Versus – Rooney and Van Persie

With a single goal in his last six appearances, Robin Van Persie’s season seems to be stuttering to a halt as United close in on the title. Having notched six times in the previous five league fixtures, the Dutchman’s drought has had a huge impact across the Fantasy games – coinciding with a return to fitness which has seen Wayne Rooney find the net five times by comparison. As the transfers out continue to flow, our latest article for members focuses on the pair’s respective performances over those matches and also casts an eye on Van Persie’s previous displays to establish whether there is any real cause for concern:

As the above maps indicate, Rooney’s role (right) has been more withdrawn than the Dutchman’s (left) over the featured period. Dropping deep to link with the midfield, the former Everton man has received a pass from team mates at almost twice the pace of Van Persie (2.1 to 3.9) and although this is understandable due to their respective roles, Rooney has also proven superior in the final third of the pitch in terms of involvement.

While Van Persie has averaged 23.5 touches in the final third between Gameweeks 24 and 30, Rooney has registered 30.3. The latter has received over double the number of passes (20.5 to 9.7), and has made over twice the number of successful passes in this crucial attacking area (14.5 to 7). Although the Dutchman has returned three FPL assists to Rooney’s two over the six featured matches, he’s offered far less creativity – averaging 1.3 “key passes” to Rooney’s 2.3, which equates to a chance created every 60.6 minutes in compared to the far quicker pace of 36.1 minutes offered by Rooney.

Sorting the forwards statistics by “Last Six Matches”, it’s telling to see that only Fulham’s Bryan Ruiz has averaged more touches than Rooney (1.1 to 1.3), while the Costa Rican also edges Rooney into second for minutes per pass received, by 2 to 2.1. Indeed, while Rooney is second for chances created, with 14 to Rickie Lambert’s 15, Van Persie’s total of 8 over his last six appearances puts him on a par with Arouna Kone and Andy Carroll. Furthermore, Rooney’s above-mentioned average of 36.1 minutes per key pass is second to Carlos Tevez (34.2) for regular starters, demonstrating his constant creativity and suggesting he’s been unlucky to pick up just two assists over the timeframe.

Given that Van Persie has notched just once, it’s perhaps surprising to see he has actually seen more of the ball inside the penalty area than Rooney, with 5.8 touches to 5.2 per game. Rooney, however, has offered the greater threat – he has averaged 4 shots per game over the six matches in comparison to Van Persie’s 3.2 and, despite seeing less of the ball in the box, has been more consistent in producing efforts from close range, with 2.2 shots inside the area to Van Persie’s 1.8. In terms of minutes per attempt, Rooney slightly edges it with a shot every 21 minutes to Van Persie’s average of 25.5.

Analysing the pair’s accuracy, though, Van Persie clearly remains a major threat. He has registered more shots on target per game (1.5 to 1.2) than Rooney – crucially, what this boils down to is that 47.4% of his shots have been on target in comparison to just 29.2% of Rooney’s efforts, a definite sign that his threat remains significant. Due to the endeavours of opposition keepers, the Dutchman has failed to flourish. Van Persie has scored just one of his 19 attempts, then, (a conversion rate of 5%), while Rooney has found the net with 20.8% of his efforts (24 shots, 5 goals).

Again, looking at other forwards sorted by “Last Six Matches” , it’s somewhat reassuring for Van Persie’s owners to see that only two forwards – Daniel Sturridge and Javier Hernandez – have produced more efforts on target, with 12 and 11 respectively. Rooney has managed 7 shots on target, scoring 5 times, then, while the Dutchman’s poor conversion has resulted in one goal from 9 shots on target – a tally mirrored by Luis Suarez and Romelu Lukaku, who scored 5 and 4 times respectively, while Christian Benteke found the net 5 times from 8 efforts on target.

Having compared Van Persie’s performances to Rooney over the last six, we now analyse them against his previous five appearances – a period where Rooney played just 29 minutes, after climbing off the bench to signal his return from injury in the Gameweek 23 clash with Tottenham.

Immediately, you can see the impact Rooney has made on Van Persie’s overall involvement; his previous average of 3.2 minutes per pass received has dropped to 3.9, while the Dutchman’s touches in the final third slipped from 28.8 to 23.5 over the two periods. In terms of passes received in the final third, the decrease has been minimal (11.6 to 9.7), while the same also applies to the number of successful passes Van Persie has made in the danger area – moving from 8.8 per appearance between Gameweek 19-23 down to 7 per appearance over Gameweek 24-30. Perhaps surprisingly, Van Persie’s creativity has increased in recent weeks, moving from 0.8 key passes to 1.3, or a chance created every 102.8 minutes to one every 60.6 minutes.

When we look at goal threat, though, there’s been a definite difference. Although Van Persie has more or less registered the same touches in the box (6.0 has slipped slightly to 5.8), his previous average of 4.4 attempts per game without Rooney has now slumped to 3.2 – intriguingly, this was the number of efforts he was averaging inside the box in Rooney’s absence and not far off double his current average of 1.8 efforts from close range. Van Persie was also producing more shots on target (2 to 1.5) over the first period and while his overall accuracy has dropped a touch (47.4% to 45.5%) it remains far superior to Rooney’s recent level of 29.2%.

Previously, the Dutchman was registering a shot every 18.7 minutes – better than his or Rooney’s current rate of 25.5 and 21 respectively, though the main issue, as mentioned above, is really just his current conversion rate. Without Rooney alongside him, Van Persie tucked away 27.3% of his chances over Gameweeks 19-23 and, while it’s clear his strike partner has impacted upon his performances since returning, Van Persie only really has himself – and, in part, opposition keepers – to blame for this plummeting to a lowly 5.3%. With a season average conversion rate of 18.4%, though, an upturn on Fantasy performances looks on the cards despite a definite decrease in his overall threat since Rooney’s return to the United XI.

Most do. QPR have firepower now, but have left themselves too much to do. Reading have no firepower. Villa might just do it, Wigan always seem to do it.

Basically what it comes down to is...

Can Wigan win 3 games plus some draws and hope that one of Soton, Sunderland or Villa don't win 2 more games. I can see us winning 2 more games so I'm confident we can scrape it...but I'm counting on Wigan bottling it.

I honestly think it will be:

        Southampton
        QPR
        Reading

Wigan should be able to pull off another great escape and West Ham will want to start getting a few wins strung together or else they'll be flirting with relegation zone too 🙂

The best part about keeping it late is that you can afford to simply focus on gw36-38 and take more gambles.

Unless you're forced to take a lot of hits earlier, I'd definitely suggest retaining it. Saves you the trouble of thinking about more fixtures.

Wouldn't be too bothered by a Chelsea DGW tbh. (Cue: Rafatation)

You've got 3-4 FTs surely. That's more than enough coverage even without hits.

If it's a Chelsea DGW I'm looking at Luiz/Azpi, Lamps and Hazard

It just seems to me that if I can 8 for 33 and 10 for 36 for only -4, that seems better. GW37 and 38 will still only have 1 FT and the players I'm bringing in for 36 are the best I can afford anyway. I'll just transfer based on form/fixture in 37 and 38.

don't really get your point about it being whether Caz/Michu can outscore Cazorla/Puncheon...oh wait maybe I do...basically you are saying which is going to score more points over the next 2. My guess would be Caz/Michu. Which is what I would prefer as Puncheon is an outcast right now.

So by that logic, I should do Walcott > Caz?

Bit of a waste of transfers not bringing in some big hitters though?

When to play the WC is a tricky decision. With my team would you plan to play it in GW33 or GW36? No EVE, CHE or FUL as things stand, and if JEvans, Szczesny and Walcott don't get back on the pitch then I'm short on ARS and MUN also.

Part of me thinks that playing the WC in GW33 is the way to go, and just use my 2 freebies this week and the one next week as short term punts.

    Well needed article.

We can safely say that there's very little to chose between RVP and Rooney other than the price.

Those with neither will no doubt (rightly) go for the cheaper one but those holding RVP will look to keep and hope his shots on target will be converted into goals at a higher rate going forward. I see no reason why this won't happen!

              Interesting

to be honest, I wouldn't be against selling Rooney if I thought someone else would score more points over some fixtures. I think it's the people with RVP who have the problem...if he continues to blank they'll get impatient and start panicking and maybe sell for either Rooney or someone else and BAM he will score.

You may have keeper issues unless Reina is fit.

Maybe worth you getting a dgw keeper in ?

From what I've read, Reina should be fine and they are playing Villa so maybe not this week 🙂

That's your keeper covered then !

          Bebratov for Lambert?

Stock up for the dgw ?

          Muthersucker in at the back?

Berba sure is tempting! And so is Santi Cazorla.. Should prioritize the attacking players right? 😛

Sorry for the off top guys but I really need your advice!
I want to fly over from Moscow to watch Liverpool Everton on the 04.05.2013 and I will need 2 tickets for the match. Is there any chance I could get the tickets somewhere?
I appreciate your help and advice.
My apologies once again for the off top.
    David.

If you're on Twitter @LFCFaceValue & @LFCTicketMan are good to follow. People stick up unwanted ones and generally meet the person there. Ticket finder is a good website too I think.
Otherwise you could go on forums and check it out but if all that fails I'd still take the gamble on matchday. Plenty of season ticket holders look to cash in on games but it might be a bit harder what with it being the derby.

    Few questions here:
a)Are you keeping Mata? Chelsea are playing 4 games in 8 days then traveling to Russia for Rubin Kazan game. Not sure if Mata will start the Southampton and Fulham game.
b)Should I keep Evans? Or sell him for Reither/Mert?

      I haven't got Mata.
      I'd keep Evans for now.

Misguided opinion, just kept clean sheets away to Bayern and Swansea.

          Misguided advice, you mean.

Misguided opinion would read something like this: SWN have stopped playing for the season and Bayern let Arse win as the tie was already over.

They don't ?...That's odd because they have ten this season which is only one behind the leading clean sheets score for the season...

Hello everyone.which transfer should I do before next gw:

    A) Punch->Maloney

    B) Mignolet-> DDG( but I'm a little bit worried that SAF will bench him before FA Cup replay)

    C) Bunn->Fabianski or Mucha( if Fabianski I won't get Cazorla for Michu before dgw because have Monreal and Walcott already )

D)Walcott->Cazorla(otherwise I have to play Sissoko against City away but I still think this transfer is a bad idea)

    thanks

For me, most of my transfer decisions hinge around when I play my WC. Initially I'd planned this for GW36, but with rotation and injury hitting my team, plus having no cover from EVE, FUL or CHE, I'm starting to think WCing in GW33 makes sense. Can I get a vote please (with reasons if possible....) as to when you would choose to WC the below team:

    a) GW33
    b) GW36

    Szczesny, Bunn
    JEvans, Davies, Turner, Demel, Harte
    Bale, Walcott, Michu, Sissoko, Marveaux
    RVP, Suarez, Sturridge

    Bank 2.3m, 2 freebies

Nice to see others are stuck with Szczesny Bunn, Jevans Walcott....

I too had planned to WC in GW36, but I think by then we won't be too sure on which DGWers will be nailed on and motivated.

Plan is now to WC in GW32 so that there are 2 FTs available for GW36.

If it were me i'd do it this week....Sczesny/Evans/Davies/Harte/Walcott/RVP/Sturridge/Bunn all iffy starters....Davies has Taylor breathing down his neck and a blank...doubled up on Newcastle against City...Michu with a blan and firing blanksk...Suarez one card off a ban...Up to you but i think you could be staring down the barrel of a 15 pt weekend if it all goes wrong.

My side is in trouble and the wisdom of the FFS crew:

    Szczesny* (Bunn*)
    JEvans* Davies Clyne (Harte, Demel)
    Mata Bale Theo* Sissoko (Townsend)
    RVP Rooney Sturridge

Ok so Szczesny, Bunn, Jevans, theo I need to fix now. Help?

      Bunn -> Fabianski

Then wait and see what the deal is with Theo. Jevans too could play next game.
