Scout Report – Mamadou Sakho

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers continued to strengthen his defence on Monday with the acquisition of Mamadou Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain. Having signed a long-term contract, the 23-year-old arrives for a reported £15m fee in what is a real statement of intent from the Merseyside outfit as they look to kick on from their 100% start to the season.

One of eight summer signings for the Reds, Sakho reckons that, despite the significant outlay for his services, he’ll have to battle to nail down a regular role:

“In a large club, having competition is something you expect. To get the best out of any player, you need to have competition. Competition doesn’t give me any worries. Competition makes the team grow and makes the club grow because that’s the objective and the goal of everyone here. I’ve been at Melwood for a day and it’s very good. The training areas are impressive and everything is in place for the players to keep in top condition. I’m delighted to be here. I’d like to thank everyone for the welcome. I came here because the project that is in place at Liverpool interests me. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

The History

A produce of the PSG youth academy, Sakho’s career at the Ligue 1 club kicked off back in 2007. Having made 12 appearances in his first season, the six foot two defender cemented a role as a first-team regular the following term and over the course of his six years in the French capital, played a total of 151 league games, scoring seven times and supplying a pair of assists.

Sakho – who can also fill in at left-back – was voted the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year in 2010/11 and was a crucial part of the side that won the French title under Carlo Ancelotti in the season gone by. He has also represented his country at youth level a total of 11 times and has turned out for the French senior side on 14 occasions.

The Prospects

Despite Kolo Toure’s impressive couple of opening displays and Martin Skrtel’s resilient showing against United last weekend, it seems almost inevitable that both will fall behind Sakho in the pecking order. The Ivorian’s current groin problem has already cast doubts over his ability to remain injury-free and it may well be that Rodgers sees him as experienced back-up option for Sakho or Agger over domestic cup matches, while Skrtel now looks fourth-choice, having been benched for Toure over the pre-season programme.

In a telling interview with the club’s official website, Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre revealed the characteristics that persuaded Rodgers to pursue the 23-year-old:

“Sakho is a top, top centre-half and that adds to the great centre-back pairings that we have already and it will give that depth. He’s an important marquee signing for us. One of the things that Brendan said was that he wanted to add real depth and strength and Sakho is a Champions League player of great pedigree and experience. I think it’s difficult to imagine anyone filling Jamie Carragher’s shoes, but what the arrival will do is bring huge strength and experience to the squad. I think importantly, when you see him on the pitch, you see that he’s a leader and he’s very strong. The manager wanted to bring leaders and people who could dig in when needed. I think when our fans get to see Sakho in action, they’ll see he’s definitely got all of those characteristics.”

Strong in the air and on the ground, with a superb distribution rate, Sakho seems the ideal fit for Rodgers’ possession-based tactics. The only downside is both he and Agger are predominantly left-footed, making them less of a natural partnership than Toure and the Dane – nevertheless, for £15m the Frenchman hasn’t come to warm the bench ahead of a World Cup year. There’s also perhaps the possibility of an occasional switch to a three-man backline – a tactic Rodgers trialled on one or two occasions last term, with a 3-4-3 system also tested during a few of his final matches in charge at Swansea.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.6 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team, Sakho looks bound to earn plenty owners before the domestic program resumes. With Agger, Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique all priced at 6.0 in FPL, the Frenchman is set to hand us a cheap route into the Reds’ back-four (albeit one that is still more costly than Toure’s 5.0), though Johnson’s current ankle complaint is one to monitor, with Andre Wisdom or Martin Kelly (both 4.4 in FPL) set to benefit if the right-back is ruled out for any length of time. The new Bonus Points System ruling also seems tailor-made for the likes of Sakho’s style of play, with his presence at the back likely to Liverpool’s chances of surpassing the 16 clean sheets harvested in Rodgers’ first season at the helm.

Ahead of an eye-catching run of fixtures (swa, SOT, sun, CPL, new, WBA ) investment in a defence that has already kept Christian Benteke and Robin Van Persie at bay in back-to-back matches looks a wise move, with many even tempted to double up, such has been the Reds’ resilience. With Rodgers’ side devoid of European duties this term, the focus is fully on nailing down a top four finish – a lack of rest and rotation could also benefit Liverpool’s main Fantasy assets and will likely bring Sakho onto the radar for wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers over the current international break.

Agree with that. Giroud still isn't getting the plaudits he deserves here. He was actually quality last season as well, took a season to settle in. Wenger has priors with French strikers as well.

Either Giroud or Sturridge are obvious choices. Negredo would be a good outsider if he gets more game time. Two goals from only 60 minutes of play so his conversion rate is good and will start getting noticed by Pellegrini. Benteke is also a very solid choice - nailed on and plays 90 minutes a game including spot kicks (besides spurs and man city) and also has a good run of fixtures. Soldado (been in my time from the get-go) doesnt look as if he can score from open play and the two goals to his name are from the spot. If you ask me, its between those three and fixtures are favoring arsenal and villa so Giroud and Benteke (goal and assist threat) seem to be solid choices.

Liverpool's system is going to be very interesting back to front. Rodgers surely has to plan for Suarez return with the system he rolls out from now on and clearly he's brought in Moses to shift Coutinho to the Number 10 role. Having said all this - three wins - no goals conceded. He surely won't be keen to change too much.

Yeah, and i think the system will vary alot, especially in away games. Reckon Henderson will still be picked over Moses away from home for his industry. He's had a strong start to the season, and a factor in Liverpool keeping 3 Cs's in 3 so far. Talk of Suarez as a wide forward, could also be 3-5-2 with him and Sturridge upfront. So many options

Why is Sakho getting so much hype when he was always on PSG's bench in the last year? I think it's more of a long term transfer. Toure has done well, so can't see Sakho playing every game. They can also do 3 at the back which would accommodate both

Anyone read Smurf's post on the last article? He really made a case for persuading me for using a 4-3-3 formation, anyone in favour of this?

It seems to be there isn't really a stand out budget midfielder for our fourth midfield spots, some if not a lot will disagree, but you can have three amazing mids without jeopardising your front three and get more value for money, plus 4 at the back seems to be paying off for many so far.

Yeah, I think there's something in it. Three heavyweights in midfield looks to be the way to go at the moment. I set up for five high/mid-price again based on last season but I'm definitely shifting to three with 2 low price options on rotation with one of my forwards.

I totally agree Mark, i'm certainly not used to playing a 4-3-3 but already this seems a really good way to push forward this season, i'll almost definitely be doing this also 🙂

ahhh yes, good old pogrebnyak hey, but you wouldn't have to sacrifice any of your front three really Christina, you can four amazing left backs, 3 beasts in midfield, and three forwards, providing one is below 9m, eg giroud, lambert 🙂

The sample size is 3GWs. Cleansheets are *apparently* abnormallyt high. However, basic game theory on an albeit small GW sample suggest 4-3-3 is the optimal format. However, you can't have 4 defs at home every GW. But the likes of Zab, Ivanovic or anyone else you shell out 6+m on should start every week for you, soo that point might be moot.

It depends what you're paying for your defenders. If you think that £4.5-5.0m defs are going to carry on getting regular 7ppg then you've got a shock coming because - as has been done to death here - the clean sheets are going to dry up a bit soon.

But with the new BAPS, I think there's a real case for going 4 at the back with big hitters - Chelsea, United, Liverpool, City - these guys are going to get 15-20 clean sheets over the season and for the centre backs, that looks like being 7-8 points each time. You won't get that kind of scoring out of £6m mids.

I do agree, but at teh back i'd be thinking about putting maybe agger, ivanovic, zabaleta and say maybe coleman or if i can stretch it, vidic, although some clean sheets will dry up defenders seem to have it their way this season, for good teams that is. Plus with the new BPS system falling in the case's favour, it makes for a persuading case in formation.
Your right definitely won't get that scoring out of 6m mids.

I think we agree here 🙂 I currently have Vidic, Toure and Coleman. I'm going to have to do something with Toure and it might be Luiz. Then rotate Collins and Chester for 4th spot.

Need to do a bit of midfield shuffling first though.

Yeah we certainly do. I also have toure, and could kick myself for taking out coleman the night before week 1, but hey ho. I will have to shift toure out, Luiz possibly yes.
            Collins and chester rotate well.

Yep, back to the drawing board, it's so tempting to use my WC! i think i might, i just can't resist, and i want Ozil.

I'm intrigued by the idea, especially if you bear in mind that clean sheets don't come exclusively from expensive defenders. Two heavy hitters (maybe Zaba and Vidic) plus maybe a Sakho or a Mertesacker and then two cheapies to rotate could be a good route. Or even three heavy hitters and a couple of 4.0s could still give you 4 decent shots at a clean sheet each week. I'm thinking Hull look handy for home cleanies.

Assisting midfielders, Hazard first gw and Walcott gw 2 and 3 as my captains didn´t get any BP altough both got assist. Walcott was on 4 BPS against Tottenham but for exemple Ramsey was on 6 BPS!

So midds like Silva, Mata, Özil wont be better buy than Yaya, Lampard and Cazorla?? Is this gonna change if we see more goals?

Does anyone here know the details being the Totalfpl article on bonus points? The analysis suggests that the values are statistically significant but I wonder if there ought to be some allowance for the fact that defenders and goalkeepers from the same side will usually all get a clean sheet or all not get a clean sheet. Does this not affect the conclusions a bit as it seems very far-fetched to conclude that centre-backs are worth 0.5 more points per game after only 30 games have been played.

    Something doesn't add up.

Thiago Silva apparently wanted to play next to his compatriot Alex, so that might have had something to do with it. Then they signed Marquinhos and Sakho wanted out. You're hardly going to keep a player who clearly wants out. I do think that Toure will keep his spot for a couple of weeks, providing he's fit, but will lose his spot eventually.
