Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Luke Shaw

Having played just a single FA Cup match prior to the previous campaign, it’s fair to say little was expected of Luke Shaw upon Southampton’s return to the top-flight. A product of the club’s youth academy, he looked firmly behind Danny Fox in the left-back pecking order but after climbing off the bench towards the end of the Gameweek 10 defeat at West Brom, the youngster soon established himself as a first-team regular.

Initially selected by Nigel Adkins and subsequently under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, Shaw went on to start 22 of the Saints’ remaining 28 league matches, with only a couple of minor knocks and a brief illness limiting his game time over the rest of the season. A series of consistent displays and comparisons with fellow-Southampton academy graduate Gareth Bale already have the suitors circling but, despite being linked with the likes of Chelsea and United, the teenager is expected to remain at St Mary’s as Pochettino’s side look to better last term’s 14th place finish.

Key Factors

  • Analysing Southampton’s defensive displays, the stats highlight how they gradually improved under both managers last season. The first 10 Gameweeks under Adkins saw the Saints concede 28 times, while the following 12 matches harvested 12 goals against before Pochettino took over. The Argentine’s installation saw his side take a step backwards, shipping 11 goals in six games, before his high pressing game proved dividend, with just nine goals against in the final 10 Gameweeks. With Pochettino’s future looking assured, the Saints could well benefit from less chopping and changing at the helm next time round.

  • Ultimately, with 60 goals against in 2012/13, Southampton were one of the poorest overall backlines. Given that only four defences conceded more goals, it’s fair to assume that they will remain in the budget bracket across the Fantasy games – a price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards for Shaw and, with new boy Dejan Lovren adding plenty quality at centre-half, the Saints could prove strong value at the back next time round.

  • While the likes of Lovren and keeper Artur Boruc offer up alternatives at the back, Southampton’s 4-2-3-1 system and high pressing game seems tailor made for both Shaw and fellow full-back Nathaniel Clyne to forage forward and offer plenty pace, width and creativity from deep. Granted, he failed to produce any attacking returns last term but, having grown accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League, Shaw may well be set to justify the level of interest shown by many of the top-flight’s elite.

  • Delving deeper into the defensive data, Shaw’s presence at the back made a considerable difference to the Saints’ resilience. They conceded 37 goals in the 16 matches without him in the first XI, or 2.3 goals per game, compared to just 23 goals against in the left-back’s 22 starts – just over one goal a game conceded; a substantial difference which bodes well for his game time over the season ahead.

  • The opening fixtures have fallen firmly in Pochettino’s favour as he looks to get off to a strong start. Having already engineered home wins over the likes of Chelsea, City and Liverpool during his short spell in charge, the Argentine will be buoyed by a schedule which hands his side seven enticing opening fixtures (SUN, WHM, CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL, AVL) at St Mary’s. As mentioned in one of our recent rotation articles, pairing Shaw with a West Ham backline option looks a viable tactic over the first few months of the campaign.

Has anyone had any ff related premonitions or omens, for example over the last few days I've thought about a certain forward signed for my local team debating wether to have him as an option in my forthcoming team, today on my delivery (I'm a postman by the way) who do I happen to find has moved into one of my calls....yes, the one and the same player. Now does this bode well for me....or not?

Yeah, if I had a vision, I would see myself falling apart at the end of the season like I always do. Save the WC, or don't, play the rotation, stick to fixtures, shake a corn cob at an emblem of modernity, smother a kitten. Nothing works. For the record, and I'm not sure there ever needs to be one, I have never had a fantasy football dream, premonition, omen, vision, insight or any other freakish mental break. I just know I am never going to win.

    My resolutions for FPL 2013-13...
    1) No Knee-Jerk transfers before the entire GW and any midweek games are over
    2) No selecting the maximum number of players from my favorite team unless they are on great form
    3) Save transfers as much as possible and not do more than 40 regular (not WC) transfers in the whole season

Any cricket fans out there? This is one of the most unique and interesting games, I've come across

    http://hitwicket.com/

If this was there for football, this site could have gone ballistic. It's basically a super-intelligent community based strategy game. Think of it like football manager, brought on the web, and one which you can play against community members. The whole idea behind the game is sheer brilliance, and I thought the least I could do is share it.

What is the rotation like with Mannone and Boruc?

          Luiz, Turner, Figueroa, 4.5, 4.0/4.5

Since it's RMTB (Rate My Team Budget) time:

    Mignolet - 4.0

I agree that I'm being a little optimistic but ...

        12 for Cavani? No way.
11 for Hazard sounds very steep too.
        5.5 for Turner? 😯
And Mirallas got fewer points last season than Pienaar got every season that he was 6.5

So many weeks to go 🙁 I want some prices now, man 😀

Yeah maybe I am being a little too pessimistic but in my experience even my pessimism is surpassed when the prices actually get released.

I see the Norwich defenders bassong and turner having the same rises as shawx and huth almost last year. hazard might come in at 10.5 maybe?

If I was being optimistic I would go with 5m turner, 11.5 Cavani (if he comes for 50m they are not going to price him cheap), 10.5 hazard, 6.5 mirallas. That would give you an extra 2.5 but still leave you 2m out I think?

You're probably right. Although I'd point out that Silva in 2011-12 got very similar points to Hazard and was subsequently priced at 10m

I just checked there and you are right hazard only got 6pts more so yeah hopefully he might come in at 10 with mata at 10.5 maybe.

You will still be short 1.5m then but at least its getting close. If I have overestimated a few other prices you might be able to get it.

I think this shows the quandary people will be in if they try and fit RVP into their teams tho.

I'd say it is most likely he will be classifies as a defender coming in at around 4.5m which will probably make it hard to take a punt on him as he is neither dirt cheap which you want for your promotion team defender or a player you can play week in week out.

Hey question re rotation (Tommy please jump in here), how important is it to have forward rotation, I totally get defensive rotation, but I've always tended to play 3 big hitters up front, 4 nailed on decent midfielders and then a midfield benchwarmer......

This makes life simple in that you only have to think about your defensive rotations and they're usually straight forward as I tend to favour 1 + 2 + 2 (again to aid front loading).....

Question is am I missing out not having forward rotation?

Assuming your forward players will be mostly heavy hitters, rotation isn't necessary unless your going with cheapies, in which case the most creative players in a good rotating team should be chosen.

Depends where the value players are saint

You can rotate your 3rd striker and 5th mid each gw if you have a players who are only any good at home or v weak opposition making their points easy to predict.

The downside is if you don't have easily predictable points scoring players then you could end up rotating someone like lambert last year who scored more away than at home.

Some people rotate two budget mids also depending on fixtures but I think budget is going to be very tight this season and you will see people going with a cheap 5th mid who might play but will never be starting in their team unless we see another puncheon or sterling show up which is unlikely.

Sorry for the late reply and don't know whether you will read this but for me its a no brainer to start with a rotation before the reliable cheapos start showing themselves. Simply find two 4.5 to 5.5 mil players to rotate on attacking value give you a reason for their inclusion. Exact same logic applies as when you are thinking about your backline. You are trying to weight the odds in your favour. Granted an attacking player has more potential to score away from home but that only gives you flexibility when coming up with the rotations to start with. You shouldn't be rotating 6mil and above players such as Lambert. They should be able to stand by their own as a fixture man or punt player in my terms.

The other reason is budget saving to get that extra big hitter. 10 mil on a rotation is cheaper than having a 6.5mil constant in your 11 and a 4.5 bench warmer.

Wigan are in it so they don't count. Spurs have Bale, a bigger squad and experience in dealing with the high turnaround of fixtures.

Swansea don't have the squad depth for Europa and we saw how it affected Newcastle last season.

Wigan will probably go further than Spurs in the Europa next season...

No, only Wigan, Spurs and Swansea are in it. Smaller PL teams have traditionally suffered in the PL (Stoke and Newcastle in recent seasons) because they simply don't have big enough squads to cope with the extra games. Most people are expecting Swansea to suffer the same fate.

I guess the thinking is the same effect it had on Newcastle last year will happen to Swansea.

Imagine if Everton lined up in a 3-4-3/3-5-2 like this. There'd be so many great FPL options

        Coleman--Gibson--Osman--Baines
        ---------------------Honda
        ---------------Fellaini---Mirrallas

I hope not. Already too many great FPL players at Everton. Would be difficult to only pick 3.

He said himself he wanted to play for a top club and become a top player. No offense to Everton, but I think he'd prefer Milan

More CSs, better players to finish his many chances created. If he gets set pieces, which is possible, he will almost be essential imo 🙂

      More clean sheets at United.
More likely to have his chances finished at United.
      Loses penalties etc. at United.

Depends on the price for me. If he were to go up as a result of the switch, I wouldn't be interested.
