12 point lead at the summit. Norwich and Reading roll up to Old Trafford over the next five and with trips to QPR, West Ham and Sunderland also on their agenda, faith in their Fantasy assets could extend beyond their free-scoring frontmen.

Coming in at 5.6 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, Evans is significantly cheaper than Evra’s 7.3 in FPL and also sets you back less than Rafael, at 6.0. An ownership of 1% offers a real differential route into a backline that has now registered four back-to-back clean sheets with the centre-half in their ranks – an indication of just why Ferguson sees Evans’ contribution as crucial to his side’s chances of wrestling back the title from City.

            Marc Wilson is averaging almost twice the amount of shots and key passes per game than Evans. Of course most of them come from outside the box so have less potential but it is still not irrelevant. And he is a huge upgrade over Wilkinson so that would help out their defensive potential as well. There could be a bit too much attention, but no way is he a bad option when he finally returns this week or the next. Especially considering the fixtures for Stoke.

                Evans 1 goal and 3 assists in past 5 seasons before this one. Also take a look at scoring potential for Stoke before this season, and Marc wilsons shot volume before this season, clearly more attacking. And even if he scores 0 attacking points he will still be great value at 3.9.

    Looks like Suarez might fall tonight then - means I'll have to act now if doing a) below. Best option in order to field 11 this week?

    a) Enrique & Suarez -> JEvans & Aguero (has to be before Suarez falls, i.e. today/tomorrow)
    b) Davies/Demel & Suarez -> Wilson & Aguero
    c) Something else

    Szczesny
    Turner, Harte, Demel
    Bale, Mata, Walcott, Fellaini
    RVP

    Bunn, Suarez*, Sturridge*, Enrique*, Davies*

    I have a question fellas.

    I want to get Aguero this week, but if I do it would probably (unless Demel plays) mean starting only 10 players.

    Would you get Aguero now, or sort your defence out and make sure you have 11 players this week?

    Good afternoon everyone. Looking for some advice here if you would be so kind as to assist I would forever grateful 🙂

    A. Sturridge -> Cisse (-4)

    B. Sturridge -> Giroud (-4)

    C. Johnson -> Evans (-4)

    D. Don't take a hit and field 10. Pog & Demel been included in that 10

    E. Wildcard. Slightly against this myself but said i'd throw it in if people were edging towards that.

    Papiss Cissé (SOU,swa,STK,wig)

          It's tough - you reach a point when you think you are going well and feel confident and then suddenly two relatively poor weeks and you fall quickly. To retain your position you need higher scores at the business end and your captain is key.

              104, so not too far off people's scores but still enough to keep me wondering what if (took no hits, taking none this coming week)

      Wish I had have thought of Mata > Gerrard last week instead of Bale > Gerrard.

      My thoughts are don't do it. When both players are 100% fit, in good form, and capable of good scores in any game it isn't really worth switching. Lesson learned for me.

      No offence but why are people making early transfers? Unless it's a matter of urgency (price rises/falls) then there's no excuse for not waiting until Friday to hear injury news etc. This week of all weeks is one you should be patient for. If you get a late injury it would change all your plans and you might regret the early transfer.

      Thank you for listening.

        I've got three out plus two who may as well be (Demel/KJones) so had nothing to lose by swapping Suarez to Lambert and enjoying his price rise.

        I'd always planned to take a hit this week to sort out the KJones shaped mess in my front line but agree its good to be patient and I'll await Friday night for my next move as I have no wiggle room at all if there are any injuries.

        If a mid gets injured I'll get Sissoko...if not I'll resume my Benteke or Cisse for KJones debate on Friday night.

            I needed a cheap striker who I was happy to bench most weeks and at the time he was the top choice to lead the line at Stoke, who had good fixtures anyway just in case. He also up until then had great home form....but that was then and this is now and sadly it now looks pretty darn foolish.

            Also part of me likes to take at least one off piste player every now and again. Does pay off sometimes. Remember Sidibe...another cheap Stoke player...I got him in for his one and only pts run a few seasons back and I look back at that time with great fondness.

        I think the obviousness of the Liverpool/Swansea blank is making it easier to do an early transfer - not that I've done mine yet. But I wouldn't have thought that a late injury to one of my other players is going to stop me transferring out a high value Liverpool player.

          I was all set to keep Studge, but now thinking I'll keep Saurez and sell Studge along with Fellaini or Cazorla to fund Bale in...

          Confused...

          I might do a one week punt on Studge>Dzeko to get 11 out, then review it next week with two frees still. 🙂

      Alot of talk about DGW and the hits needed to recover. It's like this.
      Most people that loaded up scored big.
      4, 8 or even 12 pt hits are not going to break the bank considering the guy you are getting in is guaranteed to get you more than the Lpool/Swansea player you have that's doing nothing for you.
      ie: It's not really a 4 pt hit, it's a 2 pt hit.
      Also if you are buying 2 or 3 players then you have a choice of who you want as opposed to being stuck with the players you had pre DGW.
      If you are buying 2 or 3 players and can't pick 1 or 2 that will score more than 8/12 points combined then you probably shouldn't be playing the game!
      Rant Over
      Learning Outcome: TAKE HITS FOR DGW 🙂

          It's not in depth, just saying that if you have a choice of who you are getting and have the points in the bag then you are in good shape. For me DGW's offer the best oppurtunity for massive points hauls. Probability n all that jazz.

            But thats just it, points in the bag are points in the bad. Justifying hits for this week based on a high score last week is stupid. Point hits affect the future, so justify them by your predictions for the future rather than basing them on past history.

              I'm justifying hits for ANY DGW. And how is it stupid to base next weeks hits on last weeks score when the two are quite clearly dependant on each other.

                But they are not. This weeks score is not dependant on last weeks score. That is a fact. I agree they may well influence each other, but dependancy is a mighty strong term.

                  They are if you take a hit specifically for that DGW. If you didn't take that hit then you wouldn't need one this week, so they are definitely related.

                  OK, not dependant but without 6 players from Lpool/Swansea it was unlikely to have a big (100+) haul. A haul next week will be INFLUENCED by the number of hits and players selected, However w/o the hits there would be NO mega haul. That's my point!

            We got lucky Laudrup put up that team... we could also say we got unlucky with Gerrard missing that penalty.. not that I had him, but it changed the game course.

            All points are welcome and I dont believe in spending them just because you´ve got more than you expected.

          I think if you add up the average score between the DGW itself and the week after. I reckon those that invest heavily have a higher 2 week average. id bet on it.

      Team for the coming gw

      DDG
      Pearce Baines Turner Fabio*
      Bale Mata Walcott Sissoko
      Fletcher RvP

      Subs: Fed Michu Davies Sturridge

      Have used my two FT already to bring in Sissoko and Turner for Guthrie and Enrique. Do you think it is worth -4 to do Fabio -> Clyne or should I just play with 10? Thinking no defender under 4.3 will score more than 4 this weekend?

      What do you lads think looks best:

      A) Suarez - Aguero
      B) Johnson - Evans
      C) Suarez - Lukaku and Noble - Bale (-4)

      Begovic, Federici

      Johnson, Zabaleta, Davies, Demel, Shaw

      Mata, Walcott, Michu, Fellaini, Noble

      RVP, Suarez, Lambert

      Got the exact funds for C so would need to act fast before Bale's price goes up again.

      Who's on penalties for Spurs? Feel like they're DUE one. Could it be Bale?

      FFS has Adebayor, Sigurdsson and then Bale. I'd say it's much less likely Adebayor would take them now.
