Scout Report – Erik Lamela

Last Friday was a busy day at White Hart Lane. Having earlier announced the signing of defender Vlad Chiriches, Tottenham broke their transfer record for the third time this summer with the acquisition of Erik Lamela from AS Roma. The 21-year-old arrives in north London for a fee reported to be in the region of £30m, topping the £17m and £26m outlays on Paulinho and Roberto Soldado respectively.

Having seen a deal for Willian hijacked at the last minute by Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas turned to the highly-rated Argentine as he splashed the cash ahead of Gareth Bale’s subsequent departure to Real Madrid. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Lamela is keen to make his mark after a couple of seasons in Serie A:

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great move for me and I’m looking forward to doing my best for the team in every game. I like the English style of football, it’s very offensive and attacking and that’s how I want to play. I have to adapt to playing in the Premier League as quickly as I can.”

The History

A product of the River Plate youth academy, Lamela was offered a contract by Barcelona at the age of 12 but chose to reject the La Liga club and remain in his native country. Handed his debut back in June 2009, Lamela proceeded to play 36 league matches, producing four goals and six assists, but his club’s relegation from the Argentine top-flight saw the suitors circling.

Snapped up by Roma in the summer of 2011 for a bargain €12 million, Lamela’s first season in Italy was more of a settling-in period. From 29 appearances, he produced four goals and seven assists before stepping up considerably under the guidance of Zdenek Zeman last time out. Situated on the right of a front three, the left-footer racked up 15 goals and five assists over 33 league matches, with only four players – including former team-mate and Southampton new boy Pablo Osvaldo – scoring more Serie A goals in 2012/13.

On the international stage, Lamela has scored three goals in four appearances for Argentine U20s and has turned out for the senior side on three occasions.

The Prospects

Crucially for Villas-Boas, Lamela’s versatility affords him options in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. As mentioned above, he was deployed as an inverted winger on the right of a three-man frontline in his final season in Italy to huge success and with the Spurs boss adding the likes of Paulinho and Etienne Capoue to his options in central midfield, Villas-Boas has already rolled out a 4-3-3 against Swansea and Arsenal.

The likes of Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend will surely tumble down the pecking order in light of the Argentine’s arrival, with Lamela’s superb dribbling ability and creativity, allied with a penchant for cutting inside and letting fly from his favoured left foot, making him the hot favourite for a role on the right flank.

Alternatively, Lamela can just as easily be fielded in “the hole” behind a lone forward. While Paulinho impressed in the Gameweek 2 win over the Swans, the formation left Roberto Soldado stranded all too often up front, with Spurs lacking in creativity from central areas in both their last couple of league matches – a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to solve such a problem and hand the Spaniard a little more support in attacking areas; boosting his appeal as he searches for his first league goal from open play.

While the number 10 role is Lamela’s preferred position, the subsequent signing of Christian Eriksen suggests the Dane has been acquired with this berth in mind but, of the pair, the Argentine’s greater adaptability may afford him more game time, with Eriksen likely to be more dependant on specific systems to flourish. Certainly, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s chances of remaining in the mix look slim – having been dropped for the last two matches, the Icelandic international may have to rely on cup appearances and game time off the bench in light of his manager’s summer spending spree.

Priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports, Lamela is set to pick up plenty interest over the international break as Fantasy managers reconsider their midfields after a lacklustre start by many of the big-hitters. With Soldado now up to 9.7 in FPL, the Argentine offers a cheaper route into Villas-Boas’ side ahead of a superb schedule which has Spurs rated top of our fixture ticker over the next six Gameweeks – home clashes against Norwich, West Ham and Hull, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa afford the north London club the chance to quickly bounce back after yesterday’s disappointing derby defeat to Arsenal.

Have an american style fantasy football draft coming up after gameweek 5. Please bear in mind that a lot of the other managers in my league have big names already. Your help would be appreciated.

Thoughts on my sales (need to bolster my defence):

    Adam Johnson
    Nacer Chadli
    James Morrison
    Cabaye
    Azpilicueta

    Thoughts on my potential buys:

    Ramsey
    Ashley Young
    Mamadou Sakho
    Christian Eriksen/Lamela
    Santon
    Distin.

Just personal opinion, so please bear that in mind.

      Sell
      Sell
      Sell
      Sell
      Sell

Ramsey may not come back to the fold when Arteta is fit.
Ashley Young has not really proven himself, and is in competition with Nani. United midfield options are poor in general.
Sakho is a good shout, but he may not start straight away. He will probably feature quite a lot later on in the year.
Eriksen is likely to get a lot of assists and help his team out, Lamela less assists but more goals as he is a bit more selfish. For me, Eriksen is the better bet, but in all note este, neither are as nailed on as we would hope.
Santon is in and out of the team. For a Newcastle defender with attacking potential, Debuchy is the better bet, or for centre halves, Coloccini for 5 mil is nailed on and a gaur entered points scorer, whereas Yanga is more flexible, so can play at left back as well as partnering him in defence.
Distinct is a good call, although Evertons fixtures are neither here nor there.

      Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot for your help. An american style draft is difficult seeing as most of the top players from last season have been purchased.

I would tend to agree but for the little niggle that Barkley has been absolutely outstanding. Arguably their best player, bar Baines. It wouldn't make sense to drop him just because the other guys have been traditionally first team players.

As I say, I agree that there is competition. But it's going a bit far to say "one bad game". What manager is that ridiculously fickle that he drops outstanding players after one bad game? Martinez would have had to drop every Wigan player every week under that policy 😉

😀 Yeah, there may be some wishful thinking in there. I originally got him temporarily for price rises, fully expecting him to lose his place. But after seeing some of his play, his stats and what Martinez and fans have said, I've decided to risk keeping him.

He's basically Everton's child prodigy and fans have been talking about him having a breakthrough season for a couple of years now. At some point he will become a regular first team player and when he does, he will have to displace someone. I don't see any compelling reason why that absolutely cannot happen this year. A risk, of course, but this total certainty I see on here that he is 100% dead in the water is misplaced in my opinion.

Using the analysis on that TotalFPL article i was talking about, a goal is worth over four times as much as an assist in terms of converting into bonus points.

An assist is essentially worth an extra .44 points and a goal 1.77, so goal scoring midfielders rather than assisters is without doubt the way to go it appears.

So Michu, Walcott, Ben Arfa all look to be more worthwhile than Ozil, Silva, etc going by this.

you can turn it around! last year I was outside 600k and at one point made it inside the top 10k mid gw. generally how are you doing? I've been pretty happy with my team and my results but still find myself at about 246k. good luck with that policy! I don't take a ton of hits but will take one when I think it makes sense

council (organizing this FA cup) is keeping me busy, especially when paired with trying to organize this draft league with conrad, tm245, gink, and superdunny. not to mention I just got my wisdom teeth out this morning and I leave for college on the 12th so need to start shopping and packing!

Jeepers, you've got your hands full!

I'm going to try to keep the discipline with the policy. Hits can work but I find that more often than not, they don't for me. Ironically, I find that short-term explosive hits are more profitable than what I consider to be long-term ones.

my two best hits (dgw's aside) were bale in for his hattrick last year and then a week later walcott in for his hattrick (though it was a shame because marv was the other part of the hit and I bench him when he scored double digits iirc)

I think it was mostly because Skrtel was pounding him all game long. I don't think he'll return as high numbers as his previous two seasons, but he'll definitely be up there for highest scoring player this year as well, especially with Suarez losing the first 5 GWs.

They did play some games with two strikers last season, in a sort of 4-4-2. I'm not saying they'll return to it, but it's an option. I think most likely yeah, Suarez on the wing and 4-2-3-1. Served them well so far.

Good question. Dzeko is at least nailed on for some minutes - and Toure may still be injured, but may also get some time until Sakho is ready. Of course you will also probably have more cover for a defender than a striker. They both have to go but I'd say Dzeko first.

      Hey guys,

What will spurrs midfield be looking like in your opinion for the 2 coming games? Will there be a lot of rotation / substitutions ?

Can we expect either of Chadli or Paulinho to get 2 full games?

I would really like to get in their midfield but only have 7.8 (can not afford Lamela nor Eriksen).

Now that Capoue is injured I was thinking something like:

      Paulinho Dembele
      Lamela Eriksen Chadli
      Soldado

      Cheers

I think Paulinho is one of the best players they have, he'll play. Partnering Sandro or Dembele, most likely Sandro (or both).

That tactic looks about right to me, but not sure Eriksen will be thrown right into it. Might go 4-3-3 a game or two more and use him from the bench.

Eriksen is excellent, but definitely Lamela, especially for FPL. He's much more of a goal-scorer and is plug-n-play into both 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1.

Thx Dogba, I agree I really liked Paulinho last games.
Would you happen to have any statistics regarding his offensive potential? Should we not be worried with the arrival of all the new offensive players?

Obviously if they play 4-2-3-1 it will hurt Paulinho's potential a lot. I don't see any reason to get him when there are alternatives like Nolan and PHernandez who are guaranteed to play close to the striker.

I think Lamela will be the one to get, and I think he will be nailed on. He's the closest thing they've got to a Bale replacement, goal-scoring left-footer.

I do however my question was to the forum and I doubt that 2.5% of them that play the FPL are on this forum... 😉

Yeah I'm with you tbh, assists are great but you want goals with 10 million so Giroud and Wally are still the best Arsenal options imo. But then again maybe he'll find the premier league really easy and score loads? remains to be seen

Have I missed the goals Wally scored this season?

Also very true, but its early days the same could be said for RVP, only a brace at swansea first GW to talk about...

indeed, I will wait to prove himself, I have made a bit of extra £ this GW with price rises as well so maybe I might jump on the band wagon in the future but not from the off. Of course that means Im banking on Giroud and wally to be able to finish... And they are no Ronaldo / Benzema... thats one thing people are missing, Ronny was on the end of most of Ozils assists!
