The Watchlist – Simon Mignolet

Top scoring keeper in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings with 103 points, Simon Mignolet is afforded further opportunity to boost his tally over the next few matches. A run of games which sees Sunderland square up to West Brom, Fulham, QPR and Norwich all hold plenty appeal before the schedule turns nasty for Martin O’Neill’s side in Gameweek 31:

The Belgian heads to the Hawthorns on Saturday on the back of a run of games which has harvested 43 points in his previous nine matches; just under five points per game. While this has included four clean sheets – against Southampton, City, West Ham and Swansea – Mignolet’s save points have also been crucial to his Fantasy prospects. So far, he has made 105 saves, eight more than any other keeper, and has picked up three points against Spurs and Liverpool and four points against Arsenal over the previous nine, despite conceding in each of those fixtures. As a result, he sits six points ahead of Joe Hart in the standings, despite registering two clean sheets less (nine to 11) than the City stopper.

Mignolet’s propensity to pick up save points is crucial to his appeal over alternative Sunderland assets. With regular full-backs Craig Gardner and Danny Rose both classified as midfielders in FPL, the choice is pretty limited – John O’Shea has chipped in with a goal and pair of assists this season but remains almost 30 points behind his keeper. Carlos Cuellar, at 4.4, is a cut-price option but continues to be plagued with a hamstring injury – he was an unused sub against Arsenal last time out, with O’Neill clearly keen to ease him back to action. This leaves Titus Bramble as an alternative but with new boy Kader Mangane building up match fitness, too many question marks currently hang over the centre-half positions, boosting Mignolet’s appeal further.

Coming in at 5.4 in FPL and just 4.4 in the Sky Sports game, Mignolet’s heroics suggest he could be utilised as a one-stop keeper option from here on in, though he could also offer a superb rotation partner with Newcastle’s Tim Krul. Such a scenario would present us with a superb run of home games (SOT, FUL, STO, NOR, MUN, FUL, SUN) over the next seven Gameweeks for those with budget to spare.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Walcott is more nailed on, IMO. There's nothing stopping Wenger starting Wally down the centre again and benching Giroud (however, I don't think that'll happen.)

    ddg (bunn)
    harte cueller onouha GJ (davies)
    fellanii walcott bale maloney (michu)
    rvp suarez (sturridge)

Am leading my monthly league by like 15 points…so in a tough choice. Thinking of taking a hit but if either cueller/onouha then even after 1 hit, i might not have a starting 11.

    A: GJ + suarez >> sagna/santon/wilson(if fit) + augero..sagna has blank in gw29

    B: GJ + suarez >> sagna/santon/wilson(if fit) + dzeko/benteke/lamby…will leave me with cash to
upgrade maloney >> mata and have the P5

    C: GJ + sturridge >> sagna/santon + any striker upto 10m

D: GJ + sturridge >> wilson + augero..but i think having 3 big hitters in strike is too much

    E: michu + suarez >> mata + giroud

I've got Sagna, and am looking to offload very soon, so I wouldn't rush to get him in - as you say he has a likely blank coming, and I can't see many CS coming his way anyway.

Gentlemen, a moment of your time if you don't mind, currently set up for this GW as follows:

    Bunn
    Sagna - Martin - Pearce
    Mata - Walcott - Fellaini - Taarabt - Noble
    RVP - (Suarez)

    Cesar - Clyne - Sturridge - Johnson

    1FT, 0.3m in the bank.

I've decided to lose Suarez over Sturridge, so to whom would you recommend I switch to:

    A ---> Aguero (possible City blank GW29)
B ---> Giroud (Villa looks appetising, and Spurs are usually goal fests, but possible GW29 blank)
C ---> Cisse (decent fixtures, no blanks, but not entirely convinced)
    D ---> Other (please make a suggestion)

    Cheers 🙂

In almost every aspect of the game others are now better than Arsenal and Wenger, in scouting and wage structure.

I think Wenger may be playing the long game around fair play which he thinks will give him the edge...but City and Chelsea are no mugs, they will find loopholes to get around. Wenger may be playing it straight, but he's doing it in a footballing world that is far from straight.

Just because City and Chelsea spend like there's no tomorrow - doesn't mean Arsenal can or should follow suit... maybe there is no way for Arsenal to realistically compete at the top level right now.... but things change & unlimited spending by oil rich oligarchs wont last forever... and Arsenal are poised to be one of the only financially stable clubs in the Premier League...

I agree completely however what I will say is that if Wenger is committed to building a team from younger or not as expensive players, which can work (Swansea are doing it very well right now) then Wenger needs to be spotting these players better. There are a number of questionable transfers that I don't think will be extremely fruitful, for example do you see Giroud becoming a top PL striker? Because I don't. Podolski, while a great player, has consistency issues throughout his career etc. If he wants to be one of these clubs like Dortmund or to some extent Bilbao (although not right now as there's been a huge falling out with the manager and squad) then he has to fully go for that.

I believe the club (and Wengers) philosophy was to commit themselves to cutting their cloth to fit their pocket until the stadium debt was paid off - i don't think that building budget teams with unknowns & young players only was intended to be a long term strategy...

I have no faith in Grioud....Think Walcott is more than enough for Arsenal cover.

Plus, Sturridge is great value for money. And in a way, so is Suarez. He is definitely gonna do better than Sturridge, but at the same time he is a little more expensive. You gotta keep one, depending on your future plans.

Borgen was a great series, series 3 is already out in Denmark but we wont get it here for a while.

Foreign films you can start with any of Pedro Almodovar's stuff, but assuming you will like things just because they are foreign is a wide assumption. To a certain extent you would expect only good films to get bought and broadcasted abroad.

Two of my favourites are Amores Perros and City of God, the latter is now very well known and should be easy to find

This. Also as a fan who's watched a lot of our games, he's played rubbish for almost all of the season.

His one plus point is that he's getting a lot more chances now and is guaranteed gametime due to our lack of options.

Of all the Suarez exit strategies this week he seems the most plausible to me, but even then it doesn't pass the "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" test for me despite the blank. Perhaps that only really applies to those with decent accrued value in Suarez though.

Aguero also fails the test for me: so-so fixtures, ambiguous comments from Mancini, question marks at how city will react to having blown the title, a glut of other contenders for the points in the City team. Not one for me at this point.

    @Jonty

Forgive me for using your words to further my argument but when you say Liverpool are an 'irrelevance' I believe this is why Wenger deserves to be commended. Arsenal, while they are indeed a poorer side than they used to be are still in the hunt, are still in with the pack. Ok they aren't given much hope of safely securing a top 4 place or going far in the CL. But the fact is they are hanging in there, flying in the face of adversity.

Realistically, Arsenal are playing second fiddle to these big money clubs that have come along and snuffed out the underdog. And Wenger's title winning sides were unusual, built on previously unknown players and converted strikers/hidden gems that stifled Man Utd. Nowadays things are so wide open and Wenger's style is copied everywhere. To an almost parodic level at Newcastle.

I still respect the man and think he shouldn't be driven out because he's not delivering silverware. Liverpool have won a Carling cup and a Champions league in the last few years but those achievements are like you say...almost seen as irrelevant (of another era) despite only being 8 years ago when they won the CL. They are no longer a top team, no longer top 4, haven't a hope in hell.

But Arsenal are still relevant, they're still stubbornly refusing to die despite being pushed out of the top two/three. And I think Wenger deserves respect for doggedly refusing to accept defeat...one day it will turn and Arsenal will be back. That's passion for me and getting rid of him puts them in a mess. And more than anything it puts them at risk of losing young players because there is no longer a dynasty in place.

Anyway, that's my 350 words without saying much.

            How about:

            - not winning trophies
            - selling all your best players
            - replacing them with budget players
            - getting knocked out of cups by the lowest ranked team
            - getting less league points every season
            - this season is our lowest points total ever, at this point
            - the manager losing the plot at a press conference, BEFORE a game

            Enough?

We aren't even playing good quality football anymore? We used to attack fast and be incisive. Now the tempo is slow, the passing is passive and the football lacks imagination.

This is admitting defeat though to the rich owners...by deeming teams as irrelevant because they have sold their assets. That's what the rich clubs want teams like Arsenal to believe. I think Wenger is a victim of the new age of oil-rich chairmen throwing money at clubs for success. It just wasn't like that when Wenger was top of the heap.

And yet they still attract high quality players in Cazorla and Podolski etc. While Walcott and Wilshere are two of the most promising talents in England by far. These players are staying and going to Arsenal.

Ok there are the Nasri's who walk away for money and titles. But that's a reflection of his own character more than anything. And in the case of RVP...I believe RVP was just too good to not have other clubs dying to buy him...and he was too good not to win stuff elsewhere.

I mean the fact that it was so hard to win stuff with the likes of RVP in your side shows you the lack of depth they have in this current age. But I don't think Wenger is to blame for having less natural winners in his team than the top 3.

It is up to him to make a stand for the club, and be clear what he needs( or doesn't need) for the club to be a force, which was what Arsenal always strived to be. He is happy to play along with club policy. The likes of SAF and Jose, men who want to win at all costs would have walked by now.

He is an analogue manager in a digital world, afraid to move with the times. Nothing changes at Arsenal, the system, the time he makes his subs (always around the 70 mark, no matter if we are losing), the backroom staff. Yesterday he made another massive tactical blunder not playing Giroud, unfortunately, these tactical blunders are becoming a habit. He's often playing players out of position, Ramsey, Arteta, Gervinho, Szczesny!

Giroud is not good enough anyway, if you compare him to the standards Arsenal set. They had a striker ( RVP) and passed him on to Utd of all teams.

I don't think he had much of a choice with letting RVP go. Giroud may not be world class but we needed him yesterday to help defend corners and hold up the ball.

I agree with Giroud, I was out at a non-league game (3-3 draw in the Southern Prem!), but couldn;t believe the lightweight looking attack he'd picked whne checking the scores. Ramsey was a no-no.

Arteta/Wilshere with Walcott/Cazorla/Podolski and Giroud with the Ox as impact sub might have done better.

      Good post.

Was talking about this the other day. As a Utd fan, you've got to respect Wenger's tenure at Arsenal. But I argued he got lucky early doors with the defence he inherited, and his foreign scouting methods that were ahead of his time. His penchance for strong, skillful, dominant players such as Viera, Petit, Henry etc blitzed all before them. But now the defence has long broken up, and everyone is picking up the foreign gems for academies etc, he has lost his competitive advantage. On a level playing field, his team has under achieved for eight years, since that penalty shoot-out against us in 2005. The following season he was unlucky in the Champions League final, they were holding Barca until Larsson came on adn changed the game. I argued that the team is still in a shell shocked state and has never gotten over three things:

      1. Ramsey's injury
      2. The 4-0 up cock up at Newcastle
      3. The Carling cup final vs Brum that would have got the monkey off their backs once and for all.

Those three things have all contributed to the current maliase in my opinion.

My friend countered that it's only since the Arab/Russian money has come in that they have been left behind, and with financial fair play and the stadium close to being paid off then in a few years they will be as rich as anyone. So in fact, they have done bloody well just to keep pace with their hands tied financially.

Also Utd went 26 years without a title, and Liverpool are now up to 22..hee he! 🙂

Also worth noting that Wenger was an expert at acquiring quality players from France etc cheaply. That market is now being exploited by all the big guns, if you don't pay you won't get nowdays.

        Sissoko - 1.8M
        Debuchy 5.5M

3 France internationals for c12M. I'm sure most Arsenal fans would agree that those 3 would improve their side?

And depends how good you call world class. I'd definitely include Cabaye as a world class player, and Sissoko has the potential to be one, especially in his new role.

Well said... despite the struggles of this season - Wenger has pulled more rabbits out of hats than Paul Daniels since the club invested in the new stadium... not a single season out of the top 4 despite spending less than anyone bar Everton of the teams that have been consistently in the Premier League during that time...

It's like Andy Gray said, if he becomes available there isn't a top club in Europe that won't be paying attention.

Hope the mongs get relegated and Wenger goes to Madrid or Barca ha.

Agreed. Only area I think needs improvement is the transfers. Not that he doesn't spend enough money though. I think, if you're going to try and limit spending to the best you can you have to get the best bang for your buck. The only transfer I see as a big success over Summer was Cazorla. Giroud, while doing his job okay, Arsenal still require another striker or two. Similarly you should not sell players who do not want to leave (Song).

However, I think Wenger deserves a lot more respect than what he gets. Fergie has made some questionable moves in his day yet us United heads still have an absolute respect for him for the most part. Wenger shouldn't have to constantly be explaining himself to people who do not understand what running this team on a tight budget requires.

What about them? Was only using those as an example but defensively I feel the same. Monreal could be a good one, was good before Arsenal anyways. Thought Merte was a poor buy, not sure about their goalie situation either.

It needs sorting, some schoolboy stuff again last night. Bayern are a very good side, but conceding 3 goals at home is not acceptable at this level.

Just to be clear, i wouldn't mid if Wenger stayed on at all, i am still on the fence but this notion that there are no managers who could do a better job is, in my opinion, false. Stupidity is thinking we'll end up like Charlton if he were to leave, we have a massive stadium, a huge fan base and some top players.

I'm not denying what he has done for the club, he is the greatest person in Arsenals history, i am questioning if he still has the nous on the pitch.

Why not? We are still a big club, we could still get a big named manager. It's not like we have players like Van Persie, Fabregas, Henry etc... who see Wenger as a father figure anymore.

What about Verm and Walcott? Wilshere too?

And what manager would you like to see come to Arsenal if Wenger was to leave?

I really wouldn't care if Vermaelen left. Incredibly overrated.

                  Wilshere - loves Arsenal

                  Walcott - loves Arsenal

Again, i don't mind if Wenger stays, i love the man, i am just saying that it is a bit ridiculous to suggest that no other manager can do a better job right now.

Maybe they love Arsenal but Wenger in many ways encapsulates Arsenal. I've a feeling if he left there'd be a few players taking it as a chance to join a team going for a title. As for Verm, don't particularly think he's incredible but he'd be missed.

Not suggesting that at all and I know you like him but I'm just genuinely wondering what managers you would think could do a better job?

I'm not sure to be honest, there are a lot of talented managers we don't even know about. Some names who are doing well this season, Simeone, Pellegrini.

There are plenty. Simeone has A. Madrid in second in La Liga, I think it'd be extremely hard to get him over to take over the reigns. Plus he has some amazing players already there such as Falcao.

Pellegrini is about to face a big test with Malaga in financial troubles and losing some of their bigger players. No doubt a brilliant manager but his time at Madrid was a tough one. If you could lure anyone to Arsenal I would say it would be him. Still though, not sure how much better he'd do right now.

Arsenal have very large match attendances, very expensive ticket prices, yet are bascially are willing to cash in on their best players, to enable others to win a title they have given up on winning. All the Arsenal fans I know over here ain't happy.

But we also have debt still to pay off. Why does everyone always forget that little fact when going on about Arsenal. We built a 60,000 seat stadium in prime location London. But yeah of course we immediately have loads of revenue with no strings attached.

    Any fifa lovers here??
How is the 3-4-1-2 formation in fifa ?? Anyone played with that.

p.s I play with 3-5-2 formation, so playing 3 at the back won't be problem for me

3-5-2, 4-3-3, 4-1-2-1-2, are the best formations in the game. 3-4-1-2, not so much.

The only way to determine that is if you try the formation out and see if it suits your style of play.
