Scout Report – Mesut Özil

After months of fruitless searching for a marquee summer signing, Arsene Wenger finally got his man. In a sensational transfer deadline-day swoop, the Arsenal boss smashed the club’s transfer record and shelled out £42.5m on German international Mesut Özil from Real Madrid:

Having fallen out of favour under Carlo Ancelotti after the arrival of Isco and Gareth Bale, Özil revealed > that, ahead of World Cup 2014, a last-minute conversation with Wenger persuaded him to swap the sunnier climes of La Liga for north London:

“I was certain…that I would stay at Real Madrid. Then I realised that I didn’t have the confidence of the coach and the officials after all. I am a player who needs that confidence and I saw that I would have that at Arsenal and that is why I am going there. Wenger gives me the confidence that I can develop further and I want to be in top form for the World Cup next year. I spoke to him for a long time on the telephone and he told me his expectations and he trusts me, which I need as a player. I am a player who always wants to play a whole match, the full 90 minutes. I am looking forward to the new challenge.”

The History

A product of the Schalke youth academy, the five foot 11 Özil made his debut during the 2006/07 season. Over the course of a year-and-a-half, he produced five assists from 30 Bundesliga appearances before being picked up by Werder Bremen midway through the 2007/08 campaign.

After registering a single goal and assist over his first few months in his new surrounds, Özil began to show his potential. The following season harvested three goals and 15 assists in 28 league matches before he stepped up another level, with nine goals and 17 assists persuading Real Madrid to splash out €15m for his services in the summer of 2010.

Over the following three seasons, Özil lit up La Liga with a series of outstanding creative displays. In 105 league matches for the Spanish outfit, he registered an incredible 55 assists in addition to 19 goals – what’s more remarkable is that he was afforded the full 90 minutes in just 26 of those appearances. As the statistics show, he created 4.07 goalscoring opportunities per 90 minutes for team-mates in the 2012/13; putting that into perspective, Cristiano Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso managed 2.05 and 2.06 respectively. Indeed, with more assists to his name than any other player in Europe’s top divisions over the past five seasons, it’s little wonder even Jose Mourinho has acknowledged the 24-year-old is “the best number 10 in the world”.

On the international stage, Özil has been as equally impressive – 21 goals and 32 assists for the German national side highlight the fact he is no flat-track bully.

The Prospects

Set to be handed the role in “the hole” behind Olivier Giroud in Wenger’s default 4-2-3-1 formation, Özil has the ability to unlock even the meanest Premier League backline over the season ahead. The German’s eye for a killer pass or through-ball, allied with Santi Cazorla’s creativity on the Gunners’ left, will ensure both Giroud and Theo Walcott can be guaranteed a level of service which is likely to be second to none. Walcott’s runs from the right will benefit hugely from Özil’s defence-splitting passes, while Giroud must be licking his lips at the multitude of chances bound to come his way.

Özil, undoubtedly, will be the chief orchestrator at the Emirates – handed the role of dictating play by Wenger, his arrival was even fundamental to Mourinho’s decision to block Demba Ba’s loan move across London, with the Chelsea boss now viewing Wenger’s men as genuine title contenders. The knock-on effect on the Arsenal midfield means Tomas Rosicky now looks set for a bench role once again, while Jack Wilshere will be forced to battle it out with Aaron Ramsey for a place alongside Mikel Arteta in the double-pivot.

Coming in at 10.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Özil has already been subject to a substantial bandwagon since his introduction to the game yesterday – already, over 87,000 managers have splashed out the cash. With Walcott a little cheaper at 9.5 and Giroud priced at just 8.7 and rising, though, it seems more likely that those two will be the real beneficiaries from the new boy’s creative endeavours – indeed, with more points per goal for midfielders and clean sheet points to also consider, Walcott’s appeal is arguably the greater of any Arsenal FPL option right now.

Priced at 8.8 in the Sky Sports game and 5.5 in the Sun Dream Team; Özil is by no means cheap but his attributes make him a viable option across both games. Passing bonus points and Man of the Match awards can be expected in the former, while plenty of 7+ Star Man bonuses look on the cards in the Sun game – somewhat atoning for the fact that there are no awards for assists here.

As Arsenal prepare for a superb run of matches which sees them face only two of last term’s top six in the next 11 Gameweeks, the transfers in will surely continue to pick up pace. Home clashes against Stoke, Norwich, Southampton and Hull, allied with visits to Sunderland, Swansea, West Brom, Palace and Cardiff afford Özil the chance to hit the ground running and vindicate Wenger’s decision to finally unleash the cheque book and bring a real touch of class to the Emirates.

English League is the most competitive league in the world -- by far

        Spain- Barca + Real
        Germany- Bayern + Dortmund
        Italy- Juve + Milan
France- PSG, Lyon (Maybe Monaco this year)

England- ManU, Chelsea, City, Arsenal, Spurs.

        Cmon now.

On paper, yes - but in reality, if you look at the number of different teams that have won the title in the last say 10 years, Italy, Germany and France a LOT more 'competitive' than England, I think.

That was the Ferguson era. England still had many more "big teams" imo.

From this year on, I think things will be different.

Like I said, on paper I agree that EPL has a lot more 'bigger' teams but in terms of competitiveness, the other leagues (bar La Liga, of course) are more competitive as more teams actually win the title from year to year vs. just being 'good' teams.

Precisely, is it just having more 'big' teams or is it just having more teams actually win the title, all semantics.

the improvement has been city entering the mix & spurs improving, that's what's made it more competitive... the actual quality at the top has clearly gone down tho.

The overall quality from top to bottom is better than any other league in the world and has improved over the last 5 years. The reason EPL teams are struggling in Europe is simply that the top teams in Spain, Italy and Germany can rest players in the league and still win where as in the EPL the other teams are so strong this cant be done.

So just curious why so many RMTs have no backup goalies? I got clever last season and just went with Bego and boy did that blow up in my face when Stoke fell apart and Bunn seemed blessed with clean sheets.

Just seems too risky and removes some flexibility and wasting a transfer on a goalie blows.

The reasoning behind is to take the goalie from a top class team. ARS or LIV seems to be the two budget friendly options. (Mignolet has risen in price already though.) And just go with that.
I have Migs also but still think it is a good .5 investment to have a playing back up.

Part of the reason I went with 1 last season was because I thought it was good not to have a choice - like last week lots benched Migs which was a mistake. But the downside of having to transfer a keeper mid season is worse, IMO

After working my toosh off today and yesterday making my long posts that nobody reads due to their length I sure would appreciate an RMT for GW 4 and any transfer advice for the near future 😀

        Team (-12)

        Boruc, £4m

        Zaba, Clichy, Burner

        Walcott, Michu, Hernandez, Barfa

        Sturridge, Giroud, Soldado

Bench: Kim, Shaw, Collins (£2.8m ITB)

12 point hit was the following:

Aguero, Altidore, Snoddy, Mirallas to Sturridge, Giroud, Hernandez, Barfa

        Good plan?

Michu & Soldado out for Rooney & Lamela using 2FT in future.

Already took the hit but I want to save the WC hehe. Way I see it I made about £0.5m with those transfers, upgraded Snoddy to a better player in Pablo, got rid of deadwood (Altidore) for a striker in form (Giroud) took a risk that Sturridge is likely to score 4 more points against Swansea than Aguero against Stoke and finally Barfa should hopefully score 4 more points vs Villa than Mirallas vs Chelsea (M might be dropped for Delofeu anyway).

Your using alot of transfers chasing last weeks points, Aguero, Snoddy and Mirallas are good players, i certainly wouldnt take a minus 12, we have limited data so far and its been generally against the grain.

No, that is a bad plan.

              Boruc,
              Zab, Clichy, Collins
              Walctoo, Michu, Snodgrass, Miralles,
              Aguero, Soldado, Altidore

This is your current team. I don't think it is too bad. The only 2 I would be looking to lose in a hurry would be Altidore and Clichy. Clichy can wait a week.

This week I would advise Altidore out - Giroud (if you can afford him) in.

You're right, 12 pts is not enough to activate the WC, especially if you think the 12 pt hit nearly gives you a perfect team. You may want a defender or two from LIV/TOT/ARS in the near future?

            Hello guys 🙂

Anyone taking Hazard out? or sticking with him?

Was thinking Hazard and Dzeko to Lampard and Giroud for a -4 this week, barring any injuries of course!

Worried about my defence as well... Lescott and Toure, plus add Snodgrass to the mix im in a bit of a quandry!

Could do with using my wildcard, but i feel as though theres a solution to get me out of this mess in 2 weeks... so going to not use it!

Giroud, Giroud, Giroud, unequivocally Giroud. I have seen every single Arsenal game Giroud has played in, and he is one hell of a striker! His front post runs are brilliant, and I have never seen someone pick up the flight of the ball so early! He is centre to everything, and add Ozil and it's a no brainer. I have had Giroud from my very first draft, and he was the only one that never budged.

I personally want to go for giroud for price rise and also for the great 5-6 coming fixtures. I am tempted though by tekkers next 2 fixtures and especially gw 4 against Newcastle.

                aghhhhhhhh decisions desicions

              10, 7, 6, 10 for all your positions.

Would contemplate Michu - Hernandez, and upgrade Lamela, Ward-Prowse (to Brady) and 1x defence

Coleman. Cheapest and looks a great asset this season

                  Ben arfa. I hate Nolan

Silva. I think he will come good this season

Toss of a coin. Benteke ( I think)

Nolan vs Ben Arfa? Berfa- quality
Toure vs Silva vs No City Midfielder? I'd go for Silva
Benteke vs Sturridge? Benteke. Suarez is going to soil Sturridge party.

Coleman on price as all 3 will score similarly (well)
Could be the year Barfa breaks 100 but I dont trust him so Nolan (particularly at home)
No City mid, hopefully Negredo nails the front spot soon.
Sturridge just cos he's in a team that will win more often, both excellent.

My gut feeling is Luiz is most likely to play, but far from nailed on. All of the CBs will be rotated at various points but he's the best pick out of him , Terry and cahill.

It's hard to tell really who'll be nailed on for Chelsea at CB, Mourinho likes Terry and Cahill has done a decent job so far, he also has Ivanovic who can play at CB if he gives Azpilicueta a run in the team too. I couldn't be 100% sure that Luiz will be nailed on, but I think he will be

Time to cash in on Coleman and Zabs, Wildcarders.

They've run their course. Zab immensely lucky not to concede against Hull and that assist in week 1 was 100% fluke, coming from a Zab owner

Coleman's played Cardiff, Norwich and WBA, three of the worst offensive teams in the league. Cleanies will dry up too

Vidic Mert Luiz Agger all way better options

swapping Coleman for Mert is on my mind with the 0.3 I will currently have spare.

Need to do some research into Coleman's attacking stats.

Mert appeals even more with Ozil on corners

                  Found something that looks good,

                  Mignolet / mcgregor
                  Sakho / Collins / Zab / Coleman / Chester
                  Hernández / ward-browse / Lamela / Walcott / Lampard
                  Giroud / Benteke / Sturridge

Is lamps likely to start most?

Also I'm banking on lamela to be a differential in my mini leagues, just hoping his goals last season weren't too much to do with being under zeman, haven't checked when he scored.

No utd def, should I change that?

I took a -4 points hit and did the following: Huth-Mirallas-Dzeko to Ivanovic-Brady-Bentekers

                  Worth it?

                  My team:

                  Boruc

Bit of fun with my startin XI

International breaks are as bad as the migs in top gun. Its so boring, I may become a coleman or go for some exercise and blast those (z)abs, listen to enrique englasias or bounce my head off the wall (lcot). Some would recommend heading to the petting zoo to see a lam(ela) but cant find michu. Could play marko, polo or have some fun which would have yoda saying gi, roud he is. Could play ben @teke(n) but should (mu)stur ridge(d) points for the rest of the season.

Not much between them, I'd say, though it looks Mert gets more on the end of crosses directly though a lot of Koscielny's goals come off rebounds in the box, etc.

Vidic, Coleman, Collins, Murner, Chester (thinking about shipping Murner)

Very similar to mine, though I think I will go with Pablo instead of HBA and have one more premium defender ala Terry / Walker.

I am keeping Coleman, I think, though I am tempted by Arsenal defense due to fixtures.

Realistically how do you fix this mess?

All I can think of is WC

Team is fine it just has RVP in so screws everything else up.

                    Migs
                    Ivan Mert
                    Silva Walcott
                    RVP Bent

The base of the team is fine.
Injured players - Toure, Morrison & Baker
Rotation risks - Whittaker, Taarabt & Dzeko

I would look to swap 2 of your players probably Toure & Dzeko for a hit.

                    Could leave you with...

                    Migs
                    Ivan Mert BTurner
                    Silva Walcott DowningTaarabt
                    RVP Bent Giroud

High ownership does not justify price, performance does. What if he flops in the first three weeks and people sell him and he falls to 9.5, then he should have been 9.5?
