Scout Report – Mamadou Sakho

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers continued to strengthen his defence on Monday with the acquisition of Mamadou Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain. Having signed a long-term contract, the 23-year-old arrives for a reported £15m fee in what is a real statement of intent from the Merseyside outfit as they look to kick on from their 100% start to the season.

One of eight summer signings for the Reds, Sakho reckons that, despite the significant outlay for his services, he’ll have to battle to nail down a regular role:

“In a large club, having competition is something you expect. To get the best out of any player, you need to have competition. Competition doesn’t give me any worries. Competition makes the team grow and makes the club grow because that’s the objective and the goal of everyone here. I’ve been at Melwood for a day and it’s very good. The training areas are impressive and everything is in place for the players to keep in top condition. I’m delighted to be here. I’d like to thank everyone for the welcome. I came here because the project that is in place at Liverpool interests me. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

The History

A produce of the PSG youth academy, Sakho’s career at the Ligue 1 club kicked off back in 2007. Having made 12 appearances in his first season, the six foot two defender cemented a role as a first-team regular the following term and over the course of his six years in the French capital, played a total of 151 league games, scoring seven times and supplying a pair of assists.

Sakho – who can also fill in at left-back – was voted the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year in 2010/11 and was a crucial part of the side that won the French title under Carlo Ancelotti in the season gone by. He has also represented his country at youth level a total of 11 times and has turned out for the French senior side on 14 occasions.

The Prospects

Despite Kolo Toure’s impressive couple of opening displays and Martin Skrtel’s resilient showing against United last weekend, it seems almost inevitable that both will fall behind Sakho in the pecking order. The Ivorian’s current groin problem has already cast doubts over his ability to remain injury-free and it may well be that Rodgers sees him as experienced back-up option for Sakho or Agger over domestic cup matches, while Skrtel now looks fourth-choice, having been benched for Toure over the pre-season programme.

In a telling interview with the club’s official website, Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre revealed the characteristics that persuaded Rodgers to pursue the 23-year-old:

“Sakho is a top, top centre-half and that adds to the great centre-back pairings that we have already and it will give that depth. He’s an important marquee signing for us. One of the things that Brendan said was that he wanted to add real depth and strength and Sakho is a Champions League player of great pedigree and experience. I think it’s difficult to imagine anyone filling Jamie Carragher’s shoes, but what the arrival will do is bring huge strength and experience to the squad. I think importantly, when you see him on the pitch, you see that he’s a leader and he’s very strong. The manager wanted to bring leaders and people who could dig in when needed. I think when our fans get to see Sakho in action, they’ll see he’s definitely got all of those characteristics.”

Strong in the air and on the ground, with a superb distribution rate, Sakho seems the ideal fit for Rodgers’ possession-based tactics. The only downside is both he and Agger are predominantly left-footed, making them less of a natural partnership than Toure and the Dane – nevertheless, for £15m the Frenchman hasn’t come to warm the bench ahead of a World Cup year. There’s also perhaps the possibility of an occasional switch to a three-man backline – a tactic Rodgers trialled on one or two occasions last term, with a 3-4-3 system also tested during a few of his final matches in charge at Swansea.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.6 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team, Sakho looks bound to earn plenty owners before the domestic program resumes. With Agger, Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique all priced at 6.0 in FPL, the Frenchman is set to hand us a cheap route into the Reds’ back-four (albeit one that is still more costly than Toure’s 5.0), though Johnson’s current ankle complaint is one to monitor, with Andre Wisdom or Martin Kelly (both 4.4 in FPL) set to benefit if the right-back is ruled out for any length of time. The new Bonus Points System ruling also seems tailor-made for the likes of Sakho’s style of play, with his presence at the back likely to Liverpool’s chances of surpassing the 16 clean sheets harvested in Rodgers’ first season at the helm.

Ahead of an eye-catching run of fixtures (swa, SOT, sun, CPL, new, WBA ) investment in a defence that has already kept Christian Benteke and Robin Van Persie at bay in back-to-back matches looks a wise move, with many even tempted to double up, such has been the Reds’ resilience. With Rodgers’ side devoid of European duties this term, the focus is fully on nailing down a top four finish – a lack of rest and rotation could also benefit Liverpool’s main Fantasy assets and will likely bring Sakho onto the radar for wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers over the current international break.

Good Lord, however did that happen. Probably best you don't tell me.

I would be well tempted to take an 8 pt hit here, rid yourself of both, and cut expensive elsewhere (Silva?) to help fund upgrades.

I'm off for a shower now, you've made me feel dirty. 🙂

Don't triple up. Go for the second one because:

        i) Ozil might not start vs. Sunderland (Arsene has done stupider things.)

ii) Walcott runs onto Ozil's masterful pass, scores or passes to Giroud for the tap in.

        iii) It's cheaper.

It's easy to HOPE that RVP keeps blanking, but the reality is that he won't.

Yes, the cheaper strikers are matching him or even surpassing him at the moment, but how long do you all think that will continue? All it takes is one wrong captain choice and an RVP hattrick and most of this site will be in tears.

Keep the FAITH in Robin Reliant.

Of course it won't, he'll score 20+ goals and be the top scoring FPL player again most likely. The (lucid) argument has never been that he would fail, it's that others would succeed and be a viable alternative. This debate will run all season because I think the pricing is good and has made teams with and without RVP similarly matched.

This sounds similar to what folks were saying last year at this time. The game feels very different this year however. We genuinely have several alternatives to RVP this year, all with terrific points potential, and all significantly cheaper than RVP. Setting up your stall on last year's strategy, when the writing is on the wall, will be the downfall of many teams this year. For me, this argument is only going one way, and its clear where the tears will be.

i even seem to recall having saurez over him for large chunks of last season & didnt miss him & managed to end up in the top 6k, with more choices this season i think it's even more feasible that you can go without him

I disagree. Yes, he'll produce, but so can Benteke, Sturridge, Giroud, Soldado, Suarez etc. United are also in a real period of transition. I can see there being some serious growing pains, a lack of service being the key factor. You could see it quite plainly against Chelsea and Liverpool. They don't know how to play together yet. Without a strong team behind him, RvP can't justify his 14.0 price tag which eats into midfield and defensive funds far too heavily. The big midfielders will start producing soon enough, you could also argue that they're lean spell won't last long either and when combined with strikers streaking into form, how can RvP match both?

I'm actually getting him this GW! Avoided him for the bad starting fixtures and wasn't too surprised he blanked in a couple.

Getting him because I found myself with no captain option in GW3, i flopped with Silva but my other options didn't produce either. Sturridge and Giroud are very constant ATM but can't see them scoring many hattricks this season.

Yes it was expected. I think the anti-RVP-hype is based on the fact that cheaper strikers has produced well, for instance Giroud, Sturridge and Soldado. I still think that RVP will outscore them in the long run.

This logic let me dump RVP on my WC last season. Got the likes of Giroud, Ba, and Jelavic up top, all firing, all around or under 9 mil. Season... ruined.

Ba and Jelavic are not comparable to Sturridge and Soldado. Sturridge and Soldado are proven goalscorers, and Ba was brilliant at Newcastle. Jelavic had a decent half season.

But to justify his price, he must do more than just outscore Soldado, Sturridge, Benteke & Giroud. He would have to outscore them by 100 points over the whole season. That is just not realistic, I believe.

Didn't even outscored Benteke by 100, and he only really scored that well from January onwards. Sturridge scored about 90 points in 14 games for Liverpool, or 220-230 points in a full season, only 30-40 less than RVP. Giroud was crap last year, that was a given. Soldado is a 20-25 a year striker and has been for a while now.

Massive assumption that Studge will carry that form on over a full season. RVP has done his thing for two full seasons in a row.

You need to double any gap you come up with anyway, because RVP's price takes captaincy into consideration. If -and it is a big if- he can maintain a 50 point gap (100 gap with captaincy) then that isn't a bad return for 5m extra. 20 points per million is a decent enough return.

He's currently doing exactly that, if not better. I think the captaincy is overstated as by having a multitude of options to choose your captain you are likely to have someone on form with a plum fixture who can practically match RVP.

I didn't say he wasn't doing it currently, I said it remains to be seen if he can do it for a full season. RVP has proven he can, twice over.

And actually, even scoring 3 winning goals in 3 games, Sturridge is still just shy of RVP's average points per 90mins played last season.

The difference will probably come in pens & RVP being good for ~15 assists a year whereas Sturridge has never intentionally passed the ball to a teammate in his life.

I didn't start with RVP but if 2 goals in 3 games is RVP not doing much then I'll take that.

I actually think he's looking like a better choice now than he was before the season started. With expensive mids being neutered by the new rules, finding the cash for RVP isn't really very difficult.

We're gonna see some of the 6.0+ defenders getting up to similar points as the 8-9m mids this year so it makes sense to take advantage of that. With money not being an issue, it makes sense to have the (almost certainly) highest scoring player in your team.

i don't think it's so much the mids not being helped by the scoring system, it's the magnitude of sub 14.0m striking options, and the dirthe of nailed on expensive midfielders.

almost none of the top 5 clubs have settled midfielders, gerrard, wally excluding, and they have better strikers for the same price or less.

otherwise this is spot on - picking the cheap mids is much more fun than last season's template i'd say.
