The Digest – Gameweek 3

Our final look at the previous round of fixtures sees us reassess one of Swansea’s many Spaniards, acknowledge Liverpool’s options at both ends of the field, while bracing ourselves as wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers force player prices up over the international break.

The Player

Last term, it was all about Michu at the Liberty. Michael Laudrup’s acquisition of the former Rayo Vallecano player proved one of the canniest pieces of business in 2012/13 as the Spaniard racked up the goals in his debut season for the Welsh outfit and offered Fantasy managers a mid-price gem for their five-man midfields.

Initially, though, it was the acquisition of Pablo Hernandez from Valencia that was regarded as the real coup. Arriving in a £5.5 million deal, the playmaker added a real touch of class to the Swans’ wide areas but with injuries and indifferent form plaguing his displays, Hernandez flattered to deceive. Although he turned out 30 times in the league, the winger managed the full 90 minutes on only 10 occasions and, with three goals and eight assists to his name, registered 110 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points – only fourth best in the Swansea midfield.

This time round, it’s been a little different. After an impressive pre-season, Hernandez has been the standout Fantasy performer for Laudrup’s side – Sunday’s goal and assist in the 2-0 win at West Brom highlighted his growing influence as he becomes more accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League in his second season on English soil. Having supplied the assist for Wilfried Bony’s consolation in the Gameweek 1 home defeat by United, Hernandez has played a part in all three of the Swans’ league goals so far – factor in two assists in two Europa League games and it’s clear his consistency is on the up.

Granted, while Hernandez is no Michu in terms of finding the net, he has targetted “seven or eight” strikes after his impressive start. Certainly, we’re not expecting double-digit goal returns but with a relatively budget-friendly price tag across the Fantasy games, he could be a real value contender over the campaign. Fantasy managers have been quick act on the back of his Hawthorns exploits – Hernandez has already risen by 0.1 since the weekend and as the bandwagon picks up pace, another price hike looks imminent over the break.

The Team

Perhaps, upon reflection, the Luis Suarez situation was somehow a blessing in disguise. The media circus surrounding the Uruguayan’s domestic suspension for the first six games of the season, twinned with Arsenal’s ultimately fruitless chase for his signature, kept the focus off the players on the field and allowed Brendan Rodgers’ side to quietly prepare for the campaign ahead.

So far, it’s worked wonders. Three successive 1-0 wins have sent the Reds to the top of the table and with options right across the backline and further up the field, there’s every reason to invest in Rodgers’ side ahead of a kind run of upcoming fixtures.

The arrival of Mamadou Sakho will further strengthen a backline yet to concede and put Kolo Toure’s owners on edge. The Ivorian’s current groin injury hardly helps but with Rodgers labelling the £15m Frenchman “a marquee signing”, he looks odds-on to become a regular alongside Daniel Agger at the back, with the new Bonus Points System boosting the Reds’ defensive appeal.

Philippe Coutinho may have yet to pick up the attacking points after a strong pre-season but his owners will be intrigued by Rodgers’ comments yesterday. After signing Victor Moses on loan from Chelsea, the Reds boss suggested the Brazilian could occasionally be moved to the centre behind Daniel Sturridge, with Moses capable of filling in on the left.

Sturridge’s prolific start, which has seen his bag the winner in all three Gameweeks, is making him an irresistible Fantasy force right now as managers scramble to acquire his signature. At 9.1 to Suarez’ 10.9 in FPL, Sturridge is doing more than enough to suggest he’ll be the better value of the two and could easily outscore the Uruguayan upon his return in Gameweek 6 at Sunderland, given his more advanced role. Suarez, with an ownership of just 0.5%, however, looks a real differential in the making for that Black Cats’ showdown.

The Talking Point

The first international break of the season always brings with it huge temptation. A two-week break affords the time to reassess our initial line-ups and contemplate the deadwood in our 15-man squads – for many, the lure of that first wildcard proves irresistible.

This season, the introduction of the new Bonus Points System in FPL has also proved significant. Plenty have been persuaded to restructure their sides and opt for some premium-priced options at the back; after three rounds of matches, only two midfielders, six forwards and three keepers have scored more than 17 points, compared to 14 defenders.

The influx of new signings over the last few days has also proved alluring. Mesut Ozil’s arrival at Arsenal and Tottenham’s acquisition of Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela hands up top-class talents to consider for our midfields, while Samuel Eto’o’s switch to Chelsea and Romelu Lukaku’s loan move to Everton have altered the Fantasy landscape. Indeed, such is the multitude of in-form options up front, Robin Van Persie is losing owners despite a schedule which sees him welcome Palace, West Brom, Southampton and Stoke over the next six Gameweeks.

Since the weekend’s action, the frantic market activity has inflated several players’ prices. With Olivier Giroud also firing in the goals, the Arsenal man – along with Sturridge – has earned himself a substantial Fantasy bandwagon and could, conceivably rise the maximum 0.3 before the next round of matches. The likes of Yaya Toure, Hernandez, Jose Enrique, Pablo Zabaleta and Fraizer Campbell continue to acquire plenty new owners, while this afternoon’s addition of the new players is likely to spark further frenzy amongst the Fantasy fraternity, with the deadline still 11 days away.

Despite an absolute frenzy in the transfer market for Spurs, we had a net spend of 3 million profit!!! Arsenal with one massive swoop, on transfer deadline day, had a cumulative spent of 32 million loss!

While I honestly think we got some great deals in the transfer window, I think with their one signing Arsenal completely levelled the field. What a stunning signing!

basically a lot spent on a lot of potential... except soldado, he's proven... & paulihno looks solid already.

fellow kolo toure owners, some thoughts on the predicament.

as it stands liverpool have spent a 'you have to start him for that amount of money' fee on sakho. i'm fully expecting to make the switch at some point sooner rather than later (assuming kolo is back fit in the next 2 matches).

skrtel was forced in at the deep end on sunday but i thought did well, more headaches. all in all a still injured player with sakho's arrival (i see ilori as one for the future, the newer hopefully much better version of danny wilson then coates waiting in the wings) and skrtel's performance is a big win on sunday looks extremely grim for kolo.

possible saving graces? there are two i feel.
the temporary: glen johnson's injury (still yet to be revealed properly) could open up the right back spot for a couple of games for toure. wisdom (4.4) and kelly (4.4) are other options there, i just feel it's a possible as toure covered there for man city in his last couple of season there.
the permanent: considering liverpool aren't in europe this season rodgers has stock-piled a strangely large number of centre backs, even with coates' long term injury. agger, sakho, toure, skrtel, ilori and wisdom. could he have a 3-5-2 in mind? one of the main advantages of the 3 man defence formation is it opens up 2 centre forward spots, with suarez due back very soon and sturirdge on fire in a central position it certainly has its merits. it's actually rather beautiful http://lineupbuilder.com/?sk=19my8

could be wishful thinking but getting sakho and ilori without letting skrtel go did get me thinking. from what we currently do know i think a toure -> agger/sakho move is looking inevitable i fear. or get mignolet in as his 5.5 (or whatever it is now) would be the cheapest route into that backline now, boruc could then change to a southampton defender instead.

think mulling over toure for another gameweek (for those not wildcarding) is worth it though just to get a more definitive answer. ideally he is fit for swansea so more of the variables are in place.

Versus Anzhi too, a little digging tells me. So not really a success then but that might show that he wants to use it.

But as much as I want my Toure to play, I can't see him experimenting whilst perched atop the PL.

Interesting shout, could possibly be what Rodgers means by playing Coutinho in the centre. Currently none of the Liverpool attackers look quite right in the wide forward positions apart from Sterling who is raw. Sold Downing. Coutinho looks a bit wasted on the left after being shunted there to let Aspas move into the hol (because he's not suited out wide either), with Henderson a hardworking but not naturally good fit on the right.

Liverpool didn't look good defensively when they tried 3 at the back last season though, if I recall correctly. Neither did any side who played 3 at the back. Maybe the CB personnel are crucial to make it work, Agger Sakho Kolo might have what it takes.

my main hope is that Fellaini allows our more creative players to shine. My feeling is that the likes of Carrick, Cleverlyey etc do nothing but pass square as they are paralysed by fear. If they go high up the pitch and lose possession they are unable to win it back, so they don't take chances. I also hop it means Kagawa gets a go.

Ironically the most unpopular player, Nani, is unpopular as he does lose the ball trying to make things happen in attack. Often he runs into blind channels or tries to beat 2 or 3 men, not because he has poor decision making (although at times he does) but beciase he has no other choice.

Yeah, it would be nice for the side to loosen up a bit.
I just want Moyes to never play Young again and only use Valencia as last resort ccover

No, I'm being suckered into the frenzy of the transfers/international break - Ozil has got me panicking about TV. Just going to stick with my Dzeko -> Benteke plan and leave my team alone.

Is this too crazy for a WC team?

    Viviano - Boruc
    Walker - Ferdinand - Cahill - Sakho - Coleman
    Nolan - Lampard - Walcott - Brady - Hernandez
    Benteke - Giroud - Sturridge

I quite like the look of it but it's heavy in defence.

    What to you guys think?

I'm struggling not to put my money in defence. I'm toying with a very similar team.
There aren't really any MID big hitters currently on form so its tricky. Wish I had 5 strikers an 3 mids. Maybe lose Walker and Sakho and put Migs in net? Then fill in the blanks with Collins or Collocini et al.

If I can manage to get 0.2 more from the price rises, I can have Sakho for Rat. I don't think I will be WCing this GW if I can pull that off.

    Cech
    Terry Pieters Koscielny Sakho
    Countinho Nolan Walcott
    Soldado Giroud Sturridge.

Looks good to go! Just need the 0.2!!

"We are delighted to have brought Loïc Remy to the club in this window and we believe he will form an exciting and effective partnership with Papiss Cisse,"

I'm certainly not interested in him but anyone who was considering Remy but wondering about being behind Cisse can now rest assured that he's in Pardwew's plans...

Can't be many takers anyway though surely? Unless you've got RVP then possibly?

    Boruc (Foster)
    Terry Coleman Turner (Toure Ramage)
    Walcott Silva COutinho Mirallas (Kim)
    Sturridge Soldado Dzeko

Need to get rid of Foster Toure and Ramage for sure, but also want rid of Mirallas and Dzeko

Thinking of doing Mirallas->Brady and Dzeko->Giroud (-4) but with the amount of changes needed im temped to wildcard, thoughts?

    Thanks in advance!

So is Fellaini the answer to Man U coverage for those of us fearful about not having RVP from GW4 onwards?

I can move Morrison out and put in Fellaini and solve the injury issue I have with Morrison, avoid taking a hit to get in RVP and still have the towering Belgium as my Man U cover.

    Reasonable compromise?

Terrible compromise, instead of the back to back highest scorer in FPL and man u's main center forward, on all set pieces and pens, you are going to bring in a defensive mid?

I'd agree with you if I was convinced he was going to be a defensive mid. Have we heard any views yet from Moyes on where he might okay him. Too early I guess. If he was centre mid then I'd consider him an option.

I'm still hopeful that Kagawa will be the answer. Latest statement (see above) suggests that he will get a chance soon so I'll be waiting for that.
