Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Gaston Ramirez

Arriving at Southampton on the final day of last summer’s transfer window, Gaston Ramirez’s acquisition was regarded as a real coup for the Premier League new boys. The Uruguayan signed on for a club record fee believed to be in the region of £12m and, having been favourably priced across the Fantasy games, looked a genuine mid-price option for our five man midfields:

By the end of the season, however, Ramirez was sitting in the St Mary’s stands after being banned for the final three matches, with his debut campaign in the English top-flight turning out patchy at best. A total of five goals and four assists over 26 appearances, supplemented by eight Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points saw Ramirez end the season on 88 points – given that Rickie Lambert racked up 187 points as the lone forward, it’s fair to say that the former Bologna man had plenty room for improvement next time out.

Key Factors

  • On the positive side, Ramirez’s limited returns from his role in “the hole” is likely to be good news for his price across the Fantasy games next time round. While Lambert’s exploits will ensure a hefty hike and perhaps force him out of many Fantasy plans, Ramirez should remain around the 6.0 mark in FPL – given that mid-price midfield options such as Michu, Marouane Fellaini and Kevin Nolan are all set to rise in cost, Ramirez may well step up as a strong value option.

  • Ramirez’s first season in the Premier League was also blighted by a leg problem. With his game time limited, the new boy made just 20 starts and six sub appearances for the Saints and featured for a total of 1,679 minutes compared to Lambert’s 3,126 minutes – while he delivered only 47% of Lambert’s FPL points haul, then, he only played 53% of the forward’s game time. If he remains injury-free next time round and providing Pochettino curbs his penchant for subbing Ramirez off midway through the second period of matches, the Uruguayan will be optimistic of mirroring his final season in Serie A, which harvested eight goals and four assists.

  • Although Southampton stuttered towards the end of the previous campaign, Ramirez hinted at an upturn in performance at St Mary’s. The Uruguayan notched in two of his final four home appearances before receiving his marching orders for an elbowing incident involving Shane Long in Gameweek 35 – Mauricio Pochettino has already talked up his star man’s potential for next time out, following a difficult settling-in period. Certainly, the 2013/14 fixture list affords Ramirez the perfect platform to kick on – Southampton’s first six home fixtures look particularly strong (SUN, WHM, CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL) and with trips to West Brom, Norwich and Stoke also included in the opening 11 Gameweeks, the Saints could barely have wished for a kinder opening run.

  • As Pochettino prepares for his first full season in charge, he’ll be buoyed by some of his side’s home results against the top eight last time round. Since taking the reins last January, the Argentine saw his side beat City, Chelsea and Liverpool at St Mary’s, in addition to drawing with Everton in his first match in charge. While there’s no denying Saints finished the season poorly, Pochettino’s side have already shown their capabilities and will be looking to eradicate the inconsistencies that harvested just four points from their final six games – Ramirez will undoubtedly be key to their progression.

Hard to better Drogba or Ronaldo for me, the year of the holy trinity of Ronaldo, Lampard, Gerrard, plus Drogba was insane.

I loved VdV a couple if years ago. I timed buying and selling him perfectly twice, he scored me 84 points from 3 captaincy picks.

What's better: two rotating budget keepers or one elite that plays every game?

Which leads to the question: which of the elite-priced keepers at the top 3 clubs will have the least-leaky defense in front of them? Cech/Chelsea, because of the goal-snuffing Mourinho effect?

This pretty much sums it up. As a general rule picking 2 keepers to rotate yields more points if you pick the right one each week.

Problem is you usually pick the home/better fixture choice and often the other one scores best, so any rotation theorists who just take the higher scoring player each week are not being realistic, whereas the the one biggie is a legit score.

that's also true, the one biggie offers more guarantee of no benched points, but often costs more

            Boruc/Ruddy = 9/9.5
            Hart and 4m = 10.5

you could do a lot with that 1/1.5

Each to their own. I think Buffon is way past it now, surely the most important attribute he has to have is that he can still move about and save the ball as opposed to sweeping.

Cant agree about Milner or Kolarov being good in any position really.

Song - meh - I could name a few holding mids who are so much better... should have stayed at Arsenal really as he doesnt get a game with that Barca midfield.

Arsenal could use those players, but the lack of a dependable central forward goal-scorer was glartingly obvious. I think central forward should be the priority, and from a fantasy perspective will make Arsenal an attractive possibility attackwise.

    - Tevez to Juve 10m done deal
    - City not paying the money for Cavani
    - Aguero & Dzeko only two strikers left
    - City with some nice opening fixtures

I'm a pro evo man as well. Just prefer after all these years. Not keen on online play anyway., although recognise Fifa is better at that ..I always get beaten by children...best I play the computer, less humiliating.

do Pro Evo use real names for players and stuff, that's what bugs me most about it, the lack of real names and badges. I like the fact it has the CL, but it's not enough to tempt me to go back

No still the stupid names. I change the ones I get into my master league team though. Love getting players from the past in the master league. That's my favourite part of it. Currently playing as Real Madrid, with Gullit in midfield and George Best and Michael Laudrup up front with Ronaldo.

Excluding the top 6 of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham which team do you see has the surprise package challenging for a top 6 / 7th place?

I was 50/50 on whether to include Everton, they did finish above Liverpool, but with a manager who has been at a team which always seemed to narrowly miss relegation I have yet to be persuaded.

I think Norwich and Swansea are going to improve and push for higher places in the table, I would of said WBA, but without Lukaku goals, I just dont see it...

11/12. Remember wildcarding to get captain America in and he repaid with an hat-trick. Last season was boring I found but that of been because the Premier League was generally boring. 10/11 was good with Adam, Carroll and the Newcastle/Swansea cheap as chips backline

Yep, 10/11 was a good year too.

I think the best years are ones with lots of choice of players and where you win something in a nail biting finish.

As much as I loved the holy trinity era of Ronaldo/Lampard and Gerrard they did make the game very boring.

I remember having him that week (think it was a DGW with Birmingham as well) but I had him and RvP, who also got a hatty.

At that point RvP was just coming back from injury and no one in my ML had him, I was the first to clock his 45 minute 1 goal cameo and drafted him in. i must have gained about 50 points on everyone just through RvP

Then he got a DGW and every fecker had him

Difference between 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 and 4-5-1. I see a lot of times in articles here they talk about 4-3-3 and "the most advanced central midfielder". I've always felt that when you are talking about 4-3-3 you have two central midfielders (naturally one might have a slightly more attacking personality than the other, but essentially the same role) and one anchor man (Makelele for instance, in Mourinho's 4-3-3).

The reason I bring this up is that I'm thinking about Gerrard's role next season. If Liverpool play 4-2-3-1, he'll get a deeper defensive midfielder role, alongside Lucas (who will play in the anchor role in all formations anyways). If they play 4-3-3 he'll play alongside Allen in central midfield, again with Lucas taking the anchor role. I think that 4-3-3 gives Gerrard much more freedom to attacking than 4-2-3-1. This also applies to for instance City, who sometimes tinkered with 4-5-1 last season. Both 4-3-3 and 4-5-1 have no player with the #10 role, which, if teams go for these formations, affect the FPL potential of their midfielders. The wikipedia representations of these formations is as far as I see correct. Thoughts?

      Gerrard Lucas
      Aspas MK Coutinho

If we sell a few players we would be able to afford of it. Wages however would be a stumbling block, but if he want to play for a club were the fans love him and he feels at home then he should be willing to accept less.

I really cant bring myself to get excited over any England game anymore. I used to love internationals and went to the old Wembley many times.

Unfortunately nowadays I dont think the England players want to be there and it shows. Lack of passion, imagination, technical ability, confidence, intelligence and most of all a distinct lack of direction from the FA. However there is no excuse for a England international not being able to control and pass a football which when I have watched England recently most of the team are guilty of.

The saddest thing about the whole situation is that the Under 21s are no different. When Stuart Pearce is the manager you know that isnt ideal - this is a man who brings on a goalkeeper or centre half to play up front when he is chasing a game even when he has forwards on the bench. What is worse is that he is being replaces by another failed manager in Gareth Southgate - another yes man for the FA.

Get rid of old fashioned managers, bring in more dynamic, modern coaches who understand the way top domestic teams set up and play and can inspire the players.

I know this isnt what you asked and in response no I am not going but i needed a rant! thanks!

I completely agree with all of your points.

England players aren't interested anymore they have a substantial amount of pressure in every tournament. They are a group of slightly better than average players who get paid a lot more than they deserve. It doesnt help that the press think they are invincible.

If i was English id be sick of it all and despite building George Park (or whatever its called) being a step in the right direction they need the quality. Im hearing that because of this wonder park England should be winning the World Cup in Qatar (if not before) ... Madness!

West Ham may be close to signing Montero, would make another intersting midfield option, http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/jun/26/west-ham-signing-jefferson-montero
