The Stock Check – Sunday

Two quick-fire goals from Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon catch the Gunners defence flat-footed and, with the Spurs back four holding firm, North London superiority is very much with Andre Villas-Boas’ side tonight. Here’s the Stock Check on Sunday’s events…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
It’s seven league goals in his last five league matches as Bale continued his incredible form and saw him repay those who placed the armband with the Welshman. There’s little to be said on Bale that hasn’t been said already – his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag has risen 0.6 in the space of two Gameweeks and there’s every reason to expect that to go on ascending as more Fantasy managers concede defeat and acquire his services.

Michael Dawson
Spurs have now gone 12 league outings unbeaten and, in that spell, they’ve kept five clean sheets and conceded more than one goal just once (at West Ham on Monday). The installation of Dawson in central defence has been a major factor – he’s started ten of the last eleven and was outstanding once again in a second half rearguard effort. At just 4.6 in the FPL, Dawson may not have appealing fixtures but, given Tottenham’s current form, he may still continue to deliver value.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
The Icelander scored his first league goal for Spurs at Upton Park on Monday and that was enough to see him start ahead of Lewis Holtby this afternoon. Sigurdsson again returned, slotting a smart pass through for Bale’s opener – his fifth assist of the season. It remains to be seen if he can hold his starting role, particularly once Clint Dempsey regains fitness. With Bale monopolising our attention, however, Sigurdsson seems unlikely to attract too much Fantasy interest.

Aaron Lennon
Lennon is another playing in the shadow of Gareth Bale. Today’s goal was his fourth of what has been a consistent season for the fleet-footed winger. At 7.2, ordinarily, Lennon may earn some Fantasy interest but with Bale’s form so relentless, he remains little more than a fanciful differential.

Going Down

The Arsenal Defence
While Tottenham’s rearguard has delivered five shut-outs in twelve and shown some determined consistency, Arsenal’s defence continues to look brittle and was exploited with ease by two through-balls today. It’s just two clean sheets in the last ten for Arsene Wenger’s back four – they came against Stoke and Sunderland – two teams amongst the most impotent in the league. Those holding Arsenal defensive assets will surely be looking to trade in for the Gameweek 29 blank and will consider the merits of acquiring them back, even with the confirmed double Gameweek 33 beckoning.

Olivier Giroud
It’s four league outings without a goal now for the Frenchman who, at one stage looked to have settled in Wenger’s lineup but now looks out of form and vulnerable once again. Giroud’s stint at centre-forward has led to Theo Walcott shifting to the flank and that has led to his returns dropping – Walcott has also failed to score in the last four Gameweeks, keeping his tally ticking with three assists. We could well see changes to Wenger’s tactics following the Gameweek 29 break.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Do Fellaini to Sissoko for a hit and then get Fellaini back for the double GW? I can field 10 then and Fellaini has City after the blank while Siss has Wigan.... yes/no?

Everton only get a DGW if they get knocked out of the FA Cup by Wigan. Otherwise they'll miss the GW33 weekend game, and play Arsenal midweek in GW33.

Wenger has got no tactics, his 'we don't make plans for anyone' p*ssed me off before the game and more so when Bale strolled through the middle. And what is up with Ramsey getting so much game time?!

This is nuts IMO. You want him to tell the press and therefore the opposition his tactics before hand? I didn't get to watch the second half, but Bale was pretty much held in check for the first 45 minutes with one lapse in concentration by the defense. I can't fault Wenger for that.

You can see it on the pitch never mind the press conference. Why sell Alex Song and stick Arteta and Ramsey in there to do a shoddy job in defensive mid? Why sub off Jenkinson to play Ramsey at right back? Why???

Song wanted to leave? He played Ramsey RB because he figured Spurs wouldnt attack much (which they didnt), and he rates Ramsey`s attacking talents higher than Jenkinsons (which they are).

Why did he want to leave? Why not buy replacement? Ramsey is awful in position. We haven't won squat for 8 years! Highest ticket prices, sell all our best players every season, the board is probably the biggest problem but Wenger has become their stooge.

I dont know, i just read that he wanted to leave. Its Barcelona, how could you say no? On the other hand, ive read rumours that he was forced out, which i think is absolute horsesh*t. Ramsey was exellent before he got injured. Do you not think its taring at a young boy playing below his own and everyone elses expectations?
You think its easy to win trophies? Its not. Arsenal has qualified for the CL every single season under Wengers management. Thats outstanding. Youve lost players to bigger clubs than yourself, who could offer better chances to win trophies and more money. Foreign players, mercenaries. Lay off Wengers back.

The numbe of assist Song had In His last year covered up that his defensive skills hasn't develope in the way it once looked like they would.

On loan at Charlton in his breakthrough season he looked a genuine contender to become the 'new Makelele'. Sadly he never got near this standard.

And are you not the same Arsenal fans whose lambasting of transfer policy led to Wenger acquiring more proven players like Arteta?

For me, players like Arteta are good - but not good enough. You can't afford those who are good enough as they'll pick Madrid, Chelsea etc every time.

So your options are to buy younger players and hope they develop and accept that you probably won't win anything whilst they do- exactly what Wenger wants to do.

It was the short term purchases which have messed your team up, let the man get on with running a very successful club.

Sorry, its not your post that stirred me into life, it just needed to be said.

It was the short term sales that messed the team up. The Song transfer sums this up far better than even the Nasri, Fabregas or Van Persie sales. Death by a thousand cuts, the emperor has no clothes. Tipping point has been reached, no more patience left.

Another point, Arsenal FC is an increidbly profitable club. 14-15 straight seasons in the champions league now. Maybe they`ll fall out of it this season. So what? Look at the money Chelsea spend, every year for the last decade. And yet, they placed 6th in the BPL last year. Think about that.

I can field 10 players for GW 29 , but I have a question on what the regulars here do when you have choose in this scenario:
I have to field Punch and Shaw for southampton who play against Norwich but my choice of Goalkeeper is between Bunn and Mignolet.

Should I just choose Mignolet and hope Sou do well?

You should always play who you would play anyway regardless of who they are up against. Putting all your eggs in one basket, never really works. Personally, I think both keepers will concede, but if you think Bunn will do better, you should play him regardless of your Southampton players.

I guess i just disagree. Sturridge probably will come in around 9-9.5 with Suarez at 11.5-12.0. Do you honestly see Sturridge as a 20 goal/season striker playing for Liverpool? Its pretty obvious that Suarez is capable of 30 goals/season.

First time ever fielding 5-2-2 in this game, but doing it i get to keep Mata and Theo and take no hits for the coming GW. Best striker for next GW if you already have Suarez and Benteke? Im leaning towards Lukaku. 1 week full rest, should be very hungry.
