Watchlist

The Watchlist – Jonny Evans

It’s not been the most straightforward of seasons for United’s Jonny Evans. Four times the centre-half has been sidelined now, with ankle, leg, groin and hamstring problems curtailing his game time over the course of the campaign – as a result, the most he’s managed is six consecutive league starts thus far.

Nevertheless, Evans’ presence in the United back-four has been significant. The league leaders have managed one clean sheet in the 10 games without the Northern Ireland international in their first XI – with Evans in the starting line-up, they have registered five clean sheets in 16 games by comparison.

Factor in three goals, a pair of assists and nine Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points and Evans has racked up 81 points – an average of 4.8 points per game, which is exactly the same as Patrice Evra and superior to Rafael’s 4.1. Indeed, this is joint-top for regular defenders overall, equalling Jose Enrique, with the likes of Leighton Baines and Branislav Ivanovic just behind on 4.6 and 4.4 respectively.

Providing he can now remain injury-free, Evans looks set to be key to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side over the remainder of the season. Over the last few days, the United boss has lavished praise upon the centre-half and suggested Evans’ game will continue to develop with the aid of regular appearances. Ferguson hinted that a fully-fit Evans is likely to afford him the chance to alternate Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at centre-half as United also juggle FA Cup and Champions League commitments.

“Jonny is only 25 but he’s emerged in the last year as a real top defender. His form has been fantastic. If you can get consistency off young players you are on the right track and Jonny has shown great consistency in the last year. Last season it wasn’t until Ferdinand and Evans played regularly that we got a run going.”

Considering United’s midfield have failed to step up as Fantasy options this season, investment in defence could well appeal ahead of a run of games which affords the chance to consolidate their 12 point lead at the summit. Norwich and Reading roll up to Old Trafford over the next five and with trips to QPR, West Ham and Sunderland also on their agenda, faith in their Fantasy assets could extend beyond their free-scoring frontmen.

Coming in at 5.6 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, Evans is significantly cheaper than Evra’s 7.3 in FPL and also sets you back less than Rafael, at 6.0. An ownership of 1% offers a real differential route into a backline that has now registered four back-to-back clean sheets with the centre-half in their ranks – an indication of just why Ferguson sees Evans’ contribution as crucial to his side’s chances of wrestling back the title from City.

Re Jevans above. Did not realize that Jevans points per game were equal to Enrique. Given the fact that Jevans is still somewhat of a rotation risk with FA and CL forthcoming has tipped the scales in favor of Enrique. I think i am going to pass and stick with Enrique.

Am I making sense? Anyone else considering the same?

I went only with Sturridge, Davies and Michu this gw so that I would be able to field 11 players the coming gw. Have two free transfers and hughes and guthrie need to go. But I really don't want to miss the Wilson wagon...! But if I buy him this week and turns out to not play, I would only field 10, and all my planning would go down the drain! what to do? I will wait until Saturdag with my transfers...

Differentials only work if they actually score more points than their more widely owned counterparts.

They do come into play in the last few gameweeks when chasing a ML. If you have the same team as your rival, you're relying on captaincy points alone to close ground.

I don't know if it will be as easy this season. The January transfer hasn't brought the pearls of last year ala Siggurdson, Jelavic and Cisse. My word what a trio of January transfers they were, had all 3 and they saved my season.

A very good point. No guarantees the same luck will flow in either.

You can tell the standard has gone up this year, people are transferring in and out for the DGWs and blanks much more so than last season. I remember people making a whole host of mistakes and us focused-players capitalising with ease.

It'll be harder to get as high as 3K but think 10K is doable with 12 weeks still left to go.

10k is definitely doable but once you're in there it is a nightmare trying to progress. I think if you just stick to your sound decision making you will still progress to that point but beyond that it is about creativity and luck.

Don't know if it's coincidence but people in my ML are definitely more wise to DGWs and blanks this year. Strange.

I'll just keep playing as I have done all year then. If I do happen to get that high and safely in the top 10K I might take a couple risks to chance getting higher without ruining anything.

Currently all 3 people ahead of me in my mini-league have taken an 8 point hit, presumably to field XI this coming week, whereas I have used 2 frees. Things are certainly looking on the sunny side but the leader is just under 100 points clear...we'll see. I still think I can finish 1st and in the top 5K. We shall see.

Good luck with your season, you think you can get top 1K?

This is what I was getting at...in some ways it restricts you to having the template team this week, more than most weeks. Which is why I'm not sure I understand how it opens things up much.

That's true, but we still have about 8 players in everyone's squad.

      Begovic
      Baines
      Bale, Walcott, Mata, Michu
      Van Persie

Still pretty template. Not that much to mix it up with.

It's the 2/3 new players you get in that mix it up. Also, a large number of people don't have Baines and I think a decent number jumped ship on Bego, reducing it to 6.

Nice work with the Serie A win! Still reckon you'll do the business in the ECL and qualify with me from our group.

I'm on somewhat of a tear at the moment in both. 3 wins from 3 in ECL and 7 wins from 7 in the ROE!!

Same here. I'm very tempted to do the Suarez -> Aguero move myself. Problem for me is I'm 0.1m short so need to fund it by either a) Demel -> Wilson, or b) Enrique -> JEvans. Probably not such a bad hit given I have 4 definitely not playing plus Demel and Marveaux in my starting 11 as it stands....

              Whatcha reckon?

A and B are both good long term moves IMO. B is much better this week though though. It comes down to, can you carry Demel in your team a bit longer?

I think I'm going with b) - gives me 12 potential starters, so as long as 1 of Demel or Marveaux gets some gametime I should have a shot of fielding 11.

Demel -> Wilson in GW28 is defintiely an option, although it might make sense to save it with the likely blanks!

From experience at work, yes, dead legs can be nasty depending on how much muscle contusion there is, which we have no idea of at the moment.

My gut is telling me Bale(c) this week because West Ham are atrocious and it's impossible to ignore form...6 goals in his last 4 I think and scored every single goal his team has scored...which is beyond remarkable.

My head is telling me RVP(c), be sensible, don't ignore the master of points. QPR are a bit stronger but they're likely to roll over.

The fear is telling me Walcott(c) but I see signs of improvement in Villa, enough to boldly claim they won't get smashed like others are expecting. But for a last minute Fellaini header they could have won 2 in a row and against West Ham while they were unremarkable they were solid enough and kept possession better than usual.

    Hmmm...

What, if any lessons have you learned this season?

I've learned not to avoid a player who I think is a solid transfer just because a leading rival happens to have him. Instead, play my own game and if he/she happens to also have that player than so be it.

The differentials can instead come from captaincy picks and players that he/she doesn't happen to own, but I also think is a great move.

      Don't listen to anybody else

I think the expensive defender thing is a psychological problem - there's a trend (one that's fairly well documented now) that sees the big teams concede more early on in the season then tighten up later on.

People remember all the clean sheets they got from the 'big guns' in defence at the end of the previous season and load up again at the start of the next. Then get a bit peeved when someone who's trebled up on the West Ham defence smashes them in a H2H!

.. and with that Wildcard comes the inevitable plunge into the GW2 over-performers who are rising thrice who you can't then bear to rid yourself of. Subsequently hits are taking to rid yourself the likes of Jordi Gomez & Aki Riihilahti and the season is finally on track 🙂

    Mignolet
    Harte - Dawson - Wilkinson - Demel
    Walcott - Bale - Mata - Fellaini
    Berbatov - Persie

    I have 1 free transfer,
Bench: Cerny - *Davies - *Michu - *Suarez

My team is not strong enough, I really want to bench Demel and buy a striker or a midfielder. Thinking about selling Suarez(sell for 10,1) but I bought him so early in the game and I have the same problem with Michu(sell for 7,5)

    Any suggestions?

As one person put after the game, if you had a good DGW, you can consider the extra points you earned to offset any hits you take this week as a result of having loaded up on DGW players. People who touched 110+ scores are looking at a fat profit. Doesn't matter what order you get the points, all that matters is that you get them.

Not a bad week to gamble IMO.

Yep, because the scores are expected to be lower due to all the missing players. I do think that people who are resigned to just trying to limit their damage and field less than eleven (particularly if the missing players aren't defenders) are at risk of missing out on hauls - just like the DGW, if you don't buy a ticket, you can't get a ride.

Exactly, even though the scores won't be spectacular as in the DGW, there is probably more scope to to outscore or be outscore by bigger margins. In the Dgw wasn't a great difference in terms of scores.

Consider your position in GW25. You are trying to decide how many DGW26 players to get in and balancing it against how few GW27 players you will have. If you decided to get more DGW26 players, you took a gamble on the DGWing paying off. It did pay off. So considering it across the gameweeks (which is what any planning tools like the RMT tool do), you are in profit.

Now now you cant try and get me with a hindsight card.

IN GW25 you made decisions based on both gameweeks, and at the time this was the sensible thing to do. Time has passed and it is no longer GW25, move on with your thinking and reevalutate based upon the current conditions. And the current conditions involve a completely different set of future matches.

I see what you're getting at (do the best thing at any given time), but if transfer decisions should solely be based on the current gameweek, I think you would end up with transfers that become incoherent over an extended period.

Put it another way, why can't the DGW26 and GW27 scores be considered together as one combined score you are trying to maximize? That's what we were all trying to do. It's how RMT treats it, it adds the scores up over an extended period.

Thats not quite what I am saying. Transfers should be based on the next gameweek and all future gameweeks.

Transfers should never be based on your past.

OK, so let's say you looked at United's next 6 fixtures and decided you wanted to gamble on Rooney for the next 6 because his projected points look highest or whatever. You proceed through the gameweeks and 2 gameweeks another striker looks better for the next 6 because of how the fixtures have changed. If you have to do whatever the optimum is at any given gameweek, surely you are obligated to sell him and scrap the plan?

To some extent I agree, seeing your past points as an excuse to take more gambles isn't necessarily a good enough reason. You could end up ruining your team and putting yourself in more trouble with all the future hits...there's fine line between these things. Even if you scored less than 100 this week you should be approaching the next GW in the same way...with sensible choices/decisions.

It's a bit like saying...Oh I got 108 points this week and I was only expecting 100. Thefefore I'm going to see those extra 8 points as an excuse to treat myself to some hits. This way you are seeing those 8 points as an excess bonus that allows you to indulge. But it's not necessarily how you should look at it. That extra 8 points can be seen as valuable and something that will allow you more patience if you look at it in another way.

You'd think so eh. Seemingly SAF's first choice defender, but with the league almost sewn up I'd say he's more likely to get a rest in an 'easier' PL game than an FA cup or CL game.

    which is better?

    a) Sturridge > Berb (or any striker 7.9 or less) and play 3-5-2
    b) GJ > Evans/Walker and play 4-4-2

Santiagounreal, surprised you think it's a mistake to own expensive defenders. Whilst there may not be too many to choose from, I don't regret bringing in Evra and Zabaleta quite a bit back. Both have been worth their price IMO.

Turner and Harte, both popular options, have been delivering similar returns for a fraction of the price.

Sure, they probably have been worth their price...especially Evra. And to be honest I regret not getting Zab over Nasty a while back. But what I meant mainly is that their are cheaper defenders in teams that offer you roughly the same thing as the expensive ones. Example lately is Azpilicueta or Enrique. Cheaper alternatives. I'm not against expensive defenders but I think there is a lot of value in cheap defenders over a season. It's mainly about being patient.

There's nothing worse too than an underperforming expensive defender...like when I owned Baines for that run of low points. It was hell!
