Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Gaston Ramirez

Arriving at Southampton on the final day of last summer’s transfer window, Gaston Ramirez’s acquisition was regarded as a real coup for the Premier League new boys. The Uruguayan signed on for a club record fee believed to be in the region of £12m and, having been favourably priced across the Fantasy games, looked a genuine mid-price option for our five man midfields:

By the end of the season, however, Ramirez was sitting in the St Mary’s stands after being banned for the final three matches, with his debut campaign in the English top-flight turning out patchy at best. A total of five goals and four assists over 26 appearances, supplemented by eight Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points saw Ramirez end the season on 88 points – given that Rickie Lambert racked up 187 points as the lone forward, it’s fair to say that the former Bologna man had plenty room for improvement next time out.

Key Factors

  • On the positive side, Ramirez’s limited returns from his role in “the hole” is likely to be good news for his price across the Fantasy games next time round. While Lambert’s exploits will ensure a hefty hike and perhaps force him out of many Fantasy plans, Ramirez should remain around the 6.0 mark in FPL – given that mid-price midfield options such as Michu, Marouane Fellaini and Kevin Nolan are all set to rise in cost, Ramirez may well step up as a strong value option.

  • Ramirez’s first season in the Premier League was also blighted by a leg problem. With his game time limited, the new boy made just 20 starts and six sub appearances for the Saints and featured for a total of 1,679 minutes compared to Lambert’s 3,126 minutes – while he delivered only 47% of Lambert’s FPL points haul, then, he only played 53% of the forward’s game time. If he remains injury-free next time round and providing Pochettino curbs his penchant for subbing Ramirez off midway through the second period of matches, the Uruguayan will be optimistic of mirroring his final season in Serie A, which harvested eight goals and four assists.

  • Although Southampton stuttered towards the end of the previous campaign, Ramirez hinted at an upturn in performance at St Mary’s. The Uruguayan notched in two of his final four home appearances before receiving his marching orders for an elbowing incident involving Shane Long in Gameweek 35 – Mauricio Pochettino has already talked up his star man’s potential for next time out, following a difficult settling-in period. Certainly, the 2013/14 fixture list affords Ramirez the perfect platform to kick on – Southampton’s first six home fixtures look particularly strong (SUN, WHM, CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL) and with trips to West Brom, Norwich and Stoke also included in the opening 11 Gameweeks, the Saints could barely have wished for a kinder opening run.

  • As Pochettino prepares for his first full season in charge, he’ll be buoyed by some of his side’s home results against the top eight last time round. Since taking the reins last January, the Argentine saw his side beat City, Chelsea and Liverpool at St Mary’s, in addition to drawing with Everton in his first match in charge. While there’s no denying Saints finished the season poorly, Pochettino’s side have already shown their capabilities and will be looking to eradicate the inconsistencies that harvested just four points from their final six games – Ramirez will undoubtedly be key to their progression.

Looks like Arsenal will be favorites for the league this year then with the big money signings they are going to make. The season Arsenal fans have been waiting for Arsene will spend big and get in a few world class players. Start of a new era imo,

Title winning form from Feb to the end of the season, I know that's easy to say but it was promising..

I don't see why 2-3 really good signings (Higuain, Fellaini and one more) couldn't have us right up there challenging if the rest of the team plays like they did in the last third of the season last year.

Technical question regarding bookmarking posts on here...

There have been some very useful posts lately that I want to be able to go back to at the start of the season when it comes to putting my team together.

I've never used bookmarking posts on here at all but what I've tried is to click the # links below the post which then give you a URL like the following...

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/23/great-expectations-kevin-mirallas/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_4995720

My plan was to put this link in a Fantasy Football bookmarks folder in the hope that when I come back to it in a month it will take me straight to the comment but all it seems to be doing is loading the article at the top and the post I want doesn't even seem to be on the page below, let alone automatically going to it.

Am I doing something wrong? Is this a browser issue? (I'm using Chrome)

Any help with what I'm trying to achieve would be great!

      Hi GoonerByron

I think it may be to do with how you have the comments sorted at the time you create the bookmark - if you're sorting by date it's fine but if you're using one of the new sorting methods it doesn't seem to work the same.

I've flagged this up behind the scenes once but I'll give the issue a bump 🙂

That will be why then, I've been sorting them by discussion rating as some of the ones I wanted for reference were towards the top... I'll track them down using the time/date in the post for now then.. Cheers! 🙂

Yeah, it's a bit of a pain. One thing I have noticed which may help - the comment number at the end of the URL will be correct, it's just the page number which is wrong, it may be quicker to just change that until you hit the comment you want.

Thank Fodor for that, this is the exact sort of signing wenger has been aiming for in the last 5 years. Don't get me wrong payet's a decent player but he's not top class and is the exact type of player we already have. Would have been a stagnating signing.

This brings me onto a question I was just about to post.

Although the upcoming season will be my 4th in FPL, I consider it the first one I'll go into with my eyes fully open (thanks to this site). After reading In Tommy We Trust's "FPL: A Beginners Guide" article yesterday, one of the points I picked up from it (that I'd never considered before) is 'rotating big-hitters'. Now, I know if you've shelled out for big-hitters, then you'll be playing them every week (not rotating them like a pair of 4.0m defenders). But, in respect to captaincy choice, is it worth planning your big hitters so as to provide you with a solid captaincy choice every week? Or should you just get the big-hitters you want, and then play the captaincy issue on a week-by-week basis?

You pick the Captain who you think is going to score the most points each week.

        Rotating Captains? Bizarre.

Yes, I agree to an large extent. Normally you'll have a few captaincy alternatives each GW, and pick the one you think will score the most points. But, if you find a pair that gives you a rotation similar to a pair of budget defenders (whereby each week one of them plays a promoted/defensively weak team), then the potential for 'consistent monster hauls (C)' is there. No?

            Not sure mate

For example, last year I had RVP, Bale, Mata, Michu.

I'd just bang the (c) on the one in form playing the crappest defence.

            I must be missing something?

Then again, I didn't do great last year and didn't get into the top 10k, which was my goal.

Just updated my blog to highlight two way rotations. Spreading the wealth for everyone.

Season Ticker and Rotation Finder are available from the blog sidebar for anyone interested in doing some pre-season homework 😉

    While I'm at it, anyone who hasn't seen the work TW and Berbagod are doing around rotations, I would highly recommend it;

I know. Most of the "perfect rotations" this year start off bad. there are some hidden gems within the 15/19 home/away rotations though 😉

Norwich/Stoke is good if you think they can keep up last season clean sheet record

I was thinking that Southampton/West Ham defense could be budget pairings whose teams could actually keep clean sheets and score, beyond the appealing price.

That rotation seems to be very popular. Problems going to be finding the West Ham player to pair up.

A Southampton defender is going to be in every RMT

I was slightly concerned when I read that O'Brien would be competing for a place with Demel. Is Rat considered more of a definite starter (I know nothing a bout him).

Not sure I fancy a West Ham defender - they'll have had a price bump and their clean sheets weren't easy to predict last year; 5 of their 11 were away from home and 1 of the home ones was against Man City. Makes it tricky getting the rotation right.

More clean sheets away than at home in their promotion year too - surprisingly resilient on the road. If you factor them into a rotation I think it has to more or less ignore home/away.

Big Sam with his 9 men behind the ball, wack it up to Carroll/Nolan tactics working well.

They were terrible away from home attacking wise

I've won my cash leagues between friends the last two years massively down to advice I've got on here so it's worth the price alone.

Use the ticker and dabbled with the RMT feature but definitely want to start using the comparison tool for the first time this season and hopefully further improve on my rank of 3k from last year 😀

Would be very edgy if I were a Sunderland fan, unless they add some real quality during the summer. These statements by Di Canio would not reassure me, if fact they send alarm bells ringing. After the signing of David Moberg and Duncan Watmore, Di Canio insists he will further strenghten the squad. I'm sorry but have these initial purchases actually strenghtened the squad to begin with. I don't think so at all. He then praises Migolet, and states how crucial he was to what they achieved last season ( avoiding relagation). With him moved on to pastures new, it basically confirms they are now weaker in an area of the pitch they so heavily relied on. Add to this the almost certain depature of Sessengon, one of their few shining lights, and all looks far from rosy. http://www.thesportreview.com/tsr/2013/06/sunderland-transfers-paolo-di-canio-reassures-fans-over-signings/?

It got easy to figure out though. The team that finished one game tended to start the next.

Ruddy, RvW and possibly Turner for me next season. Would love to squeeze Lowton into a rotation but Villa lack the fixtures to make it work.

Westwood and Delph are the CM pairing I would think.

Both played very well last season especially towards the end.

Will Tevez leaving effect Aguero and Dzeko price wise? They haven't signed a striker / forward to replace him, and the only rumors of Cavani signing seem less and less with each passing day, and I don't see them barking on about anyone else in that position apart from Cavani.
With Dzeko and Aguero both seemingly set for price drops, could Tevez leaving have them remaining the same? Also rumours of Dzeko leaving too which is dire considering when the man is on form he is in BEAST MODE.

Dzeko will not get as high as 10.5

Aguero will be around 11 again I think

Eh? Price rise for both (massive for Dzeko) despite neither scoring bundles of goals last year?

        By 8.5-9 and 10-11 I imagine.

I think City will get someone huge, same stature of Aguero and Dzeko will be a distant third, if he's even destined to stay at the Etihad, which I doubt he will (based on nothing more than conjecture).

Man City will not win the PL with Dzeko and Aguero as options up front. If you deduct the goals Tevez has provided for City, plus those he set up for others, it would paint a far less impressive picture. They simply have to sign a high class striker, who can fit into a system with Aguero. The probem is finding one.

A bargain Milan should have had. Tevez wanted to come to us but our management is useless, won't buy quality players until they've sold a crap player in the same position 😥
