Moving Target

Moving Target – Oussama Assaidi

Stoke boss Mark Hughes added to his options on the flank earlier this week by snapping up Oussama Assaidi from Liverpool on a season-long loan deal. The 25-year-old becomes the third summer arrival since Hughes’ installation at the Britannia, following the acquisition of defenders Erik Pieters and Marc Muniesa – in an interview with the Potters official website, the Moroccan revealed he was much in demand before opting to join up with the Staffordshire outfit:

“I had a number of options available to me but I really feel that this is the best one for me. I am excited about what the season holds for us. I spoke to the manager here, he told me his hopes for the season and how he sees me fitting into the team and he made it a very attractive move for me to be honest. He plays football the right way, the way that I want to play, and it was quite an easy decision for me to make in the end. I came to the game on Saturday and watched the match and I was impressed. I feel I can fit in here well and help the team to progress.”

The History

A product of the AZ Alkmaar youth academy, Assaidi’s career began in the Dutch second-tier with Omniworld back in 2006. Over the course of a couple of seasons, he registered three goals from 36 appearances before making his way to De Graafschap ahead of the 2008/09 season. Assaidi’s first year at the club produced just a couple of goals from 16 appearances but after netting five times in as many games at the start of the following campaign, he was purchased by Heerenveen prior to the closer of the summer transfer window.

The Moroccan took time to settle in his new surrounds, with just one goal and three assists from 20 league games but stepped up significantly the year after. Assaidi racked up nine goals and 13 assists from 31 top-flight matches and followed that up with 10 goals and seven assists over 27 games in 2011/12. Having played a single match for the Dutch club at the start of last season, he was snapped up by Liverpool for a fee of around £2.4m but failed to impress new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers – all four of his league appearances arrived courtesy of the subs bench.

The Prospects

After falling firmly behind the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling for a role on Liverpool’s left, the move to the Britannia certainly looks in the Moroccan’s best interests. Granted, Stoke have no shortage of wide men to provide competition – Matthew Etherington has started both league games thus far, while Michael Kightly and fit-again Brek Shea are also in the mix.

Crucially, though, Assaidi’s speed on the flank may help edge him ahead in Hughes’ thinking as the new man in charge looks to inject a little more urgency to his side’s play out wide. Upon completion of the deal, the Potters boss explained:

“He’s an exciting player, who has great pace and is very direct and will certainly add another dimension to what we already have at the Club.”

Certainly, Etherington’s failure to produce a single goal or assist over the entirety of the previous campaign suggests he’s at risk from the new arrival, with Hughes desperate to add more directness to his attacking options as he attempts to introduce a slicker, more possession-based approach to the Potters’ play. Assaidi’s stats across his last couple of full seasons in Holland certainly highlight his capabilities and, if given a run of regular games, may be one to consider. Already handed a 45-minute debut in last night’s Capital One Cup win over Walsall, his performance was hailed by Hughes, who has already tipped him to be a crowd favourite.

Coming in at just 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.2 in the Sky Sports game, Assaidi could potentially hand Fantasy managers a real budget option for their five-man midfields over the season ahead. At present, though, with more secure options such as Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham or Hull’s Robbie Brady in the same price bracket, we’ll be happy to keep our distance until Hughes’ intentions for the new boy become apparent. An upcoming run of matches which see the Potters play West Ham and Arsenal away and welcome City to the Britannia will certainly deter any initial suitors, affording us time to assess Assaidi’s impact before contemplating any possible transfer in.

People are expecting Dzeko and Negredo to play together; I recall at Malago if Pellegrini went for 4-2-2-2 he did preferred the pairing of a more traditional, static finisher-style center forward with a more mobile, trickier one - such as Roque Santa Cruz with Saviola. Dzeko and Negredo seem to be cut from the same cloth a little bit too much for both to start against Hull.

What did Dzeko do to lose his starting Striker position? The reason he got subbed out last week was a cut on his chin that needed a couple stitches. He'll be back starting this wkd and will put up a brace for City. Mark it down.

    THIS WEEKS CAPTAIN OPTIONS

Arsenal v Spurs - 13 of last 14 games between the 2 has seen more than 2.5 goals scored. This fixture has seen two 5-2 victories for Arsenal in the last 2 seasons.

Walcott - 1 Goal and 1 Assist in last seasons 5-2 (Cazorla did the same), 2 goals in the previous seasons 5-2.

Giroud - Scored 8 in pre-season, and 3 in Arsenal's first 4 games of the season. 11 of Giroud's 13 Premier League goals have came at home, including 1 goal in this fixture last season.

Soldado - May also be an option but it is in question whether or not he is going to score a lot of goals, mainly down to lack of service, risky option.

I would leave any Tottenham defenders out if possible, but maybe keep an Arsenal one in as an Arsenal defender has got on the scoresheet in this fixture twice in a row (Sagna 2 seasons ago, Mertesacker last season) but don't hope for a clean sheet from either side.

Liverpool v Man U - There hasn't been a clean sheet in any Premier league game between the 2 since 25th October 2009, where Liverpool won 2-0. The last 3 Premier league meetings have ended 2-1, with Man U winning all 3.

RVP - Has scored 4 times in his last 3 games against Liverpool, 2 in 1 for Arsenal and 2 in 2 for Man U. As one of my previous posts suggested, RVP relishes the big away games and the blank against Chelsea at home on Monday strengthened this argument.

Sturridge - Scored 10 goals in his last 8 games for Liverpool (All Competitions). Scored against Man U, Man City and Chelsea last season since joining in January.

Gerrard - 4 goals in last 6 appearances against United, with a goal in each of the last 2 at Anfield. IMO not the best option for this week, but for anyone who really wants to have a punt at Gerrard it may not be the worst decision you have ever made.

Coutinho - Hasn't had a great start to the FPL season and has still not proven himself against any of the Premier Leagues top teams.

Man City v Hull - The Blues have scored in each of their last 51 home games, and Hull have only won 7 of a possible 75 in their previous Premier League away games.

Silva / Dzeko / Aguero - City are going to score goals this season, and with a team such as Hull visiting the Etihad, there will be FPL points to be had. Pellegrini has started the same attacking players twice in a row, will he do it for the third time? Rotation could be an issue in this game as it may be a game where he knows he can rotate whilst most probably still picking up the points.

Zabaleta / Lescott / Clichy - In their last 10 home Premier League games, City have kept 7 clean sheets, which may prompt a majority of FPL players to take the safe option of captaining a Blues defender.

Any more Captain suggestions will be welcomed and I could comment with my thoughts

Nice post. But it's a dilemma for me: Silva, Zabaleta, or Soldado?

Think I'd go Soldado if Spurs were at home. But don't want to risk Silva if he might only get 15 mins game time.

I'm also thinking that maybe Nolan vs. Stoke could be worth a punt?

Defo not Soldado, Arsenal are going to press the ball and stop the service to him, and if he doesn't get service he is useless. Just like what I said, if you want a safe option go with a City defender, in your case Zabaleta.

48, the series splits into pairs of two, with the first term being half that of the second.

      1,2 = 1 and 1 x 2
      5, 10 = 5 and 5 x 2
      13, 26 = 13 and 13 x 2
      29, 48 = 29 and 29 x 2 should give 58, not 48

I assume it expects you to make an error in mental arithmetic on the last pair, and be baffled as to which number should be missing.

Matt Jarvis is a good pick this week certainly better option than the right flank i.e Downing

Stoke have conceded 20 crosses from the left flank which is almost double the amount conceded on the right (11).

Jarvis has attempted 13 crosses over the last two game weeks 3 of which have been successful and grabbing an assist in there last home game against Cardiff.

He's my under the radar pick this week.

Anyone else looking at Chadli? Even though he's still settling into a spurs side that aren't gelling yet he's been putting in plenty of shots and key passes. Good sign. Contemplating getting in early seeing as I'm on my wildcard. I'd bench him this week if I do. Otherwise it's boring old Nolan.

they are bringing in a lot of new mids by the looks of it, I wonder which one of the current playing ones will be nailed on anymore if both Lamela and Eriksen arrive

Indeed. My guess is they'll use a 4-3-3 a lot of the time with Lamela on the right and Eriksen in the middle.

That would put Chadli in the picture for sure as he seems to be preferred on the left with AVB likeing his mids to be cutting inside a bit. But Lennon and Townsend as well as Siggy will take some minutes away. And I cant see Lamela and Eriksen resting too much. Dembele will probably be out of that mix and sit a bit deeper

Whittaker won't play once Bassong is back, so choose another 4.0 option.

I would get a City def instead of Walker. Tottenham started with 2 CS, but City is proven to be more resistant at the back.

Barkley could be out once Gibson is back.
I'm not sure about Rosicky either..

There will be multiple answers 😉

if XYZ are three consecutive digits, Y is the number you are after and one of X or Z is a square while the other is a cube.

Seeing as mmraguerolicious cracked it, you just needed to find players whose values totalled up to 26.0 Interestingly it is the only such cube-square sandwiched number.

Who should I give my (C) to this week?

    A) Soldado
    B) Silva
    C) Nolan
    D) Zabaleta

    Questions:

Will Silva start? - Not sure what Pellegrini's response to the disaster last week will be. Wholesale changes? Or will he keep faith with his 'strongest' XI where he might have taken the foot off the gas if they'd been carrying 6 points from a win at Cardiff?

Will Spurs v. Arse be a cagey 0-0? Probably...

Do I trust the City defence and/or Zabaleta to get an assist/goal?

Or is Nolan the safest bet?!

Aye, most straightforward option. I'm nervous of 2nd guessing Man City's team selection on a (C) choice, though, and Soldado, who hasn't been glittering as of yet, against Arsenal is likely to be quiet.

I'm feeling Nolan could be a good gamble...
