Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 3

Our final look at the previous round of fixtures sees us reassess one of Swansea’s many Spaniards, acknowledge Liverpool’s options at both ends of the field, while bracing ourselves as wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers force player prices up over the international break.

The Player

Last term, it was all about Michu at the Liberty. Michael Laudrup’s acquisition of the former Rayo Vallecano player proved one of the canniest pieces of business in 2012/13 as the Spaniard racked up the goals in his debut season for the Welsh outfit and offered Fantasy managers a mid-price gem for their five-man midfields.

Initially, though, it was the acquisition of Pablo Hernandez from Valencia that was regarded as the real coup. Arriving in a £5.5 million deal, the playmaker added a real touch of class to the Swans’ wide areas but with injuries and indifferent form plaguing his displays, Hernandez flattered to deceive. Although he turned out 30 times in the league, the winger managed the full 90 minutes on only 10 occasions and, with three goals and eight assists to his name, registered 110 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points – only fourth best in the Swansea midfield.

This time round, it’s been a little different. After an impressive pre-season, Hernandez has been the standout Fantasy performer for Laudrup’s side – Sunday’s goal and assist in the 2-0 win at West Brom highlighted his growing influence as he becomes more accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League in his second season on English soil. Having supplied the assist for Wilfried Bony’s consolation in the Gameweek 1 home defeat by United, Hernandez has played a part in all three of the Swans’ league goals so far – factor in two assists in two Europa League games and it’s clear his consistency is on the up.

Granted, while Hernandez is no Michu in terms of finding the net, he has targetted “seven or eight” strikes after his impressive start. Certainly, we’re not expecting double-digit goal returns but with a relatively budget-friendly price tag across the Fantasy games, he could be a real value contender over the campaign. Fantasy managers have been quick act on the back of his Hawthorns exploits – Hernandez has already risen by 0.1 since the weekend and as the bandwagon picks up pace, another price hike looks imminent over the break.

The Team

Perhaps, upon reflection, the Luis Suarez situation was somehow a blessing in disguise. The media circus surrounding the Uruguayan’s domestic suspension for the first six games of the season, twinned with Arsenal’s ultimately fruitless chase for his signature, kept the focus off the players on the field and allowed Brendan Rodgers’ side to quietly prepare for the campaign ahead.

So far, it’s worked wonders. Three successive 1-0 wins have sent the Reds to the top of the table and with options right across the backline and further up the field, there’s every reason to invest in Rodgers’ side ahead of a kind run of upcoming fixtures.

The arrival of Mamadou Sakho will further strengthen a backline yet to concede and put Kolo Toure’s owners on edge. The Ivorian’s current groin injury hardly helps but with Rodgers labelling the £15m Frenchman “a marquee signing”, he looks odds-on to become a regular alongside Daniel Agger at the back, with the new Bonus Points System boosting the Reds’ defensive appeal.

Philippe Coutinho may have yet to pick up the attacking points after a strong pre-season but his owners will be intrigued by Rodgers’ comments yesterday. After signing Victor Moses on loan from Chelsea, the Reds boss suggested the Brazilian could occasionally be moved to the centre behind Daniel Sturridge, with Moses capable of filling in on the left.

Sturridge’s prolific start, which has seen his bag the winner in all three Gameweeks, is making him an irresistible Fantasy force right now as managers scramble to acquire his signature. At 9.1 to Suarez’ 10.9 in FPL, Sturridge is doing more than enough to suggest he’ll be the better value of the two and could easily outscore the Uruguayan upon his return in Gameweek 6 at Sunderland, given his more advanced role. Suarez, with an ownership of just 0.5%, however, looks a real differential in the making for that Black Cats’ showdown.

The Talking Point

The first international break of the season always brings with it huge temptation. A two-week break affords the time to reassess our initial line-ups and contemplate the deadwood in our 15-man squads – for many, the lure of that first wildcard proves irresistible.

This season, the introduction of the new Bonus Points System in FPL has also proved significant. Plenty have been persuaded to restructure their sides and opt for some premium-priced options at the back; after three rounds of matches, only two midfielders, six forwards and three keepers have scored more than 17 points, compared to 14 defenders.

The influx of new signings over the last few days has also proved alluring. Mesut Ozil’s arrival at Arsenal and Tottenham’s acquisition of Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela hands up top-class talents to consider for our midfields, while Samuel Eto’o’s switch to Chelsea and Romelu Lukaku’s loan move to Everton have altered the Fantasy landscape. Indeed, such is the multitude of in-form options up front, Robin Van Persie is losing owners despite a schedule which sees him welcome Palace, West Brom, Southampton and Stoke over the next six Gameweeks.

Since the weekend’s action, the frantic market activity has inflated several players’ prices. With Olivier Giroud also firing in the goals, the Arsenal man – along with Sturridge – has earned himself a substantial Fantasy bandwagon and could, conceivably rise the maximum 0.3 before the next round of matches. The likes of Yaya Toure, Hernandez, Jose Enrique, Pablo Zabaleta and Fraizer Campbell continue to acquire plenty new owners, while this afternoon’s addition of the new players is likely to spark further frenzy amongst the Fantasy fraternity, with the deadline still 11 days away.

For those going with migs with the WC are you getting a playing second keeper at 4.5 or just a cheap 4.0 bench fodder???

I've got Migs already, not WCing, but with a 4.5 playing keeper (Marshall). Don't like the idea of not having a back up and I know the .5 could be spent elsewhere but I'd rather play it safe

I'm not convinced about Yaya. Yes he scored a goal from a free kick but he's playing much deeper than last season. The next 6 ticker also places City bottom for attacking potential.

      No

If you didn't trade out Benteke/Ivan knowing that you can get him back with the wildcard and didn't use it since Saturday, missing out on some price rises I'd stick to this team now. I think Lambert was pretty unlucky so far, Mirallas can stay too, it isn't a bad squad at all.

Nope, Theo and Giroud are definitely in for me now and I'm not tripling on Arsenal attack. Ozil will mainly pick up assists and so I don't think he'll get too many bonus points. Not sure how many goals he'll score with Walcott and Giroud offering great runs for him to pick out.

You need to work harder at describing the problem. Don't ask for help and then make us do work to decipher the question.

        Is this your question:

Snod, Mirallas & Aguero > De Bruyne, Eriksen & Benteke

If so, is it a 4pt hit, an 8pt hit or a WC?
Either way, I'd probably say no. Find someone else for KDB's place.

      Marshall
      Mert - Coleman - Zaba
      Wally - Silva - Coutinho - Mirallas
      Soldado - Sturr - Dzeko

      Davis - Chester - Lucas - Baker; 1FT, 1,3M in bank

I would like Sturr - Giroud - Benteke in the long run.

      1) Who you think will do better in the next two gw, Giroud(sun, STK) or Soldado(NOR, car)?
      2) Would it be reasonable to do Benteke, Giroud -> Dzeko, Soldado now, because Dzeko's possible rotation and Benteke's good next fixtures?
      3) I am thinking about changing to 4-3-3 formation in the future, anyone supporting tactics like that?

What do you guys think of my wc team. Ive 3m in the bank my plan was to get Rooney before he got injured. I know I could upgrade brady for a player from one of the top 6 club but I rreckon he'll outscore a lot of them this year!

      Mig ( Boruc )
Coleman. Zab. Collins. ( Whittaker. Chester )
Silva. Walcott. Oscar. Brady. ( Barkley )
      Sturridge. Benteke. Giroud

Hmm 50/50...I can spot some players you need to get rid of but saying that you should still be able to put a decent starting XI out. I'd say save and maybe take a hit or two.

It would be nice to see his stats for the first, say, 10 games at each new club. Does he always hit the ground running or does it take time for him get up to that rate of scoring?

Kind of keen to get Benteke this week and transfer him to Sturridge next week. The problem is when he scores a brace and I'm gonna second guess my original plan.

Sturridge from the start it is. 😀

i agree with that although he did sign Kagawa and Zaha two plaers who i think weill be underused, but i do think whoever who is in charge of transfer left it too late. Khedria would have been a great signing but we were too slow. Credit to Moyes for keeping Rooney though but i am still worried about us long term

My analysis of the transfer window after getting annoyed by seeing United fans and other saying how bad United did, sees just people are praying for Moyes to fail without any reason.

I find it ammusing how people are saying United had a bad transfer window- it was unprofessional I admit but not much worse than others.(like having late papers for Cointreao)

United- needed cm and winger, got both, although the winger(Zaha) is not a guy who will really improve the team. Were denied targets like Fabre, Thiago, Herreira(though the former 2 game down to not being good value in uniteds opinion I cant see what is wrong with that)
Paid 5 mil extra for Fellaini, which was the price to pay for the time they got to see if they can get someone they maybe want more like Fabre. Grade 3(out of 5)

Chelsea- Needed a Striker - failed to get Rooney and looks like were not prepared to pay for Cavani.
Got a stopgap in Eto and a bunch of mids for not needed depth IMO. Grade 3+(as some of the players coming in are still exellent)

Arsenal- Needed a forward, defensive mid, CB and by the looks of the Di Maria chase a winger. And some fans would say they need a GK to( I dont agree). Failed to land Higuain, Ba, Di Maria, Benzema(though this probably was never serious), Suarez.
Got an excellent player in Ozil who will improve the team for sure but fails to adress the real needs. Grade 3+(I know I will get killed for this, but I dont think Ozil will get them over the 4th spot)

City- Lost Tevez, Barry and had an open spot from when Balo and Adam Johnson left.
Got, Navas, Negredo, Jovetic, Demichelis, Fernandinho,
Did the most proffessional business early and probably best prepped for the season, but looking at players lost and players gained I kind of think they have not improved at all as IMO(Negredo is worse than Balo and I dont know how Jovetic will compare with Tevez- though both are more better profs), Fernando and Navas are an upgrade over Barry and Adam Johnson- but by how much?
Grade from me 3+ and the + is for the way they handled things despite paying cash for Demichelis who was available for free earlier in the summer.

I am bias as a fan of Moyes, Fergie and UTD, but I think I looked at it quite objectively. Sorry for the long post.

we spent too much time going for players who would never leave and we didn't bale out of a failing transfer quick enough. I agree with siging Fellani but why didn't we do it earlier. Then we could have spent time finding someone else who can play as CM/CDM as back up or rotational player. If Fellani gets injured back to square 1

Agree and I think Moyes certainly showed the growing pains with haggling over a few mil for Herreira and not having better plans and timing. I think it is something that a manager can learn, and better not to spend than to panic buy and spend on players who wotn do much for you
