Scout Report – Erik Lamela

Last Friday was a busy day at White Hart Lane. Having earlier announced the signing of defender Vlad Chiriches, Tottenham broke their transfer record for the third time this summer with the acquisition of Erik Lamela from AS Roma. The 21-year-old arrives in north London for a fee reported to be in the region of £30m, topping the £17m and £26m outlays on Paulinho and Roberto Soldado respectively.

Having seen a deal for Willian hijacked at the last minute by Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas turned to the highly-rated Argentine as he splashed the cash ahead of Gareth Bale’s subsequent departure to Real Madrid. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Lamela is keen to make his mark after a couple of seasons in Serie A:

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great move for me and I’m looking forward to doing my best for the team in every game. I like the English style of football, it’s very offensive and attacking and that’s how I want to play. I have to adapt to playing in the Premier League as quickly as I can.”

The History

A product of the River Plate youth academy, Lamela was offered a contract by Barcelona at the age of 12 but chose to reject the La Liga club and remain in his native country. Handed his debut back in June 2009, Lamela proceeded to play 36 league matches, producing four goals and six assists, but his club’s relegation from the Argentine top-flight saw the suitors circling.

Snapped up by Roma in the summer of 2011 for a bargain €12 million, Lamela’s first season in Italy was more of a settling-in period. From 29 appearances, he produced four goals and seven assists before stepping up considerably under the guidance of Zdenek Zeman last time out. Situated on the right of a front three, the left-footer racked up 15 goals and five assists over 33 league matches, with only four players – including former team-mate and Southampton new boy Pablo Osvaldo – scoring more Serie A goals in 2012/13.

On the international stage, Lamela has scored three goals in four appearances for Argentine U20s and has turned out for the senior side on three occasions.

The Prospects

Crucially for Villas-Boas, Lamela’s versatility affords him options in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. As mentioned above, he was deployed as an inverted winger on the right of a three-man frontline in his final season in Italy to huge success and with the Spurs boss adding the likes of Paulinho and Etienne Capoue to his options in central midfield, Villas-Boas has already rolled out a 4-3-3 against Swansea and Arsenal.

The likes of Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend will surely tumble down the pecking order in light of the Argentine’s arrival, with Lamela’s superb dribbling ability and creativity, allied with a penchant for cutting inside and letting fly from his favoured left foot, making him the hot favourite for a role on the right flank.

Alternatively, Lamela can just as easily be fielded in “the hole” behind a lone forward. While Paulinho impressed in the Gameweek 2 win over the Swans, the formation left Roberto Soldado stranded all too often up front, with Spurs lacking in creativity from central areas in both their last couple of league matches – a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to solve such a problem and hand the Spaniard a little more support in attacking areas; boosting his appeal as he searches for his first league goal from open play.

While the number 10 role is Lamela’s preferred position, the subsequent signing of Christian Eriksen suggests the Dane has been acquired with this berth in mind but, of the pair, the Argentine’s greater adaptability may afford him more game time, with Eriksen likely to be more dependant on specific systems to flourish. Certainly, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s chances of remaining in the mix look slim – having been dropped for the last two matches, the Icelandic international may have to rely on cup appearances and game time off the bench in light of his manager’s summer spending spree.

Priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports, Lamela is set to pick up plenty interest over the international break as Fantasy managers reconsider their midfields after a lacklustre start by many of the big-hitters. With Soldado now up to 9.7 in FPL, the Argentine offers a cheaper route into Villas-Boas’ side ahead of a superb schedule which has Spurs rated top of our fixture ticker over the next six Gameweeks – home clashes against Norwich, West Ham and Hull, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa afford the north London club the chance to quickly bounce back after yesterday’s disappointing derby defeat to Arsenal.

Any fans of HBO's OZ on here? Finished all 8 seasons? One of my favourite shows of all time but it's so emotionally draining and intense that i cant bring myself to start watching season 3 after just finishing 1 and 2. Literally the most intense show i've ever seen

I fancy starting a new football based blog, I previously had one on looking for value bets and more specifically accumulator bets.

Any suggestions as to a theme for a new one? (not betting related)

I was thinking about one which focused on the performances of English players in the Premier League.

      It isn't a bad idea.

I do a little look occasionally at the % of premier league teams with
      English/British manager.
      English/British captain.
      English/British goalkeeper.

Always low and always seem to be getting lower. Captain usually is highest.

The Mirallas hate around here would be ridiculous even if there were some decent replacements. The fact that there aren't makes it just laughable. 3 games into the season what has changed every bodies minds so dramatically. I accept his finishing has been poor but he still shows tremendous fpl potential with 9 goal attempts with 6 of those from inside the box.
The one caveat I would put in is if he loses his place but I would never take a player out just because he might lose his place. Always wait until he is actually dropped rather than guessing that this is going to be the case.
Until, Mirallas loses his place or until other credible options become available, he stays for me.

The price drop, the fact he's been substituted in every game (It's hard to be an effective player if you're averaging 70 minutes unless you're Dzeko), and the revelation that Deulofeu gets cheaper the more he plays also has people a little nervous I think.

You know as well as I do, when he starts scoring his price will rise again. If you keep buying players after they score well to chase the price rise you'll have tremendous TV with a rubbish rank. If you anticipate big scores you'll have a good rank and TV. My current rank is just over 1000 with a TV of 102.3

Some guy in, another guy out.

Capturing very important price changes on your WC.

Taking some midfielder out cause he almost scored only 9 goals in 3 games.

    Ming/Given

    Zab/Vidic/Terry (Turner/Chester)

    RVP/Studge/Benteke

He's a striker listed as a midfielder and Stoke don't have anyone bar Crouch so he'll get a lot of game time plus clean sheet bonuses as a striker. I couldn't see anyone better for 5.5.

Good point. I just want Vidics clean sheet against Palace and his good run of fixtures coming up plus I want Terry because Chelsea will concede the least this year and he's a goal threat. Defenders are scoring big bonus points this year so I'm aiming to capitalize on that. Aurnatovic will be my punt and differential seeing as he's a striker playing as a midfielder. It will be like having four strikers.

Ok, avoiding the Ozil bandwagon but can't resist Lamela.
Used WC so in it for the long haul now.

    Migs
    Coleman, Jose, Zabs, Whittaker
    Lamela, Walcott, Michu
    Sturridge, Giroud, Benteke

    Subs in order of usage.
Davis, Barkley, Brady, Baker (Bench Fodder)

Can rotate Whittaker for Barkley/Brady depending on fixture and whether whittaker remains nailed on. if not, can change him to chester.

    Thoughts ?

I like it a lot. Defense and forwards bang in form and you're looking to capitalize on qualiy midfielders fixtures. You can't do much more than that. I guess you're just hoping RVP doesn't score a hat trick vs Palace.

I'm captaining RVP and when he scores a few vs Palace it will shoot me up the table. He scored two vs Swansea away and Swansea are a lot better than Palace. Plus Moyes needs his first win at OT and he will play his strongest team for 90mins to get a big win.

It's not in the rules that I can find, the best I can find is this disclaimer :-

            How do player prices change?

Once the season has started, player prices may change by £0.1m a day, based on activity in the transfer market.

Both the formula used to calculate this change and the time of the change include variable factors, and won’t be revealed to game players.

so everyone (well almost everyone) on here went on & on about picking mirallas before the season started, you saw him in almost every template team as a result, he then has a few quite games (as have practically all the midfielders so far) & now the same people are all saying mirallas out & everyone's following suit?

history seems to be repeating itself

I'm keeping for now, would rather have someone with form but too early to abandon especially for a hit.

seems that way, thing is, if mirallas was such a bad choice in the first place why would you be so quick to follow the same people that made that bad choice in the first place? i would be inclined to do the opposite & keep him if it was me

do you watch football and follow team news?
or are your decisions based on what other players think and do and what you think about them?

lol you missed the sarcasm there, the point was that you shouldnt follow a bunch of people who made such a bad choice in the first place

Thats a big call. I don't think Mirrallas was a 'bad decision' for GW1. His stats even now prove that he was still a good bet. Its a pity he hasn't been clinical enough with his chances.

maybe not a bad decision but certainly a punt, mirllas previously wasn't seen a a Fantasy prospect, basically everyone saw martinez as the new manager, recognised that mirallas would play in a more advanced position in a more attacking team & thought 'bingo' when in reality they should think 'new manager, needs to time to settle, gonna take time to gel' etc etc.. that's how i look at it.

it wasn't a bad choice, you never know when a player hits form and loses it
it was a good choice that hasn't worked out so far and there is no indication that this situation could change in the nearest future, but there are factors that indicate that it can get worse (off form, Everton don't score goals, Delofeu pushing etc)

I watched 2 everton games and the highlights of the third one and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets dropped to the bench soon (maybe against Chelsea already).

It's not bout beeing sheeps.. For exemple I never Pick someone based on what others are saying bout him... I watch a loooot of games and then decide who to transfer.. I was very entusistic about Mirallas preseason because he, with walcott and michu are the mids with a real eye on goals.. But after 3 gw > no assist / no goals.. It's normal to start beeing sceptical bout his form, no?

which ones? Shooting form 30 yards? Key passes similar HBA just passing to worse players. Just pens add to HBAs chances. I do think he is better for now, but in no way is the man on form.
