Moving Target

Moving Target – Oussama Assaidi

Stoke boss Mark Hughes added to his options on the flank earlier this week by snapping up Oussama Assaidi from Liverpool on a season-long loan deal. The 25-year-old becomes the third summer arrival since Hughes’ installation at the Britannia, following the acquisition of defenders Erik Pieters and Marc Muniesa – in an interview with the Potters official website, the Moroccan revealed he was much in demand before opting to join up with the Staffordshire outfit:

“I had a number of options available to me but I really feel that this is the best one for me. I am excited about what the season holds for us. I spoke to the manager here, he told me his hopes for the season and how he sees me fitting into the team and he made it a very attractive move for me to be honest. He plays football the right way, the way that I want to play, and it was quite an easy decision for me to make in the end. I came to the game on Saturday and watched the match and I was impressed. I feel I can fit in here well and help the team to progress.”

The History

A product of the AZ Alkmaar youth academy, Assaidi’s career began in the Dutch second-tier with Omniworld back in 2006. Over the course of a couple of seasons, he registered three goals from 36 appearances before making his way to De Graafschap ahead of the 2008/09 season. Assaidi’s first year at the club produced just a couple of goals from 16 appearances but after netting five times in as many games at the start of the following campaign, he was purchased by Heerenveen prior to the closer of the summer transfer window.

The Moroccan took time to settle in his new surrounds, with just one goal and three assists from 20 league games but stepped up significantly the year after. Assaidi racked up nine goals and 13 assists from 31 top-flight matches and followed that up with 10 goals and seven assists over 27 games in 2011/12. Having played a single match for the Dutch club at the start of last season, he was snapped up by Liverpool for a fee of around £2.4m but failed to impress new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers – all four of his league appearances arrived courtesy of the subs bench.

The Prospects

After falling firmly behind the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling for a role on Liverpool’s left, the move to the Britannia certainly looks in the Moroccan’s best interests. Granted, Stoke have no shortage of wide men to provide competition – Matthew Etherington has started both league games thus far, while Michael Kightly and fit-again Brek Shea are also in the mix.

Crucially, though, Assaidi’s speed on the flank may help edge him ahead in Hughes’ thinking as the new man in charge looks to inject a little more urgency to his side’s play out wide. Upon completion of the deal, the Potters boss explained:

“He’s an exciting player, who has great pace and is very direct and will certainly add another dimension to what we already have at the Club.”

Certainly, Etherington’s failure to produce a single goal or assist over the entirety of the previous campaign suggests he’s at risk from the new arrival, with Hughes desperate to add more directness to his attacking options as he attempts to introduce a slicker, more possession-based approach to the Potters’ play. Assaidi’s stats across his last couple of full seasons in Holland certainly highlight his capabilities and, if given a run of regular games, may be one to consider. Already handed a 45-minute debut in last night’s Capital One Cup win over Walsall, his performance was hailed by Hughes, who has already tipped him to be a crowd favourite.

Coming in at just 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.2 in the Sky Sports game, Assaidi could potentially hand Fantasy managers a real budget option for their five-man midfields over the season ahead. At present, though, with more secure options such as Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham or Hull’s Robbie Brady in the same price bracket, we’ll be happy to keep our distance until Hughes’ intentions for the new boy become apparent. An upcoming run of matches which see the Potters play West Ham and Arsenal away and welcome City to the Britannia will certainly deter any initial suitors, affording us time to assess Assaidi’s impact before contemplating any possible transfer in.

Any thoughts on who to play from Mignolet or Marshall? On the one hand, Mignolet is almost certain to not keep a clean sheet, as United not scoring two matches in a row is unlikely. This coupled with the fact the Cardiff look strong at home. On the other hand, Mignolet could make a load of saves, and Cardiff are yet to keep a clean sheet. Decisions...

Bit of gambler's fallacy going on there. The number of goals united scored in their previous game is completely unconnected to the number of goals they will score in this game.

I'm banking on Mignolet for save points though 🙂

United could get a penalty and Mignolet could save it. Van Persie has missed penalties before. Messi missed one last night. Not inconceivable ! Your dilemna is why I don't own two playing keepers, to prevent decisions like this backfiring on me...I own Boruc and was 85% certain Southampton would get a clean sheet at home to Sunderland...that didn't happen.

Ive had a bad start to the season, but might save this week's transfer. Just don't see anyone worth it atm. Planning on a Cech>Migs move and maybe a Lukaku or Anelka upgrade next week, thought I still want to give them a chance.

    Lambert Is A Goal Machine
    • 12 Years

Hey everybody, I'm attempting to crack the Saints midfield dilemma here for those that are interested in alternatives to Lambert and co.

I am a devoted Saints fan and watching the Carling cup midweek was very interesting in terms of sussing out the manager's thinking. It appeared to me the manager had laid down the gauntlet to S Davis, Ramirez and Rodriguez against Barnsley as he considered his options.

The midfield thus far this season has seen Schneiderlin and Wanyama playing in front of the back four with Lallana And James Ward-Prowse operating out wide (J Rod and Lambert up top).

The best way to perhaps tackle the issue is breaking down the merits and drawbacks of the players I think could be in with a fantasy shout before giving my opinion..

    Adam Lallana: (Price 6.0)

Rested midweek against Barnsley, team captain and fans' favourite. It seems clear to me that Lallana is clearly one of the first names on the teamsheet and Pochettino has no intentions of dropping him.
Lallana is a classy wide midfielder who can also operate in an advanced attacking midfield role, both footed and often switches wings during games. I expect him to have a solid season - probably anything between 5 and 8 goals and up to 10 assists.

    Positives:

Very attacking, not afraid to take men on
Fancies himself from any range with either foot
Will score and assist throughout the season

    Drawbacks:

    Injury prone
Very unselfish in front of goal - can be guilty of overplaying it
Often withdrawn before the 90 minutes down to tactical decisions

    Chance of starting: 95%

    Value for money: 6/10

    Gaston Ramirez (Price 5.9)

Had a long summer away at the Confed Cup and with a friendly just before the opener against West Brom he found himself on the bench for the first two gameweeks. With no real pre-season however I expect this to be a temporary situation, and we should see far more starts for Ramirez very soon.

Similar to Lallana, he can be played anywhere across the front, out wide, in the hole or even as a winger. He has more pace than his counterpart however and the lad absolutely oozes quality on the ball, certainly the most skilled player I've seen pull a Saints shirt on. I expect Ramirez to have a very strong season this season despite the early season set backs: anything between 7 and 10 goals and up to 10 assists.

    Positives

Confident in possession and a real playmaker at the heart of everything.
Not afraid to shoot from any range and has an absolute pearl of a left foot.
Clinical finisher, deadly 1 on 1.
    Skills that pay the bills.

    Drawbacks

Defensively weaker than Lallana in previous season which appears to be the reason behind his struggle to really cement a first team place (definitely appears to have shown progress on this front however)
Previous tendency to be withdrawn early (similar to Lallana)
    Currently is not nailed on

    Chance of starting: 75%

    Value for money: 8/10

    Victor Wanyama (Price 5.0)

Came late to pre-season but still had enough time to cement his place in the first team and put in some impressive performances. Has been a rock so far this season and his reading of the game and ability to break up attacks has been second to none.
Victor lacks the vision and passing range that Schneiderlin perhaps possesses and certainly can be seen as the more defensive of the two midfielders in front of the defence. I expect relatively few goals and assists this season from this man.

    Positives:

Will get 90 minutes every game
Southampton's fluid midfield does allow him to get forward
Disciplined and unlikely to receive bookings etc
Cheapest of the midfield options that will start

    Drawbacks:

Hasn't shown enough going forward in my eyes to merit a place
Schneiderlin offers more going forward and seems to be the one given freedom to make the runs

    Chance of starting: 100%

    Value for money: 4/10

    Morgan Schneiderlin (Price 5.5)

Morgan has finally added goals to his game having previously scored only 1 goal in his entire career at Southampton. Schneiderlin is slightly less nailed on than Wanyama but has the bonus of being the more attacking of the two. He is not one to get injured or rotated.
So far this season he has shown promise of goals to come but I do not expect any more than 5 goals this term with a few assists thrown in. Also concerned that he was subbed at half time to allow Osvaldo to play against Sunderland, suggesting he could be one of the first to go to accommodate Osvaldo and Lambert.

    Positives:
    Attacking for a holding midfielder
    Has goals in his locker
90 minute man (until the weekend!)

    Drawbacks:
    0.5 more than Wanyama
    Overpriced for what he offers
Seemingly open to sacrifice in tight games

    Chance of starting: 80%

    Value for money: 4/10

    James Ward-Prowse (Price 4.5)

JWP has blossomed over the last year or so and really come in to his own. He has incredible set piece ability and when starting takes free kicks from non lethal positions as well as corners. He is also not afraid to shoot and is a great crosser of the ball.
However, despite this I do not expect him to maintain his starting berth due to his age and Pochettino's comments earlier this season concerning his youth selections that suggest they will play bit part roles this season. I tout Ramirez to be his replacement this weekend against Norwich.

    Positives:

Set pieces will bring a lot of assists with the likes of Lambert on the other end of them
    Very cheap
Very good shot on him (see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxqWvsG3ANA )
Could be used as a sub and wouldn't be surprised to see him earn points from the bench

    Drawbacks:

Unlikely to maintain first team place
Usually subbed even when he does start

    Chance of starting: 40%

    Value for money: 5/10

I won't bother with Steven Davis or Jack Cork as I don't think these are players that were ever on anybody's radar, however I will take one last look at Jay Rodriguez for those of you still reading this wall of text (apologies about that!).

    Jay Rodriguez (Price 6.0)

Had a good pre-season getting on the score sheet a fair bit (although mostly unimpressive goals) and so far has been extremely unlucky not to get on the scoresheet this season. I have in my team currently and until the arrival of Osvaldo would have had him down as a guarenteed starter.
Jay is more attacking than any of the above mentioned players (as you would expect given the fact he is a striker on fantasy prem) and possesses great pace and footwork. His finishing can be lacking and he has been guilty until now of not being clinical enough - I put this down to his age and stage of development.
I will be careful not to make too much of a prediction in terms of goals and assists this season due to the fact that I am not sure where he will fit in this season once Osvaldo is bedded in to the team. What I will say is if he can maintain a starting place, I expect goals and assists a plenty.

    Positives:

Will score and assist when on the field, one of the furthest forward players and his pace causes teams a lot of problems
Cheaper than Lambert for those on a budget
Manager seems to quite like Jay so may be reluctant to drop
    Usually lasts the entire 90

    Drawbacks:

Could easily be dropped this weekend (can't see where he will fit in unless Lambert is dropped - BLASPHEMY! I hear you shout)
    Finishing needs to improve

    Chance of starting: 50%

Value for money: 6/10 (until he is dropped!)

Hopefully that has helped anybody thinking about their options re: Southampton going forward. Apologies for the length of post and please feel free to post any feedback or criticisms below!

Well if you would like my thoughts on Lambert I'm happy to oblige, but unfortunately I can't really cover Osvaldo as my knowledge of the player is fairly limited.

        Rickie Lambert:

Saint's legend and newly promoted to the England squad. Having a dream of a season so far and was extremely unlucky not to have beaten Westwood at the weekend against Norwich. Although my opinion is clearly and unashamedly biased, Lambert knows where the goal is and will score at least 12 goals this season with many assists along the way - I can see him scratching around the 20 goal mark personally. He is unplayable in the air and is often used at the far post to play in team mates with his arial ability as well as his trademark powerful headers. Also on penalties of which he has a record of 29/29 for Saints, and is lethal from free kicks. Powerful shot from open play and really is a late bloomer!

        Positives:

Guarenteed to score goals, teams still haven't been able to suss him out
On pens and free kicks from lethal positions - deadly too
With the introduction of Osvaldo he could form an even more deadly partnership

        Drawbacks:
May share the spoils a bit more now with Osvaldo in the team meaning more assists potentially and a drop in goals
Could also see less game time given his age and competition for places
        Quite pricey

        Value for money: 6/10

I've gone for Lambert.. as whoever plays in midfield he'll be at the end of it. But if I didn't I'd probably pick Lallana...steady eddy players like him are exactly what a dullard like me is after.

Ha fair point, my only concern if I was a Lambert owner would be Osvaldo also being on the other end now, although admittedly I feel Lambert will still play further up the field and Osvaldo will just increase the service to Lambert and hence the number of chances for him to gobble up.

I used Lallana for a spell last season and he worked out well. Wanyama is tempting and, honestly at 5.0 is pretty nice. There just aren't a lot of other 5.0s out there who are near 100% nailed-on.

Lallana would be my safest bet, but I'd go for Ramirez personally, I'm going to wait until this weekend to make my decision and see what happens with the starting line up. Until he is nailed on though he may be a risky choice. Wanyama I wouldn't recommend, he isn't going to score much and there is much better value for 5.0million out there.
