The Stock Check – Saturday

An instantly forgettable Saturday saw the majority of Fantasy managers scratching for points, as clean sheets crumbled and captain options faltered. Here’s the Stock Check on a day of slight returns…

On the Up

Santi Cazorla
The consistent form of Theo Walcott has, understandably, seen Santi Cazorla drift down the Fantasy pecking order and, for a player once at the forefront of Arsenal’s attacking potential, the Spaniard has now become an effective differential. A brace today won the game for the Gunners and took him to 11 for the season, keeping him above Walcott in the overall Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rankings.

Rafael
Sticking to the script, with Jonny Evans dropped to the bench, Rafael stepped up his claim as the weapon of choice in the United backline with a stunning third goal of the season. Despite being rested back in Gameweek 24, Rafael’s claims are strong, although, like all United assets, the Brazilian looks vulnerable for the Gameweek 28 home clash with Norwich ahead of the Champions League second leg with Madrid.

Arouna Kone
The Ivory Coast international took little time to underline his importance to the Latics cause with two first half strikes – taking him to eight goals for the season. Selected as one of our three differentials this week, sadly for Kone, competition in his price bracket remains fierce, with Romelu Lukaku, Dimitar Berabtov, Rickie Lambert and Christian Benteke all offering value with their sub 7.0 price tags.

Dimitar Berbatov
The Bulgarian continues to do just enough to keep his points tally ticking over: a ninth goal of the season today was his third in six to offer a reminder that, if Martin Jol’s side can somehow rediscover some form, Berbatov remains a rare talent worthy of consideration.

Sascha Riether
On the Scout Picks bench this week, the German returned an assist, clean sheet and is likely to earn bonus points from today’s 1-0 win. Riether has enjoyed an outstanding season and has now contributed four assists this term, whilst Martin Jol’s defence have conceded just twice in the last four league outings.

Romelu Lukaku
The Belgian justified his Scout Pick selection with a brace, taking him to 12 goals for the season. Once again, Lukaku looked an unstoppable force at times and the fact that Steve Clarke paired him with Shane Long from the start provided some encouragement. Lukaku is, however, ineligible for the Gameweek 28 fixture with parent club Chelsea.

Marc Wilson
While the Potters defence conceded for the ninth consecutive league outing, the return of Marc Wilson at left-back at least gives those still holding Stoke’s defensive assets an obvious escape route. At 3.9, Wilson looks set to be a hugely popular acquisition for those downgrading the likes of Asmir Begovic and Ryan Shawcross, after a string of disappointing Gameweeks over the past two months.

Going Down

Jonny Evans
Rio Ferdinand’s recall at Loftus Road was far from a surprise but, with Sir Alex Ferguson previously talking up the need to preserve Nemanja Vidic, it was a real surprise to see the Serbian maintain his starting role at QPR at the expense of Jonny Evans. With the rotation of Ferdinand and Vidic looking a likely trend, Evans had seemed nailed on for a run of starts: today’s teamsheet confirmed that as far from certain.

Robin Van Persie
The Dutchman provided the assist for Rafael’s opener at the Bush but the Dutchman’s contribution was cut short by a hip injury sustained in a collision with cameramen on setting up the goal. Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t seem too concerned post-match, although there are big question marks over Van Persie’s start in the Old Trafford clash with Norwich next weekend, regardless of the injury.

Lukas Podolski
Benched for the third consecutive league outing, memories of the 17-point haul in double Gameweek 23 now seem distant as the German struggles to maintain his start in Wenger’s lineup.

The Everton Defence
David Moyes’ side remain unable to see out matches and, having looked in command at Carrow Road, conceded two second half goals to lose the points. They’ve now gone four without a shutout with just four for the season in total, as Leighton Baines’ owners were left clinging to the comfort of the assist for Leon Osman’s opener.

Alex Pearce
Having looked to be a viable budget option in the Royals back four, Pearce was relegated to the bench by Brian McDermott and Sean Morrison earned a recall to the defence. Given the performance by the Reading defence, however, you have to wonder if Pearce will earn a recall soon enough.

Pavel Pogrebnyak
A miserable day for the Royals was compounded by a straight red card for the Russian who earned an early bath for a reckless challenge on Maynor Figueroa. Pogrebnyak will miss three league outings against Everton, Villa and United.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Is Walcott still the man or do you think Cazorla is getting back to being the better alternative?

I always thought Walcott offered greater goal threat, particularly in the forward position, but now he's been shifted back to wide right I'm not so sure. With Cazorla, he tends to blow hot and cold.

There was a link on a Fulham site I read to a Stoke forum. They're going bananas. They had a poll on the site last week where 66% wanted Pulis sacked. Numerous threads on how they don't like half their players. Strange, most people would be surprised if Pulis was sacked tomorrow. Seems like Stoke fans would be happy

I just downgraded Evra for Wilson and upgraded Begovic to de Gea to take a -4 hit. I've been clearing out cap room to make a major move in the next couple of weeks. I would like to max out my budget and put the rest of my league in a deadly vice grip. What should I do? Any help would be much appreciated...I'm kind of a noob and an american, so i am doubly challenged 🙂

    Team value: £104.2m

    In the bank: £6.8m

    Week 28 starters:

    de Gea

    Zabaleta Wilson Enrique

    Mata Fellaini Bale Michu Sissoko

    Van Persie Lambert

Thanks. I was thinking Lambert for Suarez because I like Lukaku so much. I already made my moves this week, so I am stuck with Lukaku for wk 28 anyway. What do you think of Rooney, Van Persie, Suarez if i can pull it off?

So what are people's plans for this? I don't think I'm even going to try getting 11 out. I have Mata, Walcott, Podolski and Evans. Pod will go, but I don't want to drop any of the others just to bring them back later. I think better to just take it n the chin. . . (And accept that this Evans cock up is stinging me twice!)

Evening. Maybe this is selective memory or it's still a bit early in the season, but does anyone else find the bands of salary distribution a bit odd this time around? Suarez's imminent drop -- he will be 10.5 later this evening -- makes it seem there are so many cheap options this year.
    RVP 14
    Rooney not quite 12
    Kun not quite 11
    Suarez 10.5
Bale and Mata just over 10
Is that normal? Thought for sure in seasons past there were several guys in the 11/12/13 range, but I might just be merging the seasons together.

These are the things I think about when I want to avoid the reality of Sturridge and Gerrard transferred to Benteke and Walcott for a hit.

To the previous poster talking about 66% of Stoke fans wanting Pulis out, that was based on a total of 313 people and was also conducted during our current barren spell. I wonder what the split would have been had it been done during our recent 10 match unbeaten run? There's nowt more fickle than a football fan...

Nonetheless, this is why people are getting frustrated with him:

      - About 12 transfer windows to address key problem areas in the squad - which still remain. Namely left back (also not completely satisfied with wingers).
      - In all likelihood we have peaked under his tenure
      - Lack of faith in youth despite massive investment in academy
      - Persists with Walters irrespective of how unlucky / wank he is.
      - Generally poor in transfer market in my opinion (we have signed a fair few donkeys and players who have not even hardly ever featured)
      - Plays the WANKEST football I've ever witnessed.
      - Doesn't seem utilize our squad to its maximum potential (start Jerome & Jones, Pennant?, Adam...)

Dropped for Wilson I believe. Shotton kept his place at right-back, Wilson went left-back.

Our previous right-back, Geoff Cameron played in right midfield, even though he came to the club as a central midfield player.

Add that to the list of dislikes above.

I think a lot of fans feel that he has taken us as far as he can and it's time to push on in much the same way Southampton are doing at the moment. It may work, it may not.

Let us not forget that not only was he here for around 6 years, but also before the previous manager, Johan Boskamp, for another 3-4 years in which we went a good 18 games with no more than two goals in it. So this football is a Pulis thing, not a Stoke thing.

At the end of the season, I'd be more excited if he wasn't here than if he was. The away football on offer is completely drab. I went today and the first half we looked utterly clueless and so defensive minded it was untrue. He sets out to draw games that we could potentially win and so we end up conceding the first goal as a result. Consequently, we're then playing catch-up for the entire second half, in which we usually do a lot better.

The main argument is that we'd probably go down if we got a new manager in, but I don't think we would. I'd certainly sacrifice a few league positions to see a few more exciting games of football.

No doubt its a results business. You guys are in poor form and if that continues he deserves to be sacked. However if you remain mid table at the end of the season I can imagine change would only harm your club and you'd be relegation threatened, particularly if you want a more attractive brand of football.

        The stakes for staying in the pl are so high, and with tv payments next season will get higher. I just look at West Ham with horror, a side who always played football you would pay to watch. Swansea have proved you can achieve and play decent, appealing football. People won't believe me, but I would prefer see QPR relegated which they will(for other reasons) than to revert to the Stoke approach. In winning the championship which for me was a great achievement, we played, exciting attractive football;
