Moving Target

Moving Target – Oussama Assaidi

Stoke boss Mark Hughes added to his options on the flank earlier this week by snapping up Oussama Assaidi from Liverpool on a season-long loan deal. The 25-year-old becomes the third summer arrival since Hughes’ installation at the Britannia, following the acquisition of defenders Erik Pieters and Marc Muniesa – in an interview with the Potters official website, the Moroccan revealed he was much in demand before opting to join up with the Staffordshire outfit:

“I had a number of options available to me but I really feel that this is the best one for me. I am excited about what the season holds for us. I spoke to the manager here, he told me his hopes for the season and how he sees me fitting into the team and he made it a very attractive move for me to be honest. He plays football the right way, the way that I want to play, and it was quite an easy decision for me to make in the end. I came to the game on Saturday and watched the match and I was impressed. I feel I can fit in here well and help the team to progress.”

The History

A product of the AZ Alkmaar youth academy, Assaidi’s career began in the Dutch second-tier with Omniworld back in 2006. Over the course of a couple of seasons, he registered three goals from 36 appearances before making his way to De Graafschap ahead of the 2008/09 season. Assaidi’s first year at the club produced just a couple of goals from 16 appearances but after netting five times in as many games at the start of the following campaign, he was purchased by Heerenveen prior to the closer of the summer transfer window.

The Moroccan took time to settle in his new surrounds, with just one goal and three assists from 20 league games but stepped up significantly the year after. Assaidi racked up nine goals and 13 assists from 31 top-flight matches and followed that up with 10 goals and seven assists over 27 games in 2011/12. Having played a single match for the Dutch club at the start of last season, he was snapped up by Liverpool for a fee of around £2.4m but failed to impress new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers – all four of his league appearances arrived courtesy of the subs bench.

The Prospects

After falling firmly behind the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling for a role on Liverpool’s left, the move to the Britannia certainly looks in the Moroccan’s best interests. Granted, Stoke have no shortage of wide men to provide competition – Matthew Etherington has started both league games thus far, while Michael Kightly and fit-again Brek Shea are also in the mix.

Crucially, though, Assaidi’s speed on the flank may help edge him ahead in Hughes’ thinking as the new man in charge looks to inject a little more urgency to his side’s play out wide. Upon completion of the deal, the Potters boss explained:

“He’s an exciting player, who has great pace and is very direct and will certainly add another dimension to what we already have at the Club.”

Certainly, Etherington’s failure to produce a single goal or assist over the entirety of the previous campaign suggests he’s at risk from the new arrival, with Hughes desperate to add more directness to his attacking options as he attempts to introduce a slicker, more possession-based approach to the Potters’ play. Assaidi’s stats across his last couple of full seasons in Holland certainly highlight his capabilities and, if given a run of regular games, may be one to consider. Already handed a 45-minute debut in last night’s Capital One Cup win over Walsall, his performance was hailed by Hughes, who has already tipped him to be a crowd favourite.

Coming in at just 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.2 in the Sky Sports game, Assaidi could potentially hand Fantasy managers a real budget option for their five-man midfields over the season ahead. At present, though, with more secure options such as Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham or Hull’s Robbie Brady in the same price bracket, we’ll be happy to keep our distance until Hughes’ intentions for the new boy become apparent. An upcoming run of matches which see the Potters play West Ham and Arsenal away and welcome City to the Britannia will certainly deter any initial suitors, affording us time to assess Assaidi’s impact before contemplating any possible transfer in.

      A.

Better strength throughout the team, and gives you more flexibility, especially in defence.

I can't justify RVPs price at the moment, until perhaps my team value has gone up to accommodate him.

He can play on both wings. Was excellent for us in pre-season, weird to think he has just been frozen out like this. Rate him higher than Schürrle, at least at the moment.

Coutinho, Suarez & Aspas/Moses (if he comes)

i usually wildcard around this time of year but if team value is your only aim its not worth it, especially this year. If you're happy with your team there's no point WCing; if you're not, then its a good time to set yourself up for the long term.

This, plus the higher NTI target means even a bandwagon takes longer time to earn 0.2 / 0.1 cash

I was planning to WC for the TV, now I'm not so sure it's worth it

It's not so easy now....GW1 used to be a good time to get double digit risers as transfers are easy to predict (Play you WC straight away for the players rising and watch them do a double digit rise then change your team on SAT morning and you keep all the o.1's)...same for the GW3 transfer freenzy...I played my WC in GW1 as i always planned but didn't know the upper limit had been raised for increases so didn't get the added bunce i expected.

Depends on how many double risers there are. Different thresholds make it less profitable.
I've read that it's a bit of a myth that more transfer activity in the break, rather they're just more spread out.

That's correct...GW1 transfers are easy to predict...by GW3 there are a lot more players in the transfer game so harder to predict double digit risers.

It's not a myth, but the value of it is still in question. There are much more transfers during the international break because that is traditionally when the largest number of wildcards are played - which is, of course, partly fuelled by the 'myth'. More wildcards means more transfers, means more price rises, means more people feel the need to Wildcard etc.

I remember wildcarding in an international break and I hardly made any profit. Despite there being two weeks, there weren't many double risers at all as transfer activity was slow. I think it can only be less profitable this season with a higher NTI threshold for price rises.

imho....it is a load crap. The object of the game is to score points not raise team value. If your sole purpose to WC is to raise cash, it is a waste. However if your team seriously needs it and cannot be fixed with 2 hits spread over 2 weeks then it might be a good shout.

I believe that a better time to use it is THE WEEK AFTER the international break! Injuries known/Transfer window closed.

The optimal time to use it is for ATTACKING a DGW.

        I don't necessarily agree. 2 reasons:

The transfer window is closed an the international injuries are known before the end of the international break GW - so any new players can be entered free of charge, likewise injured players can be removed - so no great advantage in delaying a week if, as you say, your team needs a change.

And there's no optimum time to play you WC - the DGW weeks / international breaks are two times when it's good to play it - but whether it's optimal or not varies from team to team. I did it for a DGW last year and I would have scored more if I did it in an international break - but I'm not naive enough to think that will always be the case for me.

Either way it seems to make sense. Chester surely destined for 1 or 0 points if any of your other players don't play plus the likelihood of others only getting 1 point so getting in Silva (if you're happy with that) is barely a risk assuming he gets 3 points with a big upside.

As long as you won't want to go back to Hazard straight away.

How much money do you think I will be able to make during the international break from playing the market?

      AM wondering the same.

With the NTI target set almost double this year there's less time to make a quick 0.2, ship the chump out and get another bandwagoner in for a 0.2 rise.

      I reckon 1.5m absolute max over the GW3 - GW4 period

Right, a few players that I really do need to ship out. Already done my FT to do Haz>Silva. £0.3m.

    Migs Boruc

Coleman Gibbs M Turner Rat Chester

    Wally Silva Miralles Sess Kim

    Soldado Tekkers Sturridge

Rat is obviously nit playing and probably will not this Saturday. Sess has been off form and may not play this weekend. Take an hit for Sess>Nolan?

I'd be tempted to play Rat, hope he starts, if not, Sess comes off the bench...

Would mean that you need Nolan to get at least a goal just to make up the -4 hit. Confident that he will and maybe more if you want to actully gain points for the move?

It only tells half a story...The real trick is to get all those 0.1's lumped together to make a meanigful transfer....101.1 spread out over eleven players is not as useful as 0.3 for three players..For example...Zabaleta > Kompany is achievable if you 4.5 fifth mid is worth 4.8...and you are prepared to go back to 4.5 for that spot.
