The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

The Premier League’s bizarre shortage of goals continues as Sunday’s headline acts muster just two strikes between them. It saw both Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge maintain their goal-a-game records, whilst at the Hawthorns, Swansea struck twice, leaving the Baggies without a goal in their three league outings.

The Game Changer

Giroud’s moment of quality proved the difference in a disjointed North London derby. A sublime flicked finish from a smart Theo Walcott centre was the Frenchman’s third goal in as many league games as he goes on establishing his top-flight reputation.

While we’re anticipating arrivals at the Emirates before the window slams shut, it’s fair to say that if a world class striker fails to saunter through the Emirates door, then Fantasy interest in the impressive Giroud will accelerate.

Currently priced at just 8.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Giroud is owned by over 13% of managers following an outstanding pre-season that saw him strike eight goals. He has taken that form into the season and is not only accepting his goalscoring opportunities with confidence, his all-round play as Arsenal’s centre-forward has undoubtedly improved. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to discourage the lesser-spotted Emirates chequebook from fluttering in the direction of the Arsenal attack.

The Underused

The fixture computer did few favours for Swansea’s Fantasy prospects over the opening two matches. A home clash with the champions and an away trip to Spurs returned just a single goal but, today at the Hawthorns, we saw Michael Laudrup’s side kick-start their season and remind us of the talent they have within the ranks.

Ben Davies was a member of our team of the season last term after a full campaign at left-back generated eight clean sheets, a goal and two assists for the initial value of just 4.0. Priced at 5.0 this time round, he’s been largely ignored but will end the Gameweek as the top scoring defender having cracked the opening goal in the 2-0 win over West Brom. Team-mate Pablo Hernandez failed to make the anticipated impact in his first season but promises improvement this time around. Goal and assist returns today will earn him a couple of bonus and see him rank as the top midfielder in the Gameweek; at just 6.0, the classy Spaniard – who has now played a part in all three of his side’s strikes this term – could yet be a prospect for those who cannot stretch funds to cover Michu.

With Liverpool and Arsenal at home in the next three, the tests keep coming for Laudrup’s men but today’s result reminded Fantasy mangers that we’ll need to monitor progress at the Liberty and be ready to pay attention once the schedule eases from Gameweek 8.

The Selection Poser

Kolo Toure’s absence from the Liverpool lineup through a groin injury was perhaps expected, although noises from Anfield prior to the match gave his Fantasy owners some hope that he’d be available. It wasn’t to be.

With the injury played down by Brendan Rodgers, Toure could easily be in contention following the international break. However, it appears he may be about to slip down the pecking order by then. According to reports and Rodgers himself, Liverpool have agreed fees for defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori. The signing of Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain, looks particularly daunting for Toure owners. The 23-year-old is a French international and is said to have commanded a fee of somewhere in the region of £18 million. It seems unlikely that Liverpool have paid that kind of money to have him play second fiddle to Toure. Sakho can be deployed at left-back but with Aly Cissokho recently joining the club as back-up to Jose Enrique, long-term, it looks as though Toure’s position is under real threat. The former City man is currently owned by over 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Disaster of a GW - 36 points (half of which came from my uber-cheap back 4!) and now ranked around 1.2m.

Since I didn't go massive on the DGW, I thought this might be the week I gained back the advantage. Instead I lost 400k places and have been forced into doing my 2FT already because of price rises.

What a way to start the international break! FPL. Bloody hell.

Morning Dz, what a miserable gameweek capped of by hernandez points as i choose tarabt over him after thinking about it for 2 days 🙁

    Boruc (foster)
    ivan coleman chester (murner ward)
    wally coutinho tarabt miralas (kim)
    soldado lambert dzeko

    A: miralas + dzeko >> hernandez + Rvp (-4)
B: Use WC...mainly to sort out mids, will be happy with my strikers in soldado lambert rvp if i dont WC

I know...leaning towards just taking a 8 point hit as opposed to a WC.

Players i need to take out: foster, dzeko, miralas
Players i want to take out: coutinho, kim, tarabt

My other reason for doing the WC was to increase the TV by 1m which i think i can. is that the right motivation though? Used it early last year but the WC would have come in handy towards all those dgw's at the end of season

United need an entirely new midfield, from left wing to right (minus Carrick).

Best illustration of this is backed up by FPL. Who is looking at United midfield "coverage".
Nobody? Have a look at last years FPL scores and take a look at this years bleak outlook it highlights 3 things -

    (1) There is no standout regular (bar Carrick). Nobody I would bet on being in the team every week, no star. You'd bank on Hazard or Carzola, or Michu, or Bale (previously), or Gerrard or Silva starting every week elsewhere.
    (2) You wouldn't bank on any of them getting over 10 assists per season.
    (3) You wouldn't bank on any of them scoring 15+ goals a season (or even over 10)

Strong rumours Kagawa is going to PSG 🙁

I agree that there is no star quality at the moment. I would take Fellaini but only if he is seen as a "destroyer" and another midfielder with that something special is brought in. I can see Moyes sticking to what he knows and just reverting to Baines and Fellaini though which will be disappointing.

Finally got rid of Snoddy.. What a bad transfer that was(Rumor is Pilkington will get his chance over snoddy next week). Brady in to complete my uber cheap Brady/Kim somewhat rotation. Now all that is left is swapping Mirallas, Toure, Cech out for Michu, Vidic/Terry/Kompany, Mcgregor :sigh: Gonna be weeks b4 this mess is repaired

Norwich city forums and people on here admittedly. hence why it's a rumor. Not totally convinced but imo couple that with the fixtures they have and the price drops this week and getting rid seems a good option(not trying to validate my transfer or anythin 🙂 )

For sure getting rid might be a good option. Against tougher sides Snoddy comes into his own though. Norwich will be relying on set pieces to score against Spurs.

I would try to squeeze Migs for Boruc and maybe Merte/Kos for Enrique, but I actually do like it in theory. 5 strong defenders with Brady/Hernandez cycling in when they have tough fixtures looks pretty tasty. The downside is if several (As in, more than two) heavy hitting midfielders of Hazard/Lamela/Silva/Coutinho you'll have a hard time fitting them in.

If I was WCing I would do something like this...

    Mignolet (4m)
    Zabaleta Vidic* Coleman Ward Chester
    Walcott Lampard Hernandez* Gunnarsson* Brady*
    RVP* Sturridge Benteke

*denotes players I don't already have...

Kinda weak midfield, but that's a calculated risk with RVP in there, and more funds in the backline with Vidic...

Don't think that's better than my current team though, so I won't bother...
