Technical Area

The Technical Area – Assessing Walcott and Giroud

As Arsenal built on the back of their midweek Champions League win at Fenerbahce by easing past Fulham at the Cottage, Theo Walcott once again missed out on the goals. While Lukas Podolski took centre stage with a double, Olivier Giroud’s opener hinted at a new-found consistency – continuing the scoring spree that racked up eight strikes across the summer friendlies, the Frenchman has now notched in all three of the Gunners’ matches in all competitions.

Walcott, by comparison, has now failed to find the net in any of Arsenal’s matches thus far but with a typically high-scoring north London derby at the Emirates this weekend, his Fantasy owners will be hopeful of a return to form. We take a look at both players’ performances over the first couple of fixtures far.

Average Positions, Gameweek 1 and 2

Walcott’s average position against the Cottagers not only bodes well for next weekend but also backs up Arsene Wenger’s post-match comments on Saturday afternoon. With Jack Wilshere rested, a change in personnel saw Santi Cazorla tuck in behind Giroud, with Podolski afforded a rare start out wide – the Arsenal boss explained such a line-up was designed to alter the visitors’ offensive play:

“We adapted our style of play a bit today but we were very dangerous every time we won the ball back. It was impressive because we had a good mixture of patience and speed in our game and that was positive today. I changed the shape of our team today because I rested Jack. We played with four defenders and six offensive players so we had to make it tighter with numbers but of course when we had the ball we were always looking dangerous.”

Walcott GW2
Walcott GW1

The difference between Arsenal’s first two games is intriguing. In the Gameweek 1 home defeat to Villa (above right), Giroud (12) was the furthest forward when on the ball, with Walcott (14) offering support from a somewhat narrow berth on the right. On the opposite flank, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (15) and replacement Cazorla (19) dropped deep to link up with the midfield, allowing Tomas Rosicky (7), playing in “the hole”, to operate in a more advanced berth behind Giroud.

In the Fulham match (above left), however, Walcott was far and away the Gunners’ most advanced player in possession. While Podolski (9) more or less mirrored the positions of Oxlade-Chamberlain and Cazorla from the previous match out wide on the left, Cazorla – now operating in the centre – dropped far deeper than Rosicky in the previous game. The Spaniard’s more withdrawn role had a knock-on effect on Giroud, whose average position is more in line with Rosicky’s from the Villa match.

Whether this was a tactic designed to take advantage of Fulham’s problem left-back position and/or Adel Taarabt’s reluctance to track back from midfield is unclear, but Cazorla’s natural inclination to look for the ball in deeper areas certainly had an effect through the middle and perhaps explains why Wenger tends to now utilise him on the left, with Rosicky or Wilshere more inclined to offer support further up the field.

Giroud, Gameweek 1 and 2

Tchs BoxShotsShots Box Shots On TargetChances CrtdGoalsAssists

GW25221210

The Frenchman’s 13 touches in the box against Villa was the most of any Arsenal player but he managed just five in the Fulham match as a result – only third best for the visitors. Giroud was a constant menace in the clash with Paul Lambert’s side, producing six shots (all inside the box) though his accuracy was woeful; granted, he found the net in the 3-1 defeat but he managed just a single effort on target.

At Craven Cottage, Giroud’s attempts on goal dropped considerably – he managed just two efforts all, game, both inside the penalty area, though still managed to find the net with one of those attempts. In terms of creativity, the Frenchman produced a couple of “key passes” (passes that lead to efforts on goal) in each of his appearances thus far, though has yet to produce an assist.

Walcott, Gameweek 1 and 2

Tchs BoxShotsShots Box Shots On TargetChances CrtdGoalsAssists
GW18100300

Walcott’s touches in the box were a little less erratic over the first couple of matches. The winger registered eight against Villa and 10 away to Fulham – a total of 18 mirrors Giroud’s across the two Gameweeks. While Walcott mustered a mere one attempt against Paul Lambert’s side, he was easily Arsenal’s main goal threat against the Cottagers; a total of five shots on goal was more than double Giroud’s tally in the 3-1 win.

Encouragingly for his owners, Walcott also offered far greater menace from close-range on Saturday. While he failed to produce a single shot in the box in Gameweek 1, he managed four against Fulham – twice as many as Giroud – and with three efforts on target, he was somewhat unlucky not to open his account for the season. The winger has also teed up plenty of goalscoring opportunities for team-mates, too; three and four chances created in Gameweeks 1 and 2 respectively.

Walcott and Giroud, 2013/14 Versus 2012/13

Finally, we take a look at both players’ averages so far and cast an eye back to the previous campaign to assess whether there has been any noticeable changes in their attacking contributions.

Looking at Walcott’s stats so far, he has averaged almost double the number of touches inside the box (10 compared to 5.4) and has also mirrored his shooting stats from the previous campaign – a clear indication of his offensive potential. His number of efforts per game (3 to 2.7), average shots inside the box (2 to 1.9) and attempts on target (1.5 to 1.2) all offer plenty reason to be optimistic, though he has slightly slowed down in terms of minutes per shot, dropping from a pace of one per 27.7 minutes in 2012/13 to 31.8 minutes over the opening couple of Gameweeks.

Walcott

Tchs BoxShotsShots Box Shots On TargetMins/ShotChance CrtdMins Chance Crtd
2013/149321.531.83.527.3
2012/135.42.71.91.227.71.263.3

When it comes to creativity, though, Walcott has improved dramatically; a sign we can anticipate greater assist potential if his team-mates can finish off his chances. The winger has registered 3.5 “key passes” per game thus far, up from an average of 1.2 last time out – in terms of pace, this is an improvement from 63.3 minutes per goalscoring opportunity created to 27.3 minutes.

Giroud

Tchs BoxShotsShots Box Shots On TargetMins/ShotChance CrtdMins Chance Crtd
2013/14944121242
2012/136.63.12.51.123.1172.7

Giroud has also upped his touches in the box (9.0 up from 6.6) though not quite to the same extent as his team-mate. Both overall shots (4 to 3.1) and efforts inside the box (4 to 2.5) have improved, though Giroud, ironically, has seen a slight decrease in shots on target, despite his upturn in scoring consistency. The Frenchman’s minutes per shot (21 to 23.1) are pretty much on a par with last term, though his creativity has certainly taken a turn for the better; he has registered a “key pass” at a speed of 42 minutes, compared to 72.7 minutes in 2012/13.

Although Giroud has been quick off the mark this time round, it’s perhaps Walcott’s owners who will be afforded the most optimism of the duo in light of the statistics across the opening couple of Gameweeks. Not only has he doubled the number of touches in the box, the wide man has tripled his average of chances created so far – crucial statistics that will surely bode well for his future Fantasy returns as the Gunners prepare for a kind run of fixtures that will surely see plenty Fantasy managers snap up Arsenal’s assets.

yeah got a feeling about people taking a punt on Brady because of set pieces(plus penalties) are the same ones who took a punt on Nicky Shorey during the last season's DGW and miserably failed. lol just clearing my mind.

    VIDIC+ 4.5 MIL vs ROONEY

with the new bonus system favoring defenders when their team manage clean sheets and with the superb fixtures man utd have , do u think it is better to have rooney or vidic (+4,5 mil) for man utd coverage?

it seems that man utd are likely to score a lot and concede very few in their superb run

so is rooney likely to score more in the next 8 weeks or so?

is he worth the extra 4,.5 mil he is priced over vidic?

is it worth instead to double on man utd defense instead of getting rooney?

    thanks

Wouldn't have Vidic for his price. Plenty of cheaper CBs about that will do the bizz: Murner, Burner, Collins, Dawson et al.

If United are to go on a run you really should have both of them.
Vidic at only 0.5 above Shawcross etc and only 1.0 over Reid, Dawson etc is a bargain for the clean sheets and goals that he will get, and BP as you mentioned and Rooney is a no brainer if he continues to start.

What I'm basically saying is that if these too are performing then they are better than all of the alternatives because their FPL prices are the lowest they've ever been!
Vidic 1.5 cheaper than most expensive defender and Rooney 3.5 cheaper than most expensive fwd 🙂

Defensive worries this round. FT used. How to solve this mess (rest of my team is all good)

Welcome to the royal boat FPL. I'm exactly the same bar Luna read Collins ;who to be fair has a good fixture)

No money in bank though and already have hazard and benteke bench warming. I'm even considering the WC.

My thoughts at present are Toure to hangerland/huth unless the injury is superficial then I will drop hazard for a cheaper playing mid.

Chester is pretty much guaranteed a start though, away v Man City (eeek)

I am strongly in the "for-hits" camp. I think taking little 4 point hits from time to time can turn your fantasy season around, and one should never shy away from them. Specially during the start of the season, when falling behind on price changes can be detrimental.
I have no stats to back this up, but personally, I have to get the player in form in my team. Doesn't matter whether it takes a free transfer or 4 point hit or 8 point hit or even higher.

Conversely, chasing form is so often a team's downfall. You have to trust that certain players will come good.

Of course, there are glaring exceptions, but I don't really think like for like trades at this stage are wise.

Absolutely with you on the trust factor. Stats often suggest which player can, and will, come good with time. Walcott could be an example right now.

One more thing, the fun factor. I think being rigid with your team selection takes away the fun factor sometimes. It's better to love and lost and all!

Pochettino also likes Yoshida so I wouldn't be sure on Fonte. Looks ok for now.

Clyne came on to replace the injured Shaw though I would expect Chambers to drop down the pecking order when both Clyne and Shaw are fully fit. Clyne was still coming back from an injury but Pochettino was forced into bringing him on.

I see a few folks getting rid of Terry. I'd really hold fire. Here's my case for you.

The more I look at it, pass completion seems the big stat looking to influence the new bonus system.

To put into perspective, if a defender gets >90% pass completion, he gets 3 BPS. The same as an assist. In two games, its equivalent to a midfielder goal. Its going to play a big role in most games with clean sheets, making the likes of Terry, Vertonghen and Per close to nailed on for a Bonus or more.

If Terry starts most games (likely barring major injuries), you're looking at around 15 CS this season. Add in goals and bonus, you're looking at 170+ at a price of 6.0.

Here's a simple table that you might find useful regarding pass completion - http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/3568/

I wouldn't bog yourself down. Ivano will be in and around there. Terry seems good value but Ivano's massive goal threat + better assist potential should get you around there. With Ivano, you also get versatility which is something Jose loves and should start almost every game.

Summary: Hold onto Ivano if you own him. Get JT if you don't have any Chels def.

    Silva/Walcott/Ramsey/Barkley/Townsend
    RVP/Sturridge/Dzeko

    Or

    Migs/Daniels
    Zab/Coleman/Dawson/Terry/Reid
    Silva/Walcott/Nolan/Barclay/Ward-Prowse
    Aguero/Sturridge/Giroud

Both seem decent. Option 2 gives more scope to switch up the attack because I think once you get RVP inhe has to stay right (bar injury)?

    Quick question:

I did take a hit -4 this week, when i did replace Brayford with Collins, and Welbeck with Podolski.
Now that Podolski is injured, and Toure. My team is a total mess.

Now i thinking about using my WC. Is that an good idea, considering I have alreday taken a hit.

    My team

    Boruc, Mannone
    Collins, Toure, Coleman, Cole, Chester
    Coutinhoi, Silva, Mirallas, Kim, Nolan
    Lukaku, Podolski, Altidore

Or should i do it next week, or even after the international break

    Morning guys 🙂

So Toure is now injured & I'm not so concerned with it as it happened ahead of United game (he's my 3rd choice on bench for GW 3)

That said if it's long term injury I've to sell him but I can wait until next week (thinking to save my transfer this week) to do Toure ➡ Koscielny

I heard many saying Mertesacker is better BAP magnet than Koscielny. Is that true? Afterall they both play CB. Is there any evidence for it? I think it's a wrong perception as people compared their BPS points & not BPS points per minutes.

I think they both do equally well in BPS area with Koscielny giving extra attacking threat for 0.1m less & so he's a better pick?

    Morning dz

    Any tips for 3way defender rotation (3 * 4.0).
Thinking Coleman, Terry + cheapie and have Ward & Chester already.
Southampton Chambers, not nailed on yet?

can you not squeeze in toure or collins for that 3rd defender spot? cuz either of those would be ideal and play those 3 every week

No chance, I was getting Toure for second spot and Collins for third, but now Toure is out.

I'm not convinced Coleman is fixture proof?

No defender is fixture proof, but a 5.0 million defender playing high up the pitch for a strong(ish) club is surely good value.

have to take look for that one
Other possibility is forget Rvp or downgrade one of Coutinho, Walcott, Mirallas and go for that Terry, Coleman, Toure(when fit) line.

Rate My Team is giving a weird (c) assessment.

My 3rd highest predicted scorer is recommended as the captain.
Now I recall understanding this at one point, but that point has gone.

    Anyone with a simple explanation?

Dunno, is ownership factored in? Could be security of starts.

It is something to do with security of start, but the player in question is bound to come off the bench at some point anyway.

        Maybe the Professor is around.
