Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Gaston Ramirez

Arriving at Southampton on the final day of last summer’s transfer window, Gaston Ramirez’s acquisition was regarded as a real coup for the Premier League new boys. The Uruguayan signed on for a club record fee believed to be in the region of £12m and, having been favourably priced across the Fantasy games, looked a genuine mid-price option for our five man midfields:

By the end of the season, however, Ramirez was sitting in the St Mary’s stands after being banned for the final three matches, with his debut campaign in the English top-flight turning out patchy at best. A total of five goals and four assists over 26 appearances, supplemented by eight Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points saw Ramirez end the season on 88 points – given that Rickie Lambert racked up 187 points as the lone forward, it’s fair to say that the former Bologna man had plenty room for improvement next time out.

Key Factors

  • On the positive side, Ramirez’s limited returns from his role in “the hole” is likely to be good news for his price across the Fantasy games next time round. While Lambert’s exploits will ensure a hefty hike and perhaps force him out of many Fantasy plans, Ramirez should remain around the 6.0 mark in FPL – given that mid-price midfield options such as Michu, Marouane Fellaini and Kevin Nolan are all set to rise in cost, Ramirez may well step up as a strong value option.

  • Ramirez’s first season in the Premier League was also blighted by a leg problem. With his game time limited, the new boy made just 20 starts and six sub appearances for the Saints and featured for a total of 1,679 minutes compared to Lambert’s 3,126 minutes – while he delivered only 47% of Lambert’s FPL points haul, then, he only played 53% of the forward’s game time. If he remains injury-free next time round and providing Pochettino curbs his penchant for subbing Ramirez off midway through the second period of matches, the Uruguayan will be optimistic of mirroring his final season in Serie A, which harvested eight goals and four assists.

  • Although Southampton stuttered towards the end of the previous campaign, Ramirez hinted at an upturn in performance at St Mary’s. The Uruguayan notched in two of his final four home appearances before receiving his marching orders for an elbowing incident involving Shane Long in Gameweek 35 – Mauricio Pochettino has already talked up his star man’s potential for next time out, following a difficult settling-in period. Certainly, the 2013/14 fixture list affords Ramirez the perfect platform to kick on – Southampton’s first six home fixtures look particularly strong (SUN, WHM, CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL) and with trips to West Brom, Norwich and Stoke also included in the opening 11 Gameweeks, the Saints could barely have wished for a kinder opening run.

  • As Pochettino prepares for his first full season in charge, he’ll be buoyed by some of his side’s home results against the top eight last time round. Since taking the reins last January, the Argentine saw his side beat City, Chelsea and Liverpool at St Mary’s, in addition to drawing with Everton in his first match in charge. While there’s no denying Saints finished the season poorly, Pochettino’s side have already shown their capabilities and will be looking to eradicate the inconsistencies that harvested just four points from their final six games – Ramirez will undoubtedly be key to their progression.

I hate that Boruc rotates nicely with everyone. I'm not keen on a Sot defence double up and one of Shaw or Clyne will be in my defence...

doubling up will give you this:

if your other GK also has a good fixture then u can play him while u play clyne/shaw in defence!!!

"I think that Higuain is now closer to Arsenal," he told TMW.

"Juventus are a great club, but Gonzalo is too expensive for them. Napoli are a strong side and that place represents a lot for Argentines.

"Saying that, I can't deny that Gonzalo is now close to Arsenal."

Probably old news to you lot.

I have a rule. Never follow till account is verified.
Once Henry was said to have joined twitter. Someone famous (forgot who) even tweeted confirming it was him, but turns out it was a hoax.
Before I realised it was a fake ID, I had written over 20 tweets to him. When I found out that it was a fake I nearly cried.
BTW, he had almost 60k followers by then.

That's not entirely true. Giroud was expected to be first choice by most, though not all. And to be fair they priced Giroud and Podolski pretty aptly according to their skill.

I'd imagine Liverpool have a vast amount of income. They're a huge side - I know they've not been competing for the title for a long time now but they still have a huge fan base from when they were dominating. Put it this way, if Chelsea, City and Utd aren't worried about FFP then I don't see why Liverpool should be. They'll probably cover a large portion of their spend with the sale of Suarez in this window anyway.

They have the third highest net spend. They're in the negative by a HUGE amount.
CL gets in revenues of almost 30m each season, a competition which Liverpool haven't qualified for in a long time.
Add to that the fact that their sponsors will give them lesser money due to non-European duties, and that they have a small stadium with low matchday income they are in trouble.
And here I'm not even counting the crappy deals which they made, which cost them a lot in the first place.

Yeah, it doesn't look good when you put it like that. I just find it difficult to imagine they haven't got plans in place which take FFP into account. Would be incredible for a club the size of Liverpool to qualify and then be told they can't compete. I still see them as being a little way off top 4 so maybe it's a cunning plan to avoid having to play europa cup?

NESV run LFC, a shrewder bunch of businessmen you'd be hard pushed to find. They're on a much more financially stable footing than most clubs in the Premier League. Like Jimmy says the club has a huge international fan base. I don't think Swansea will sell too many jersies or bring in big sponsors just cos they're in Europa League.

No. You're right. I'm a LFC supporter but it looks like a sad day for football when a 'big club' like Liverpool can get away with a 15m loss like that. They gained on Torres sale and surely will gain on Suarez sale. And then they talk about spending 20m + on Mkhitaryan, a man who scores goals in the mighty league of Ukraine. I don't understand FFP fully, to me it looks like football will be like Formula 1, the big clubs will get bigger and always draw the best players.

Yeah I know about Cesc. He is expected to be ok for the game but if not Silva would play. I guess it's too expensive to gamble on either of them.

                        Front 3 do you have?

                        Hulk or Fred?

Stick with Casillas and Alba so I have 2 Spain, 2 Brazil or get Cesar/Thiago Silva instead?

Considering how important it is to get off to get a good start and how unpredictable the start of the season often is, what does everyone think about making a team which will be very strong fixtures wise for the first 3 fixtures with the intention of wildcarding in the first international break after GW3.

The sort of team I've come up with is:
    Ruddy 4.0
    CHE MCY SUN WHM 4.0
Bale Mata Hazard(will change one of the two after GW1 to Silva/Walcott/whoever) Nolan 4.5
    Aguero Wolf 4.5

And I'm almost certain that should come very close to 100m

There's no balance to your team you see. Your very strong in places and very weak in places. But it's better to be wreaking the backs than the forwards.

but Carroll will likely be harder to get in to your team than Jarvis

        Jarivs will be 5.5

well, usually you don't an e-mail will suffice, it's the person letting you the flat who will likely speak to the person

That said, if, like me, you're lucky enough to have a lecturer who offered to be a reference for me should I ever need it, when I left uni, then it's all good 😀

        It's mainly for attacking rotations

I'm considering some sort of 3 way rotation involving

Koren, Jarvis and RvW so I can get big hitters in the rest of the attacking slots

so RvP, Aguero, Bale, Hazard, Coutinho
