The Stock Check – Sunday

Two quick-fire goals from Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon catch the Gunners defence flat-footed and, with the Spurs back four holding firm, North London superiority is very much with Andre Villas-Boas’ side tonight. Here’s the Stock Check on Sunday’s events…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
It’s seven league goals in his last five league matches as Bale continued his incredible form and saw him repay those who placed the armband with the Welshman. There’s little to be said on Bale that hasn’t been said already – his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag has risen 0.6 in the space of two Gameweeks and there’s every reason to expect that to go on ascending as more Fantasy managers concede defeat and acquire his services.

Michael Dawson
Spurs have now gone 12 league outings unbeaten and, in that spell, they’ve kept five clean sheets and conceded more than one goal just once (at West Ham on Monday). The installation of Dawson in central defence has been a major factor – he’s started ten of the last eleven and was outstanding once again in a second half rearguard effort. At just 4.6 in the FPL, Dawson may not have appealing fixtures but, given Tottenham’s current form, he may still continue to deliver value.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
The Icelander scored his first league goal for Spurs at Upton Park on Monday and that was enough to see him start ahead of Lewis Holtby this afternoon. Sigurdsson again returned, slotting a smart pass through for Bale’s opener – his fifth assist of the season. It remains to be seen if he can hold his starting role, particularly once Clint Dempsey regains fitness. With Bale monopolising our attention, however, Sigurdsson seems unlikely to attract too much Fantasy interest.

Aaron Lennon
Lennon is another playing in the shadow of Gareth Bale. Today’s goal was his fourth of what has been a consistent season for the fleet-footed winger. At 7.2, ordinarily, Lennon may earn some Fantasy interest but with Bale’s form so relentless, he remains little more than a fanciful differential.

Going Down

The Arsenal Defence
While Tottenham’s rearguard has delivered five shut-outs in twelve and shown some determined consistency, Arsenal’s defence continues to look brittle and was exploited with ease by two through-balls today. It’s just two clean sheets in the last ten for Arsene Wenger’s back four – they came against Stoke and Sunderland – two teams amongst the most impotent in the league. Those holding Arsenal defensive assets will surely be looking to trade in for the Gameweek 29 blank and will consider the merits of acquiring them back, even with the confirmed double Gameweek 33 beckoning.

Olivier Giroud
It’s four league outings without a goal now for the Frenchman who, at one stage looked to have settled in Wenger’s lineup but now looks out of form and vulnerable once again. Giroud’s stint at centre-forward has led to Theo Walcott shifting to the flank and that has led to his returns dropping – Walcott has also failed to score in the last four Gameweeks, keeping his tally ticking with three assists. We could well see changes to Wenger’s tactics following the Gameweek 29 break.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

You said it when you said - "I’m sure this has been argued 100 times already"
          More like 1,000.

          It's an OG no doubt.
          But Mertersacker's been credited.
I'm sure bookmakers would have paid out on him scoring if you had him next goal.

          Can't see it changing now.
Dubious goal panel may have a look but that's weeks away potentially.

i'm not convinced-watched it several times and I don't believe anyone can be 100% certain that Mertesacker header wasn't on target.

Mert's header was going towards the corner flag at best.

Bale was behind Mertesacker so ball was going forward so not sure it is as clear as you say. I'm sure it won't change.

it's nothing to do with FPL-it's the actual game itself that has awarded Mertesacker(press association)-nothing to do with a 'Fantasy' game.

-8 not worth it. The games that are on I think will be a big disappointment. Many FPL teams will field 9 or 10 players only and many more will take a hit, but don't take two.

This game is all about your captain choice paying off. Your team can explode, but if your captain returns 2 (or worse), there's always the tendency to rue what might have been.

I didn't do Suarez(c) (actually, I was quite happy when I checked my mate's team at midday and found he had), but I did bring in Suarez this week and gratefully, Bale returned the goal most of us expected. Arsenal were never going to roll out a side concerned with nullifying the threat of Bale; they don't have a natural DM and Wenger was typically French in shrugging off how they would plan to contain him.

Following form, fixture, and reasoned knowledge of the game, paid off this week. Next GW should be interesting without the comfort blanket of the RVP auto-captain.

    A season of 2 halves.

Can anyone beat this for contrasting fortunes.

By GW2 I was 9745 in the world, then I had 10 red arrows out of 11 and slipped to 560,277 by GW13.

Since then, over the last 13 weeks Ive had 12 green arrows and risen back up to 37,261.

It wasnt even as if I played my wildcard and drastically changed my team. My luck just shifted.

I would rather have the money invested in RVP. Might feel different if I didn't have Suarez

I have decided religion is actually a good thing and have decided to say a little prayer before go to bed. It goes,
Dear God person, I think you are great,
Could you do me some little favours, and I will always be good, I promise,
Let Clark score for Villa, only because it would cheer him up,
Please give Aguero a day off, because he has worked ever so hard,
Ta very much Mister God type person.

I had Bale and Walcott today and got a big fat arrow. How come? Bale captaincy is that big or everybody own Mert and Parker? Really don't get it.

      bonus points?

6 of the top 10 had Bale captain so i'd imagine quite a few did in the top 10k!

There could be a lot of teams with plenty Arsenal and Spurs cover and the 2 points x 4, 5 or 6 players adds up and knocks you back.

Walcott owners what are you planning ?

I'm thinking of selling now, and evaluating closer to their double gameweek to bring him back or bring Cazorla in.

Also is the Chelsea-Fulham game definitely off ??

Sticking, I think. Might be doing a 2-3-3 or 3-3-3 formation and keeping Mata and Walcott. There isn't really anyone else from the Arsenal team I'd want to potentially captain in a DGW.
