Scout Report – Nicolas Anelka

Steve Clarke moved to solve his forward dilemma earlier this week by snapping up the much-travelled Nicolas Anelka on a one-year contract, with the option of a further season. The Frenchman arrives at the Hawthorns as a free agent, having plied his trade at Italian club Juventus for the final five months of the previous campaign.

The 34-year-old spent nine months with Clarke at Chelsea during the latter’s time as a coach at Stamford Bridge and admitted the Scot’s presence at the Hawthorns was key to his decision:

“I know the club and I know the head coach which was very important for me. He knows how to use me on the pitch which is important later on in your career. I know he likes to play football and that’s why I signed here. He knows me and I know him.”

The History

The Baggies will be Anelka’s sixth English club in a career that began back at Paris St Germain in the 1995/96 season. Snapped up by Arsenal in February 1997, he produced 23 goals in 65 first-team appearances before earning a big-money move to Real Madrid. His time at the Bernabeu was something of a let-down, however, with a mere two goals in 19 La Liga matches before he returned to PSG after just a year in Spain.

Anelka lasted a season-and-a-half in France second time around, returning 10 goals in 39 matches before Liverpool picked him up for the latter part of the 2001/02 season. After four goals in 20 games for the Reds, Anelka winged his way to Man City, where his time was a little more successful. Over two-and-a-half years at the Etihad, the Frenchman racked up 38 goals from 89 appearances before this time moving to Turkey to ply his trade for Fenerbahce – 14 goals in 39 games persuaded Bolton to shell out for his services for the 2006/07 season.

A year-and-a-half at the Reebok produced 23 goals and nine assists from 59 league games before Chelsea came calling in January 2008. Over three full campaigns and a couple of half seasons at Stamford Bridge Anelka registered 38 goals and 30 assists from 125 league matches before once again upping sticks, with a move to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua in January 2012. After producing three goals and six assists from 22 matches, he was farmed out on loan to Juventus in January earlier this year but made just two league appearances for the Serie A outfit and failed to find the net. On the international stage, Anelka has turned out on 69 occasions for the French senior side, scoring 14 times.

The Prospects

With last season’s top scorer Romelu Lukaku having returned to Chelsea after the end of a one-year loan spell, Clarke is in desperate need of extra firepower. The Belgian played a part in 21 of West Brom’s 53 goals over 2012/13, finding the net on 17 occasions in addition to supplying four assists – bearing in mind Shane Long notched just eight goals in 34 appearances, Peter Odemwingie is itching for a way out and Marc-Antoine Fortune has already been released on a free transfer, the Baggies are clearly lacking in frontline alternatives.

Certainly, Clarke seems to have plenty faith in the newly-acquired Frenchman. Speaking to the local press upon completion of the deal, the West Brom boss backed Anelka to make an impact upon his return to the English top-flight.

“We are missing a bit of firepower from last year – we’re trying to put that right – and to kick off with the signing of Nicolas at the start of the summer is a great boost for everyone at the club. He’s a player I have worked with before as I was at Chelsea when they signed him. He’s got a great work ethic, looks after himself and is a consummate professional. If you add that to the obvious talent he’s got, I think he can prove to be a really top signing for the club.”

Given the current shortage of forwards, Clarke’s shopping spree is likely to continue over the summer – the likes of Franco Di Santo, Salomon Kalou, Ola Toivonen and Matej Vydra have all been linked with a potential move to the Hawthorns over the last couple of days. As a result, it’s perhaps only when the transfer window comes to a close that we are likely to fully assess Anelka’s impact – given that Clarke rolled out a lone striker system in all but six of last term’s matches, though, the Frenchman may well find game time on the flank thanks to his versatility; a factor that would no doubt dent his appeal from a Fantasy perspective.

Expected to come in as a mid-price forward across the Fantasy games, a starting cost of around 6.5 looks the likeliest scenario in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for Anelka. While it’s somewhat unlikely he’ll be able to replicate Lukaku’s bustling displays, he has, nevertheless, produced double figure goal hauls in six Premier League seasons thus far and, if handed the lone forward role in Clarke’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, he may well offer us a relatively budget-friendly option for our three man frontlines over the short-term. With home games against Southampton, Swansea and Sunderland allied with a trip to Fulham in the opening five Gameweeks, the initial schedule smiles kindly on Clarke’s side as he looks to push on from last term’s eight place finish.

Howard Wilkinson (Leeds Utd) won the year before the Premiership was created but then Man Utd bought Cantona and the rest is history.

This is as much about money as Englishness

Cantonal wasn't an expensive purchase at all, most clubs in the league could have afforded him. You have a point in principle but have picked the wrong example.

Yes they did, however it wasn't about money. Ferguson asked Wilkinson about a different player, and Wilkinson said No, but you can have Cantona if you want, he's not my type of player. Only cost about a million, from memory.

morning chaps. Been off the scene, holidays and head in fantasy NRL this time of year.

Have updated my FPL data sheet with some season prices I expect to represent value
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqsCkAPbwxCCdEh3d2dmN0xEYm05enh1Q0FiMnY1amc&om=true#gid=0

These are price ratings, not prediction so don't take offence of them, nor my index. Just enjoy the fact I'm giving you a whole bunch of FPL data in offline excel format 😆

Let me know if any questions. Price EVs were based on a formula I created to take into account Pts per minute performance against potential pricing
    ENJOY! (bring on the season...)

obv know i'm not going to get that price RVP, but it's a prediction of what price will represent value.

I'm finding value such a difficult concept in FPL, especially when dealing with player top point scorer back to back seasons :S

In that case it's the great start. Yaya is my base player & don't think he is worth the 8 that he will probably start. 7.5 is the better value.

what you said there about yaya exactly where my price sheet is at.

my background is drawing up prices for horse bookies... so there will be a lot of thfavoured runners conservatively priced, whereby some value of players around the 5.0 bracket that i have rated 5.5

ok, not a bad way of looking at it.

I created with more a vs expectation/mean whereby each player needs to run at 0.3-0.4ish points per minute, per half million in price. sounds more complicated than it is.

I need to sleep on it as to whether i want to create realistic price predictions, or stick with a price rating.

the issue i have is i already know RVB and Gbale are first 2 drafted in my squad, yet against my formula I will be taking "under the odds".

sheet remains a bit of watch this space. will do another round of update just before prices come out i think, then update it with all of the new players post July 19 :d

VERY good point Charlie. I don''t for a second claim that there is edge to be gained at the top of the market. the best players are the best players. there's an old saying in racing (or two)

            "any price a winner"
"the little fish are sweet" (referring to backing short odds-on)

Am I understanding correctly that column D represents the price at which , or below which, you consider the player to be offering good value for this season?

That's correct. It is based on last seasons figures it seems though & players like Rooney are probably undervalued if given fair playing time.

OK thanks. Seems to work well as a price prediction tool though, with very few prices (RVP etc) looking unrealistic, and pinpointing a few potential bargains (Rooney, as you say) who, given a better start this year would be a snip.

. . . and even better as a bench mark for value to compare against the actual prices when they come out. Example; Coutinho, who I am hoping to see priced 8/8.5 against a value price of up to 9

correct guys. it's on last year's performance so if you are a fan ofguero orRooney. Look away.

I was tempted to do last 2 seasons, but stuck with what's most recent, in both price and performance terms

I'd like to issue a statement on team Aston Villas acquisition of Lionel Messi :
“We are missing a bit of firepower from last year – we’re trying to put that right – and to kick off with the signing of Messi at the start of the summer is a great boost for everyone at the club. He’s a player I have worked with before as I was at Barcelona when they signed him. He’s got a great work ethic, looks after himself and is a consummate professional. If you add that to the obvious talent he’s got, I think he can prove to be a really top signing for the club.”
This Marquee signing shows the intent of the club and I'm sure the supporters will now see the direction were taking , and no Messi will not be paired with Darren Bent - I just can't see how they can play together.

Tbh TM we've been a little unlucky so far in our bids AB odd token out here and there but we decided to go all out for Messi and 2 cheapies it looks like it paid off , whether we paid too much for Messi (65) only time will tell but hopefully a champions league spot is attainable .
Our strategy from here really dictates it self but my team are all over this and we know the direction were going.

5th last, got Suarez (42) for 14 last night. I think the lack of tokens will mean others will swallow you up plus the fact that all your striker spots are taken & that's where the money is.

I am 80.5m behind with 39 extra tokens. I am pretty confident WBA will pass you with some luck. 🙂

You had no choice, the striker round was the best to make ground. Perhaps finding a 3rd bargain instead of Messi was a better way though? 65% of your budget for probably less than half of the total your team will get.

I've always wondered how much of fpl is luck. This will be my fourth season. In my first (10/11), I was a casual player and finished around 210,000. Then my first proper season (11/12), I finished 7100 with a lot of my decisions and transfers working well for me. But then last season I finished an ugly 122,000 having played seriouslymost of the season. I felt throughout the season I couldn't do anything right, the majority of my transfers failed along with my a lot of captain picks. This lead my to feel that fpl must be mainly luck, 60% maybe.

However, looking at some people on here, in particular Mark and Evs, they regularly show that it is possible to have great seaons year after year. Mark's worst season ended with him finishing 30,000 which is still a respectable rank, and Evs worst season was 10,000 which again is absolutely fantastic. Both are very consistent with where they finish and on average, that is with in the top 10,000.

So I have come to the conclusion that to finish in and around the 10,000th mark, skill alone can be enough, with obviously a bit of luck along the way, but all in all the knowledge and know how can be enough. Certainly to find yourself fighting for the top spot towards the end of the season, a lot of luck is needed throughout. Captain picks have to come up trumps 30 of the 38 gameweeks, transfers have to be worth while, and that is where the luck comes in for people at the top.

So my conclusion is to get a highly respectable rank of being inside the top 20,000 to 5000 is around 20% luck, and to be fighting inside the top 5000 right to 1st between has got to be 50% to 70% luck.

    Thoughts??

I'd say you're probably right in that you need up to 70% luck to finish in the top 5000, and a lot of that luck is near the start, especially for those challenging to win the whole thing.

Think that 70% is way over the mark.

That's just one person though, there will always be an anomaly. Of course skill has played a major part for him, but this site is full of 'skilled' players who don't get that high. The amount of time and effort some of us on this site put in without reaching the dizzy heights is pretty high.

I have to say I never understand how people calculate these percentages and what they mean!
what does 20% luck mean? 20%, 50%, 70% of what?
your final rank? if I have no luck I'll have a rank which is 20% worse?

I can see why people get confused, the way I see it is the game as a whole involves the manager using his knowledge and the stats available to him to make the most logical decision. The luck comes in when his captain picks regularly come good as well as transfers. Obviously the more luck they get the higher the percentage. For example person A captains Bale for 3 weeks running and he gets 24, 36, and 14 points. Player B hasn't captained him at all during that time and decides to captain the next gw. He scores him 4 points. Picking Bale isn't a bad decision but he drew a blank and that is where the luck element comes in.

I know where luck comes in, there are a lot of examples.
Whenever we talk about a percentage, it is important to specify what it is relative to, i.e. what is the total that corresponds to 100%. In this discussion I have no idea what it is.

If Negredo joins City, will Aguero play on the left wing?

It's possible but is Negredo being bought as a first choice striker or for squad depth following the sale of Tevez and Balotelli? Not convinced he's good enough to lead the City attack.

You cannot let the player like Negredo with his quality sit on the bench. 😉

His quality isn't enough to get in the Spanish team ahead of Torres!

I think its the same with a lot of things with torres, they pick the name and not the player

I'd say it's a downgrade to go from Tevez to Negredo.

          Agree

It's an even bigger downgrade to go from Balotelli to Negredo 😉

This. Negredo is good but aguero is world class. Cannot see him demoting him to the wing where his talent won't be utilised.

I expect him to be a starter for City same as Aguero.

That is crazy. How can teams compete with that. The defence isn't bad either 😉

      I'm hoping it'll be a 4-2-3-1

with Nasri on the left, Navas on the right and Silva behind Aguero. I doubt Negredo will be first choice. He could come on when we need a bit more height, but then there's Dzeko. It should be very interesting.

I just think Silva is better through the middle and Nasri looked pretty good towards the end of the season. So many possibilities.

How many will be getting Kone is he becomes newcastle's new number nine. Strikers seem to have flourished at Newcastle recently with Caroll, Ba and Cisse for a while at least banging them in ?
