Scout Report – Erik Lamela

Last Friday was a busy day at White Hart Lane. Having earlier announced the signing of defender Vlad Chiriches, Tottenham broke their transfer record for the third time this summer with the acquisition of Erik Lamela from AS Roma. The 21-year-old arrives in north London for a fee reported to be in the region of £30m, topping the £17m and £26m outlays on Paulinho and Roberto Soldado respectively.

Having seen a deal for Willian hijacked at the last minute by Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas turned to the highly-rated Argentine as he splashed the cash ahead of Gareth Bale’s subsequent departure to Real Madrid. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Lamela is keen to make his mark after a couple of seasons in Serie A:

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great move for me and I’m looking forward to doing my best for the team in every game. I like the English style of football, it’s very offensive and attacking and that’s how I want to play. I have to adapt to playing in the Premier League as quickly as I can.”

The History

A product of the River Plate youth academy, Lamela was offered a contract by Barcelona at the age of 12 but chose to reject the La Liga club and remain in his native country. Handed his debut back in June 2009, Lamela proceeded to play 36 league matches, producing four goals and six assists, but his club’s relegation from the Argentine top-flight saw the suitors circling.

Snapped up by Roma in the summer of 2011 for a bargain €12 million, Lamela’s first season in Italy was more of a settling-in period. From 29 appearances, he produced four goals and seven assists before stepping up considerably under the guidance of Zdenek Zeman last time out. Situated on the right of a front three, the left-footer racked up 15 goals and five assists over 33 league matches, with only four players – including former team-mate and Southampton new boy Pablo Osvaldo – scoring more Serie A goals in 2012/13.

On the international stage, Lamela has scored three goals in four appearances for Argentine U20s and has turned out for the senior side on three occasions.

The Prospects

Crucially for Villas-Boas, Lamela’s versatility affords him options in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. As mentioned above, he was deployed as an inverted winger on the right of a three-man frontline in his final season in Italy to huge success and with the Spurs boss adding the likes of Paulinho and Etienne Capoue to his options in central midfield, Villas-Boas has already rolled out a 4-3-3 against Swansea and Arsenal.

The likes of Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend will surely tumble down the pecking order in light of the Argentine’s arrival, with Lamela’s superb dribbling ability and creativity, allied with a penchant for cutting inside and letting fly from his favoured left foot, making him the hot favourite for a role on the right flank.

Alternatively, Lamela can just as easily be fielded in “the hole” behind a lone forward. While Paulinho impressed in the Gameweek 2 win over the Swans, the formation left Roberto Soldado stranded all too often up front, with Spurs lacking in creativity from central areas in both their last couple of league matches – a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to solve such a problem and hand the Spaniard a little more support in attacking areas; boosting his appeal as he searches for his first league goal from open play.

While the number 10 role is Lamela’s preferred position, the subsequent signing of Christian Eriksen suggests the Dane has been acquired with this berth in mind but, of the pair, the Argentine’s greater adaptability may afford him more game time, with Eriksen likely to be more dependant on specific systems to flourish. Certainly, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s chances of remaining in the mix look slim – having been dropped for the last two matches, the Icelandic international may have to rely on cup appearances and game time off the bench in light of his manager’s summer spending spree.

Priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports, Lamela is set to pick up plenty interest over the international break as Fantasy managers reconsider their midfields after a lacklustre start by many of the big-hitters. With Soldado now up to 9.7 in FPL, the Argentine offers a cheaper route into Villas-Boas’ side ahead of a superb schedule which has Spurs rated top of our fixture ticker over the next six Gameweeks – home clashes against Norwich, West Ham and Hull, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa afford the north London club the chance to quickly bounce back after yesterday’s disappointing derby defeat to Arsenal.

Ozil got 13 assists and 9 goals last season in 25 starts. not just an assist machine then. Sounds like cazorla on speed

Evening/morning DZ. How does this WC team look, providing Rooney is declared fit for the Palace game?
    Mignolet, 4.0
Vertonghen, Chambers, Chester, David Luiz, Vidic
    Walcott, Brady, Redmond, Hernández, Lamela
    Sturridge, Giroud, Rooney

0.4 leftover to upgrade to Suarez. I might tinker with a couple of the defenders.

Vertonghen is tempting, but very expensive. I'd rather get 4 defenders at 5.5/6 than to 6.0/6.5/7.0

Lamela could be awesome, or he could really take some time to settle. I'm staying away until I know which.

Rooney is interesting. I had him for several stretches last year, and he always managed to disappoint. In fact the best thing that he did was to not play on Boxing Day when I captained him. Bale and his hat trick was vc.

Rooney might only be in my team for a couple of GWs then I'd bring in Suarez.

In the Arsenal Spurs game, the only outfield player to score more "Bonus Point System" points than Vertonghen was Giroud. Enough said.

          Giroud 3
          Mertesacker 2
          Gibbs Szcz Jenkinson 1.
Vertonghen was tbe highest scoring for Spurs, but that is to be exlected for a team losing 1-0.

Case for doubling up (which I did for the final few gameweeks last season)

    Last year Chelsea midfield...

    Mata - 11 goals and 18 assists
    Hazard - 9 goals and 16 assists

    This year Arsenal midfield...

    a) Walcott - ____ goals and ____ assists ?
    b) Ozil - _____ goals and _____ assists ?

I think they could easily surpass the Chelski boys.

    Afternoon gents,

I thought I'd share a few thoughts that were swirling around my head as i walked to get my bread rolls earlier. Please feel free to tell me where i may be confused, as these will most likely inform my WC when i activate it. Sorry if any of the below have been covered.

    - A lot of people seem to be going off Soladao after 3 games. Under normal circumstances, 3 games is a good data set to work from, but in Spurs' case its almost certainly not. Spurs have obviously missed the link between mids and him, but with the 2 new signings they may have what they are looking for. If Soldado gets 1, 2 or 3 from open play in the next week or two, it'll change everything (you could say this about any striker, right) and he'll surely establish himself as a must have. Spurs have lots of new players, most of whom now have 3 games' exprirence, the 'click' could be just around the corner. I've got him, and I'm going to hold on for another 2 weeks.

    - With Ozil arrival, Walcott could be freed up for an (occasional) OOP. His disire to play up front is no secret, Arsenal are clearly light on strikers - maybe Wenger is planning to mould him into a true forward now the creative midfield part of his game can be picked up by Ozil. Ozils great strength is clearly providing assists (goal scroing record is nothing to be ignored, mind), however these seem to carry less weight this season, which leads me to....

    - Midfielders need goals to justify big price tags. With this in mind surely Michu is a must have? He's seems to have done everything but score? Admittedly, I've not seen the Swans play as yet, but they've not been dredful and the man has been in amoungst the action from all I've heard. Don't have him at the moment, but he'll almost certainly becoming in when I WC.

    - Negredo looks the best Man City option if he gets starts. More time needed before making the final call on a City striker and see who the manager settles on, but he seems to be adapting as well as can be expected. At this stage, I'll be bringing in Tekkers and keeping Soldado and Sturridge, but this guy could definetly change my plans (and don't get me started on Lukaku). Another reason to wait another 1-2 weeks before the WC.

    - 4-3-3 looks be the way to go. Cleansheets are easier to come by than goals from midfield at the moment, plus centrehalves seem to be attracting the BPS. A backline with coverage from Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man U could reap huge points and could be worth going with 2 x 4.5-5 mids. Of course, it's still early days and if the goals start raining in then we'd be back to 3-4-3/3-5-2 in no time at all. More time needed...

    - United need to play Kagawa or Zaha soon, they look stale to me and need players who can inject some life.

    - New boys are looking good - early days of course and it's a long season, but they don't seem to be push overs most predicted. Just ask Man City. Cat, meet pigeons...

Glad i've kept the WC the more i think about the above. Now, if I can just resist for another 10 days!

Soldado was very close to scoring against arsenal, he is always a good bet for a goal imo

Good post 😀 Nothing like productive bread purchasing

Soldado - agree. Keeping for sure

Walcott - Good point, he may play centrally sometimes. (Could even affect giroud negatively! There's something to ponder) Either way, a fit walcott will always be in my team

Midfielders - Yes they need goals. I am waiting for some to emerge.

City - Yuck. I'm avoiding the lot!

4-3-3 Definitely a good option. I like having subbable/ playable defenders and mids, and choosing 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 depending on fix - thoughts?

WC - Me too - Will fell good to have it intact!

Nice post but I disagree with some things.

Michu first. His stats are not looking promising under the new system and new players. He's creating more chances but not scoring.

Second, Negredo being the best MCY option. Still way too early. He still hasn't even started a game! One bad game in which Silva gets hauled over against Hull and everyone ditches. He'll come around and get like 9 points next week.

a lot has been said about the failure of United to sign a marquee signing during this transfer window..with the current debt, it is difficult to see United willing to spend more than 30 million for a single player..

even at the beginning of the season, I have low expectation for this season..when I looked at players that being bought by the rivals, especially man city and chelsea, not forgetting liverpool, arsenal and spurs, I'll be happy enough if United can challenge for the title, if not winning it..personally, I'm going to be patient and give Moyes 2-3 years to build a title-winning team..on the other hand, I do hope players like anderson, nani and kagawa will step up their game and stays injury-free for the whole season..

    from a disgruntled fan 🙁

Cleverly's presence isn't really the problem. He's not that bad playing deep, picking the ball up and sticking to a man.

The real problem comes when he has to make a decent forward pass. Almost non-existent.

agreed..no offense to cleverley as he is a decent player..but in a tight game, we lack a playmaker that can provide a killer pass that can lead to scoring chances..i do think, had rooney playing against liverpool, the end result could be different..

I wish people new what debt ownership/private equity/leveraged buyouts is. Man united is not really in debt, they have to pay a lot to service their debt ownership. The reason why man united dont spend big is actually because they dont want to be in debt like the chelseas of the world, strangely.

        This is from I found.

"The Glazers took over ownership of Manchester United in 2005, a move that forced the family to borrow a significant amount of cash and take on a hefty load of debt. In fact, The Wall Street Journal article mentioned above reports that the Glazer’s purchased Manchester United for £1.47 billion—much of which was borrowed through bonds."

        http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1677367-breaking-down-manchester-uniteds-finances-and-how-large-their-debt-is

The majority of the cash used by Glazer to purchase Manchester United came in the form of loans, much of which were secured against the club's assets, incurring interest payments of over £60 million per annum.

Would be nice if Kagawa got a game, he's not even injured right now. Our team when fit isn't that bad even though others strengthened around us.

I don't think that's true at all. Sure he's a bit slower but he reads the game very well and can organise the defense alongside Vidic.

Seems to make a lot of interceptions and can still do a job without pace.

Not sure he has to be a typical wide man just kind of over that side of the pitch - if that's even a thing!

I just don't see him playing behind RVP with Rooney around and the left is where we are weakest.

from what i saw last year, eventhough kagawa starts on the left, he will drifts inside and change position with rooney..what made sir alex ferguson successful for the past 2 decades is due to his willingness to learn, adapt and change to new tactics and formation..this is where moyes has to learn, he can't stick to the same old rigid formation as during his time at everton

To be honest Valencia did well in the last 3 games. Kagawa. Hmmm it seems Moyes doesn't like him. Young.. Oh man Welbeck, Nani, Valencia are much better than him.

7 goals in 84 games in Spain

Ended up going for my 4 point hit. Will probably regret going so early but still...

    Boruc
    Walker Chester Zabaletta
    Brady Oscar Silva Walcott
    Benteke Soldado Giroud

    Krul Coleman Kim Ward

    Thoughts?

I'm tempted to wildcard as I want - HBA, Vidic, Sturridge, Lamela but I think I'll stick for now.

Seeing loads of Giroud/Sturridge/Beneteke strike forces on WC......If you are lucky enough to pick the right (C) each week I suppose you will do quite well....WARNING IT IS GOING TO BE A NIGHTMARE!!!!! . Nothing wrong with having a sub 7.5 striker in your squad in order to have RVP.

    Many available:

    Bent
    RVW
EVE striker....not known yet but one will emerge
    Odemwingie
    Chamakh
    Fletcher
    Anelka
    Carroll when he returns

imagine a table that cost 100 quid, glazers buy 30 pounds of it and wants someone else to buy the rest of the table for 70 quid. They get a loan of 70 quid to own 70% of the table for 5 years and they pay it back

ownership structure of man united is: 30% equity(glazers) 70% debt

              its not in debt

what made us fan angry about the takeover is that, before the takeover, man united is debt-free..and then glazer came and bought the club through loans, and ask united to pay back the loan + interest

when you consider that glazer's bought the club with 1.47 billion, the 10m profit per year + 80 million from a player's sale is nothing much compared to the ampunt of interest the owner has to pay to the bank

Not answering your q, but let's remember ward prowse should get a lot of assists. He takes all indirect free kicks and plays a lot of good balls too.

Yeah I think he will lose his place that's why I wondered who you'd have to play if you waited a week on the transfer. Hits for defenders never really work but it would depend who takes Toure's place in your current team.

Hey dude. Thanks for the response, back at work so will be a little slow now.

Yes, I think trying to keep flexiblity to go from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3 is essential, I'm looking at Redmond in and crossing my fingers that Ravel comes good. They could before step of the bench and get points when needed.

Glad I'm not the only one with GC left. Plenty of RMWCT posts about.

Aye I'm at work too. I have no aversion to a lot of cheap players, which will be required for such flexibility. It doesn't seem as exciting when a 5 mil player gets 2,2,7 compared to a 10mil player getting 7,6,9 - but in terms of points per $, it's the same thing!

While i will agree that Defenders seem to be finally getting their fair share of Baps if a CS is kept, but come on...there has been an abnormal amount of CS this season. Surely that will not continue!

When normal goal scoring rates return....and midfielders start producing again how do you intend on upgrading your midfield without taking a hit with 3 or 4 expensive defenders in your squad ?

    Sorry guys.....no 5 2 3 for me....or even 4 3 3 for that matter!

if defenders don't keep a clean sheet or score then of course they won't get baps
Same goes for every player in the game.

Clean sheets are just worth more BP than assists now, which is where the shift is.

Agreed, but when a CS is not kept, he mids with assists should get their share of Baps.

Not quite correct. There have been hot topics which show that assists don't equate to Baps.

I reckon the sample size is still to small to tell though. Lampard grabbed two in the Chelsea Villa game, for example. It does appear that just an assist won't be enough, but we don't know that quite yet.

Is there any evidence to suggest that those who grab an assist or even two get Baps? I've seen plenty of evidence to the contrary. Its not like there hasn't been goals scored.

      I suggest to have

Three 5s or 6s DEF AND

Two exploits expensive mids and one middle price mid AND

Three long term exploits strikers AND

Two good 4.0 DEF + one 5s or 6s mid + one 4.5 mids are the best thing at the moment.

      Can play 433 or 343

Giroud's cheaper for similar production and similarly easy fixtures, and will likely have better service from Cazorla, Walcott, Ozil, Ramsey, et al

          other flaws?

it is an imperfect team when its an RVP team; this is pretty good

PHernandez may also be better than HBA over the long haul

If you get a better team by not spending all your money, it is okay, and gives you more flexibility down the road.

      Like it.

      Think Walcott will outscore Ozil.

      change Sturridge to Giroud

change Gibbs to Vidic or Terry

have a plan of what you're going to do if Dawson loses his place

think about who you're going to get to replace HBA when he's out of form and can't hit the side of a barn

Yeah possibly but the problem for me is that i'm in a draft league where we cant have the same players, so soon as he gets a run of games he will attract big interest.
