The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

The Premier League’s bizarre shortage of goals continues as Sunday’s headline acts muster just two strikes between them. It saw both Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge maintain their goal-a-game records, whilst at the Hawthorns, Swansea struck twice, leaving the Baggies without a goal in their three league outings.

The Game Changer

Giroud’s moment of quality proved the difference in a disjointed North London derby. A sublime flicked finish from a smart Theo Walcott centre was the Frenchman’s third goal in as many league games as he goes on establishing his top-flight reputation.

While we’re anticipating arrivals at the Emirates before the window slams shut, it’s fair to say that if a world class striker fails to saunter through the Emirates door, then Fantasy interest in the impressive Giroud will accelerate.

Currently priced at just 8.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Giroud is owned by over 13% of managers following an outstanding pre-season that saw him strike eight goals. He has taken that form into the season and is not only accepting his goalscoring opportunities with confidence, his all-round play as Arsenal’s centre-forward has undoubtedly improved. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to discourage the lesser-spotted Emirates chequebook from fluttering in the direction of the Arsenal attack.

The Underused

The fixture computer did few favours for Swansea’s Fantasy prospects over the opening two matches. A home clash with the champions and an away trip to Spurs returned just a single goal but, today at the Hawthorns, we saw Michael Laudrup’s side kick-start their season and remind us of the talent they have within the ranks.

Ben Davies was a member of our team of the season last term after a full campaign at left-back generated eight clean sheets, a goal and two assists for the initial value of just 4.0. Priced at 5.0 this time round, he’s been largely ignored but will end the Gameweek as the top scoring defender having cracked the opening goal in the 2-0 win over West Brom. Team-mate Pablo Hernandez failed to make the anticipated impact in his first season but promises improvement this time around. Goal and assist returns today will earn him a couple of bonus and see him rank as the top midfielder in the Gameweek; at just 6.0, the classy Spaniard – who has now played a part in all three of his side’s strikes this term – could yet be a prospect for those who cannot stretch funds to cover Michu.

With Liverpool and Arsenal at home in the next three, the tests keep coming for Laudrup’s men but today’s result reminded Fantasy mangers that we’ll need to monitor progress at the Liberty and be ready to pay attention once the schedule eases from Gameweek 8.

The Selection Poser

Kolo Toure’s absence from the Liverpool lineup through a groin injury was perhaps expected, although noises from Anfield prior to the match gave his Fantasy owners some hope that he’d be available. It wasn’t to be.

With the injury played down by Brendan Rodgers, Toure could easily be in contention following the international break. However, it appears he may be about to slip down the pecking order by then. According to reports and Rodgers himself, Liverpool have agreed fees for defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori. The signing of Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain, looks particularly daunting for Toure owners. The 23-year-old is a French international and is said to have commanded a fee of somewhere in the region of £18 million. It seems unlikely that Liverpool have paid that kind of money to have him play second fiddle to Toure. Sakho can be deployed at left-back but with Aly Cissokho recently joining the club as back-up to Jose Enrique, long-term, it looks as though Toure’s position is under real threat. The former City man is currently owned by over 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Mirallas to Pablo or wait further? I like Pablo a lot and could be the Swans' man hitting some heights this season. Downgrading a £7.5m to a £6.0m seems worth it and will allow me to upgrade Dzeko. Whether Dzeko requires a transfer out will wait after the international break ended.

Sound transfer but he does not have the fixtures. At that awkward price where he's too expensive as a 5th mid and wont be consistent enough as a 4th mid. Will be rotated with Dyer, Routledge and Pozuelo when europa games continue. Had 1 shot on goal and 1 key pass so could have been one of those lucky days. All in all.. an ok punt but could backfire. Michu is the still the man 🙂

depends on the formation you want to play right. 4-3-3, with Pablo as 4th mid is a good move and gives you the funds to have 4 top defenders and 3 solid strikers.

I personally consider him as cheap £5.5m to £7.5m midfielder with his track record. Not really a 5th cheap budget midfielder. Once the good fixtures set in, I really fancy him big things up, not as explosive as Michu's debut season but more of a mid-priced-range consistent performer.

With poor supply I don't see RVP winning the golden boot at all this year.

Sturridge, Giroud and Negredo could all score more quite comfortably.......

I am a huge RVP fan but remain flabbergasted at the amount of wildcards being played so early to get him even though the other top strikers are two thirds of the price!

Someone explain what I am missing? His fixtures are of course strong but so are Arsenal and Liverpools

I have him so obviously a biased opinion here, but it was always about GWs 4-9 for me. With those fixtures and the huge ownership, with a high percentage of owners captaining him, it's a very ballsy risk to go without. And even if he doesn't score so well there's a lot of people in the same boat, and no guarantees the others will. For me, I'm scared to go without.

I like the fact TommyTour has gone off to a very good start and then wildcard to maintain his top position.

        What rank does he have?
I did that in my best season. Sometimes the fixtures force you to change it up big time also.

No plans to WC. Inside top 50K but unhappy with team. Think I will take a hit this GW & hope for the best.

That makes me feel worse, but glad you're doing well. The RVP conundrum has been plaguing me and I can't afford to continue to lose ground in my money league.

All the best with your hit

Baines OOP on wing @ Utd is perfect (c) material. Could even go without RVP, I reckon

    Baines (c)
    Benteke - Giroud - Sturridge

    Who cares about the rest.

I don't want to sell coutinho, but:

    Dzeko->RVP
    Coutinho -> ward prowse

    is very tempting

Just seems crazy not to have rvp captain in gw4 and a few others.

My subs didnt work, still got a mighty 1 point to come in for Clyne 😀

Green arrows so far this season, top 100k for now, not too bad considering I thought I didn't have a great team since GW1

Not sure I'd be looking to jump on a Chelsea midfielder with those fixtures and our defensive outlook, but if I had to pick I think I'd go Lamps. 4 x 90 minutes, has great threat and penalties in his locker.

Morning Dog, pretty meh week for me (44 points), and now have the difficult task of choosing between Giroud, Benteke and RVP as my transfer in this week (the latter requiring a 4 pointer). You?

I was thinking in general, not necessarily FPL related. Yeah this week was pretty low average with no RPV points. Not looking forward to next GW as a non-RVPer...

FPL is going good, and long-weekend in Dublin coming up soon. Good stuff.

    Deadline Day Rumour Mill

The Daily Mirror reports that Arsenal have enquired about Chelsea striker Demba Ba, that Queens Park Rangers want Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor on loan and Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom could be heading to Wigan on loan.

Reports in Italy claim Juventus striker Fabio Quagliarella, who has shunned Norwich and West Brom this summer, is set to agree a loan move to West Ham.

    Slow down that Groute bandwagon!
